Chapter 387 of 493

Chapter 390

“Alright, I won’t nag since you don’t want to listen to all this. Sophia, to be honest, I don’t think you’re good enough for Charles, that’s why I want the two of you to break up,” Sylvia said sincerely.

Sophia frowned. Since when did she and Charles need anyone else’s opinion in order to be together?

Just as she was about to speak, Sylvia continued, “Sophia, I’m not asking for your opinion right now. If you promise to cooperate, I’ll have Charles released right away; if you don’t, well, business is business, it’s nothing personal.”

“Nothing personal? You’re an old retired actress, who are you to have such a say? “Business is business’? Tsk!” Sophia sneered.

She had no idea what Sylvia’s intention was, but one thing she was certain was that Sylvia did not go to such great lengths to separate her and Charles just for Charles’ sake!

Sylvia hated being called old. When she heard Sophia’s use of words, the smile on her face instantly vanished. “Don’t play word games with me, it’s pointless for you to weasel around with me. Sophia, I’ll give you half an hour to consider your options. It’s a yes or no question so it’s really quite simple!”

Sophia pursed her lips as her fingers dug deep into her palms.

As Sylvia said, there was no use for her to talk anymore. She only had two options now —— yes or no.

“However, before you give me your answer, let me remind you of two things.” Sylvia stood up and walked in front of Sophia.

She gently patted Sophia’s face and said, “First of all, the person provoking both Harris and Cox family is not someone they can afford to offend.

Although Master Russell might be able to have a say, he certainly won’t interfere if he’s smart enough.”

“Secondly, Harris Corporation is involved in human experiments. The evidence presented is not falsified, but we have yet confirmed whether Charles was in the know about it.”

The more she spoke, the paler Sophia got.

These were all facts.

With that, Sylvia straightened up and went back to the sofa where she pulled Jax up. “Alright, your half an hour starts now. I’ll make sure that nobody interrupts you so you can have a good think over it. Of course, if you want to leave, nobody will stop you either. Alright, I’ll see you later then.”

She laughed lightly as she linked her arms around Jax and left the room as the two of them giggled at each other.

A maid came forward with a fresh, warm pot of tea, a plate of fresh pastries, and a plate of sliced fruits. After placing them on the coffee table, the maid quickly left the room as well.

Sophia was left alone in the huge living room all of a sudden, or at least, that was what it seemed to her.

The brightly-lit room contrasted against the dark night outside. There was no hustle and bustle of the city, nor were there any sounds of insects chirping. It was eerily quiet, aside from the occasional brewing wind.

Sophia continued sitting in a tensed position for a long time. Finally, she stood up tentatively and walked to the door.

When nobody stopped her even when she reached the front door where light and darkness intersected, she stopped in her tracks.

What would happen to Charles if she just left like this?

Would Charles really be released if she agreed to Sylvia’s conditions?

Sophia stared at the jagged shadows of the trees in the distance as she felt the cold wind caress her cheeks. Her heart felt just as cold as the wind.

She licked her dry lips and called Yvette.

“What’s wrong, Soph?” Yvette took a while to answer the phone and there was exhaustion laced in her voice. “Why do I hear a strong wind blowing?

Are you outside right now?”

“I just finished dinner and I’m having a stroll outside around Bamboo Virtues Village. I saw an article on the internet that said taking a walk is good for pregnant women,” Sophia said.

“The house is so huge, you can just walk around at home. You should get back now, it’s really cold outside!” Yvette had watched Sophia grow up and she knew well that the child was sensitive to the cold.

Sophia’s head was beginning to hurt after standing in the cold even in such a short time.

However, Sophia did not go back into the house. “... I don’t want to go back into the house to be all alone. Aunty, I miss Charles. Do you know when will he able to come out?”

Yvette remained silent for a very long time.

“Aunty, you don’t know the answer either, right?” Sophia’s heart sank as she continued bitterly, “If Harris Corporation is proven to be involved with the illegal human experiments, what would happen to Charles?”

Yvette quickly steered the topic away. “Child, what are you thinking about? Have you forgotten the Harris and Cox family? Do you think we’ll sit around and watch Harris Corporation get ruined? Alright now, stop thinking about these things and go back into the house to rest. Just another... Just another few days, Charles will be out soon.”

“Alright, I understand. I won’t disturb you anymore, I’ll go sleep now. You’re right, it’s getting quite cold outside. Goodnight, Aunty.”

Sophia hung up and looked up at the moon in the sky.

The moon basked in a layer of sheer glow, seemingly unreal as it gleamed dimly in the dark night sky.

She put her phone away and smiled to herself wryly. Then, she returned to the living room.

The living room was still empty with nobody else in sight.

Sophia sat back down on the sofa and poured herself a cup of hot tea, then held it in her hands to warm herself up. “I have made my decision, you can come out now.”

As soon as she spoke, footsteps sounded from the spiral staircase, along with Sylvia’s laughter.

“I love working with people as straightforward as you!”

Although Sylvia’s voice betrayed her mature age, her makeup, and the way she dressed made her look considerably younger, so there was a bizarre contrast to how she looked.

Jax followed beside her with his arm around her waist. They were certainly not shy when it came to public displays of affection.

Sophia did not know how others felt but she felt sick just staring at the two of them.

“I wouldn’t dare to accept your appraisal. You have me caught between a wolf and a tiger, and you already set a snare right in front of me. I have no choice but to step into your trap because you forced me to, so it’s not exactly my decision to be forthright!”

She was merely forced into this decision because she had no other choice!

Sylvia and Jax sat down on the sofa across her as they cuddled together. “Your metaphor is quite interesting,” she chuckled.

“There you go, I promised to leave Charles. Can you let him go now?” Sophia was not in the mood to play any more games, and so she asked straightforwardly.

Sylvia leaned back and smiled. “That’s hard to say.”

Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!

Chapter 389 Can You Come Over Now “What do you mean?!” Sophia immediately jumped up.

Sylvia clearly offered that as long as she agreed to leave Charles, Charles would be released from prison, but now that she had agreed to Sylvia’s terms, Sylvia was going back on her words. What was going on?

“Oh, don’t be so anxious! Have a seat and we’ll talk about it.” Sylvia straightened up and knocked her finger gently on the coffee table.

Sophia remained standing as her face tensed up. “Are you toying with me?”

“Do you think I would waste my time and energy to do so many things just to toy with you?” Sylvia asked.

Sophia frowned. Sylvia did make a valid point, so what in the world was Sylvia up to?

“Come on, have a seat and I’ll tell you more about it. As long as you do everything I ask you to, I promise that Charles will be released safe and sound.” Sylvia’s tone was gentle and warm as if she was just chatting casually with a family member.

Sophia, on the other hand, was rigid and stiff as she sat on the sofa.

Things were clearly not as simple as Sylvia claimed to be!

Sylvia flashed Jax a signaling look and he headed back upstairs. Not long after, he returned with a USB flash drive and placed it in front of Sophia.

“There is information on two of Harris Corporation’s projects here, as well as evidence of Charles indirectly killing your mother. Do you want to look at it here or would you prefer to go through it at home?” Sylvia asked.
