âAlright, I wonât nag since you donât want to listen to all this. Sophia, to be honest, I donât think youâre good enough for Charles, thatâs why I want the two of you to break up,â Sylvia said sincerely.
Sophia frowned. Since when did she and Charles need anyone elseâs opinion in order to be together?
Just as she was about to speak, Sylvia continued, âSophia, Iâm not asking for your opinion right now. If you promise to cooperate, Iâll have Charles released right away; if you donât, well, business is business, itâs nothing personal.â
âNothing personal? Youâre an old retired actress, who are you to have such a say? âBusiness is businessâ? Tsk!â Sophia sneered.
She had no idea what Sylviaâs intention was, but one thing she was certain was that Sylvia did not go to such great lengths to separate her and Charles just for Charlesâ sake!
Sylvia hated being called old. When she heard Sophiaâs use of words, the smile on her face instantly vanished. âDonât play word games with me, itâs pointless for you to weasel around with me. Sophia, Iâll give you half an hour to consider your options. Itâs a yes or no question so itâs really quite simple!â
Sophia pursed her lips as her fingers dug deep into her palms.
As Sylvia said, there was no use for her to talk anymore. She only had two options now ââ yes or no.
âHowever, before you give me your answer, let me remind you of two things.â Sylvia stood up and walked in front of Sophia.
She gently patted Sophiaâs face and said, âFirst of all, the person provoking both Harris and Cox family is not someone they can afford to offend.
Although Master Russell might be able to have a say, he certainly wonât interfere if heâs smart enough.â
âSecondly, Harris Corporation is involved in human experiments. The evidence presented is not falsified, but we have yet confirmed whether Charles was in the know about it.â
The more she spoke, the paler Sophia got.
These were all facts.
With that, Sylvia straightened up and went back to the sofa where she pulled Jax up. âAlright, your half an hour starts now. Iâll make sure that nobody interrupts you so you can have a good think over it. Of course, if you want to leave, nobody will stop you either. Alright, Iâll see you later then.â
She laughed lightly as she linked her arms around Jax and left the room as the two of them giggled at each other.
A maid came forward with a fresh, warm pot of tea, a plate of fresh pastries, and a plate of sliced fruits. After placing them on the coffee table, the maid quickly left the room as well.
Sophia was left alone in the huge living room all of a sudden, or at least, that was what it seemed to her.
The brightly-lit room contrasted against the dark night outside. There was no hustle and bustle of the city, nor were there any sounds of insects chirping. It was eerily quiet, aside from the occasional brewing wind.
Sophia continued sitting in a tensed position for a long time. Finally, she stood up tentatively and walked to the door.
When nobody stopped her even when she reached the front door where light and darkness intersected, she stopped in her tracks.
What would happen to Charles if she just left like this?
Would Charles really be released if she agreed to Sylviaâs conditions?
Sophia stared at the jagged shadows of the trees in the distance as she felt the cold wind caress her cheeks. Her heart felt just as cold as the wind.
She licked her dry lips and called Yvette.
âWhatâs wrong, Soph?â Yvette took a while to answer the phone and there was exhaustion laced in her voice. âWhy do I hear a strong wind blowing?
Are you outside right now?â
âI just finished dinner and Iâm having a stroll outside around Bamboo Virtues Village. I saw an article on the internet that said taking a walk is good for pregnant women,â Sophia said.
âThe house is so huge, you can just walk around at home. You should get back now, itâs really cold outside!â Yvette had watched Sophia grow up and she knew well that the child was sensitive to the cold.
Sophiaâs head was beginning to hurt after standing in the cold even in such a short time.
However, Sophia did not go back into the house. â... I donât want to go back into the house to be all alone. Aunty, I miss Charles. Do you know when will he able to come out?â
Yvette remained silent for a very long time.
âAunty, you donât know the answer either, right?â Sophiaâs heart sank as she continued bitterly, âIf Harris Corporation is proven to be involved with the illegal human experiments, what would happen to Charles?â
Yvette quickly steered the topic away. âChild, what are you thinking about? Have you forgotten the Harris and Cox family? Do you think weâll sit around and watch Harris Corporation get ruined? Alright now, stop thinking about these things and go back into the house to rest. Just another... Just another few days, Charles will be out soon.â
âAlright, I understand. I wonât disturb you anymore, Iâll go sleep now. Youâre right, itâs getting quite cold outside. Goodnight, Aunty.â
Sophia hung up and looked up at the moon in the sky.
The moon basked in a layer of sheer glow, seemingly unreal as it gleamed dimly in the dark night sky.
She put her phone away and smiled to herself wryly. Then, she returned to the living room.
The living room was still empty with nobody else in sight.
Sophia sat back down on the sofa and poured herself a cup of hot tea, then held it in her hands to warm herself up. âI have made my decision, you can come out now.â
As soon as she spoke, footsteps sounded from the spiral staircase, along with Sylviaâs laughter.
âI love working with people as straightforward as you!â
Although Sylviaâs voice betrayed her mature age, her makeup, and the way she dressed made her look considerably younger, so there was a bizarre contrast to how she looked.
Jax followed beside her with his arm around her waist. They were certainly not shy when it came to public displays of affection.
Sophia did not know how others felt but she felt sick just staring at the two of them.
âI wouldnât dare to accept your appraisal. You have me caught between a wolf and a tiger, and you already set a snare right in front of me. I have no choice but to step into your trap because you forced me to, so itâs not exactly my decision to be forthright!â
She was merely forced into this decision because she had no other choice!
Sylvia and Jax sat down on the sofa across her as they cuddled together. âYour metaphor is quite interesting,â she chuckled.
âThere you go, I promised to leave Charles. Can you let him go now?â Sophia was not in the mood to play any more games, and so she asked straightforwardly.
Sylvia leaned back and smiled. âThatâs hard to say.â
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 389 Can You Come Over Now âWhat do you mean?!â Sophia immediately jumped up.
Sylvia clearly offered that as long as she agreed to leave Charles, Charles would be released from prison, but now that she had agreed to Sylviaâs terms, Sylvia was going back on her words. What was going on?
âOh, donât be so anxious! Have a seat and weâll talk about it.â Sylvia straightened up and knocked her finger gently on the coffee table.
Sophia remained standing as her face tensed up. âAre you toying with me?â
âDo you think I would waste my time and energy to do so many things just to toy with you?â Sylvia asked.
Sophia frowned. Sylvia did make a valid point, so what in the world was Sylvia up to?
âCome on, have a seat and Iâll tell you more about it. As long as you do everything I ask you to, I promise that Charles will be released safe and sound.â Sylviaâs tone was gentle and warm as if she was just chatting casually with a family member.
Sophia, on the other hand, was rigid and stiff as she sat on the sofa.
Things were clearly not as simple as Sylvia claimed to be!
Sylvia flashed Jax a signaling look and he headed back upstairs. Not long after, he returned with a USB flash drive and placed it in front of Sophia.
âThere is information on two of Harris Corporationâs projects here, as well as evidence of Charles indirectly killing your mother. Do you want to look at it here or would you prefer to go through it at home?â Sylvia asked.
