Chapter 380 of 493

Chapter 383

Screech——

The convertible’s tires squealed as it skidded against the road surface.

Sophia felt someone dart past her, followed by a loud bang. The convertible crashed into someone and that person was hurled through the air before hitting the ground about one or two meters away.

James had pushed Sterling aside in the nick of time and was now lying unconscious in a pool of blood.

-

At the hospital.

Nearly six hours had passed, yet the doors to the emergency room were still closed.

The four of them waited quietly outside the emergency room, some were sitting in chairs while some slumped on the floor.

“You should go back and rest, you must be worn out.” Charles held Sophia’s ice-cold hands in his as he rubbed against them tirelessly, attempting to help warm her up.

Sophia shook her head. “You know how selfish he is, but he still...”

She had never expected her father to put his life on the line to save someone. She usually thought that him not forcing people to massage his back for him was already a miracle in itself.

However, she had a strange feeling that she may never hear those words again.

Creak!

The doors to the emergency room finally opened.

Sterling instantly jumped up and rushed over. “Doctor, how is my father?”

“I’m so sorry but we tried our best,” the doctor replied, “The next three days are crucial. If he gets through it, the best scenario is that he’ll remain in a vegetative state. If he doesn’t... it might be time to start preparing for his funeral.”

With that, the doctor signaled the nurses and doctors in the room to have them wheel James out.

Now that the doctor had debriefed his patient’s relatives, he was ready to leave.

“Doctor, please don’t be like this!” Sterling stopped him right away. “I can give you money! However much you want, just name me a price! I’m Sterling White, the young master of White Industries, have you heard of me? As long as you save my father, I’ll give you anything you want!”

“I’m sorry but we already tried our best. Mr. White needs his rest now so I suggest you quiet down.” The doctor gently pushed Sterling aside as he let out a heavy sigh, then he turned to leave.

The nurses and doctors pushed the gurney into the elevator.

“I’m sorry, I...” Nicole had a ghastly expression on her face as she walked to Sterling, wanting to comfort him.

However, as soon as her hand touched him, he shoved her aside. She staggered backward from the unexpected force, but fortunately, Sophia reacted quickly enough to grab her so she did not fall to the ground.

“F*ck off!” Sterling snarled before he turned around and strode toward the elevator.

Sophia let go of Nicole and said coolly, “Nicole, I don’t care if this was your intention or if someone’s asked you to do it, it doesn’t matter anymore.

Just go and never come back.”

Nicole licked her dry, brittle lips and stared back at her. She opened her mouth slightly as if she wanted to say something.

In the end, she decided not to. There was a complex look in her eyes as she looked at the direction where Sterling set off for a very long time. Then, she finally left.

Sophia stared at her leaving figure and opened her mouth wide as she tried to gasp for air like a fish in a dried-up pond.

“At the end of the day, we can only manage ourselves and hold ourselves accountable. There’s no need to punish yourself for someone else’s mistake.” Charles hugged her tightly in her arms and planted a kiss on her forehead. The sight of Sophia being hurt distressed him.

He was not afraid of anything in this world, but the only thing he could not bear was seeing Sophia sad.

The two of them headed off to the ICU to check on James, who was still unconscious with his eyes closed. There was no sign of him waking up anytime soon.

It had only been half a day but Sterling looked so distraught and worn out that even his stubble was almost visible. He stood beside the bed staring at his father, but his eyes were empty and distant. Just the sight of him was heart-wrenching enough.

“You should go, you still have a lot of things to settle at the office. I want to stay at the hospital for a little while longer.”

When Charles took over the 25% shares, he stumbled upon what seemed to be a private account book. At first glance, it looked as if Master Harris had been embezzling the corporation’s money to fund several small companies, but he had not looked into the matter yet.

Moreover, the company’s accounts did not tally up and it was about time for the meeting with their shareholders to discuss the company’s financial situation, so this was quite an unsettling situation.

Sophia was aware of this problem so she did not want to waste any more of his time.

However, Charles was reluctant to leave her alone here. He gave her careful instructions and talked to the bodyguards for a while before finally leaving.

-

Two days passed by and James was still in a coma.

Charles, on the other hand, was facing more troubling issues.

Madam Jones had approached Mr. Harris to help plead for Leah’s case, and that was how Yvette found out about their affair. With the recent ongoings between the Jones and Harris family, the Jones family was keen on using this incident as an excuse to force the Harris family to lend a hand to Jones Group.

“You’re pregnant now, you shouldn’t be tiring yourself out or your body won’t be able to withstand the exhaustion. Go back and rest, I’ll be fine alone here.” It had only been two days but Sterling was completely disheveled. He no longer looked like the wealthy young master he once was.

Sophia had stayed here for the past two days as well. Although Sterling would lay down in the extra bed at night, his eyes never closed even for a second. Hence, his eyes were thoroughly bloodshot now.

“Ster, if you go on like this, you won’t be able to make it until Dad wakes up. Please listen to me and go take a nap. Even if you can’t sleep, just close your eyes and rest,” Sophia said.

Sterling shook his head, and his voice was hoarse when he replied, “I’m fine.”

No matter how Sophia urged him, he would not budge. Left with no other choice, she gave one of the bodyguards a signaling look and had him knock Sterling unconscious. Then, he laid Sterling in the extra bed.

Now that Mom was gone and Dad was in critical condition, she could not let anything bad happen to her brother anymore.

“Ms. White, someone by the name of Maisie Leadman is here to visit Mr. White,” a bodyguard standing by the door came in and told Sophia.

Sophia nodded before leaving the room.

Maisie had a bag of fruits in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other. However, she still had the usual stern expression on her face.

“You should take better care of yourself now that you’re pregnant, it’s your basic responsibility toward your baby.” She passed the fruits and flowers to one of the bodyguards standing beside them.

Sophia nodded. “Thank you, Ms. Leadman. Dad is right inside but he’s still unconscious, would you like to see him?”

“An evil man like him will surely live for another thousand years, I don’t need to see him to know that he’ll get through this. I’ll take care of everything at the company for now but please have Sterling come back as soon as possible. That’s all, I’m leaving now.” Maisie merely cast a brief glance at the hospital room before turning to leave.

“Ms. Leadman,” Sophia called out from behind.

“Yes, is there anything else?”

“The company is in your hands now, thank you very much.”

“It’s my job, it’s only my duty to keep the company running, you don’t have to be so polite,” Maisie said as she got on the elevator and left.

Sophia had the bodyguard put aside the flowers and the fruits in the room.

Just as she was about to go back into the room, her phone suddenly rang. It was an unknown number.

“Hello, may I know if you’re a relative of Mrs. Nicole White?” A woman’s voice sounded from the other end of the call.

Sophia immediately frowned. “Yes, what’s the matter?”

“She lost an arm and was sent to the hospital by a passerby. By the time she got here, she had already lost a lot of blood. We found your contact number when we went through her phone. Is it possible for you to come over now?”

She lost... an arm?

Had her sister-in-law taken a chapter out of Leah’s books and learned how to set up traps by self-harming or did she really get into an accident?

Either way, Sophia came to realize that she could not just ignore her.

She licked her lips and replied in a troubled tone, “I’m at the hospital right now, may I know which ward is she in?”

Sophia tucked her phone away as she went to get Sterling, but it was not until she got back into the room before she remembered that her brother was now unconscious.

“Ms. White, Mr. White received a few calls from an unknown number earlier.” The bodyguard passed Sophia Sterling’s phone.

Sophia looked at the number and recognized it as the number that had called her. She mumbled a vague response and set off to ward 1236, but the moment she walked out of the door, she turned back.
