Chapter 356

“Thank you, Doctor.” Nicole thanked the doctor and escorted him out of the room.

Meanwhile, Sterling stayed by the bed and stared at Sophia. Then, he turned to Nicole and said, “Honey, I don’t think that doctor is very reliable.

Maybe we should get another one to come by!”

“No need for that. Every doctor in this hospital is reputable enough, he wouldn’t just talk nonsense,” Nicole said.

Sterling stood up abruptly and scratched his head in annoyance. “Sophia is still unconscious, don’t you think...”

“Soph is just exhausted,” Nicole said slowly, interrupting him. “Everyone is already criticizing the White family, so don’t you lose your temper and start another fight with Mr. and Ms. Jones now. It won’t do us any good.”

Sterling muttered a string of curses under his breath. With an unhappy look on his face, he still nodded begrudgingly.

“Alright, Soph needs some peace and quiet to rest properly, and so does Dad. You should get him back to his room first.” Nicole suggested.

Sterling cast James a look and frowned. “His room is just a few steps away, I’m sure he’ll be fine going back alone! I want to stay here and keep an eye on Soph!”

Before Nicole could say anything, James spoke first, “It’s not necessary, you two should just stay here. I want to be alone for a while.”

With that, he gave Sophia a long, meaningful look before walking out the door.

Nicole stood by the door and watched him enter his own room. Then, she finally withdrew her gaze and went back into the room. She closed the door behind her.

Her father-in-law was seriously ill, yet both his children were unwilling to stay by his side to take care of him. Though she pitied him... The hatred his children held toward him was completely understandable. At the same time, there was nothing she could comment about their behavior either.

“Soph, now isn’t the right time to do it, but maybe we can wait for this to blow over and I’ll hire a few people to beat up those two shameless siblings!”

Sterling said as he dropped his head in despair.

He felt completely useless. His sister had been wronged once again and there was nothing he could do about it...

Nicole ignored him completely as she went to Sophia’s bedside. She said gently into her ear, “Soph, Dad is back in his room now.”

“What’s the point of telling Soph...” Sterling stopped mid-sentence when he saw Sophia open her eyes. He exclaimed happily, “Soph, you’re awake!”

He grabbed her by her shoulders and sized her up from top to bottom. “How are you feeling? Does anything feel wrong?”

“I’m fine, sorry for worrying you.” Sophia supported her weight with her hands on the bed and sat up straight.

Anger spread across Sterling’s handsome face. “You were so aggravated by those two shameless idiots that you fainted! How is that nothing? Just be patient and wait for a while, I’ll...”

“Ster, I’m really fine. I just pretended to faint, that’s all.”

“How is that nothing? You pretended to faint...” Sterling suddenly paused as he slowly processed it in his mind. “What did you just say? You pretended to faint?” He raised his voice as he finally came to a realization.

Nicole smacked his head lightly and said in a displeased tone, “Can you not be so loud? Do you want to announce this to the world and let everyone know about it?” Sterling rubbed his head. He finally felt rest assured but also confused. “Soph, why did you pretend to faint? I was almost scared to death!”

“No reason, I just couldn’t be bothered to put up an act with Leah,” Sophia simply replied.

Even though William had been tricked by Leah multiple times in the past, he still felt somewhat entitled to this sister of his because of how much he loved her. Leah’s suicide attempt this time must have shaken his doubts toward her.

Leah alone was hard enough to deal with in the first place, but now that William had inserted himself in the situation to defend his sister, Leah would be as powerful as a tiger with wings.

Sophia could not just sit around and watch this happen.

One of the reasons she feigned losing consciousness was to make William feel even more guilty, which might eventually affect the relationship between these two siblings.

That way, not only did Leah have to face her and Charles, but her own brother as well. This might increase the chances of her making a mistake sooner or later.

However, there were too many twists and turns in this story. She was too lazy to explain it out. Even if she did, her brother might not understand right off the bat either.

Her sister-in-law, on the other hand, seemed to have made the connections herself.

“I can understand why you did it! It’s a pity Leah isn’t in the entertainment industry. The celebrities nowadays that the media industry is always boasting about have nothing on Leah’s acting skills!”

“Soph, can’t you think of other ways to get away from putting on an act with her? If this happens a few more times, I don’t think my heart can take it!”

Sterling said.

Nicole let out a gentle sigh. He really believed her words.

Sophia smiled and replied, “I won’t...”

Before she could finish her sentence, someone barged in through the door. They were greeted by a huffing and puffing Charles who had run all the way here.

It was December now, yet he was just wearing a shirt and a pair of tailored pants. He had seemingly forgotten his suit and coat.

Sweat beaded his forehead, and his breaths were still visible as he panted heavily. He did not even stop to wipe away his sweat before striding toward the bed.

Seeing that Sophia was safe and sound, the frantic look in his eyes finally faded, but there was still a dark cloud cast over his face.

“Charles, what are you doing here?” Sophia looked up at him. His hands were all red, probably frozen from the cold.

Charles said nothing as he suddenly bent down and pulled her into his arms.

Now that he was finally touching and feeling her in person, his heart that had been hanging by his throat finally dropped back to his chest.

He hugged her so tightly that she could barely breathe. She tried to struggle out of his grasp, but after hesitating for a bit, she hugged him back and patted him gently on the back.

Charles planted a kiss by her ear, his voice filled with undisguisable worry as he asked, “Have you gotten your body checked? Do you feel alright?”

Sterling’s eyes widened when he saw his sister being enveloped in the arms of a big man. He felt as if his eyes were about to pop out of their sockets. His fists itched.

However, he noticed his wife glaring at him, so he swallowed down the words that came to his lips.

“Dad is alone in his room now and hasn’t been in a good mood recently, we should go see him.” With that, Nicole forced her husband out of the room.

Sophia continued patting Charles on the back, trying to soothe his emotions. “I’m fine.”

Chapter 355 Sophia? Sophia?

As she told him the entire story from the beginning to the end, she felt his stiff body slowly loosen up.

“I’m almost out of breath, can you let me go now?” she asked meekly.

Charles loosened his arms around her but showed no sign of letting go. Then, he carried her up as he plopped himself down on the bed. He settled her on his lap.

Although the two of them had had sex several times, this strangely felt much more intimate.

Sophia felt extremely uncomfortable and tried to get up, but as soon as she tried to lift herself up, he would press her back down.

“Don’t move, just stay in my arms for a bit,” Charles said as he gently tapped her hip.

The average couple might think that a simple action like tapping one’s nose or butt, or perhaps kissing, were just ordinary things.

However, these two were not like a normal couple. Sophia’s face heated up uncontrollably, and she almost jumped up.

“Is William pestering you again?” Charles rested his head on her shoulder and asked in a cool tone.
