Chapter 314

Charles stared straight at her, his eyes solemn and dark while she returned the same expression.

After a long moment of silence, he retracted his gaze and started the car. “It doesn’t matter what you think, I know you’ll stay by my side forever.”

Sophia did not add on to this. Instead, she looked out the window at the cars passing by. “I coerced Leah and I don’t think she’s very happy about it.

She also thinks that I’m not pregnant, so your grandfather will probably drop by and see us in a few days.”

“... Did you set her up?” Charles turned to her with a weird look on his face.

His reaction made Sophia frown. “She has schemed against me so many times now in the past, but I’m not allowed to do the same?”

“No, of course.” It was just unexpected.

The edges of Charles’ lips curled up as he reached out a hand to touch her head adoringly. “Good job.”

Sophia’s first instinct was to dodge away, but as soon as his hand touched her head, she pursed her lips and did not move.

Right then, they were interrupted by the sound of a buzzing phone.

“It’s in my right pocket,” Charles turned and said to Sophia.

Sophia nodded vaguely and reached for it. Almost at the same time, the car on the opposite side suddenly swerved over, so Charles abruptly turned the steering wheel. Sophia swayed against the car and her hand accidentally came into contact with something she should not be touching.

Just like magic, it hardened in mere seconds.

Sophia’s body stiffened as well, and she felt as if her hand was burning. She slowly turned to look at Charles who seemed extremely normal and completely unaffected.

“Be good, you can touch more of it when we get back if you haven’t had enough,” Charles turned around and said to her.

Sophia, “...”

The two of them had been together for quite some time now, but he was not like the other boyfriends who threw around words like “be good’, “baby’, and “babe’. Now that such a word came out of his mouth, she did not have goosebumps as she had expected to. This was to her surprise. Instead, there was a strange feeling in her.

It felt... Sweet?

Meanwhile, the phone was still buzzing.

Sophia bit her lip and reached over to grab his phone. When she saw the caller ID, she immediately grimaced. “It’s your grandfather.”

This was sooner than she had expected.

Charles nodded. She then picked up the call and placed the phone by his ear.

“Where are you now? You better get home right now!” Master Harris roared loudly. Even without switching on the loudspeaker, Sophia could already hear his outburst.

“The earliest I can get home is tomorrow though, do you have the patience to wait for me, Grandpa?” Charles replied calmly.

“Don’t try to be smart with me! I want to see both you and Sophia in less than half an hour!” Master Harris yelled angrily into the phone and hung up straight after.

Sophia put the phone away carefully into her purse.

“Have you ever considered the consequences of lying to Grandpa?” Charles asked.

Sophia rubbed her lower abdomen gently and replied with a vague look in her eyes, “We’re not lying to him anymore now.”

“Do you think the baby in your stomach right now can protect you? If someone else in the Harris family gets pregnant, your baby will mean nothing to Grandpa,” Charles said, “It’s good that you learned how to fight back, but the fact that you have put yourself at risk in your plot against Leah just means that you haven’t learned how to fight her properly.”

He usually referred to the baby as theirs, but now, him calling it “the baby’ just showed how upset he was with Sophia.

“I already had a private investigator look into all the Harris family’s granddaughters-in-law as well as their secret lovers. Nobody is pregnant,” Sophia said.

She was basically implying that the baby in her stomach was Master Harris’ only chance of having a great-grandchild.

“A private investigator?” Charles seemed quite shocked.

“Collin,” Sophia replied curtly.

Collin was the private investigator Charles had hired previously to investigate the car accident two years ago.

It was not surprising that Collins could look into this. Charles’ eyes sparkled, and he turned to look outside the window.

It seemed that the scenery outside today was particularly beautiful.

After half an hour or so, the Bentley came to a stop outside the Harris Manor.

The butler and maids who had been waiting outside the door for a long time immediately came forward and opened the doors for Charles and Sophia.

Charles handed his car keys to one of the maids and walked toward the door with Sophia while the butler followed beside her.

The butler cast a fearful glance at Sophia, then Charles. He heaved a heavy sigh. “Charles, your grandfather has lost his temper. Please just let him be and yield whenever possible. Don’t be stubborn and fight with me. After all, you’ll be the one to suffer in the end.”

“Got it, Uncle Swift,” Charles said as he flashed the butler a smile.

Sophia stayed by Charles’ side. Although she was not as nervous as the first two times, the thought of seeing Master Harris soon made her tense.

Master Harris disliked people who opposed him and did not appreciate arguing with people about rights and wrongs. Most of all, he hated people who deceived him. He wanted people to surrender to him. He wanted absolute control over everyone.

Sophia’s lips were dry. She pinched herself hard on her elbow. Her eyes instantly turned red.

She made a mental note to prepare a bottle of eye drops to keep by her side at all times from now on. That way, they would serve its purpose just nice if she needed to cry. It was much more convenient than pinching herself.

Noticing the small gesture, pain flashed across Charles’ eyes. Though, he stayed silent.

Master Harris was waiting for them in the hall. As soon as the two of them entered the room, a glass came flying toward them. Sophia dodged aside, and the glass flew past her cheek before falling to the ground. It broke into several pieces.

Sophia’s face was stained with a few drops of water. A few strands of her hair stuck to her dampened face. She dared not move even though it felt extremely uncomfortable.

“How dare you try to dodge?!” Master Harris wore a light grey suit, and he seemed thinner than the last time she saw him. The wrinkles on his face appeared deeper as well.

Sophia kept her head low. Cold sweat formed around the tip of her nose, and her hands could not stop shaking. However, she still kept quiet.

Aunt Jacinda, who was standing beside him, said to him anxiously, “Master Harris, don’t be angry. It’s not good for your health.”

Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!

Chapter 313 It’s Because I Threatened Her “How can I not be angry after they did all those things?” Master Harris’ yelling was followed by a violent cough. His face turned paler as well.

Once he stopped coughing, he swiftly scrunched up his handkerchief in his fist and looked up at Charles. When he saw that Charles did not eye the handkerchief in his hand, his fists loosened up slightly.

Aunt Jacinda patted him gently on the back. “I’m sure they have their own difficulties and reasons.”

“Difficulties?” Master Harris snorted and looked at Sophia and Charles. “What kind of difficulties do they have? They just think that they can ally themselves with a bunch of outsiders to deceive me because I’m an old man who’s about to die! They even went as far as to bribe Madam Davis!”

Sophia bit her lip so hard that tears rolled down her cheek. Still, she said nothing.

Charles knew that she was only putting on a show, but when he saw the tears on her face, his heart still throbbed involuntarily.

Sterling was right. He could not even protect the woman he loved.
