Leah stared at her fixedly and tightened her grip around her wheelchairâs armrest as she sighed. âWhy do you have to deliberately imitate the way I speak and my style of doing things just to disgust me?â
âOh?â Sophia exclaimed in shock, âSo you also agree that your words and actions are disgusting?â
Leah pursed her lips and stared at her indifferently. She lifted herself up from the wheelchair for a moment but sat back down again, her entire body all tensed up.
Sophia was like a changed woman!
âThank you for being so thoughtful. The cabbage and enoki mushrooms sure taste better after dipping them in the soup.â Sophia curled her lips and smiled at her.
Leah remained silent as she stared at Sophia. Then, as if pretending that she had not seen the smile, she proceeded to order everything that she could think of. She appeared to have a good appetite all of a sudden.
âYou didnât ask me out today just to fight with me, did you?â Although the gamey smell of the pigâs lungs gave Leah the urge to puke, she had no choice but to endure it.
People nowadays were too nosy. If she did throw up in front of Sophia, some girls or any busybody who saw it would certainly snap a photo and post it online.
If she made another mistake that cost her familyâs business to suffer any more losses... Just the mere thought of it made her frown.
Sophia reached for the shrimp paste and added it to the spicy soup. âWhy would I do that? I asked you out because I havenât seen you for a very long time. I just wanted to see how youâre doing.â
âIâm truly conscience-stricken, so I havenât been well at all,â Leah said with a sigh, âMy body has not been well recently. Actually, I have to go now to make it in time for my appointment at the hospital. Do you mind if I leave first?â
Sophia chose one of the cooked shrimp paste and gulped it down. With a laugh, she replied, âBetween being late to your doctorâs appointment and negative press, which one do you think is more important?â
âTheyâre both important, I canât choose.â Leahâs face seemed to have paled slightly.
âWhat if you have to choose one?â Sophia pressed on.
Leah eyed her for a while before her expression changed. âI am indebted to you, so just be straightforward with me if you want anything. If itâs within my working capabilities, Iâll definitely lend a hand,â she said gently.
During a negotiation, the biggest taboo was not being able to hold your stand. The person who asked questions first would basically lose the upper hand. Sophia had always been the first to break this rule, but this time, it was Leah.
âWhite Industries and Jones Group collaborated on a project a while ago and Jones Group has yet to make the remaining payment of 162 million. As the chief financial director of Jones Group, itâs safe to say that youâre aware of this, no?â Sophia asked.
However, Leah was shocked. âI donât know anything about this. 162 million is a huge sum of money for many people but to both Jones and White Industries, itâs just a drop in the bucket. Thereâs no need for me to pay special attention to it.â
Both the Jones Group and White Industries were huge business enterprises that had hundreds and billions of market value. Hence, it was only normal for those unmindful to assume that a billion was considered nothing to huge corporations. Sophia was once one of those unmindful ones.
However, now that Leah had said so, it was obvious that she was taking advantage of Sophiaâs lack of knowledge in this expertise.
Sophia had played along with her for most of the day now and she could not be bothered anymore. âSend in the remaining money by 12 midnight tonight. Otherwise, Iâll leak this to the media outlets and start rumors that Jones Group is playing such tricks on White Industries as a directed personal attack at me.â
Seeing that Leah was pretending to fidget her phone casually, Sophia smiled. âAs a fellow friend, let me advise you not to even consider recording this down to expose me. The public might think that you fabricated it as an attempt to frame me. That wouldnât be good for your reputation, donât you think so?â
Naturally, Sophia had already thought of everything Leah would consider. Leah bit her lip and said, âYouâve misunderstood, Iâm just checking the time.â
She turned her phone screen to Sophia to show her before placing her phone back down on the table.
âYou donât have to show it to me. I trust that you wouldnât use such low tactics.â Sophia took a piece of beef tripe and dipped it in the soup before dipping it in the pre-prepared sesame sauce. Yum, it tasted good.
Ignoring Sophiaâs question, Leah glanced at her stomach and asked, âI heard that youâre pregnant, but why donât you look at least two months pregnant?â
Clank!
The chopsticks slipped out of Sophiaâs hand as she gave Leah a distraught look before bending down to pick them up.
âTheyâre dirty now,â Leah said as she called a waiter over, âExcuse me, can we have another pair of chopsticks here please? Thank you.â
Perhaps Sophia had panicked slightly. Her pastel yellow sweater now adorned a stain caused by the sesame sauce that had splattered over it. She gave Leah a somber look and said through gritted teeth, âWhat do you mean by that?â
A waiter came over with a new pair of chopsticks and thoughtfully refilled the soup in their pot before tuning down the heat.
âI didnât mean anything.â Leah fluttered her eyes as a cheerful smile spread across her exquisite face. âIâm just warning you that you shouldnât push me if you donât want to be pushed. Letâs just stay in our own lanes and keep clear of each other from now on, shall we?â
The expression on Sophiaâs face instantly changed as she curled her fists.
âI havenât had much contact with Grandpa Harris, but from what I know, heâs a very temperamental man and canât tolerate lies. I heard a story that when Charles was younger, he once lied to Grandpa Harris that he finished his homework and was punished so severely he actually ended up in the hospital,â Leah said warily.
Sophia stared at Leah in disbelief, her eyes blinking quickly as a troubled look appeared on her face. âAre you threatening me?â
âOh, letâs not use such ugly terms! Iâm just giving you a small taste of your own medicine,â Leah said slowly, âSophia, from the bottom of my heart, I congratulate you for getting together with Charles.
âBut you shouldnât go around bullying others just because you have Charles standing behind you. Itâs not fair for everyone else, donât you think so?â
Sophiaâs pastel yellow sweater had a V-neck, so everything above her collarbone was visible. As Leah talked to her, her eyes scanned around Sophiaâs neck where she noticed a few fresh hickeys trailing along.
If Sophia was two months pregnant, this was the time where the fetus was the most unstable, so how could they still be intimate? Although other couples may attempt it, knowing Charles' careful behavior, it was highly unlikely for him to take such risks.
Sophia forced out a smile and replied, âIâm skinnier than the average woman, so maybe itâs just not that noticeable yet.â
âIs that so?â Leah asked back with a huge grin.
Sophia did not avert her gaze, though her pupils shifted slightly. âMr. Phillips brought me to my check-up once and even Grandfather came along during one of my appointments. Do you think Iâm capable of doing something with Mr. Phillips and Grandfather watching?â
Leah shook her head. âOf course not.â
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 310 After All, Leah Was My Friend Once Sophia certainly was not capable of that.
âItâs one-thirty now, you still have ten hours until midnight. You can have Jones Group start preparing the payment now.â Sophia looked as if she had secretly heaved a sigh of relief.
âIâm just saying that youâre not capable of that, but that doesnât mean I believe youâre pregnant,â Leah said with a small smile, âSometimes timing and coincidences can be of huge help for people when theyâre up to no good. For example, when theyâre lying.â
