âMiss Jones is so kind.â Sophia looked at her. Every word was squeezed out from her throat.
No one knew better about what had happened two years ago than her and Leah.
âYou were my friend after all. How can I blame you?â Leah sighed. âIf I were to blame you, I wouldâve sued you two years ago. I wouldnât have let you get out of prison so easily.â
âShould I thank you then?â Sophia suppressed the anger in her chest. Sarcasm filled her eyes.
Easy?
She was in prison for two years. She had to endure the humiliation from that group of people every day. She was even on the brink of death a few times, but Leah was saying that she had it easy?
âYou donât have to be a stranger with me.â Leah pulled her hand and said in concern, âI heard that you want to kill yourself? Did you hurt yourself?â
âIâm fine. Sorry to disappoint you.â Sophia pulled out her hand and wiped it on her clothes. She thought it was dirty.
âWhy will I be disappointed?â Leah bit her lip. She was talking so sincerely. âIf something were to happen to you, Iâll never forgive myself.â
Sophia was disgusted by her hypocritical manner. She lowered her head and did not say anything.
âItâs late. Itâs difficult to call a cab now. Why donât I ask my driver to send you home first? Iâll go back after.â There was a sincere look on Leahâs pretty face. She ignored the IV drip next to the bed. It was as if she did not know that Sophia was sick.
Sophiaâs body trembled in anger. She was mad at her shamelessness. However, when she saw Charles from the corner of her eye, she transformed her anger into reluctance and endurance. She pressed her lips together and walked to the side of the bed. She started putting on her shoes.
Leah lowered her gaze slightly. The pleased glimmer in her eyes was hidden.
âStay here and take care of your health. You donât need to go to work these few days.â Charles took out a cigarette and held it between his pointer and middle finger. He did not lit it, and in the end, he put it away.
Leah blinked and said in surprise, âSophia, are you sick?â
Sophia frowned and ignored her. It was all an act. She could never win against Leah when it came to acting.
âWhy didnât you say so?â Leah sighed and said in helplessness, âIf I really sent you back tonight, Charles might think Iâm doing this on purpose.â
âAre you not?â Charles peered at her with a fake smile on his face.
âOf course not.â There was concern in Leahâs eyes. âDonât think of me like that, Charles. Even though Sophia is the reason why Iâll never be able to dance again, I donât blame her at all.â
Charles laughed with an unknown intention. He said to Sophia, âGo back to work after youâre discharged. Donât have any other ideas.â
âYeah.â Sophiaâs hands clenched and unclenched. After hesitating for a while, she said, âThank you for letting me stay in the hospital.â
She could not control her heart. She knew that she should stop having any feelings for him, but his slight concern and kindness restarted her heart again.
She was cheap.
However, she could not change.
Love was as addicting as poppyseeds. She knew it was poisonous, but she could not change it.
âYouâre welcome.â Charles smiled slightly. Her image was reflected in his dark eyes. âYouâll live if you take good care of yourself, and as long as youâre alive...â He leaned next to her ear before whispering, âYouâll be able to repay your debts.â
Sophiaâs heart stopped. She felt like she was in an icehouse where the cold was piercing into her bones.
She watched as Charles and Leah left the room. People would get jealous of the handsome man and beautiful woman. Meanwhile, Leah lowered her head to look at her uniform and the hole on her hand made by the needle. She laughed mournfully.
She was merely a clown who had stepped between the couple match made in heaven. She was pathetic and lamentable.
...
In the depths of the night, the coldness of the night was piercing.
Ding!
The door of the lift opened, and Charles pushed Leah out of the lift. Then, they walked out of the hospital. âYour doctor is so special for asking you to come back for physical therapy at 10:30 pm.â
âCharles, donât make fun of me.â Leah pouted. She looked like an alluring damsel. âPhysical therapy is just an excuse. I just want to come and look at Sophia.â
âReally?â Charles asked. His eyes were dark.
âOf course.â Leahâs right hand was on the handle of the wheelchair. She said with her head lowered, âI heard Sophia wanted to kill herself, so I rushed over. Iâm scared something might happen to her.â
âIt has only been an hour after Sophiaâs suicide attempt, and youâve already heard the news. You gather information quite fast,â Charles scoffed and said profoundly.
âItâs just a coincidence.â Leahâs eyes glinted. After the party, she had followed Charles and saw that he came to the hospital. Hence, she followed him.
She did not expect that he rushed to the hospital to look for Sophia!
She felt horrible. Then, she probed. âWhat about you? Why are you here? Did you come here after hearing that she wanted to kill herself?â
Charles stopped walking. He strode to the front of the wheelchair and towered over her. His eyes were dark.
âI was just asking.â Leah smiled. She felt even more horrible now. âIf you donât want to tell me, you donât have to.â
Did Charles come all the way here just to see Sophia?
âLeah.â In the dim streetlights, she could not see Charlesâ face clearly.
Leah grunted a reply. She lifted her head to look at his handsome face. There was admiration and yearning in her eyes.
She liked it when Charles called her name. Whenever he said her name, her heart would start racing.
âYouâre smart. You should know whatâs an appropriate question and whatâs not. You also should know what you should do and what you should not.â
Charlesâ right hand was on the wheelchair. There were creases on his suit because he was bending down.
Leahâs heart skipped a beat. She blinked and said, âAm I? My mom always says that Iâm stupid.â
âHeh.â Charles straightened his back and chuckled with an unknown intention. Then, he walked over to the Bentley that was parked on the side.
After he got into the car, he lowered his window and said flatly, âDonât follow me next time. Itâs easy to hit the car in front as a result of tailgating. Itâs very dangerous.â
Leahâs face was frozen. She opened her mouth to say something, but he did not give her the chance. He rolled up his window immediately and disappeared from her vision.

âIf I really am smart, I wonât use my leg as a stake.â Leah placed her hand on her broken leg and looked at Sophiaâs room. She muttered, âSophia, why did you come back with no shame?â
...
Sophia went home after staying one night in the hospital. She did not have much money. She could not spend all of them on the hospital bill.
âYo, you came back.â Tiffany was on the bed. There was a bandage wrapped around her head. She looked comical. âI thought you died out there.â
âTiffany, shut the f*ck up if you donât want to get hit again.â Megan was doing her makeup. When she heard Tiffany, she said while furrowing her brows.
