Chapter 27 of 493

Chapter 30

”Why didn’t you say anything if you were here? You scared me, coming out of nowhere!” Elaine Young smiled abashedly as she pulled Ryleigh Adams, whose face was bloated red, away.

Only after they left did Sophia drag her legs, which felt as if they had been filled with lead, to walk to the sink.

She washed her face and looked into the mirror. Only then did she realize that her eyes had turned red.

She shuddered and took a deep breath, biting her lip to force down the lumps in her throat as she bent down to wash the tears from her face.

When Sophia gathered herself to return to the party, she arrived only to realize that the party had already ended.

She walked out of the hotel to look for the car, but she could not find the Bentley no matter how she tried... Charles Harris had left her behind.

“Mr. White, it’s a deal then. I’ll have my secretary send the contract over tomorrow.”

“Alright! I’ve wanted to collaborate with you for a long time. I’ve finally found a chance to now.”

At the sound of a familiar voice, Sophia turned around to look at the hotel entrance. She wanted to go forward but was hesitant to do so. She only looked at James White in a daze.

Upon seeing her, the smile on James’ face disappeared immediately. He furrowed his brows as he spared her a glance. Then, he shifted his gaze immediately.

“Dad.” Sophia clenched her fist together as she plucked up the courage to step forward. “Charles isn’t here, you don’t have to...” “Hide from me.’

“Mr. Sullivan, I have to go now.” James immediately interrupted her, pulled open his car door open, and drove off.

Sophia stood where she was, stuck in a daze as she watched the car disappear from her sight. She was at a loss for words, and her heart felt as if it had been chilled to the bone.

People and cars came and went, and lights flashed. Not far away were the sounds of people talking and laughing. The city at night was lively, but it had nothing to do with her.

As the cold wind blew, the tears on her face dried and became wet again.

“No one wants me anymore...” Sophia murmured as she licked her lips and walked directly toward the stream of cars.

Her loved ones did not even want her anymore, so what was the point of her living in such pain for them?

It was better to be dead. When you were dead, you did not have to work yourself to the point of exhaustion, and neither did you have to be snubbed at by others.

Watching the vehicle approach from a short distance, Sophia closed her eyes and spread out her arms, a smile appearing at the corners of her mouth.

She had never been so close to death as she was now, yet she was not afraid at all. All she could feel was yearning.

Bang!

Just as the car nearest to Sophia was about to hit her, a white Ferrari sped out and collided with the black sedan.

The two cars did not stop immediately after crashing into each other. Instead, they spiraled into the greenery at the side.

Skirkk!

Skirkk!

The traffic on the road descended into complete chaos. It was accompanied by the sounds of brakes in rapid succession.

Sophia opened her eyes, the flickering of the headlights blinding her. She stood dazedly in the middle of the accident and vaguely saw someone staggering out of the Ferrari. They were running toward her in a panic.

Only when the person approached her did she realize that the owner of the car, who had blood all over his head, was her brother.

“Soph, are you okay?” Sterling grabbed her by the shoulder, sweeping his worried gaze all over her. “You...”

“Can’t you pick another place to kill yourself?” The owner of the black sedan came out of his car while holding his bleeding head, interrupting him in rage. “And you, how on earth do you drive? I can’t believe that you just hit me from the opposite lane. Did you buy your license?”

“Stop your chirping!” Tell me, how much? I’ll pay you! Is 100,000 bucks enough?” Sterling signed a cheque and tossed it impatiently to the owner of the black sedan.

Holding the cheque in his hand, the man’s face turned red with anger. “This is not about money. This time I’m not hurt, but what if someone got killed?

Can your stinky money bring back a life?”

“I’m sorry, it’s my fault. My brother only did that because he’s worried about me. I’m really very sorry.” Sophia bowed a ninety-degree bow as she apologized to the other man, still shaken by the memory of the scene just now.

If anything had happened to her brother, yet she remained safe...

She licked her dry lips, her heart feeling as heavy as there was an invisible hand pressing upon it.

“Why are you apologizing to him?” Sterling furrowed his brows as he signed another cheque for the man. “Doesn’t he just want more money?”

Looking at the numbers on the cheque, the man gulped and said no more.

When the traffic police arrived and learned that a private settlement had been agreed upon, they criticized and fined both parties before towing away the badly damaged white Ferrari and black sedan.

Worried about Sterling’s wound on his head, Sophia insisted on going to the hospital.

When she heard the doctor say that he had nearly hurt an important part of his body and would have lost his life, she bit her lip as the tears dropped down without control.

“Don’t listen to the doctors. They just like to exaggerate and charge more money!” Sterling could not bear it when she cried. He glared at the doctor.

“...” The doctor did not feel like holding a grudge against him. “Your wounds are quite deep, and you require hospitalization.”

“No!” Sterling stood up and dragged Sophia out of the hospital despite the doctor’s exasperated attempts to stop him.

If he were to stay in the hospital, Mom and Dad would surely ask him what had happened. They would then blame everything on Soph again!

The night was cold, so he took off his jacket and draped it over her. “Don’t take it off this time. If you regard me as an outsider again, I will really be angry!”

“Sterling,” Sophia said quietly as she stopped walking. “Your wounds are really deep. It’s better that you stay in the hospital.”

“Why are you making a fuss like that quack? If I say there’s no need to, then there’s no need to!”

Sterling leaned in close to her and took a sniff. He showed a complete change of face. “Who let you drink wine? Don’t you know what condition your body is in?”

“I just drank a little bit. I’ll be fine, Sterling,” Sophia’s eyes flashed as she spoke quietly.

“B*llshit!” How could she have just drunk a little bit when she reeked so strongly of alcohol? Sterling furrowed his brows as he asked her, “Does your stomach hurt?”

“F*ck!” Sterling cursed. When he saw how pale her face was, he immediately picked her up and returned to the hospital.

Her stomach problems were really severe. After the doctor finished his examinations, he scolded her for not taking care of her body before he hooked up several bottles of medicine for her and left.

The ward was momentarily quiet. Neither brother nor sister spoke.

A moment later, Sophia asked with a complex heart, “Sterling, just now... Why did you crash into it?”

Any more bad luck, and he would have died.

“If I didn’t crash into it, wouldn’t I have watched you die with my own two eyes?”

At the thought of the scene just now, Sterling still felt scared.

Sophia lowered her head, her heart feeling sore.

She knew that her brother loved her, but she never thought that he would think about her first in a life or death situation.

“Soph.” Sterling placed both his hands on her shoulders and lowered his voice at the thought of her begging for death with her eyes closed. “For my sake, don’t die, alright?”

Sophia lowered her head, her uneven fringe covering the tiredness and bitterness in the depths of her eyes.

“Just bear with me a little longer, okay?” Sterling’s voice was pleading. “I know that I’m useless and unable to fight against Charles Harris, but I’ve already begun learning in the office. Trust me, just a little longer. I’ll think of a way to get you away from Charles Harris!”

“Sterling.” Sophia raised her head, her voice very soft. “But I’m so tired, and I can’t hold it together anymore.”
