Chapter 271

“I said the wrong thing." Master Lewis sighed heavily. "Don't take it to heart, Charles. I am here today mainly to apologize to you and Sophia on behalf of Leah. When she wakes up, she will certainly come and apologize to you."

They exchanged greetings and pleasantries afterward. Although Master Lewis sounded apologetic the entire time and had humbled himself considerably, it was not difficult to hear it in his voice that he was defending Leah the whole time.

There were a few times when Madam Jones and Tiffany tried to interject but were both reprimanded by Master Lewis. During this period of time, Mr.

Jones had also hurried over to offer Sophia a sincere apology.

The group seesawed for almost an hour before Master Harris bid them farewell and led his family away.

Seeing that there was nothing exciting to watch anymore, the onlookers began to disperse in twos and threes as well.

An apple had appeared in Marie’s hand out of nowhere. She munched on the apple and said whilst shaking her head, "Tsk, there isn’t a single fool in this world... Wait, that’s not right."

When she said the last three words, she glanced pointedly at Sophia.

Sophia made no comment on this. There was no denying that she was the fool among this group of people. Even her schemes and life experiences were inferior to them.

—This was also why she still wanted to leave Charles after learning the truth.

However, from the analysis he made in the car, she knew that leaving him was destined to be mere wishful thinking. The only thing she could do now was to counter every move as they arose instead of stubbornly evading because that would only make her even more passive.

"You talk way too much." Charles glanced at her with a faint look of warning in his eyes.

Marie gnawed what was left of the apple in two or three bites and threw the core into the trash can, grinning from ear to ear. "I got two people to record Madam Jones' performance just now."

"Good job. Your bonus this month will be doubled." Charles praised her and took Sophia by the hand and walked toward Dream Club.

Marie thought that Sophia would resist at first, but instead, she found her standing next to him compliantly and unmoving. The corners of her eyes were raised slightly and she clicked her tongue.

"Thanks, Boss." Marie followed the two of them, gloating. "When Master Lewis came over, the two guys behind him mixed into the crowd and took pictures. I’m guessing nothing good will come out of this."

Charles was not surprised by this. In fact, he had noticed it when Master Lewis came over.

"Was he trying to whitewash Leah when he apologized just now?" Sophia paused for a moment and turned to ask Charles.

Before he could say anything, Marie laughed. "The court trial’s verdict is now ironclad. He can whitewash all he wants and it will still be useless."

There were ripples in her eyes and twinkling in them. "Master Lewis is just trying to pull the Lewis and Jones families out of trouble as much as possible by doing this. This is also the best way to deal with the problem at the moment. Am I right, Mr. Harris?"

"Mm." Charles nodded.

Sophia pressed her lips firmly and lowered her head, entering Dream Club with them.

She and these people were worlds apart. Unfortunately for her, there was no way she could avoid contact with them in the days to come...

Powerless.

This word best described her current mood of being in a situation like that.

"Come to my office. I just received a can of good tea leaves." Marie led the way gracefully but looked pensive when she noticed Sophia's expression.

Charles lowered his head to look at Sophia, holding her hand a little tighter. "I'm here."

"Cough!" Marie pushed the office door open, stepped aside, and teased him. "Mr. Harris, you’re getting better and better at saying honeyed words now."

Charles darted her a sidelong glance and asked, "Where is the tea?"

"What's the hurry?" Marie pouted. "Come in, both of you. I’ll make the tea right away."

Charles closed the door after Sophia had come in, then sat on the couch and asked, "What did Mr. Fredrickson say?"

Mr. Fredrickson Russell was a shareholder who held the most shares in Harris Corporation other than the Harris family. Charles did not know much about him. All he knew was that he shared a close relationship with a large American consortium and was probably one of the heirs of that consortium.

"Don’t even get me started on that!" Marie rolled her eyes and said helplessly, "That person is like a blockhead most of the time. Others can go on and on all day and I’d be surprised if he could even give a single response.”

“Who would’ve thought? He was just like a madman in bed, spewing obscenities and so full of vigor. I had to risk breaking my waist just to give him a good time, called out to his brother and his father, tossed and turned in bed for almost an entire night in exchange for a single OK from him!"

Sophia raised her head to look at her, a trace of astonishment on her face.

"Are you surprised?" Marie raised her eyebrows. "There are so many good-looking women out there but only so few who are capable. Having the opportunity to use our bodies in exchange for resources is a form of advantage, you understand?"

Sophia knew that there were many instances where similar cases had happened in the circle. She had neither objected nor agreed to it. When Marie asked her the question, she simply nodded her head.

"How are you so innocent when you’re born into the White family? I really don’t know if I should say that Mr. White is too kind or too terrible toward you!" Marie sighed and went back to the topic. "Blockhead told me that the other directors agreed with him. They all hope that you will continue to hold the position as the president.”

She paused for a moment. "But two of your aunts and your uncle might switch sides."

Sophia’s fists clenched slightly and lowered her head as she listened to her evaluation. A multitude of thoughts running through her mind.

"Mm." Charles frowned imperceptibly. "Grandpa told me."

When the water started boiling, Marie made two cups of tea and served a cup to each of them, sighing. "Master Harris is doing some really mad things lately. He would rather use the shares you have as a reward just to take you down from your position as the president."

"Not just to take me down." Charles sneered. "He also wants me to be Justin’s assistant, to be a money-making tool for only a capped salary."

Sophia knew that Charles’ situation in the Harris family was not too good, but she did not know that it was actually so terrible.

She turned her head to look at him, her expression changed several times, her throat tightened for some reason.

Marie was currently drinking tea and choked upon hearing this, after a long while, she straightened out the expression her mouth made. "Has Master Harris... gone mad?"

"He has stage four lung cancer with not much time left to live. He needs to pave the way for his favorite heirs, of course." Charles picked up the teacup, brought it to his lips, and blew it. There was a flash of coldness in his eyes.

Marie put down the teacup, walked over, and touched his head with great sympathy, saying in a pitiful manner, "Oh, you poor child..."

"Get lost!" Charles smacked her hand away with a frown.

"How mean!" Marie rubbed her hand that was sore from the slap, squeezed her way toward Sophia, and sat down. "Look, your man can’t even fend for himself anymore. Do you want to learn a thing or two about how to manage a company? In case you need it in the future, you can...."

Charles narrowed his eyes at her. "Marie Langdon."

"Fine, I won't say it!" Marie raised her hands to surrender. Her desire to live was very strong. "How’s the tea? It’s good, isn’t it? Take it with you if you want it. I won't charge you too much, just two thousand will do!"

She did not stand up when she was talking and clung tightly onto Sophia, nearly climbing on her lap.
