Charles looked at the top of Sophiaâs head, put his arms around her waist and pulled her into his arms with little effort. âIf apologizing is useful, why do we need the police?â
Sophia was caught off guard and fell into his embrace. Hearing his steady heartbeat next to her ears, her eyes widened unconsciously and she looked up at him.
âWhatâs wrong?â Charles saw the astonishment on her face. His eyes flickered, lowered his head naturally and pecked her lips.
His figure was reflected in Sophiaâs eyes. She frowned and let go of his hand, wanting to push him away.
But Charles was very strong. The arm that restrained her waist did not move at all and he said instead, âThatâs enough. Donât be angry. If you really like that short evening dress, wear that for me when we get home.â
Sophia was speechless.
She looked back at Leahâs unpleasant expression that could not be concealed, pursed her lips, and her hands that were on Charlesâ chest trying to push him away just now, wound around his neck instead.
âSure.â
Leah looked at the two embracing each other and could no longer maintain the smile on her face.
She coughed softly and said, âI empathize with Charles. Miss Lawrence can be... too much. If Charles is dissatisfied with her and wants to do something about it, I wonât stop it.â
âItâs not that you wonât stop it, but rather, you hope that heâll do something, right?â Sophia leaned into Charlesâ embrace, her entire body tightly wound up, but she still looked at Leah with a sweet smile. âBut Iâm afraid Iâll have to disappoint you. Charles and I are very magnanimous and wonât pursue the things that Miss Lawrence has done.â
Leah bit her lips dejectedly, âI just wanted to apologize on behalf of Miss Lawrence. Why are you saying it like...â
She smiled bitterly and did not finish her sentence.
âSophia White, stop putting words into other peopleâs mouths!â William looked at Sophia nestled in Charlesâ arms and could not wait to drag her out of it. âLeah is kind enough to apologize to you on behalf of Tiffany. What kind of attitude is that?â
Leah pulled at his sleeve and said bitterly, âWill, say no more. Itâs Miss Lawrenceâs fault anyway.â
âItâs her fault, so why should you take the blame for it?â William retorted, turning his head to glare at the unrepentant Sophia, wondering if he was feeling more anger or jealousy.
âThe marriage between the Harrisâ and Jonesâ families has already been decided by the elders. Sophia, do you really want to become the third party and be scorned by everyone?â
Sophia had heard a lot of things much worse than this. She smiled at William and nestled deeper into Charlesâ arms, deliberately saying, âItâs just a political marriage between the big families. Charles doesnât even like Miss Jones. Speaking of which, the relationship between Charles and me has been very good. Itâs Miss Jones who has intervened between us instead.â
She said that to William, but she was looking at Leah when she said it. When she saw the latterâs smile was not as perfect as always, the grin on her mouth became broader.
That was the outcome she aimed for!
âSophia, you... youâre shameless!â William clenched his fists and the veins on his neck popped.
Charles had been looking down at Sophia all the time. When he heard that, he raised his eyes which had turned cold, âMr. Jones should speak more carefully.â
âAm I wrong?â William snorted. âHugging a casual woman in front of your official fiancée. Does Mr. Harris think the Jones family can be bullied?â
Charles stared cold daggers at William. âThen, does Mr. Jones think I can be bullied?â
âWill, stop it.â Leah sighed softly, looked at Charles and Sophia bitterly and turned her wheelchair around. âThe wedding is about to start. Letâs go.â
William stood motionless and Leah pleaded, âWill, just... leave me some dignity.â
âSophia White, even after two years in jail, youâre still unrepentant, trying to ruin Leahâs marriage like this. Youâll get your retribution sooner or later!â
William gritted.
Charlesâs eyes darkened and was about to speak when Sophia beat him to it. âRetribution?â
She laughed softly and looked at Leah meaningfully, âI do believe in karma. People who have done wrong will receive their retribution!â
âWhat do you mean?â William was fuming.
Sophia answered, âLiteral meaning.â
At this time, someone came for Leah and William. The siblings did not linger around and left with their own thoughts.
âYou really donât want me to do anything to Tiffany Lawrence?â Williamâs words kept echoing in his ears. Charles pursed his lips, unbuttoned one button on his shirt, tapping his fingers on the table repeatedly.
Sophia sneered, took a glass of red wine from the waiterâs tray and put it to her mouth.
âEat something before you start drinking.â Charles grabbed the glass of red wine from her hands and put it on the table, before picking up a snack and putting it next to her mouth.
Sophia snatched the snack from him and threw it on the table. âNo need. If you really feel sorry for me, Iâd be happier if you did something to Leah or the Jones family instead.â
Keeping Tiffany in the Lewisâ household so that she could disgust Leah, making Leah play against Tiffany... that was the outcome she was hoping for.
Tiffanyâs IQ was not sufficient to pit against Leah, but with Master Lewisâ protection, it might.
Charles looked at the discarded snack, his eyes dark, and he did not answer immediately.
âHah,â Sophia sneered, pulled the chair and sat down.
Charles sat down beside her and picked up the glass of red wine for a sip, âIt will happen.â
âWhen?â Sophia asked.
There was no reply.
Sophia turned her head to look at the silent Charles, brows furrowed in sarcasm. However, since she did not harbor any hopes, she was not disappointed either.
The wedding had finally begun.
Apart from the invited guests, the dedication of Master Lewis towards this young wife of his was clearly seen from the appointment of the wedding host to the decorations of the wedding arrangements.
When Master Lewis appeared, a middle-aged man with an honest and friendly appearance went on the stage. He looked a little lost and angry.
Especially when Tiffany was handed over to Master Lewis, his anger became more apparent.

But that was to be expected. His daughter was only in her twenties but she was marrying a white-haired man in his eighties, someone old enough to be her grandfather. Any father would be unhappy at that.
Sophia did not look at the bridesmaids and the groomsmen, nor the bride and groom of the wedding. Instead, she stared at the big screen throughout the event.
Even when it was time for the toast, the content on the big screen had not changed. She frowned.
âBe patient. Itâll happen soon,â Charles whispered into her ear.
When he spoke, his warm breath tickled her ear, itchy and intimate. She shrugged her shoulders and moved away slightly. With a hum of acknowledgment, she looked at the stage distractedly.
