Chapter 138

Charles frowned almost imperceptibly and glanced at Sophia. His gaze paused on her chapped lips. Then, he retracted his gaze, opened the door, and went out.

Megan walked over to shut the door. The reserved expression on her face eased up considerably as she sat down on the seat next to her.

"I made some chicken soup and millet porridge. Which one would you like to eat?" Yvette asked, pointing to the two thermos barrels on the table.

Initially, Sophia wanted to say that she had no appetite and did not want to have anything, but when she met Yvette's eyes, the words hanging at the tip of her tongue were morphed into something different. "Millet porridge, then."

Megan stood up immediately after hearing what she said. She filled up a bowl of millet porridge and handed it over to Sophia.

Sophia honestly did not have any appetite. She held the spoon and scooped up some porridge, bringing it to her mouth and blowing it before taking a tiny bite. "How long have you been here, Aunt Harris?"

"Not long." Yvette smiled and said, "Is it hot?"

Sophia replied to her and said that it was just nice before lowering her head to eat the porridge.

"Soph—" Yvette called out to her.

Sophia put the spoon down and raised her head to look at her. "Hmm?"

Yvette glanced at Megan, her lips opened and closed but did not make a sound.

"I’ll go and buy some fruits," Megan said wittily and went out.

The moment the door closed and the two of them were the only ones left in the ward, Yvette finally said, "Your mother quarreled with your dad because of you and now they’re getting a divorce. If it wasn’t because they couldn’t agree on the division of assets after the divorce, they might have already gotten their divorce certificate by now.”

Sophia’s hands trembled slightly, nearly dropping the bowl in her hand. After zoning out for a moment, she responded with a low hum and lowered her head to eat her porridge.

Maybe it was because she had just recovered from a major illness or maybe it was because of some other reasons, but the millet porridge that was supposed to smell fragrant and taste sweet was bland when she put it in her mouth. There was even a hint of bitterness.

Yvette looked at her and sighed softly.

"They couldn’t agree on the division of assets?" Sophia swallowed the millet porridge and raised her head to look at Yvette.

Yvette hummed a reply. "Your mother requested two to eight. Two for her, eight for your father..." She chuckled ambiguously and said with a tinge of sarcasm, "Your father wants your mother to leave the marriage with nothing, saying that the White family’s assets have nothing to do with her."

Actually, Jenny Fisher was the daughter of an aristocratic family. James was only a pauper.

The two knew each other in college and wanted to get married after they graduated. Mr. and Madam Fisher did not approve of their marriage, but Jenny Fisher became pregnant and insisted on sticking with James, hence the old couple agreed.

Jenny Fisher was the Fisher family’s only daughter. Two years after she married James, Mr. and Madam Fisher were killed in a car accident. Hence, the Fisher family’s company was handed over to James and was renamed as White Industries a few years ago.

"Hah!" Sophia sneered, taking out the spoon and picking up the bowl. She ate half a bowl of millet porridge.

Yvette took the bowl and said, "You don’t have to finish it if you can’t."

She then set the bowl on the table.

Sophia sat on the hospital bed with her eyes downcast. There was a grain of rice stuck to the corner of her mouth. Her eyes were dark, and her hands clutching the blanket tightly.

"Don’t you have anything to say?" Yvette took a paper towel and wiped the grain of rice from the corner of her mouth.

"What can I say?" Sophia raised her eyes and tugged at her lips. "The two won’t get a divorce no matter what."

Her father would never divorce her mother as he cared for his reputation very much and would not want to be called an ungrateful person. As for her mother... She was used to relying on her father now. As long as her father gave in slightly, her mother would forgive him immediately.

"It’s hard to say. See, your mother is getting a divorce with your dad this time because of you. You didn’t see that coming, did you?" Yvette took her hand and said earnestly, "You came from your mother’s womb. Will a mother have the heart to watch her own child suffer?"

Sophia pressed her lips tightly and did not utter a word.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Yvette said, "Come in."

Megan walked in with a grin and placed the fruits on the table.

"I'm getting on in years now. My body can't keep up with young people like you anymore." Yvette smiled, let go of Sophia’s hand, and stood up. "I haven’t even recovered my strength from the incident last night. I need to go back and get some rest."

Sophia nodded. "You should go back and get some rest."

"I’ll leave the millet porridge and chicken soup here," Yvette said. "I will come and see you again tomorrow."

Sophia replied, "You don’t have to come if you’re busy or tired. I’m an adult now. I know how to take care of myself. Don't worry about me."

"I watched you grow up, how can I not worry about you?” Yvette protested before opening the door and left.

When she walked out the door, Yvette realized that her son was still around and snapped at him. "Don’t stand here! Go see Soph before she is discharged from the hospital!”

"Ask the driver to send you home. I can take a cab later," Charles said.

Yvette cast a sidelong glance at him. When she walked past him, she grumbled, "It’s too late now..."

A trace of darkness flashed across Charles’ eyes. He cast his eyes downward without a word.

In the ward, Megan brought her right hand to her mouth and made a whispering gesture, her left hand pointing at the door. She whispered, "Mr. Harris is still at the door. He didn't leave."

"Oh," Sophia replied absent-mindedly.

Megan cleared her throat, and her voice lowered even further. "After knowing that you had an accident, Mr. Harris rushed over in his pajamas and slippers and was fined a huge amount of money for speeding and running red lights. Money isn’t a problem for Mr. Harris, really, but his driver’s license has been revoked too. He needs to take a test if he wants to drive again!"

"Oh," Sophia answered with a frown, coming back to her senses slightly.

Her reaction was so indifferent that Megan could not help but say, "Sophia, I think Mr. Harris likes you very much. You didn't even see his ghastly pale face when he learned about your accident..."

"Stop talking about him." Sophia interrupted Megan, squeezing the sheets beneath her.

"Huh?" Megan was taken aback for a moment, asking cautiously, "Sophia, you were so smitten with Mr. Harris in the past. Don’t you feel happy now knowing that he likes you?"

Chapter 137 It's Sophia's Voice "He broke my leg, made me homeless, and forced me to stay in Dream Club to humiliate me. You call this smitten? Should I be happy?" Sophia snorted coldly. "I am not a fan of SM. I don’t enjoy getting abused.”

Megan tugged at her lips stiffly and chuckled sheepishly. "I'm really sorry."

"You don't have to apologize," Sophia said. "I should thank you. If it weren't for you, I would be dead by now."

Megan could not tell if she was sincerely thanking her or if she meant the total opposite. “Sophia, do... Do you think that I’m a busybody?”

Sophia begged to die, but she was the reason why she failed to.

"No. Me wanting to die and you saving my life are two completely different things. They don’t overlap with each other. I should be saying thank you."

Sophia asked, "How did you know that I was trapped on the rooftop?"

Megan's expression sank instantly. "That bastard Ice said he wanted to get back together with me. After asking me out, he drugged me and presented me as a gift to a client whom he’d just met."

She lowered her head and wiped the corners of her eyes before continuing, "I returned to the dormitory at about one in the morning. Tiffany came back not long after me and was acting really weird, so I asked our colleagues to find out where you were and later went to the rooftop to find you."
