"Her condition is looking really bad." The doctor frowned as he looked at him and asked swiftly, "Are you one of Sophia's family members? Her life might be in danger if she proceeds with the operation now, but if she doesnât proceed with the operation, she can only last half a day.
"If you agree to go on with the operation, then put down your signature on the letter of liability in a while. If you don't agree, then weâll transfer her to the ICU right now."
Charles' forehead and the wing of his nose were covered in cold sweat. There was not a single trace of blood on his good-looking face. He clenched his fist and said, "Her family members arenât here, but Iâm her... boss. I can sign the letter of liability..."
"You canât if youâre not Sophiaâs family!" The doctor interrupted him in a hurry. He had no time to ask why Sophiaâs family members were not around.
"Hurry up and ask Sophiaâs family to come over. If they really can't make it, then they can give their consent via phone call or even a phone recording!"
Yvette was never an indecisive person. At this moment, she was faced with a dilemma. "Isnât there another way? Money isnât a problem!"
"Stop wasting time. Please hurry up and give Sophia's family a call!" The doctor's face was full of sweat.
As soon as his voice fell, a series of rushed footsteps were heard.
Sterling was wearing only his pajamas trousers with his upper body completely bare. He came running over with only a slipper on his foot. He roared with scarlet eyes, "Whereâs Soph? Where is Soph?"
"Doctor, he's Sophia's family!" Megan grabbed Sterling's arm hastily and led him to the doctor.
The doctor wiped the sweat from his face with his sleeves and cut the long story short, saying, "Sophiaâs life may be at risk if you proceed with the operation. If you don't wish to proceed, then she will only have half a day left to live. Hurry up and put down your signature on the letter of liability if you agree to go on with the operation!â
The nurse behind him hurried forward, handing some papers and a pen to Sterling.
The weather was not hot at all. In fact, it was slightly cool after the rain. Even so, sweat could not stop flowing down Sterling's forehead. He glared at Charles with crimson eyes, the blue veins on his forehead and neck bulging out. He looked like a devil that had escaped hell.
"Doctor Lance, is the letter of liability signed? If they still donât sign it then we can only transfer her to the ICU!" A nurse rushed out of the emergency room and said in a panic.
Doctor Lance stomped his feet with anger, asking Sterling, "Are you going to sign or not?"
"... Iâll sign it!" Sterling wiped the tears from the corner of his eyes, glared fiercely at Charles, and squeezed these words out through his gritted teeth.
He took the liability letter and pen handed over to him by the nurse, took a deep breath, signed it, and gave it back to the nurse.
The nurse took it and hurried back to the emergency room with the doctor. The emergency room door was shut in no time.
When all this was happening, Charles was only standing on one side in a daze, unable to help and unable to intervene. He did not even have the right to put down his signature because he was not Sophiaâs family member.
He could not describe the feeling in his heart. It was a little painful, a little suffocating, but more of it was fear, panic, and unease. He was terrified that Sophia would die just like that.
He did not want to delve into whether he liked Sophia or not, or the kind of feelings he had for her. There was only one thought in his mind right now âhe must keep her alive!
"Charles Harris! You are a f*cking b*stard!" Sterling walked up to Charles with scarlet eyes and raised his fist.
Megan gritted her teeth, put on a bold front, and stretched out her hands. She stood in front of Charles. "M-Mr. White, Mr. Harris may not have anything to do with this!"
"Step aside!" Sterling's eyes were bloodshot.
Megan trembled with fear but did not step aside. "Mr. White, if... If Sophia wakes up and learns that youâve... beaten up Mr. Harris because of her, then she will... She will..."
Before she could finish speaking, Sterling put his hands down whilst gritting his teeth. He suppressed the anger and hatred surging in his veins and walked to one side.
Megan breathed a sigh of relief. She realized that her back was soaked.
"Sterling," Yvette walked up to Sterling, called him, and gave him a 90-degree bow. "I apologize to you and Soph for the things that have happened to Soph."
Standing on one side, Charles frowned almost imperceptibly. Ultimately, he still did not defend himself.
There were tears in the corners of Sterling's eyes. He gave it a wipe and shook his head at her. "It's all that b*stard Charlesâ fault. This has nothing to do with you. You don't have to apologize to me and Soph!"
"Charles is my son. He did something wrong, so I..." Yvette glanced at Charles, sighed heavily, and changed the subject. "Why are you dressed like that when itâs raining outside?"
When she heard what she said, Marie picked up the dry change of clothes meant for Charles and handed it over to Sterling. "This is Mr. Harris'
clothes. He is about the same size as you. You should be able to fit into his clothes."
"Iâd rather freeze to death than to wear his clothes!" Sterling did not take it. He turned to Yvette with his bare upper body, sounding irritable and somewhat forlorn when he replied to her, "I told my dad that Iâm coming to see Soph and he refused to let me go. He dragged me back and pulled my shirt off!"
What could she say when a father was so cruel to his own daughter?
Yvette consoled him, saying, "Did you not tell your dad that Soph is in the emergency room? If you tell him that, Iâm sure he will..."
"I told him, but he still refused to let me come over!" Sterling interrupted her in distraught. Then, he continued to glare at Charles fiercely. "As long as this b*stard is here to threaten the Whites, my dad will never allow me to come over and see Soph even if she dies!"
Yvette did not say anything else. She was in no position to say anything either.
Nicole arrived not longer after and brought Sterling a set of clothes. "Mom stopped Dad for me and let me come over. You shouldnât blame Mom. She feels terrib..."
"I donât need her hypocrisy!" Sterling yanked out his suit jacket and put it on, still wearing his pajamas trousers and a slipper underneath. His attire was neither fish nor fowl.
The crowd waited outside the emergency room. None of them made a sound. All of them were staring at the tightly shut emergency room door.
Soon, the sky started turning bright as the sun gradually rose from the east toward the southeast.
Charles raised his wrist and glanced at the time. It was half-past nine. Sophia had been in the emergency room for seven to eight hours now.
His heart sank again. It felt like tens of millions of ants were crawling down his throat into his heart and gnawing on it. His throat tightened while his heart ached.
Squeak!
The emergency room door opened. Doctor Lance came out and announced, "We made it."
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 131 Which One Of You Are Sophiaâs Family Member Though it was only three simple words, he had to pant with every word that he said. After he said those words, he slumped to the ground in exhaustion.
From the door that was left ajar, the doctors and nurses who were involved in this operation sprawled out on the ground. All of them looked dead beat. Even so, the curvature on their mouths could not be suppressed no matter what.
Charlesâ taut nerves were finally slightly relaxed at this moment. He pursed his lips while his heart thumped violently. Then, he lifted his leg and was about to enter the emergency room.
Doctor Lance stretched his leg to stop him, saying wearily, "The patient just woke up and will be pushed to the general ward soon.
"You can go in and say a few words to her, but you must make sure that she remains calm. Also, she needs to rest. Itâs best that you come out after saying a few words to her, or you can choose not to say anything at all."
