Sterling was not bothered. He grunted, âHe doesnât even care about his own daughter. Someone who only cares about profit deserves to be bankrupt!â
âAre you for real?â Marie put her hand on her waist and said slowly, âDo you know if the Whites go bankrupt, you wonât be able to spend money as recklessly as you are now? You might have to sell all of your favorite cars in the garage.â
âWhy are you talking so much rubbish? Itâs none of your business if I spend money recklessly or not! Fuck off!â Sterling was not kind or gentle to any woman other than his own wife and sister. He pushed Marie away and lifted his leg to kick Charles.
Marie looked at the security guards and said while frowning, âDid I ask you here to watch? Hurry up and stop Mr. White!â
After she said that, Charles grabbed Sterlingâs leg and pulled it with all his might.
âF*ck!â Sterling almost fell. Fortunately, he grabbed the sofa by his side. However, he accidentally pulled a muscle when he did the split. Cold sweat started to form on his forehead because of the pain.
In a flash, two of the security guards went over and grabbed Sterling on each side.
The one on the left approached the pale Charles and held him according to Marieâs orders.
âMr. Harris, what should we do with Mr. White?â Marie asked, âShould we let the police take him away or what?â
Charlesâ arm was draped across the security guardâs shoulder. The sweat on his forehead was rolling down along the side of his cheek.
He glanced at Sterling and looked away. He answered indirectly, âAsk the security to delete the footage of today.â
âThe footage has to be kept for three months and above,â Marie said.
Perhaps the pain in his leg had lost its effect, so Charles looked dazed. A blush crept up his pale face. âJust delete this. Iâll bear the responsibility.â
âAlright.â Marie ignored Sterlingâs screams and said to the security guard, âThe car is waiting downstairs. Take Mr. Harris downstairs. You should know what can be said and what canât be said.â
The security guard nodded and helped Charles leave the room.
The door was locked from inside, so Sophia could not open it from the inside. She slammed on the door for a very long time. Her voice had gone hoarse, and yet no one opened the door for her.
About half an hour later, Marie opened the door for her.
Sophia thanked her hurriedly and ran toward Room 505. However, the room was abnormally clean. Her torn clothes, the smashed camera, and the broken wine glasses were all gone.
The floor was sparkling clean. It was as if the blood she had seen was just a dream.
She looked all over the room but did not find Charles and her brother. She ran to Marie with her face pale. Her voice was trembling when she said, âMs. Marie, do you know... where my brother is?â
âMr. Harris is badly injured but youâre not asking where he is?â Marieâs lips curled into a nice curve. However, she was not smiling.
Sophia did not care how Charles was or where he was. She grabbed Marieâs arm and asked again, âDid you see my brother?â
âI did.â Marie removed her hands gently. There was a wave of undetectable anger in her smile. âNot only did I see him, but I was almost attacked by him. Mr. White is such a character.â
Sophia licked her dried lips. She was frantic. She could not wait to ask about her brotherâs situation. However, she had to apologize to Marie patiently.
âMy brother lost control because of me, so Iâm apologizing on his behalf.â
âAlright, I understand.â Marie sighed when she saw Sophia fawning over her. She did not know whether she felt pity or other emotions for her. âYour brother is fine. I guess Mr. Harris does not intend to bicker about this with your brother. Donât worry.â
Sophia felt less worried. âThank you for telling me these, Ms. Marie.â
However, she was still concerned. She knew a person like Charles would never let her brother off the hook so easily.
Marie grunted a reply. When she passed Sophia, she stopped and said to her, âYou donât have to work today. Go back and rest.â
âAlright.â It was good to be able to rest. However, Sophiaâs right eyelid kept twitching. She could not stop the uneasy feeling in her heart.
Under everyoneâs watchful gazes, Sophia walked into the elevator barefooted. There was no wind, but she did not wear anything inside. The coldness and emptiness made her feel shameful and embarrassed.
There were three men and two women in the elevator. One of the women pointed at Sophia and tiptoed to whisper something into a manâs ear.
Sophia did not hear what they said, but she kept feeling like they were looking at her and discussing her.
She stood in the corner of the elevator with her legs tightly pressed together. Both of her hands were holding the side of her dress. Her face turned from red to white.
Ding!
When the elevator arrived at her floor, Sophia walked from the corner to the door. When the door opened, she hurried out the door. However, when she was about to walk out, someone grabbed her arm.
She turned around. The person who grabbed her was the woman who tiptoed to whisper to the man. âHi, can I help you?â
The woman smiled at her. Suddenly, she bent down and removed her high heels. Then, she placed them in front of Sophia. âWeâre about the same height. I think our size should be the same. You should be able to fit into these.â
Sophiaâs hand unclenched from her dress. She could feel her throat tightening. She lowered her head to look at the pair of pink high heels. She did not say anything.
âDonât worry about me.â The woman smiled. âMy husband will get a new pair for me later.â
Sophia looked at the shoes. They were branded and looked like they were barely worn. âItâs fine. Thank you. Iâm...â âAn employee here and I live nearby.â
âDonât be shy, Miss. My wife likes the new and hates the old. She told me she wants to buy new shoes recently.â The man bent down and carried the woman on his back. He did not give Sophia a chance to reject him. The two of them left while smiling.
Sophia pressed her lips together and took a deep breath. She put on the slightly bigger pair of shoes and went back to her dorm.
The moment she opened the door, Megan approached her. She asked with a worried look on her face. âAre... Are you okay?â
âIâm fine.â Sophia felt tired. She removed her shoes and sat on her bed with her head lowered. She wanted to call her brother to ask how he was, but she was afraid she might hear some bad news.
Megan sat down next to her and saw the hickeys all over her neck. She opened her mouth a few times but still, no words came out.
âWhatâs wrong?â Sophia did not lift her head. There was obvious exhaustion in her voice.
Megan opened her mouth but did not say anything. She stood up and walked around. Then, she sat back down next to Sophia again. She asked carefully with regret in her voice, âSophia, are you really fine?â
