Chapter 27
âAaaaah!â Farhat screamed in pain. Delightful pain.
Twitch tightened the bandage around Farhatâs leg, the bullet had gone straight through.
However Twitch had to be persuaded to waste even a single bandage on the piece of garbage before him, he was content to let the man bleed out.
Marcus convinced him that Farhat was more useful to them alive. Twitch would have argued but he was too tired and Kazeem needed him more.
Farhat snapped something in his native tongue as pain engulfed his leg, which did not sound very complimentary towards Twitchâs mum.
Narrowing his eyes at Farhat, Twitch pressed his thumb straight down on the bullet hole, keeping it there for a few good moments, before he tied the bandage off.
Farhat shouted in protest, kicking out beneath him but Twitch just smiled.
Adding in a small slap to the wound for good measure, Twitch turned his back on the terrorist and looked at Carlos.
âIâm going back to check on Kazeem,â Twitch glared at Farhat one last time before he climbed out of the cab and shut the door behind him.
As Twitch left, Carlos leaned in, a sadistic and yet fitting, smile spread across his lips.
Farhat narrowed his eyes at Carlos, unsure of what he was going to do.
âYouâre lucky Jules was the one with the gun, if it had been me,â Carlos arched an eyebrow, âYouâre dead body would be littering the side of some Godforsaken road right now.â
Farhat bristled, a soft sheen of sweat covering his skin, as the colour drained from his cheeks.
âBut as it is,â Carlos leaned back, settling into the driverâs seat beside his prisoner, âIâm happy youâre alive.â
A frown appeared on Farhatâs forehead, clearly misunderstanding Carlosâs bipolar behaviour.
âThis way-â Carlos slipped a dagger from his boot, proceeding to pick at the sand beneath his nails.
Farhat watched the dagger with apprehension.
âThis way,â Carlos repeated, pointing the dagger lazily towards him, âI can sleep peacefully knowing that youâre getting tortured every night.â
Carlos sent him a wide, slightly manic, smile.
Farhat jumped in his seat as the door to the cab was opened once again, his bound hands resting in his lap, as he saw the woman.
Jules looked straight past Farhat as if he was not even there and spoke to Carlos, âWeâre just unloading the children from the other truck, and then weâll get on our way. Are you okay?â
Carlos sent Farhat a smile, âYeah, weâre good, but hurry up yeah, Jules?â
Julia arched an eyebrow, âWhy? Have you got somewhere you need to be?â
âYeah, I do. Its roast dinner at the base today,â Carlos chuckled.
Jules laughed as she slammed the cab door shut and limped down the side of the truck.
She must have hit her leg when she was being dragged from under the truck, Julia didnât know but right then no pain could wipe the smile from her face and the elation that she felt in her bones.
Heading around to the back of the smashed up truck, Jules helped Marcus with getting the last few children down from the trailer.
It took the startled youngsters a few minutes to gauge that they were the good guys and a few more minutes until the first few started to peel themselves up off the floor.
Once they did, they saw the terroristsâ bodies piled to the side and the blood that coated their uniforms.
It scared a few of them back into the truck, afraid of what was going to happen to them, but with a few warm words and the promise of food and water, they soon had them all out of the trailer.
The last to leave was a young girl with eyes the colour of coffee stains and clothes that were too heavy for her starved body.
She gravitated towards Julia, her small hands gripping Juliaâs shoulders so tightly that it shocked Jules into silence. She did not look strong enough to have such a tight grip, a testament to her personality.
Picking her up, Julia felt the girlâs leg wrapped around her waist as her arms clung to Juliaâs neck, her face nestled into the crook between her neck and face.
Julia looked over the girlâs shoulder at Marc, who stood holding the hands of two older boys, ready to lead them to the truck.
Unsure of what to do as her heart wrenched with emotion at what she thought this young child must have gone through, Jules smoothed the girlâs knotted hair, remembering the way her own mother had done so.
âItâs going to be a bit of a tight squeeze,â Julia followed Marcus to the other truck, âBut I promise it wonât be for long, and-â
â-No!â the girl screamed in terror, clinging to Juliaâs uniform like an insect that feared for its life if it was to let go.
âOh, okay,â Julia stopped trying to lift her off of her and instead leaned back to look into the girlâs striking coffee coloured eyes, âH- How about you come and ride up the front with me, would you like that?â
Jules was struck by how large her eyes seemed. Twinkling with unshed tears, Juliaâs throat grew dry as the girlâs lips spread into a smile.
It was hidden, but Jules could see, in that smile, a smile of starvation.
After a few seconds, the girl nodded her head before she nestled her face back into her shoulder.
Twitch drew their attention.
Looking up into the truck, Jules saw Kazeem and Ray lying beside each on the floor of the truck. Ray was still unconscious, making Julia worry, but Kazeem seemed to be slightly better.
But they still needed to get him back.
âWe canât fit anymore in here, Marc,â Twitch told them as he quickly checked Kazeemâs pupils once again, âAnd we need to get a move on.â
Marcus and Jules shared a look when an idea sprang into her mind.
âHow would you three,â Jules looked from the girl to the two boys holding Marcâs hands, âLike to come in the cab with me?â
The trio shouted their agreements.
âWould you be alright to drive back with Carlos and Farhat?â Julia asked Marcus as they headed around to the last truck.
âWeâll be fine,â Marcus pulled open the passenger door and helped the two boys climb into the cab, their moods instantly lightened as the escaped the dark trailers they had been cramped in.
âYouâll be okay,â Julia smiled at the girl, reassuring her as she climbed in after the two boys and shut the door quietly behind them.
Letting out a slow breath, Julia turned around to face Marcus.
Neither of them seemed able to speak but their eyes did all the talking.
They were both too exhausted to say anything but their bodies moved closer together until there were merely inches between their lips.
Julia licked her cracked lips, her breathing hitching slightly as she looked into Marcusâs gaze and she saw the unyielding devotion in those depths.
Jules remembered their kiss, a soft tingling sensation forming in the pit of her stomach, when Carlosâs voice called out to them and broke the spell.
âOi, come on!â Carlos shouted through the opened window, âYouâll have enough time for all of that when we get back to base!â
Marcus waved his arm in the air behind him, telling Carlos in no technical way to piss off.
âHeâs right,â Julia tilted her head.
âFrustratingly so,â Marcus kept looking into her eyes, seeming unable to tear himself away.
âIâll see you back at base,â Julia whispered as she pointed over her shoulder at the truck, âI have a truck to drive.â
Marcus began to take a few steps backwards, âDid I mention that I love a woman that can drive a truck?â
Jules shook her head, raising her hand to her ear, as a cocky grin etched its way across his lips, âI canât hear you!â
Marcus kept walking back, âI love you!â He shouted with no hesitation.
Julia could not stop smiling.
Kissing him was fantastic. But hearing those three words was euphoric.
âI still canât hear you!â Julia milked the situation until he shouted it one last time at the top of his lungs.
Anymore and Carlos looked ready to shoot them on the spot.
Heading around to the other side of the cab, Julia climbed up into the driverâs seat and turned on the ignition.
As the engine rumbled to life, vibrating everything around them, Julia gave the children beside her a reassuring smile, âAre we all ready?â
The two boys and one girl jumped up and down the seat, their laughter bringing a smile to Juliaâs lips.
Motioning to Carlos that they were ready, he gave her an enthusiastic toot of the horn as he pulled away.
Jules hit the truck into first, lifted the clutch and they were fell into place behind them.
Cheers of pure delight and happiness went up around them as the children screamed with happiness as they were saved from a life of misery and turmoil.
The sound was music to her ears, but do you know what the most beautiful thing was?
It was the image that occupied her side-mirrors.
Behind them was the mountains, a truck was smashed into a mountain, two jeeps were burning and two bodies were piled by the side.
It was the image of where they had been shot at, blown up, kicked and punched.
But it was also the place where Julia discovered herself once again, it was the place where she overcame her need for revenge and it was also the place where they saved upwards of fifty children from a life of hell.
And if that wasnât worth it, then Julia did not know what would be.
