An imperial guard reported the crown princeâs death to the empress.
The imperial guard gave the empress the crown princeâs clothes they found on his dead body and left the empressâ chamber.
The empress hugged her sonâs clothes and cried pitifully. She cursed Consort Mu and Pei Zhang until she lost consciousness.
The emperor visited the empress after she woke up and he ordered an imperial physician to sedate her.
The imperial physician followed the emperorâs order and left the chamber.
The emperor returned to his chamber and sobbed.
Even after the empress was sedated she couldnât sleep peacefully. She was startled awake by familiar voices.
âImperial mother, status, power and money will turn to smoke... your heart doesnât need to waste energy about smoke... everything will turn to smoke... itâs better to let go of swords to free the heart... pay with your life... retribution...â Bei Dou taunted the empress.
âWhoâs there?â the empress asked.
The empress looked in four directions until she saw a tall masked figure.
âAre you human or a demon?â the empress asked. âImperial guard!â
âYou donât need to scream,â Bei Dou said. âEveryone around you is dead.â
âWho are you?â the empress asked. âWhat do you want?â
âIâm a demon... Iâm here to take your life... you killed many people... you need to die,â Bei Dou said and pulled out a sword. âYouâre familiar with his sword. That year you gave it to my father... I love it and brought it here to escort you to hell.â
âYouâre from the Thinh Household,â the empress said.
âIâm not human... Iâm a demon,â Bei Dou said and pointed the sword in the empressâ direction. âCome here, you killed too many people. Theyâre all waiting for you in hell, everyone from the Thinh Household, Consort Chen and her child.â
âConsort Chen and her child?â the empress asked confusedly.
âThatâs right,â Bei Dou said. âYou killed all of them. Theyâre all waiting for you.â
âI didnât kill Consort Chen and her child!â the empress cried out.
âIf it wasnât you then who else would kill them?â Bei Dou asked.
âIt was...â the empress said. After her panic waned she looked closely at the tall masked figure. âYouâre not a demon, youâre a human! What do you want?â
Bei Dou jabbed his sword at the empressâ throat. âIâm here to take your life!â
âDid you kill the crown prince?â the empress asked.
âThe truth is heâs still alive,â Bei Dou said.
The empressâ grieving heart felt hope.
âWhether your son lives or dies depends on you,â Bei Dou said.
âWhat are you implying?â the empress asked.
âIf you love your son then exchange your life for your sonâs life,â Bei Dou said. âIâll spare your sonâs life if you kill yourself.â
âHow can I believe your words alone?â the empress asked. âLet me see my son first.â
Bei Dou pulled out a small chest and threw it at the empress.
The empress opened the small chest and saw two fingers and on one finger was the ring that she gave her son.
âDo you need me to cut him into pieces for you to see before you kill yourself?â Bei Dou asked.
âNo!â the empress said. âThis is good enough. I believe you.â
The empress looked at her sonâs fingers and cried.
âYou have three days,â Bei Dou said. âIf I donât hear news of your death then youâll see your sonâs arm. Think about your decision carefully. If you die, your son canât be the crown prince but he can live.â
âAre you Pei Zhangâs servant?â the empress asked.
âCompared to your useless son seventh prince is more suitable to sit on the throne,â Bei said and left the empressâ chamber.
