After a nap, Yan Shi Ning thought about the emperorâs motives.
âPei Jin, Iâm not certain the emperor poisoned me,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âWhy?â Pei Jin asked.
âI donât know what the emperorâs motives to poison me are,â Yan Shi Ning said.
Pei Jinâs head and heart were muddled earlier. Yan Shi Ningâs logic reminded him that he forgot to think about his fatherâs motives for poisoning Yan Shi Ning.
Pei Jin and Yan Shi Ningâs eyes shone at each other.
âShi Ning, do you think itâs that person too?â Pei Jin asked.
Yan Shi Ning nodded her head. âPerhaps that person used Princess Kang Hua in hope of using her to kill me. Besides, Princess Kang Hua didnât need to wait, she could have poisoned me the moment I arrived in the imperial city.â
âIn the past Bei Dou and I had the same thought as you,â Pei Jin said. âThen we thought perhaps she wanted you to die outside the Yan Manor to deflect suspicions... but looking at the past now, perhaps that assumption is wrong.â
Yan Shi Ningâs chest hurt while remembering how viciously Princess Kang Hua stabbed her and she wondered if Princess Kang Hua was still alive.
âThatâs right,â Yan Shi Ning said. âIf Princess Kang Hua wanted to kill me, she would have killed me at the Yan Manor.â
âEarlier like you,â Pei Jin said. âI thought it was imperial father. But now I think itâs that person, she has a motive to kill you.â
An image of the kind Consort Mu appeared in Yan Shi Ningâs head and she sighed. âGlancing at her, she seems like a kind person.â
âShi Ning, do you remember what I told you about Consort Chen?â Pei Jin asked.
Yan Shi Ning remembered Pei Jin confided in her about how Consort Chen was poisoned by Fu Gui and she nodded her head.
âAt that time I suspected there was something wrong about the fragrance of the incense sticks,â Pei Jin said. âSo I hid them but later they disappeared. Thinking about it now, I think she found out I hid them and sent someone to retrieve the incense sticks. I think Consort Mu knows that I know the incense sticks were poisoned.â
âThatâs why I think she wants borrow a dagger to kill me,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShe and seventh brother used Yan Shi Tingâs fake pregnancy to oppose the empress and the crown prince,â Pei Jin said. âThey would do anything to eliminate anyone who poses a threat to them big or small.â
âPei Jin, what should we do now?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Pei Jin laid his hands on Yan Shi Ningâs stomach. âI need to ask someone to be certain who poisoned you. After Iâve confirmed it then I can plan what to do next.â
âWho do you need to ask?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âThe empress,â Pei Jin said.
âThe empress?â Yan Shi Ning asked. âIf the empress denies it then itâs possible Consort Mu is the culprit. But if the empress did it, would she admit it to you?â
âI have a way to make the empress tell me the truth,â Pei Jin said.
âPei Jin, are you hiding anything else in your stomach?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Pei Jin held Yan Shi Ningâs hands and put them below his stomach. âInside your husbandâs stomach isnât hiding anything. But your husband is hiding something here.â
Yan Shi Ningâs face flushed red. She pulled his hand to her mouth and bit hard. âEven if youâre about to die, you wouldnât know how to be serious.â
Yan Shi Ning didnât think Consort Mu would be so cruel only to ensure Pei Jin didnât have a son. She was worried if other people found out she was pregnant then something bad could happen to their child.
âI think itâs not the right time for our child to be here,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShi Ning, do you know what Bei Dou gave me after we got married?â Pei Jin asked.
âWhat?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âA remedy to prevent pregnancy,â Pei Jin said.
âWhy didnât you use it?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âIf I canât protect my wife and child,â Pei Jin said. âThen I wasted more than twenty years of living.â
Yan Shi Ning didnât know why Pei Jinâs stern tone warmed her heart.
âPei Jin, do you want to be the emperor?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âYan Shi Ning, I want to see how youâll look as an empress and how youâll fool the world thinking youâre a gentle empress,â Pei Jin said.
Yan Shi Ning thought Pei Jin was a capable man. If he truly wanted to be emperor then she would support him. But she didnât expect him to be amused at the thought of them being the emperor and the empress.
âThen I donât want to be the empress,â Yan Shi Ning said. âIf Iâm the empress, Iâm not allowed to move around while others bow in front of me. Thereâs nothing amusing about being the empress.â
âWife, if youâll be unhappy as the empress,â Pei Jin said. âThen your husband will continue being a carefree prince.â
Yan Shi Ning was certain Pei Jin didnât want to be the emperor and she thought it was a pity to waste his abilities. She was curious how he would look wearing an emperorâs clothes and sitting on the throne. But an emperor had more than three thousand concubines. That thought soured her heart.
âShi Ning, youâre injured so it gives you an alibi to stay at home and make it easier for you to hide that youâre pregnant,â Pei Jin said. âFor the next year Iâll feed you and wait for our child to be born. Wife, why must you be pregnant? How will I endure the nights? Wife, think about it. I can see you, touch you but I canât eat you. Isnât this a way to kill me?â
Yan Shi Ning laughed at Pei Jinâs pitiful face. âPei Jin, you can marry a second wife.â
Pei Jin looked at Yan Shi Ning like he wanted to kill her.
Yan Shi Ning pouted her lips. âI was being sincere.â
Pei Jinâs hands held Yan Shi Ningâs head. âWife, wake up! Donât dream during the day and speak nonsense!â
Yan Shi Ning didnât show that Pei Jinâs words sweetened her heart.
âPei Jin, how are you going to deal with the empress?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âShi Ning, do you want to know about Bei Douâs real identity?â Pei Jin asked.
âYes,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShi Ning, do you know about what happened to the Thinh Household in the south?â Pei Jin asked.
âThinh Household?â Yan Shi Ning asked. âAre you talking about the Thinh Household that was convicted of treason, their properties were seized and they were killed a few years ago?â
Yan Shi Ning was surprised when she heard how many horse carriages it took to carry all of the Thinh Householdâs properties to the palace.
âBei Douâs real name is Thinh Kien Nan,â Pei Jin said. âHeâs the oldest son and the thirteenth generation of the Thinh Household.â
Pei Jin remembered after Bei Dou saved his life, Bei Dou pointed to the south and asked him to call him Bei Dou. But Bei Douâs heart was in the north, Bei Dou wanted to kill the empress who framed and killed Bei Douâs family.
âBei Dou didnât want to be a merchant like his father and ancestors,â Pei Jin said. âHe likes learning about medicine. When his family home was on fire, I saved him from the fire. He suffered burns on his body and it was hard to recognise him. Wife, didnât you always ask me why Bei Douâs face doesnât change expression? Itâs because his real face was burnt.â
âHis... face?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âIn the past he wore a mask,â Pei Jin said. âLater in Southern Jiang, he met a master physician who gave him a new face. Thatâs why no one knows his real identity.â
âWhy did you save him?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âI met Bei Dou long ago,â Pei Jin said. âAt that time I was asked to perform duties outside the palace and I was attacked by assassins. It was Bei Dou who saved me. So when I knew about his family, I wanted to save his life.â
âDid the Thinh Household commit treason?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âWhat happened to the Thinh Household involves the empress,â Pei Jin said.
