âMy Prince!â
Chris frowned to himself. He was quite happy asleep, who was shouting?
âMy Prince, where have you been?â
A shard of agonising flame ripped through his skull, he groaned. He wasnât in pain while he was asleep. He much preferred sleep.
âAre you OK?â the female voice had got much closer. He heaved himself onto all fours, feeling warm soil beneath his fingers.
Why was he outside?
His splitting headache had caused a fog, he couldnât remember anything. His chest was burning, his limbs felt heavy but not too bad. A strange taste in his mouth. He tried to take stock if he were injured but couldnât feel anything apart from his head.
He forced his eyes open, instantly bathed in orange sunlight, he glanced around to see he was in woodland. Where, he had no idea.
âMy Prince, can you get up?â the same female voice again.
âYeah,â he grunted, forcing himself to his feet.
âIâm glad I found you! What are you doing here?â His arm was taken up, draping around her shoulders. He realised his mind was foggy, too foggy to be normal.
âI think you had too much last night.â
âNo⦠No I⦠Someone took me, they had a witch.â He frowned to himself, his memory seemed more a dream but he was certain it was real.
âBad trip, eh? Iâll get you to the infirmary, no oneâs going to believe you met a witch, My Prince.â
âLauren?â
âOnly just realised?â
âShe.. she did something.â
âOf course they did, my mate. I believe you. Iâll get you to the infirmary.â
âNo. I need to-â
âShh, sh, youâve had a fright, thatâs all. Iâll look after you, thatâs what mates do after all, huh?â
âYouâre not my-â
âBest save your strength,â she cut him off again, winding through trees that all looked the same.
His features were in a constant frown. His jumbled mind made little sense. Images were coming to him in random order like a dream. Had he just dreamt? Maybe he had been sleepwalking.
He didnât sleepwalk.
He allowed himself to be led through the rough trees, his bare feet catching on gnarled roots before they broke through the tree line to see the palace. At least she was taking him home and not to some ramshackle cabin to nurse him herself. He shivered at the thought.
âLetâs get you well, My Prince, youâve clearly had a night,â she announced as they entered the entrance hall, she steered him down the corridor.
âI was taken⦠someone took me from bed.â
âNo one can break into the palace. You had a nightmare.â
âI donât need the infirmary!â
âJust to check you over.â
âMy head hurts, thatâs all.â He frowned, he hadnât meant to say that. He didnât need to admit to this female how he felt.
âAll the more reason to get you checked over.â
Before he knew it, he was going through the door to the palace infirmary where a healer was sat at a desk. âMy Prince, what can we do for you?â
âI found him in the woods, just-â
âI was kidnapped. They injected wolfsbane and⦠Iâm not sure.â
âI think he had a bit too much-â Laura tipped her hand in a drinking motion.
âI understand, take a seat, My Prince, weâll give you a quick-â
âI have not been drinking!â Frustration riled within him, he hated being treated like a pup; he was a full grown! âLaura⦠Lauren, whatever your name is. Thank you for getting me to the Palace, I can manage from here, you are dismissed.â
Lauraâs face scrunched in confusion. âWhat do you mean?⦠I need to be here, Iâm your-â
Chris reared up to full height, ignoring the pounding in his skull as his frustration and fury filled the room. âIf you say you are my mate one more time I donât give a shit, Iâll tear you limb from limb! Go!â he growled much more like his father than he thought he ever could sound.
âI think youâve had a knock, darling, just calm-â Chris took a menacing step towards her, crowding her towards the door.
âDo you wish to continue your sentence?â he snarled. He couldnât say where his anger was coming from, he still didnât have his wolf with him, this was all him. Things he usually kept locked inside, words that were reserved for himself only were flying from his mouth.
âMy Prince, maybe you should take a seat,â the healer stated again, gesturing towards a bed but Chris wasnât feeling all too compliant. He took another step towards Laura, his bare chest heaving, his fists clenched so hard blood was dripping onto the wooden floor.
âBaby, just go sit down,â she cooed as if he werenât threatening her, werenât glaring at her with murderous gold eyes.
His bloodied hand shot out to fist her t-shirt, âLast chance to get out of my sight.â
âChris! Stand down,â Wadeâs voice boomed from the door just behind Laura.
âNo,â he growled.
âChristopher.â
âYouâre not my father.â
âI am 100% certain you do not want him here. Let Laura go.â His warm hand clenched Chrisâ prying his fingers off her clothing. âGuards, take her to the cells.â
âWhat?â Laura piped up.
âThe King stated if you were to leave your suite you were to be arrested.â He moved out of the way for two of the palace guards to enter, grasping her arms behind her back.
âChris! You canât let them do this!â
âWhy should I care?â
âIâm your mate! Iâm your true mate! You canât lie about this!â
âDelusional bitch,â Chris muttered.
Laura screamed as she was dragged from the infirmary, the sounds echoing down the corridor for longer than was comfortable.
âMy Prince, please sit,â the healer repeated herself.
âFine!â he huffed, plonking down.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âYou heard my mind link, right?â
âWhen?â
âI⦠I donât know, how long have I been missing?â
âMissing? You havenât⦠what happened?â
Chris looked wildly around in confusion. âSomeone took me from bed⦠like Monday night.â
âItâs Tuesday. No-one had any reason to think you werenât home.â
âJaxson! Whereâs Jaxson?â
âIâll send someone to your quarters, Iâm sure heâs there.â
âNo⦠No, they wolfsbaned him⦠I donât know what happened, they⦠they were taking him away!â
âHave you been given wolfsbane?â
âYes.â
The healer instantly began inspecting him, looking in his eyes, his mouth, âDo you have your wolf?â
Chris shook his head.
âLay down,â the healer demanded.
Chris huffed but did so, hoping the action would ease his head.
âWhat do you remember?â Wade asked a little more gently.
âItâs jumbled like a dream. I remember a room, just⦠like wooden, maybe a cabin or shack. I was tied⦠there were ropes around me. There was this woman, a red-haired, he kept calling her witch. She⦠she did something. It felt hot, like burning inside. Woke up to Laura.â He rubbed his head, desperate to remember more.
âWhat male?â
âI donât know⦠he was wolf. I didnât know him.â He sniffed as if to take himself back, trying to remember if there was anyone else there. âThere were others⦠not in the room, I could smell them.â
âCan you remember where you were? How long it took to get there?â Wade prompted.
âNo⦠I was unconscious.â
âCan you remember anything said in the spell?â
âShe⦠she said I need to tell the truth. That I canât lie⦠I didnât understand.â
Wadeâs eyes glazed for a moment before he came back to the room, a slight concerned look on his face.
âWhat is it?â
Wade let out an empathetic breath, âWe canât find Jaxson.â
