Samantha was glad for spring break. Medical school was challenging but she had a talent for diagnostic medicine. Her visions were mostly private, but a few of her closest friends knew of her special abilities. She herself knew that using her visions to become a diagnostic specialist would enable her to help so many people. However, today she needed to do something different. She had driven out to the country because it was time, she needed to do this every five years and she needed to find an area with a lot of open space. Her drive took her past some newly developed areas and she actually teared up when she saw the torn up natural areas being paved over and built upon. When would people learn to take care of nature and stop expanding and raping forests, swamps and other needed natural areas? So many species were being eradicated or endangered because they could not adapt to new environments. Such a waste always brought Samantha to the point of tears. Soon she stopped the car, in the early morning just before dawn, and walked into the open field along the country road. She had removed her shoes and her feet luxuriated in the wet grass. She climbed the low hill and gently laid on the grass looking up at the morning sky as it lightened before sunrise. Her arms and legs were not really chilled by the dampness as she spread her hands on the ground and let the thin weblike roots spread out into the soil around her. She became one with the ground and was gently anchored to it as the entire field was overtaken with the tangle of roots and sprouts that emanated from her body and spread life. As the sun rose and sunlight climbed the hillside, Samantha sat up and watched it. The light slowly covered the hill and the blooms responded by opening their faces to greet it. The air filled with the scent of the blossoms, with the scent of Samantha. She also lifted her face to the sun letting it fill her with energy. They gave her so much, doing this for them gave her joy. She was so happy to be able to keep at least one species from extinction. Perhaps this time the morning breeze would carry the pollen to new beginnings. Only time would tell.

The boy ran from the barn after finishing his chores. He loved to watch the sunrise. He turned to greet the morning sun as it rose above the distant trees and he stretched and enjoyed the morning breeze before the heat of the day. There was a wonderful sweet and refreshing smell being carried by the wind this morning. He took a few deep breaths and then turned to go to the house for breakfast.

Unfortunately a few days later he came down with a cold requiring him to rest up for several days before he felt better...
