With trembling hands and a racing heart, I watched as the group of mean girls closed in on me, ready to inflict another round of pain and humiliation. The memories of their previous attacks still haunted me, leaving me paralyzed with fear.
Just when I thought there was no hope left, Avery came to my rescue like a guardian angel. She fiercely defended me against the bullies, standing up for me when I couldnât stand up for myself. At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and relief wash over me. Averyâs bravery and selflessness not only saved me from harm but also reminded me that kindness and courage still exist in this harsh world. Now, I am forever indebted to her and will strive to repay her kindness by being there for her when she needs someone to rely on.
Despite not possessing the ability to shift into a wolf, I am still bound by my werewolf instincts and loyalty. Even faced with Avery, the powerful and fearsome dragon queen, I cannot turn away from my duty to help her. The bond between a werewolf and their pack runs deep, transcending even the most formidable adversaries. My packâs honor dictates that I stand by Averyâs side in her time of need, for she may be royalty among dragons but I am a warrior among werewolves.
Though the odds may seem insurmountable, my unwavering determination will guide me through whatever challenges lie ahead as I fulfill my sworn oath to protect and aid Avery, regardless of her daunting status as a dragon queen. Avery is now my pack because I wonât go back to Nightshade. The girls who have always teased me are related to the outgoing Alpha and have hopes of securing mates who will run Nightshade one day.
âThank you for understanding. I apologize for interrupting your shopping, but Iâll be fine now,â I say, glancing away.
Avery interrupts, saying, âDonât apologize. Youâre coming with us.â
As I try to protest, Avery grabs my hand, her eyes glazed over before filling with determination. âYou canât go back.
Theyâre planning to banish you. Weâll help spread the word to your loyal followers,â she whispers urgently.
Iâm shocked. âYouâre not just a dragon queen.â
Avery smiles sweetly, âNo, my new wolfly friend, Iâm much more than that.â
Clint leads us into a store, his voice filled with excitement. âRory, we overheard everything they said, and things they only kept in their thoughts. They put me in mind of the bitches that once tried to kill Avery. I am a huge arrogant jackass, but I am a better jackass because of Avery. Let Avery help you, just like she helped me and my brothers. Now, go try on some clothes in that dressing room. Weâve got you covered!â
Clint and Avery generously showered me with clothing, making me feel like a true celebrity. To my surprise, they even managed to find luggage for me. Thanks to their kindness, I no longer felt the immediate pressure to return to Nightshade. However, I knew that eventually I would have to go back, and I couldnât possibly ask my new friends to accompany me.
The tension between packs was escalating, and the rules were strict â we were forbidden from interacting with anyone outside of our own pack, let alone being in the presence of dragons.
As we strolled a few blocks, I caught sight of their magnificent dragons. They were more breathtaking than any I had ever laid eyes on. The thought of touching, let alone riding, a dragon had never crossed my mind before. But now, the idea consumed me. I was determined to ride a dragon!

Soaring through the sky on the back of a majestic dragon, I couldnât help but yearn for a different form. No longer did I wish to be a wolf, constantly eluding me, nor did I desire to be human. At that moment, I longed to be a dragon myself.
As we touched down at the grand palace, my eyes widened in awe. A young woman, not much older than myself, dashed out followed by a group of disgruntled men.
Stepping forward, I positioned myself in front of Avery and Clint. âYou will not harm them or raise your voices. This is my doing. Punish me instead.â

Every time I am near to touching my mate, something comes up. This time there isnât a dragon uprising to worry about, but one in the other supernaturalsâ territories. Thereâs a squabble among vampires to the west, which I am saving to visit last because I suspect it will be resolved without the need for my skills. Being The King Of Kings grants me the final say in most matters. Though, I do try to avoid vampires and witches.

The disputes that disturb me are among shifters. Yes, packs will war with other packs. It is usually over a mate, territory, or both. These types of disputes can escalate into a war quickly, that then becomes a generation-long feud. I suspect that Cora might be involved in all of these sudden skirmishes, but I canât be certain. I didnât want to have Avery in my bed if the kingdom was under attack. Ty should have given her a permanent mark on her ankle or arm. It would have prevented me from losing touch with her until she chose me as her mate and we had a marking ceremony.
When it comes to Avery, it appears that nothing has followed tradition. I feel the pull to her even now as I am approaching the Nightshade pack. Alpha Warwick was once a reasonable man, but he has since grown bitter after his mate was killed by a rival pack. I allowed him his revenge, but I knew a change was needed. Thus, I implemented a rule stating that Alphas could only rule for a set period before declaring their successors, who would then fight in a tournament to determine the new Alpha.
For dragons, the situation is different. We have meticulously kept records of our bloodline as it has dwindled over time. However, I am confident that our bloodlines will soon flourish once my Queen returns home. Avery may have developed feelings for Cassius, Clint, and Conner, but she has a duty to all dragons that she must fulfill. Failure to do so could lead to our extinction.
Once I arrived at Alpha Warwickâs presence, I requested that he summon the girls back. They were all gazing at him with admiration and flashing flirtatious smiles which they abruptly turned toward me. âI heard there was an incident at the mall today. What transpired?â
Bethany, the alphaâs youngest cousin, spoke up, âWe encountered Rory there. That fleabag Omega with no resources. She is a whore and is always looking at our guys, so we put her in her place. We had her trembling and in tears until Avery, Nagaâs Queen, intervened. She made us bow and issued a warning. We may not engage in conflict with dragons, but this is a reason to consider it with her. She is no Queen!â
Well... well, Avery utilized her title and her dragonâs power without any training. I must say, I am impressed. I want to commend my mate, although it is not official yet. However, I can state, âBethany, if you believe that ruling means being the leader of mean girls, you will never attract an alpha.â I turned to Alpha Warwick, âI recommend introducing etiquette and history classes. It seems this generation could benefit from a refresher.â He agreed and used the mind-link to communicate my suggestion to the pack. Now, letâs move on to discussing pack matters over a fine-aged scotch.
