Chapter 131
âYou canât be alone here at night,â Brandon said. âWhoâs gonna look after you if I take off?â
They were back to square one with that question.
Sophia felt she wasnât so frail that she needed babysitting. Even if she did, hiring a nurse would do the trick, no need to keep someone on standby.
âAre you planning to stick around tonight?â Sophia asked, hesitating.
Brandon didnât nod or shake his head. âGot someone better in mind?â
He glanced at her phone. âOr maybe you want him to take care of you? Thatâs cool too, your call.â
âWell. Sophia pondered for a moment, âthen letâs have him come over, you go ahead with your stuff!â
Brandon was speechless.
He gave her a calm look. âAlright, once heâs here to take over, Iâll head out.â
Sophia fell silent.
She didnât actually dare to have Ivan stay and look after her; she just wanted to persuade Brandon to head out first.
But Brandon was never one to be easily sent away.â
Sophia wasnât sure if he saw through her bluff about not daring to have Ivan substitute or if he really wanted to wait for someone to come before he could leave with peace of mind. He stayed put, so she didnât press any further.
Once she finished taking her meds, Brandon pulled up a chair in front of the hospital bed and settled down to continue with his work.
He had rushed out at noon and hadnât brought his laptop, so he was working from his phone.
Sophia occasionally heard him answering calls, calmly organizing work.
She didnât sleep, and Brandon didnât deliberately avoid her.
It felt a bit like going back to their two years of married life..
Under the same roof, busy with their own things, not bothering each other.
Sophia was accustomed to this non-interference mode too. It made her feel more comfortable.
Ivan arrived over an hour later.
He didnât barge in but politely knocked on the door.
The knock broke the focus of the two inside.
Brandon glanced at Sophia and then told the staff member on the phone, âYou carry on with the current plan, I gotta hang up,â before cutting the call. He then got up to open the door.
When the door opened, Brandon saw Ivan standing at the entrance with a fruit basket.
Ivan hadnât expected someone else to be in the room. He paused, subtly sizing up Brandon, vaguely remembering him as the man he saw at Sophiaâs apartment two years ago.
While Ivan was taking him in, Brandon politely greeted, âHello.â
âHello,â Ivan responded with equal courtesy, his gaze shifting past Brandonâs shoulder to Sophia inside the room.
Sophia had sat up and greeted him with the same politeness, âIvan.â
Brandon stepped aside to let Ivan in. âCome on in.â
âThanks,â Ivan murmured his thanks as he entered. âEverything okay?â
âAll good. Just a bit of damage to the arm,â Sophia replied lightly, then turned to Brandon, âWell, Ivan is here now, and with him around, itâs all good. You can go and rest.â
Brandon gave her a look and then turned to Ivan with a calm and cool gaze that made Sophiaâs heart skip a beat and her breath catch.
Ivan glanced at Sophia thoughtfully, then back to Brandon.
âAlright,â Brandon said evenly, his voice as detached as his expression, âI wonât intrude any further then. Get some rest.â
After a polite nod to Ivan as a farewell, he left without looking back.
Sophia watched silently as the door to the hospital room closed. She didnât utter a word.
Ivan, with a contemplative glance at Sophia, didnât pry further but asked calmly, âI heard you turned down a resort project recently.â
His calm and gentle voice reached Brandon outside the door, who paused slightly as Sophiaâs soft voice followed from inside, âIâm considering it.
âI remember youâve been interested in Zenithan-style projects since college and this one offers a rare opportunity in terms of scale and impact. I think it would be a shame to let it go, Ivan advised calmly from inside.
Brandonâs expression cooled again, and without lingering, he walked away without a trace of emotion.
Inside the room, facing Ivanâs persuasion, Sophia just smiled politely, âYeah, Iâll think it over.â
She then steered the conversation back to what they had been discussing earlier, a bit awkwardly, âIvan, donât get the wrong idea about eartier. My friend has been with me all day, busy as a bee and hasnât had a momentâs rest. Heâs swamped with work, but he was worried about leaving me alone, so I only
said you were coming to give him a break. Hope you donât mind.â
Ivan nodded, looking at her, âArenât your folks coming to keep you company?â
âTheyâre on their way, Sophia said. âThey had a lot to do this afternoon, so I didnât notify them until just now. It takes a while to get here.â
Ivan wasnât familiar with Sophiaâs family situation, but seeing her at ease, he just nodded and didnât delve deeper.
He had come to Sophia today at Donâs request to persuade her to stay. Both from Donâs perspective and for Sophiaâs own good, he hoped she would take on the Zenithan-style resort project-it was too good an opportunity to miss.
In his view, giving up a future for love was the dumbest thing one could do.
He didnât say it outright, but his attempts to convince Sophia already hinted at that sentiment.
Sophia had a hunch that it was Don who had asked him to come and talk to her.
She hadnât gone into details about the project with Susan, and since Susan didnât support her staying at Star-Dempsey Architects, so it could only be Don
who ask Ivan here.
âIâll make a careful decision. Thanks, Ivan,â Sophia whispered her thanks.
Ivan also smiled, âNo worries.â
âWe just donât want you to have any regrets,â Ivan added with a smile. âOf course, Don and I have our own selfish reasons. This project is the companyâs first in the country, and weâre both hoping for a strong start.â
âI hope the company keeps getting better too,â Sophia said with a smile, leaving her options open.
Ivan gave a nod and glanced at his watch. âAlright, Iâm gonna head back then. Wonât keep you from your beauty sleep.â
âThanks for the hard work, Ivan,â Sophia said, standing up to see him off.
Ivan took a quick look towards the door. âOh, by the way, when are your folks getting here?â
âTheyâre already downstairs, will be up in a jiffy. No need to worry about me,â Sophia spoke softly. âYou go on ahead, theyâll be here any minute.
Ivan nodded, âAlright, make sure you hit the hay early too.â
âYep, you too, get some rest.â
Sophia smiled her goodbye, watching Ivan head out before her smile faded and she shut the door to the hospital room.
The place went quiet in an instant, eerily so.
This was Sophiaâs first time being in the hospital alone.
She wasnât exactly used to it, especially feeling under the weather as she was.
The pain in her arm was one thing, but the head-spinning dizziness was the real kicker.
Even something as simple as drinking water, taking meds, or using the bathroom felt like a Herculean task.
Having Ivan around was a bit of a distraction from the discomfort, but now that she was solo, it hit her full force.
Sophia didnât play the martyr â she hit the nurse call button by the bed without hesitation.
A nurse arrived promptly.
âDo you guys have any caregivers available?â Sophia asked.
âNot at this hour,â the nurse replied. âYou usually have to book them in advance or during the day, theyâre all gone by now. You could try asking again
tomorrow.â
âOkay, thanks.â
Sophia murmured her thanks, not too bummed out as sheâd expected this. Just meant tonight might be a bit rough, thatâs all. Over at the Starlight Group, in Brandonâs office, heâs all propped up by one hand, staring off into space at his computer screen.
Having eyed Brandon for a good while, Don tugged gently at Kentâs sleeve and whispered, âWhatâs up with your boss again?â Heâd been there for quite some time and Brandon had been zoning out just as long.
