Chapter 15

Sharkgator1,466 words~8 min read

The night has passed and now it was the next day. It was getting hopeless. We were at this place for five days now and we still was out of luck. I had no idea when we were going to be rescued and I was getting more and more scared and frustrated. We've tried everything and with us being here each passing day, the chances of our survival was slim to none.

I wanted this nightmare to be over. I wanted the sharkgator to go back to where it came from and leave us alone. I want to go back to my life, instead of continuing to live in terror; fear of what's going to happen next. Fear of having no control. It felt like time was moving in slow motion and all I can think about is being back at home. Safe from this place and what's inside of it. But that was just hope and you know what they say about hope.

My attention was brought back to reality, when Anna sighed. "I'm hungry." She said. We were all sitting in the living room contemplating our next move.

"Me too." Tamika put in.

"Well, there is a endless supply of meat in the refrigerator. You can cook it since I doubt the sharkgator is going to need it anymore, considering that he is more interested in our meat." Patrice said sardonically. "I don't understand why someone would want to eat in a time like this anyway."

Anna gave her a look. "Patrice, would you stop?"

Patrice sat up on the couch she was on and spread her hands wide. "Why should I? We all know it's the truth. So go ahead, Anna, pick a meat and knock yourself out!"

"For once in your life, Patrice, don't be a bitch." Anna responded in a surprisingly calm voice.

We all turned our attention to Anna and Patrice in shock. We were especially shock about what Anna said. No one expected her to say that, because she was a quiet and humble person. She doesn't let anything bother her.

Patrice inclined her head and stared hard at Anna. "What did you just called me?" She asked, her voice raising an octave higher with each word. "If I were you--!"

"Guys! Guys!" I said cutting into the argument before it got out of hand. "We're all scared and frustrated, but attacking each other won't get us anywhere."

"Yes, we should all use our energy in figuring out how to get out of here." Mr. Ragland put in.

Patrice crossed her arms over her chest and sat back in the couch, mumbling something to herself. Anna nodded her head in agreement, before resting her head on Lance's shoulder, who sat beside her.

The room fell silent again, until I heard a whirling noise outside. At first I thought my mind was playing tricks on me and it was just the wind, but then I heard it again. I lift my head in the direction of the noise, trying to figure out what it was. The sound was getting closer and closer and seemed to be coming from over us.

"Do you guys hear that?" Kate asked looking at us.

"Yeah," I said as the noise came closer.

"What is it?" Tamika asked.

"It sounds like an helicopter." Brian said, getting up off the couch as the words leave his mouth.

Anna lifted her head off Lance's shoulder. "An helicopter? Really?" Her eyes were hopeful. She then got up off the couch and followed Brian who was making his way to the door. We all followed behind as well.

When Brian reached the door, he opened it and peeked out to see if the sharkgator was anywhere in sight. The whirling sound of the helicopter was much louder now as it passed over the cabin. Satisfied with not seeing the sharkgator anywhere, he stepped out onto the porch. We all stepped out behind him, shielding our eyes from the sun as we looked up into the sky.

"He's going away!" Anna said frantically, looking at us with wide eyes. "Whoever is in there is going away! He doesn't know we are here!"

As soon as she said that she took off down the porch steps and ran from the cabin, waving her hands frantically. "Hey!" She screamed as loud as she could. "We're down here!" She continued to scream and wave her hands, while jumping up and down.

"Anna, don't do that. Please come back here!" I shouted at her.

Ignoring my warning, Anna continued to shout. "We're down here!"

"Anna, come on. Come back!" Tamika shouted at Anna too. It was obvious that she was worried, as she was wringing her fingers in front of her. "You know it's not safe!"

"Anna, please." Lance added as he stepped forward. There was something about the way he sounded that caused me to look up at him. There was an unknown emotion in his eyes and his face was contorted in pain.

I didn't have time to analyze it as I heard the sound of the helicopter close again. I looked up to see that it has turned and was coming back in our direction. Yes, Thank God! He saw us! I thought to myself in relief.

However, my relief was short lived as a movement at the corners of my eye caught my attention. I followed the direction of the movement and saw that it was the sharkgator, standing a few distance behind Anna. It was partially hidden behind a few trees.

"Oh God," I whispered under my breath. Everyone turned their attention to me, before following my line of sight and saw the sharkgator too. I started to shout again, more urgently this time. "Anna, it's here! Look behind you!"

I watched Anna as she froze at my words. Taking her attention from the returning helicopter, she turned around slowly. She saw the sharkgator and she stood frozen in fear.

"Run Anna, run!" Tamika shouted beside me.

At Tamika's shout, Anna snapped out of her temporary state of shock and began running back to the porch. The sharkgator moved away from its hiding spot and began to chase her. Its movements were fast and quick and I watched in horror as Anna tripped on her own feet and fell.

My heart was lodged in my throat as I watched Anna got back up and began running again. Her eyes were filled with tears and she was screaming as she run. The sharkgator was close to her now, because she had lost a lot of time when she had fell.

She was near to the cabin now, when Mr. Ragland shouted, "Everyone inside the cabin now!" We all obeyed and turned to head inside so that Anna can get in easily.

I was the last person to go through the door, when I heard Anna cry out. I turned around instantly to see Anna on the ground and she was digging her nails into the board of the porch. I looked down towards her feet to see that the shakgator was pulling her by her foot. I figured that she had made it to the first step, when the sharkgator snatched her foot and knocked her off her feet.

I run towards Anna and grabbed her hands. "Hang on!" I shouted. Just then Lance came beside me and grabbed onto Anna's hand as well and helped me to pull her forward. This task was seeming to be impossible as the sharkgator was too strong. The others walked over to us to help as well, but before they could grab a hold of Anna, the sharkgator gave one last pull and Anna's hands slipped from our grasp. The force of the pull cause Lance and I to fall back onto our bottom. Before we could grab Anna's hand again, the sharkgator dragged her away.

"No! Help me!" Anna screamed as the sharkgator continued to pull her. "Please, I don't want to die! I don't want to die! Please!"

Lance got up off the ground, making to go after her. I put my hands on his shoulder to stop him. "No, Lance, it is useless. There is nothing more we can do."

"No! I'm not letting her go so easily." He shrugged my hands from his shoulders and continued down the steps and then run after Anna.
