An irritating buzzing sound intruded. A moan followed, deep and snarling, before the bed shifted and shook. I let myself drift, falling back toward the blissful darkness until Nick mumbled. âYeah?â
I fellâ¦
Plunging back into a dream, one where I was sucked into a void I couldnât get out of, no matter how hard I foughtâuntil a name snapped me back.
âElleâ¦she called you?â
I jerked my eyes open, forcing myself back into my body. The bed shifted again, and this time Tobias muttered. âWhat is it?â
Our room came into focus, sharpening at the edges, drawing me away from sleep. I rolled, then pushed myself upwards, and found Nick sitting on the edge of the bed.
âOf course she wants protection. Itâs not like sheâs ever fucking shown she cares about Ryth.â
I flinched at the words. My pulse raced, tearing me further and further away from sleep.
âWe want to talk to her.â Nick pushed up from the bed.
Caleb rolled over, shoved upwards, and slipped out the other side as Tobias followed Nick, leaving me all alone with the sheets sliding from my body.
âWhat is it?â Tobias growled, his voice husky.
âWhere? The Pier. How long until they get there?â
The Pier? Why was mom going there?
âYou want us to head there?â Nick turned away, shielding his face from me, not that I could see anything in the dark. Still, it hurt, the tiny pang of rejection raw and real.
I knew it was because of Mom, and fought the need to touch my cheek.
âOkay, well, weâll just wait for them. Youâll call the moment you hearâ¦yeahâ¦yeah, sheâs okay. I get it. Sure.â
He lowered his hand and I was riveted by the movement. No one spokeâ¦not for ages, until Tobias broke the tension. âWhat is it?â
Nick turned, his focus aimed at me. âRythâs mom reached out to Ben, apparently sheâs in fear for her life and needs protection.â
âOf course she did,â T snarled.
I swallowed hard, hating how I was caught on every word. âDid sheâ¦did she ask to see me?â
Silence.
Silence that spoke louder than words ever could.
I turned away.
âPrincess.â Nick started.
âItâs okay.â I pushed the sheets away. âI donât know why I expected anything different.â
âMaybe sheâs just scared right now,â Caleb offered. âOnce sheâs safe, she might want to reach out.â
The memory of her palm burned on my cheek. I knew the truth. âI donât think so.â
âEven if she doesnât want to see us, we sure as hell want to see her,â Tobias snapped. âAnd I donât give a fuck if she doesnât. We want answers.â He was riled, pacing the floor at the foot of the bed. âWe want to know what the fuck sheâs hiding and why sheâd send her own daughter to that fucking place and leave her thereâ¦but mostlyâ¦we want an explanation of whatâs in that goddamn diary.â
âDiary?â I whispered, looking from Tobias to Nick as he flinched.
âT,â Nick snarled softly. âYou fucking idiot.â
âWhat diary?â I asked again.
âShit.â Tobias turned away.
But I was already striding toward them, naked and growing cold. âWhat fucking diary, Tobias?â
âPrincess.â Caleb reached out for me.
But I stepped out of his reach as Nick flicked the bedroom light on and turned to me. All I saw was guilt.
âWhat she writes doesnât make a whole lot of sense,â he started. âThereâs some things in there that are pretty fucked upâ¦things I donât think you should read.â
I didnât care what he thought. I needed to know. âDo you have the diary?â
âLittle mouse,â T protested.
I snapped my glare his way. âYou fucking lied to me. At best, you hid the truth. You were the one demanding honesty, and now I find out youâve readâ¦this diary. So, Iâm going to ask you again, and so help me God, if you tell me a goddamn lie, Iâll kick you right in the balls.â
He didnât flinch at the threat.
But his stare grew darker. âI donât wantââ
âI donât give a fuck, T. Answer the question. Doâ¦youâ¦haveâ¦theâ¦diary?â
But it was Nick who answered, Nick whose shoulders sagged as he nodded. âYes.â
âI want to read it.â
I waited for him to fight me. He didnât. Instead, he reached down, grasped his boxers, and tugged them on. âThen youâre going to want to get dressed,â he muttered. âBecause I guarantee, once you start thereâll be no more sleep.â
A tremble raced through me as he reached for his jeans.
Then I followed.
