Namtan's eyes welled with tears, blurring her vision as she stared at the bar exam results on her laptop screen. Sadness and disappointment churned inside her, heavy and suffocating. She had checked the list multiple times, scrolling back and forth through the sections for names beginning with "N" and "T," hoping she had somehow missed her own. But no matter how many times she checked, her name wasn't there.
She lay back down in bed, clutching her pillow tightly. The result had come out barely ten minutes ago, and already, the weight of failure was pressing down on her chest. She had dreaded this moment, waiting anxiously for days, and now that it had arrived, it felt even worse than she had imagined. She couldn't stop the silent tears from falling, her heart breaking with each one.
The loud ring of her phone startled her, breaking the silence in her dimly lit room. She glanced at the screenâa video call from her group chat with Faye and Sonya. Faye was currently in Thailand, and Sonya was probably at home since it was still so early in the morning. Namtan hesitated, debating whether to answer. She knew exactly why they were callingâthey must have seen the results by now, and they probably wanted to console her, to offer their sympathy.
I don't need their pity, she thought. But deep down, she knew she couldn't avoid them forever. They had been there for her throughout her entire bar exam journeyâencouraging her, helping her stay on track when she wanted to give up. With a reluctant sigh, she wiped her tears and accepted the call.
As the video connected, she was surprised to see both Faye and Sonya grinning from ear to ear.
"Congratulations!" they shouted in unison, their voices bright and full of excitement.
Namtan blinked in confusion, her heart sinking further. Why are they congratulating me? She frowned. "What are you congratulating me for?" she asked, her voice a mix of irritation and sadness.
Sonya's brow furrowed, her grin faltering slightly. "The bar exam, you idiot! Haven't you seen the result yet?"
Namtan's confusion deepened. "I've seen it," she said, irritation creeping into her tone. "And I didn't pass. I've checked it multiple times! My name's not on the list. What are you talking about?"
Faye exchanged a bewildered glance with Sonya before asking calmly, "Are we looking at the same bar exam result?"
"Yes! It was just released ten minutes ago. I've already gone through the list past the letters N and T multiple times, and my name isn't there!" Namtan snapped, her frustration spilling over. She took a deep breath and said, "Sorry. I didn't mean to lash out. I just can't deal with jokes right now and I'm truly sorry that I failed you." Her voice softened, revealing her sadness.
For a moment, there was silence. Then, Sonya burst out laughing, much to Namtan's irritation. "I told you!" Sonya said, turning to Faye. "I can't believe she actually topped the bar and still managed to be this clueless."
"Wait, what?" Namtan's eyes widened in shock, her heart skipping a beat. "What did you just say?"
Faye chuckled, but she spoke gently. "Namtan, check the topnotchers' list. You're looking in the wrong place."
Namtan's heart started pounding in her chest. With trembling hands, she grabbed her laptop and refreshed the page. Her eyes darted to the very top of the screen, where the names of the top ten examinees were displayed. And there it was, right at the top of the listâher name.
Her breath caught in her throat. She stared at the screen, blinking rapidly as if trying to convince herself she wasn't imagining things. "I... I topped the bar?" she whispered, disbelief evident in her voice.
Sonya laughed even harder. "Yes, you dumbass! Number one, top of the list, highest score in the whole country! And here you were crying, thinking you failed."
Namtan was speechless. Her mind whirled as she tried to process the information. She had spent the past ten minutes drowning in disappointment, convinced she had failed, only to find out she had not only passed but excelled beyond her wildest dreams.
"I... I don't know what to say," she stammered, still in shock. Her tears, which had previously been born of sadness, now overflowed with overwhelming joy and relief. "I really... I thought I didn't make it."
"Well, believe it!" Sonya said, grinning broadly. "And maybe next time, read the whole page before you start crying like the world ended."
Faye smiled warmly, her eyes full of pride. "We're so proud of you, Namtan. You've worked so hard for this, and you deserve every bit of it."
Namtan wiped her tears, a shaky laugh escaping through her sniffles. "No... thank you both. I wouldn't have made it without you. If you hadn't found me in that restaurantâif you hadn't walked in, looking like angels sent straight from heavenâI don't know where I'd be. You're both my saviors. Thank you so much. I love you guys."
Faye's eyes softened as she listened, her voice a little shaky too. "You are most welcome, but thank yourself too because youâyou're the one who found your strength. You fought so hard, and that's what got you here."
Sonya leaned in closer to the screen, her face serious but filled with warmth. "She's right, you know. We helped, sure, but you did all the work. You've always had the power to turn things around, Namtan. We just gave you a little push."
Namtan smiled, the tears still falling but no longer out of sadness. "I don't know... I just feel like without you two, I would've never had the courage to move forward. You were my lifeline when everything felt dark."
Faye gave a soft chuckle. "Well, I think we all saved each other in some way, huh?"
Sonya nodded, her smile tender. "Exactly. And we're always going to be here for you, no matter what. You don't have to go through anything alone anymore."
Namtan wiped her face, a genuine smile breaking through. "I know... and that's the best gift you could ever give me. I love you both so much."
Faye and Sonya shared a look, their eyes locking in a shared understanding of how far Namtan had come. "We love you too, Namtan," Sonya said softly. "We always will."
"I can't believe I thought I failed" Namtan said again, shaking her head in disbelief. "Thank you... for calling. I really needed this."
"Idiot," Sonya teased affectionately. "But you're our idiot, and now you're officially a lawyerâwell, once you take the oath."
Namtan laughed, her heart feeling lighter than it had in weeks. For the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to feel proudânot just of the result, but of everything she had gone through to get here.
Before the call ended, Faye informed Namtan that she and Yoko would be flying back soon because her mom was already planning a celebration for Namtan's achievement in topping the bar exam. Although Namtan tried to tell Faye it wasn't necessary, Faye just laughed and said, "Have you met my mom?"
Namtan couldn't help but laugh along. Dr. Malisorn loved hosting partiesâreal celebrations filled with warmth, laughter, and joy. Not the stiff, formal kind, but lively gatherings that made everyone feel special. And deep down, Namtan knew how much Faye's parents cared about her. They had always treated her like one of their own, so this wasn't just a partyâit was a chance to express gratitude to the people who had stood by her. She decided she wouldn't take that moment away from them or herself.
Still sitting in bed, she stared at her name on the screen one more time. She had done it. She had really done it.
With a soft smile and teary eyes, she clasped her hands together and whispered a quiet prayer. "Mom, Grandma... I hope you're proud of me too. I've done it. I'm sad I can't share this win with you, but don't worry about me anymore. I found a family tooâa family that loves and supports me." Her voice broke as sobs escaped her, but they were tears of both joy and longing.
In that moment, Namtan allowed herself to cry freelyâtears of happiness for what she had achieved, and tears of longing for the family she wished could have been there to celebrate with her. It was a bittersweet victory, but one she knew they were watching over, proud of how far she had come.

The evening was bathed in soft golden light as Namtan stepped into the vibrant scene unfolding in Faye's family's home. Dr. Malisorn had outdone herself, transforming the spacious living room into a celebration worthy of a lifetime's achievement. String lights hung above, their twinkling glow filling the room with warmth, while a long table was laden with a feast of colorful dishesâtraditional Thai favorites and some more contemporary delights, a blend of flavors as rich as the people who had gathered to honor Namtan.
Guests milled about, some laughing, others exchanging heartfelt congratulations. The air was thick with excitement, but also with love and pride, a tangible force that wrapped around Namtan like a comforting embrace. As she walked further into the room, Faye caught her eye and waved enthusiastically, her grin wide, the same grin Namtan had seen countless times that always made her feel like she was home.
"You're here!" Faye beamed, pulling Namtan into a tight hug. "Are you ready for the world to see how amazing you are?"
Namtan felt a mixture of awe and disbelief. There was no way she could have made it here without the people who had helped her along the wayâthe people who believed in her even when she had doubts about herself. The love that surrounded her felt like an invisible force that had carried her through.
As they pulled apart, Dr. Malisorn appeared, her eyes twinkling with pride. "There she is, the woman of the hour," she said, her voice thick with emotion. She took Namtan's hands in hers, squeezing them warmly. "You did it, my dear. You've made us all so proud."
Faye's Dad, standing beside them, added in a voice, softer but equally sincere, "You've always been family, Namtan. Today, we celebrate youâfor everything you've accomplished and everything you are."
Namtan smiled, feeling her heart swell. Her throat tightened with emotion, but she managed to hold back the tears. "I couldn't have done it without all of you. You've supported me in ways I never imagined, and now... I can't even express how grateful I am."
The evening went on with laughter and joy echoing through the house. Namtan shared stories with friends and family, her voice growing more animated as they reminisced about the journey that had brought her here. There were toasts made in her honor, and even a few jokes about her 'serious lawyer look'âwhich, of course, she couldn't help but laugh at.
At one point, Dr. Malisorn stood up, tapping her glass to gain everyone's attention. The room fell silent, and all eyes turned toward her.
"I just want to say," Dr. Malisorn began, her voice warm but full of authority, "that today isn't just about Namtan passing the bar. It's about the woman she's becomeâthe woman who worked tirelessly, who didn't let her past define her, and who fought for her future. We've watched her grow, and we couldn't be prouder of what she's achieved. Namtan, this is only the beginning. The world better watch out for you."
Everyone raised their glasses, and the room filled with applause and cheers. Namtan's heart skipped a beat, and she felt the weight of all the love and pride flooding her chest.
Later, as the night wore on and the party began to wind down, Namtan found herself standing near the window, looking out at the garden filled with fairy lights. She had always been so focused on the future, on surviving each day, but nowâstanding here in this momentâshe could finally see it. The future was something worth reaching for. Something that could be hers, thanks to the people who had helped her believe in herself.
Faye appeared beside her, offering her a glass of wine. "You okay?" she asked, her voice quiet, understanding.
Namtan turned to face her, offering a smile full of gratitude. "Yeah... just taking it all in," she said softly. "I never thought I'd be here, with so much love, so much... happiness. I feel like I finally have a place where I belong."
Faye nodded, her gaze warm. "You've always had a place here, Namtan. You belong with usâalways have, always will."
As the final notes of music played in the background, Namtan couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of peace. This was it. The beginning of a new chapter. And it was a chapter she would write with the people she loved, surrounded by a future that no longer seemed so distant, but within her reach.
The celebration continued long into the night, filled with laughter, dancing, and moments of quiet joy. For Namtan, it was more than just a celebration of passing the bar examâit was a celebration of her life, of the people who had stood by her, and of the future she was ready to embrace.
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
Hey babes,
I'm writing this note while waiting for my flight, and I have some sad news: this might be the last update for the week. I'll be super busy in the coming weeks and won't be in the country for the last two weeks. Thankfully, I have my "working" MacBook with me, but I won't have time to proofread or edit, so that will have to wait until I return. I'm truly sorry, everyone.
I can't ask you to wait for me, but for those who do, thank you so much. As I've mentioned before, this is just a passion for me, and my real life is getting busier every day. When I get back, I hope to have finished a second book for Faye Yoko, as well as Lookmhee and Sonya's story. I'm also considering whether to focus on Grace and Oaey first because I absolutely love the ending of the "Mate" series, and I'm really invested in Grace. ð
There's a lot in my drafts, and it feels overwhelming, but I'm inspired to finish them all. I still have FreenBecky, LingOrm, and Engfa to wrap up, and I'm looking forward to completing them.
Again, I'll miss you all, and thank you for your love and support. Remember to choose kindness every day! ðð
