ARIEL
My motorcycle roars through town, but Iâm having a hard time enjoying the feeling of the wind through my hair when I remember the car Iâm escorting.
Lola peers out of the tinted windows of the back seat of the black SUV.
Mariaâs invitation for her to stay for the week had been an impromptu decision and now, the following morning, here I am, escorting her going shopping.
Fate is a fickle bitch.
I keep running the conversation I had with Lola last night through my head.
I initially thought she was nothing more than an annoyance. Something chalked up to bad timing.
But after hearing the ferocity in her voice, the threat of badmouthing me to Alex... I see that thereâs something much more sinister going on with her.
I know one thing for sureâshe doesnât care about Alex.
As we come to a stop at a strip of clothing and accessory stores, I swing my leg over my bike and follow her into the nearest high-end clothing boutique.
I sit near the entrance, arms crossed while she tries on a monthâs worth of dresses and shoes.
Iâm relieved when I see that sheâs purchasing a good fifteen outfits.
~At least we only had to hit up one store.~
I stand to help carry some of the bags to the car when I see her hand the credit card to the cashier.
With Alexâs name on it.
~What the hellâs wrong with her credit card? Sheâs royalty, too, right?~
âWhat did you say your title is?â I ask, attempting to sound nonchalant.
Lolaâs eyes narrow. âWhy?â
âIâve never met much royalty before. I donât know how all the titles and lineage work. Just wondering.â
âMy grandfather is the third born of an alpha line king.â
âSo that makes youâ¦?â
âAn alpha line princess. Whatâs with the third degree?â
âIâm just wondering why your pack allowed you to stay gone for so long. Without sending your own royal guard.â
âI donât like to make a big deal out of my station,â she said quickly. âAre you done?â
I shrugged. âSorry, just making conversation.â
As I walk the curvaceous blonde out of the store, I canât help but succumb to the feeling of dread I had the night before.
~Somethingâs not right here.~
Throwing the bags into the trunk, Lola chides me for being so rough with them. I roll my eyes and get ready to hop back on my bike.
âWhere are you going?â she asks.
âBack to the palace,â I respond.
âIâm not done shopping yet!â she says, slamming the trunk.
âYou donât think you got enough to last you the week already?â I quip.
âIâm planning on staying a lot longer than that.â She walks toward a jewelry store.
âGuard,â she calls over her shoulder at me. âYou coming? Or do I need to tell Alex you arenât doing your job?â

Three hours and about two thousand dollars racked up on Alexâs credit card later, Lola has decided that she has enough shit to now head back to the palace.
As Iâm about to finally get back on my bike, I catch a familiar rogue scent.
I look over to see that Lola is not yet in the car and is instead texting on her phone, completely oblivious to the smell.
âLola, get in the car, now,â I say, walking over to her.
âExcuse me?â she says snottily. âWhoâs working for whom here?â
I dart my eyes around the perimeter. I donât see anything yet, but the rogue scent is becoming more prominent.
âI donât have time to argue with you,â I say, grasping her shoulders to try to move her faster. âJust get in the car! Donât you smell that?â
âI donât smell anything. Get your hands offââ
She is immediately cut off as a rogue lunges over the hood of the car toward us.
âShit! Get down!â I tackle Lola to the ground to make her take cover before I launch into a defensive stance against the rogue.
I throw a solid punch to the rogueâs mangy jaw, knocking him down long enough to give me time to shift.
Throwing off my leather jacket, I let my wolf out, shifting as quickly as possible while Lola screams obnoxiously from the ground.
Now fully in wolf form, I stand ready to fight.
The rogue gets back up to his feet.
He immediately lurches straight for my throat, but I easily dodge him and take a bite out of his shoulder, causing a yelp to escape his mouth.
This rogue is big, but heâs clumsy, and I have speed on my side.
He tries to go for my ribs, but I quickly dart out of his reach, and, once again, he just bites at the air.
I dart around to flank him and, in seconds, I take his hind legs out from under him.
He writhes and gnashes his teeth underneath me, but Iâve got him pinned.
I know that given my size, I canât keep him down for long. Wasting no time, I grip onto his throat, but I hesitate.
~I wonât kill again. Not if it affects my healing abilities.~
As I pause, the rogue throws me off of him and I land with a thud on the ground.
When I hop back up on all fours, the rogue flees. The driver has gotten out of the car at this point and is comforting Lola, whoâs bawling on the ground.
Looking at all of the shocked faces around me, it dawns on me that, while there are dozens of people out and about, not a single other person was hurt.
There was just one rogue and he came straight for us.
Taking cover behind the car for privacy, I shift back and pull my clothes on.

Lolaâs crying, playing up the damsel in distress routine when I walk over to her, still sitting on the pavement, head in her hands.
âAre you alright?â I ask.
âNo, Iâm not alright!â She looks up at me, eyes blazing. âYou pushed me!â She lifts her elbow to show me a rip in her sweater. âAnd I could have been killed!â
At this moment I notice something strange when I look into her purple eyes. One looksâ¦brown.
âAre you...did you lose a contact?â I ask.
âWhat? What are you talking about?â she spits at me.
âYour eyesâ¦theyâre two different colors.â
Lola immediately covers her left eye. âDonât be stupid! IâI need the bathroom. Toâ¦clean up.â Flustered, she disappears inside the nearest coffee shop.
~Is she intentionally trying to make herself look like Alexâs dead mate?~

As we arrive back at the palace, weâre met in front by Alex. I climb off my bike to tell him how things went down, but Iâm beaten to it by Lola, who runs into his arms.
âAlex! It was so horrible! I thought I was going to die!â
He hugs her hard and catches my eye over her shoulder.
âWas anyone hurt?â he asks me. I begin to shake my head when Lola interjects.
âJust when Ariel pushed me,â she said, showing him the rip in her sleeve. âI thought I scented something but she wouldnât listen to me!â
âIâthatâs notââ I begin, but Alex is shooting daggers at me with his eyes.
âDidnât you scent anything before it happened?â he asks, Lola still in his arms.
âOh my Goddess, Alex,ââshe makes him look at herââI was so scared I would never see you again!
âAll I could think about was getting out of there to see you. Thatâs all that was keeping me going!â
~This two-faced bitch!~
âYouâre okay,â he says, rubbing his hands over her back.â
âAriel didnât do a thing to protect me! She didnât get me to safety when I caught the rogue scent. Just kept saying I was overreacting.â
She turns to me. âI hope youâre happy!â she yells, then buries her face back in Alexâs chest.â
~Oh my Goddess, Alex has GOT to see through this!~
âAriel,â Alex says sternly, âwhy the hell didnât you get her to safety as soon asââ
âI tried!â I interrupt. âShe wouldnât listen to me!â
âYou obviously didnât try that hard!â he retorts, his voice rising.â
âI knew you werenât exactly happy to have gotten guard duty,â he goes on, âbut come on, Ariel! Lola could have been killed!â
âI donât want her to guard me anymore, Alex,â Lola pipes in. âPlease! Keeping me safe is the last thing on her mind!â
~Well, NOW it is!~
âThatâs fine,â he says. âAriel, justâ¦report back to General Dave. Youâre back on perimeter watch.â
âI didnâtâshe ââ I throw my hands up in frustration.â
Thereâs no talking to him with her around.
She knows exactly what sheâs doing and sheâs beginning by driving a wedge between Alex and me.
I know two things right now.
One: sheâs using Alex, but I canât figure out why.
Two: Iâm going to get to the bottom of it.
Lola slinks her head back around to look in my direction. She gives me a sly smile, her âpurpleâ eyes dancing with mischief.
I canât wait to knock that evil smirk off her face.
