ARIEL
Breakfast is a quiet event this morning.
Not even Xaviâs squeals bring a smile to my dadâs face.
Alex wraps an arm around my chair when he sees me staring at my dad with an expression of worry on my face.
âWhatâs bothering you, love?â Alex leans in close to whisper in my ear.
I tilt my head and rest it on his shoulder. âI wish I knew how to help him... I feel so useless.â
He brushes a kiss onto my temple and it settles me slightly. âJust be there for him. Thatâs all you can do until he asks for help.â
Dad clears his throat, and we all turn to him. âAlex, thank you so much for allowing me to stay here for as long as I have, but I think itâs time for me to return to the Crescent Moon Pack. Blakeâs been asking when I'm coming back.â
âNo, Dad. Why would you want to go back?â Natalia says, breaking the shocked silence. âYou could stay here with us! Right, Alex?â
âYouâre always welcome here, Peter,â Alex assures him.
âThatâs very kind of you,â Dad says. âBut I have responsibilities to Crescent Moon that I've been neglecting for far too long.â
âThen Iâm going to take you there,â I say. âI should have checked on them sooner, after everything that happened with Xavier...â
âIâll come too,â Natalia chirps. âXavi hasnât seen his other grandparents in too long.â
âThatâs sweet, girls, but...â
âNo buts, Dad! We want to be there for you,â I tell him, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand.
Dad looks between me and Natalia.
âRoad trip with my two girlsâ¦How could I say no to that?â

Alex watches me from our bed as I finish packing a bag for the weekend trip to the Crescent Moon Pack
I doubt weâll be there for too long before Dad realises that being back âhomeâ is a mistake. ~Surrounded by all of Dianneâs things at the houseâ¦~
~And all the memories...~
âIâve arranged the Pack warriors that will escort you to the Crescent Moon Pack,â Alex says. âI think five should be sufficient since youâre not heading into enemy territory...â
âWarrior escort?â I interrupt Alex. âWhat on Earth are you talking about?â
âYouâll be off pack land, Ariel,â Alex says.
âIâm a warrior and the General, Alex,â I remind him. âWhat kind of General needs a warrior escort? Iâm not some weak wolf that needs someone else to watch her back. And when we get to Crescent Moon, my old squad will be there.â
âYou are also my mate and Queen. Tradition dictates that the Queen should have a warrior escort when not on our territory...â
âTradition my ass!â I say. âItâs unnecessary and basically an insult!â
Alex steps closer and places his hands on my shoulders.
âAriel, I love you and I know that youâre a total badass, but I will not change my mind on this,â he says. âYou are going to the pack that exiled you. I am not risking your safety after everything weâve been through, love. Please do not fight me on this.â
âThree. Iâll take three warriors with me and no more,â I concede.
He nods in agreement.
Alex is right.
We canât be 100% sure what is going on at the Crescent Moon Pack, nor what the reception will be like when I show up with my dad.
~Just when I thought things were going to be simpler...~

JO
âAre you sure youâre gonna be fine with me away for the time being?â I ask Viv again.
Viv rolls her eyes. âYes, dear, for the hundredth timeâ¦I have made it this far in life and will do my best to not crumble to ash while you are away.â
â~Please~ donât turn into ash while Iâm away. You know I hate cleaning.â
âYes, I am well aware of your dislike of anything clean,â Vivianne says, sweeping her hands over the pile of dirty training gear I still havenât washed.
âWell, you love me anyway.â
She folds the last of my shirts and packs it into the bag on our bed.
~Our bed.~
I still have a hard time believing that I finally found my mate.
And not just any mateâ¦
A half-werewolf.
Even though Viv canât fully shift into a wolf, it has had no impact on our bond.
âGoddess only knows why,â she teases. âDo you have any idea on how long youâll be gone for? Will you come back with Ariel or stay out there to help the Crescents?â
âAlex said Iâm just part of Arielâs escort.â
âIâm glad you wonât be stationed away,â she says with a sigh of relief.
I wrap my arms around her waist.
âI thought you said you wouldnât âcrumble to ashâ while Iâm gone.â
âThat doesnât mean I wonât miss you like crazy,â she admits.
âIâll miss you too, Viv.â
