Volume 11 - Yamata no Orochi: Chapter 23 â Trap within a Trap
âItâs you⦠Momijiâ¦â Lilyâs voice was strained, her half-lidded eyes and furrowed brow betraying her anger. Shimizu appeared silently, like a shadow, pressing her blade menacingly against Momijiâs throat. âLily, should I kill her?â
âEhh, have we met before?â Shimizuâs strength far surpassed Momijiâs, but Momijiâs confidence suggested she had a fallback. âIf you kill me, then your cute little sister will be in trouble.â
âWhat?â Shimizuâs voice was edged with surprise.
âLily, howâs your condition?â Ayakaâs voice conveyed deep concern as she extended her senses to assess Lily. Though Lilyâs life force seemed stronger than ever, there was something about her aura that made Ayaka uneasy. Adding to her worry, Lily was emitting an unusual, fragrant crystalline mist. Despite suspecting that Lily might be alright, Ayaka couldnât shake off her apprehension.
âLily, please respondâ¦â Ayakaâs words were laced with urgency. Lilyâs gaze lingered on Ayaka, fixating on her lips that seemed tantalizingly close. Logic dictated that Ayaka wouldnât act on such an impulse, yet Lily couldnât help but wonder if there was a hidden longing in her heart. The very thought seemed so out of place, yet it lingered persistently.
âIâ¦should be fineâ¦probablyâ¦â Lilyâs response came slowly, her voice carrying an unusual softness, like a gentle breeze caressing the dry caverns of her mind, resonating with a hint of jade-like cherry bells.
âYes, youâre indeed fine, with a life force stronger and wilder than ever. But that intensity might threaten to overwhelm your senses,â Momiji observed, her gaze fixed on Lily with a blend of curiosity and affection.
âWhat exactly do you mean by that?â Ayaka demanded, her frustration evident in her tone. It was becoming clear that Lilyâs condition was far from normal, and Momijiâs insinuations only heightened Ayakaâs concern.
âMight I suggest asking her to lower her blade? Itâs rather challenging to speak freely under such circumstances,â Momiji said, her voice laced with a hint of discomfort.
âShimizu, let her go. Itâs not like sheâll be able to escape,â Lily instructed, her voice still retaining that unusual softness. Despite the situation, she maintained a calm demeanor.
Shimizu lowered her blade but her eyes remained fixed on Momiji, âJust so you know, if you werenât of some use to Lily, youâd already be beyond saving.â
Momiji seemed unperturbed by Shimizuâs threat. âNo need for intimidation. As long as I have some control over your little sisterâs condition, you wonât dare harm me.â
âIs that so? Well, as long as you can talk, thatâs enough, right? How about I leave you with just a head and torso?â Shimizuâs voice held a dark edge, her expression growing colder.
âYouâ¦â Momiji momentarily fell silent under Shimizuâs threat, pretending not to hear. As she stepped forward, her confidence seemed to resurface. âLily, do you have any idea what that formation was?â
âI⦠donât know.â Lilyâs response was tinged with uncertainty. Her denial wasnât too firm, suggesting an internal struggle, as if her body was hinting at an answer she wasnât fully ready to acknowledge.
âYou probably donât, so allow me to explain,â Momiji continued, circling Lily with an air of confidence. âAfter Shuten Dojiâs demise, I took control of Mount Ooe. However, my lack of strength led to its decline. Shuten Doji, as one of the worldâs supreme arch-demons, spent centuries in Mount Ooe committing unspeakable evils, tormenting countless women. His malevolent deeds permeated the entire province of Tanba, seeping into the ancient formations spread throughout the land. This naturally led to the creation of the formation that you encountered. Itâs ineffective against most, but for you, itâs particularly potent. After all, you were the one who ended Shuten Doji. All that overwhelming resentment and fury from his legacy, itâs now directed solely at you.â
Lilyâs breaths became shorter, her torn clothes and the flushed state of her aura reflecting her increasing discomfort. âWhat exactly is this formation, and what have you done to me?â
Momijiâs smile broadened, her eyes glinting with mischief. âTo most, itâs harmless. But for someone like youâ¦â She let her words hang in the air, reveling in the unfolding situation.
âI donât understand what youâre implying,â Lily expressed her confusion.
âAre you sure youâd like me to explain this aloud, here in front of everyone?â Momiji queried, slowly advancing towards Lily.
âStop right there, what are you planning?â Ayaka interjected, her voice laced with caution.
âItâs alright, she wonât harm me,â Lily reassured Ayaka, who then stepped back, allowing Momiji to approach. Momiji knelt beside Lily, her fingers gently lifting Lilyâs chin. Ayaka watched, her brow furrowed in slight concern.
Momijiâs whispered words into Lilyâs ear sent a shiver through her. Lilyâs face flushed with shock and confusion. âWhy would you do that? Havenât you forgotten the promise you made to me? I already spared you once.â
âAhh, itâs quite natural for you to be upset,â Momiji acknowledged, her eyes softly tracing the contours of Lilyâs exposed lower belly. âThis is a significant matter for any girl. However, donât hastily assume Iâm the one behind it.â n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Lilyâs response carried a mix of skepticism and irritation. âSo youâre talking about Mount Ooeâs ancient formation. Are you mocking me with this explanation?â Her tone suggested she was not easily convinced by Momijiâs words.
âThatâs the point,â Momiji admitted with a helpless shrug. âThe formation did indeed originate from Mount Ooe, but I wasnât the one who moved it here. You know who did, right?â
âMinamoto no Yoritomo?â Lily questioned.
âYes, heâs aware of the formationâs potency, but unaware of its specific effects on you,â Momiji explained.
âStop this nonsense!â Lilyâs voice, tinged with a sweet tone, betrayed her agitation. âWhy hand him such a formation, knowing heâd use it against me?â
âAhahaha,â Momiji laughed, âDo you think I still command Mount Ooe as in old times? When Yoritomo appears, I have little choice.â
âThen who informed him about the formationâs potential against Lily?â Ayaka interjected.
âI canât say. It wasnât me. Spies from Yoritomo and the Imperial Court are numerous among Mount Ooeâs demons,â Momiji confessed.
âI was too carelessâ¦â Lily murmured, realizing the depth of Yoritomoâs cunning.
Momiji, fanning herself, addressed the group, âYou all seem so fierce, yet Lily looks more perplexed. Iâve come here, deceiving Yoritomo, to assist her. Why harbor resentment against me?â
She continued, âYoritomoâs strategy was indeed cunning. Using a false flag to draw you here, he orchestrated Fujiwara no Hidehiraâs vengeful spirits to guard the formation. He anticipated your methods, expecting you to awaken Hidehira and believe the trap destroyed. Little did anyone suspect the real snare lay in the formation itself, designed specifically for Lily.â
Ayaka pondered, âWhat if someone else had destroyed the formation? How could Yoritomo have predicted Lilyâs actions?â
âItâs a calculated risk based on Lilyâs nature,â Momiji explained. âThe likelihood of her personally dismantling the formation was high. A gamble, indeed, but one that paid off for Yoritomo.â
Lily, deep in thought, asked, âWhy concoct such an elaborate scheme? Why not ambush me en route to Heian-kyo?â
Momiji shrugged, âI canât claim to know all his plans, but I suspect he needed a remote location. In Heian-kyo, your spies are everywhere. On the road, the formation might go unnoticed, especially if you traveled by air. This formation is unique, targeting only you.â
Momijiâs words left Lily in a contemplative silence. As she digested the explanation, a realization dawned on her. Minamoto no Yoritomo, with his devious stratagems, had outmaneuvered her. Despite her awareness of his cunning nature, she found herself ensnared in his web. The intricacies of his plan were slowly coming into focus, and the weight of her oversight weighed heavily on her.
âWhat does this formation do to Lily?â Rei queried, concerned.
âThatâs something you should ask Lily herself. Iâve informed her how to break the formation, so my task here is complete. Iâll be taking my leave now.â
âWait!â Rei unsheathed her blade. âIf you were aware of the trap, why not warn us sooner?â
âEhhh⦠about thatâ¦â Momiji hesitated, then covered her face with her fan, feigning embarrassment. âI was occupied with something else and got delayedâ¦eheheâ¦â
Rei internally scoffed at the excuse, skepticism etched in her thoughts. Despite her doubts, she knew they couldnât harm Momiji if she held crucial information about the formationâs secrets.
âLily, are you alright? What impact does the formation have? Is it something you can overcome?â Reiâs concern was apparent.
Lily, her gaze lowered and her face flushed, remained silent. Her reluctance to speak hinted at a grave situation, casting a shadow of worry over the group

Rei and Shimizu, their swords drawn, fixed their steely gazes on Momiji. âYouâre not going anywhere until Lily assures us sheâs fine,â Rei declared firmly.
âFine, Iâll stay,â Momiji conceded. âRevealing this much is akin to betraying Yoritomo. In this altered world, itâs risky for me to be without your protection.â She paused, then continued, âWhile I canât divulge the core details, I can teach you a technique to mitigate the formationâs effects temporarily.â
âWell, what are you waiting for? Tell us already!â Rei demanded.
Momiji nodded and tossed a small booklet towards Rei, who caught it deftly. âThis book outlines a method to disperse the erratic energies in Lilyâs body caused by the formation. It might not be entirely pleasant, but itâs worth a try.â
Rei scrutinized the booklet, uncertainty in her eyes. âThis might help, but itâs not going to be comfortable,â she remarked.
âUse this to restrain her,â Ayaka said, handing Rei a rope-like spiritual treasure. The tension in the air was notable as they prepared to follow the instructions, hoping to alleviate Lilyâs affliction.
