Chapter 14: Party Under the Stars with a Pan

Dear Neighbor Boy,Words: 10787

*Hazel's pov*

It's Wednesday my dudes...

Okay anyways, it was Halloween! I was so excited.

I went through the school day which was different than usual. There was a Halloween pep rally and all of my classes were just doing fun activities. I could get used to this.

Today, after school was Liam's party. It from seven p.m. and on. Wow, that was going to be late! Luckily, there was no school for the rest of the week due to Halloween being on a Wednesday.

I sat in my last class, English. My favorite class. Everyone was counting down the minutes for school to end. However, before we left, we had to write a scary poem in the spirit of the holiday.

Here was mine:

Can you feel it?

The cold

The wetness

The breathing

Can you feel it?

Tracing its fingers down your back

Whispering things in your ear

Pulling you away

Can you feel it?

Opening it's red eyes

Oozing blood onto your shirt

Covering your screams

Can you feel it?

The emptiness inside you

The loss of feeling in your limbs

The encapsulating of your soul

Can you feel it?

Your existence slipping away

The creature taking over

The fact that you're now gone, forever

Hmm, maybe I wasn't the best at horror, but it was considered good for me. And it was worth a grade, so I hope it was alright. Most of the other kids were just goofing off, but it was I and a few others that actually worked on it. Julia read hers to me and let's just say.... it was really dark.

Soon, the bell rang, and school ended.

Julia and the girls all dragged me along to Ivy's Jeep and into Ivy's house.

We were in her room getting ready for the party. Which wasn't for hours. But they wouldn't listen.

"Why couldn't we wait? The party isn't for another," I checked Ivy's digital clock which read three fifteen,"four hours."

"We're working on one person at a time, remember?" Ivy said as if we agreed on that.

"Who first?" I asked.

"Ooh, me!" Honey chirped. "I want to look my best tonight for- Well, you know." She blushed.

We all knew she meant Connor.

~~~~~~~
By the time Ivy finished with all the other girls and herself, it was six o five. She had an hour to get me ready.
Oh, and the girls all had really cute costumes, too. Ivy was Poison Ivy, Violet was the Suicide Squad version of Harley Quinn, Honey was Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Julia was a dark astronaut, and Anikah was an alien girl.
Anyways, I was pushed into the vanity chair as Ivy started on my makeup. I was Wendy so it was a pretty natural look. It took no longer than twenty minutes.
Next, she worked on my hair. She put half of it up and curled the part that was left down, finishing it off with a blue ribbon.
Lastly, I entered the bathroom to change into my costume. I put on the sky blue nightgown, ruffled white socks, and black flats.
I exited the bathroom and the girls just lit up like the fairy godmothers they were.
"Sprinkle me with pixie dust, you look so good!" Honey exclaimed.
"Damn, Ivy did a good job." Violet said with wide eyes, the other girls nodding.
I laughed as I blushed. "Thanks, guys!" I skipped over to them and suggested,"Let's get going, yeah?" The party was about to start and knowing Liam's parties, it was probably already getting filled.
Everyone agreed.
We hopped into Ivy's iconic red Jeep and headed off to Liam's. I checked the digital clock above the radio and saw that the party had already started, but it was normal to arrive a little late.
We walked in and right away you could see the array of red solo cups, so abstract it could be considered modern art. Or you could just sing Red Solo Cups by Toby Keith, I thought to myself.
I was a bit surprised to see this much action after only fifteen minutes of the party. I stepped over a drunk dude who I think was Jeremy Michaels. I sighed as I thought about Be More Chill from the name of a classmate.
As I was caught up in my musical thoughts, I realized that I lost the girls... Again.
"Seriously?" I whine.
"Hey, Hazel. What's wrong?"
I turned around to find Caleb behind me, drinking what I guessed was either tequila or Sprite out of a red solo cup. I decided to think it was the latter even though it probably wasn't.
"Oh, nothing. I just lost my friends." I replied loudly to be heard over the loud music.
"Hey, I can keep you busy for now." He suggested.
"And how would you do that?" I laughed.
He pondered for a moment and then a spark flashed in his eyes. "C'mon!"
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me to Liam's kitchen.
"Okay, so how are we gonna have fun in Liam's kitchen?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Shots."
"What? Nuh-uh. No." I put my hands up as if the police had said freeze and shook my head.
"Come on, it's fun." He tried to persuade.
"I...I've never drank before." I admitted. He stared at me, dumfounded.
"Now you gotta have a shot." He poured some tequila into a shot glass and tried to make me drink it. I leaned back as he leaned forward.
Just as he was about to pry my mouth open, a voice asked,"What the hell is going on here?"
It was Asher and he didn't looked all too pleased. Though, a side note, he was indeed wearing the Peter Pan costume.
"Oh, um... He just wanted to do shots. I mean I'm not the type to drink, though so I won't be having any." I laughed in a very awkward way since I knew the boys had a bit of a feud.
"You have to! Shots are so fun!" Caleb exclaimed as he thrust the shot towards my mouth. I ducked and the shot spilled behind me.
"Hey, lay off man! If she doesn't want shots, then don't make her." Asher said inching towards Caleb and me.
"Dude, chill. I was playing around." Caleb stopped laughing and put his hands up defensively.
I looked at Asher, begging him to stop and to refrain from doing anything stupid. I could tell he wanted to go on, but he thankfully stopped himself. "Didn't look like it." He mumbled.
I looked between the two boys and knew I had to do something to get them away from each other.
"Well, Caleb. It was nice talking to you! I'll see you later, I just gotta go find my friends. Asher can help me." I waved at Caleb and pulled Asher by the wrist to the backyard.
I took a second to catch my breath and breathe in the cold, October air. The leaves from the tree in Liam's backyard were many different warm tones and were slowly falling.
I was going to say something about the whole Asher vs Caleb thing, but decided against it. Instead, I made a comment on Asher's costume. I looked up at him with a grin and said,"Nice costume, Peter."
"Right back at ya, Wendy." He smiled at me, relieved that I didn't touch on the other subject.
I plopped myself on the ground as my dress fluttered around me in a heap. Asher crouched down beside me. The backyard was mostly empty except for a few dudes passed out on the floor.
I shivered a bit from the cold air and Asher immediately reacted. "Wanna wear my jacket?" He had a sap green bomber jacket around his waist to match the green of his costume.
I nodded and smiled as I quietly said thanked him. My cheeks were becoming rosy due to the weather so it looked probably looked like I was blushing.
He untied the jacket from his waist and wrapped it around my shoulders. I looked up and admired the night sky. "Aren't the stars just so beautiful."
"Yeah." He said in a bit of a daze with a light sigh. I looked at him to find him looking right back at me. He looked away and gulped, making his Adam's apple bob up and down.
Wait. Was he talking about me?! I thought. I looked down to suppress a smile. Asher was actually becoming nicer to me.
I could hear the faint blaring of "It's Almost Halloween" by Panic! at the Disco from inside. I had to refrain from running inside to jam to it because it was just so nice out here with Asher.
It was comfortably silent for a bit until he asked,"Wanna sneak out of this party and go somewhere?"
I looked at him with a grin forming on my face,"Where?"
"I'll surprise you." He put out his hand and helped me up. Then he grabbed my wrist and directed me out the side gate.
We got in his car and drove off. We went through the usual routine of him handing me his phone for music and I played the Marilyn Manson version of "This is Halloween" from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I watched as all the colorful trees zoomed past us. I danced along to the song and I even saw I'm bopping his head to the song until we arrived. We were at a park in a giant meadow.
He opened the door for me and I climbed out. The air was a bit chilly but very enjoyable, as it smelled like happy rain. I always loved rain, anyways.
I followed him to the playground and we climbed up the slide.
"Care to go first?" He asked as he gestured to the slide in a smirk. It was my turn to smirk when I pushed him down the slide and slid on down right after him.
"Hey, that's just mean!" He huffed and crossed his arms over his chest.
"That's what you get." I teased.
He got over it pretty quickly, though as he grabbed my wrist and guided me through the meadow under a giant willow tree. It was extremely beautiful. I gazed upon it as Asher said,"I like to come here a lot cause there's never really many people here. Dare I be cliche and say: It's my safe place or my hideout?" He chuckled.
"Woah, that's amazing." I stared at him in awe.
"What's your safe place?" He asked.
"Either my room or a really good book." His was way more beautiful and exciting than mine.
He plopped himself into the calf-length grass. I followed in suit. We looked up at the beautiful stars for a few minutes. Then I turned towards him.
"Asher?" He hummed in response. "I know I've only known you for like two months, but you're actually a really cool person. It's nice being able just to plop down in a meadow with a person, both dressed as Disney characters, and watch the stars. Thanks."
He looked at me and grinned. "You're not so bad yourself." I punched him in the arm and he grimaced. "Kidding."
Then he smiled genuinely. "No, but yeah. It's cool you feel that way because, I think you're pretty cool, too. I could never do this with most people. I guess you're just easy to be around." He sounded embarrassed to be admitting that.
I smiled as I looked back at the stars.
I felt our hands lightly brushing each other and soon, they found themselves clasped to each other. I hid my blushing face in my hair.
"Let's just stay here and hang out for a bit longer." I suggested.
He smiled and nodded. And that's what we did. We watched the stars and held hands for a while longer...
