âHey, hey, you know what?â
âI donât know.â
âIsnât she cold? The Ice Princess from the high school next dooâah.â
âIce Princess?â
When I asked that back, Eiji let out a voice saying, {Oh no].
As I stared at himâ¦.Eiji let out a sigh, and said,
âThe girl that you likedâ
â¦â¦?
â¦â¦Oh.
âYou mean that girl on the train? I donât like her or dislike her or anything. â¦â¦Or rather, why is she called the Ice Princess?â
ââ¦â¦Yeah. I didnât mean to ruin your dreams, okay? Is that okay? The reason why the girl from the high school next door is called Ice Princess is~~.â
Eiji then explained one by one.
Ice Princess.
Her gaze was sharp and her expression was stiff. Everyone who spoke to her, both boys and girls, were struck by her sharp gaze. Her family seems to be one of the upper class, and itâs rare that anyone goes to talk to her.
She doesnât let anyone in. Her appearance has earned her the nickname {Ice Princess.}
âI just recognized her from the way you said she looked. I donât think sheâs going to talk to you, so I thought it would be better to let her stay in your imagination.â
âI see. â¦â¦Well, you know, what the heck. I appreciate your concern.â
Butâ¦.. the expression on her face doesnât change, huh?
I bet sheâs been through a lot of pain.
â¦.Letâs put aside whether mending is good or not for her. Donât misjudge my priorities.
Right now, the best thing to do is decrease her phobia.
âââ
Morning. I get on the train. Usually I pack in the back of the train, but not today.
I stay near the entrance and exit, getting off to make room for the people who were about to get off, and then getting in and out again.
Thenâ¦â¦a few stations later. I called out to the girl who came in.
âShinonome.â
ââ¦â¦Ah.â
As soon as she found me. She came closer.
And then. I moved with her to the corner and put her against the wall. And I put myself in front of her.
ââ¦â¦Thank you, very much.â
âDonât worry about it.â
I guess she could tell that I was casuallyâ¦..taking care of her not to bump into guys.
After saying a few words, I kept quiet.
Silence falls over the place. â¦..Well, I was just asked to stay. I guess Iâm free to do whatever I want after that. Or rather, I should. Thereâs no point in bothering her by talking to her
ââ¦.Um, Minori kun.â
But my thoughts were shattered.
ââ¦â¦What is it?â
âUm, Iâm sorry if you donât like it. Iâve never really talked to many people before. â¦â¦If youâd like to, I want to train on how to talk to people.â
Oh, Sheâs being very honest again. Well, thereâs no reason to say no to this either.
âI donât mind.â
âThank you.â
Then she bowed slightly.
Silence fell.
ââ¦â¦What should we talk about?â
I almost slipped down.
âW-well. Youâre not used to it. That doesnât mean Iâm used to it either. â¦..Oh, yeah. Do you have any hobbies?â
âI do a little flower arrangementâ¦â¦,and I like tea ceremony and Japanese dance.â
âOhâ¦..â
Sheâs saying something amazing. Come to think of it, there are rumors that her family is from the upper class.
ââ¦â¦What are your hobbies, Minori kun?â
âMe? Anime and reading, I guess. When I say reading itâs mostly light novels and such.
âAnimeâ¦â¦? I havenât seen much of it.â
Silence fell over the place again. Weâre not too good at conversing, I guess.
ââ¦Um, oh yeah. Is there a reason why you started doing tea ceremony, flower arrangement, or Japanese dance?â
âI was told by my parents to take up these subjects. At first, I felt it was boring. But when I tried it, I found it very interesting. I started to get into it when I was in elementary school. â¦â¦Unfortunately, people donât get excited when I tell them that.â
ââ¦â¦I see.â
Itâs true that there may not be many high school girls who have those as their hobbies.
âSpeaking of which, are you doing club activities?â
âItâs the tea ceremony club I mentioned earlierâ¦.â
âSo there are clubs like tea ceremoniesâ¦.â
âIâm the only member of the club. Itâs more of an association.â
âI seeâ¦â¦.â
Iâve been amazed from the beginning. Tea ceremony, flower arrangement, traditional Japanese danceâ¦itâs like what you see on TV, not that I ever watch one.
âWhat about you, Minori kun? Club activities and so on.â
Then, this time, Shinonome looked at me and asked.
ââ¦â¦Iâm in the go-home club. Iâm going through an ordinary day every day.â
âOrdinary, you say?â
âIâm living like a commoner.â
As I said that. â¦.She smiled.
ââ¦I envy you a little.â
âThe grass is always greener on the other side. â¦â¦Well, Iâm aware that Iâm living the life I want.â
It might change once I do club activities. But Iâm just fine the way I am now.
â¦â¦Iâm sure Eiji would be furious if he heard me talking about this stuff. Well, Iâm not going to put it into words.
âMinori kunââ
Shinonome was about to say something. At that moment, she arrived at her destination.
ââNo, itâs nothing. Well then, see you tomorrow.â
âYeah, see you tomorrow.â
And so it went. The day was over.
âââ
âOh? What? Are you in a good mood today?â
ââ¦â¦Is that so? Isnât it just your imagination?â
As soon as I arrived in the morning, Eiji said that to me.
âWhat is it? Did you finally find a girl you like?â
âI wish I couldâ¦â¦â
âO-oh. My bad.â
âEiji, are you doing well with your girlfriend?â
âOf course. Weâre very much in love.â
âIâm happy to hear thatâ¦â¦â
Eiji has a girlfriend. They were classmates in middle school, although they went to different high schools, they seem to be getting along well. For now, I have an acquaintance too.
âI want you to get a girlfriend soon. It will change your world, you know?â
âNo, I donât need one right now.â
âIf you say so. But if you donât mind, Iâll introduce you to some girls.â
âSomeday.â
And then we talked. The usual routine at school goes by again.
âââ
âGood morning.â
âOh, good morning.â
Another day. The day begins.
âMinori kun. What shall we talk about today?â
âYouâre dumping it on meâ¦..I see. How about your studies as a student?â
âItâs not bad.â
I replied to Shinonome. She stared at me intently.
âAh-. Are there any subjects you are good at or bad at?â
âIâm good at world history and Japanese history. Itâs an interesting subject. Iâm also good at other subjects in generalâ¦.but, Iâm not good at English. Really.â
I was so surprised to hear that, I rolled my eyes.
âYou canât understand English?â
ââ¦â¦Yes. Iâm ashamed of it. I get flustered when foreigners talk to me on the street.â
â¦â¦.I couldnât help but giggle. Then, Shinonome pouted.
âMy bad. The gap is too big. â¦.Then letâs talk about me.â
I felt a little. So I opened my mouth.
âIâm good at English. But Iâm not good at classics.â
ââ¦â¦Youâre not good at classics?â
Shinonome widened her eyes as if she was surprised.
âYeah. I donât understand what the old people were thinking. Iâm not good at science subjects like physics.â
âI seeâ¦â¦.The classics certainly have different values than today. It also changes with time. â¦â¦If you donât mind, I can teach you. If you have the textbook, that is.â
âAre you sure?â
âYes. â¦.I never taught anyone. I wonder if I can help you, even if itâs only a little.â
I wonder if this is a way of saying thank you as usual.
I wonder if this was her normal gratitude.
If I refuse her, it might make her worry.
âThen please. We donât have much time left today, so maybe tomorrow.â
ââ¦.I see, Iâve almost arrived.â
Shinonome who muttered to my wordsâ¦â¦
Just a little bit. I thought she seemed to show a lonely expression. However, as soon as I noticed, she returned to her original expressionless face.
Itâs probably just my imagination. I guess.
âThen Iâll see you tomorrow.â
âYeah, see you tomorrow.â
Shinonome then left the train.
âââ
ââ¦â¦Sigh.â
âWhatâs wrong? Eiji. Youâre sighing.â
âI donât want to. You know that the midterm test is less than a month, right? Iâm already depressed.â
ââ¦.Is that so?â
âIâm fine, butâ¦â¦my girlfriend .â
âOh-â¦â¦you mentioned that.â
Eijiâs girlfriend is apparently unable to study. He said sheâs on the verge of a red mark and he always has a hard time teaching her.
âWell, itâs going to be a part of youth anyway. Teaching her to study.â
âThatâs true. Itâs not that Iâm not serious. I can set up a reward, you know? We can do things at the end of the test.â
ââ¦..Are you boasting in a roundabout way?â
âWho knows.â
Even though I know that Eiji is already evil when he laughs. I sighed.
âIf sheâs really good, she probably already has one.â
âIf sheâs really good, she should be able to do it.â
âHaha. Arenât you mistaken?â
Then I let out another sigh to Eiji, who was laughing.
âââ
âThat meansâ¦..â
In the morning. I had started studying with Shinonome.
At first it was only the classics, but the subjects gradually increased.
I never actually learned about something other than English.
âAnd here areâ¦.â
I felt bad about it. When she said [Teaching is more fun than I thought] and seemed to be really enjoying itâ¦and so, this is how she taught me.
However, There was one problem.
Her distance. Itâs rather very close.
Well, it canât be helped. Weâre looking at the same textbook. Her finger that pointed at something occasionally touched mine, and her face somewhat very close.
And it smells really good.
ââ¦â¦? Is there something wrong?â
âN-no, nothing.â
Seeing me like that, Shinonome tilted her head slightly. And then she nodded her head as if she was convinced.
âItâs true that itâs a little cramped. If you could sit down, I could teach you while I writeâ¦â¦â
âY-yeahâ¦â¦youâre right.â
I agreed because she kind of misunderstood it.
Then, Shinonome began to glance at me. As if to say something, she cleared her throat.
ââ¦â¦If itâs okay with Minori kun. Would you like to have aâ¦.study session?â
Thatâs what she said.
