Jasper looked up aloofly. âSign the paper, and Tinkerbell will be ours then.â
âMr. Searle, itâs not how things work,â Camila replied stiffly.
Jasper retorted, âRules are dead, and people arenât. Weâll give you the maternity test result once itâs out, and my lawyer will take care of the rest of the procedures.â
âSure,â Camila answered and checked her watch for the time. âIâll take my leave now. My condolences to both of you.â
After a long moment, Jasper slowly sat beside Esther and said softly, âIâve talked to Madam Jenner. We can take Tinkerbell now!â
âI can take her to see Bradley now?â asked Esther.
Jasper answered softly and sadly, âYes, but you canât carry Tinkerbell back now since they just operated on her. Iâll ask my secretary to order her a customized coffin. What do you think?â
âOkay.â Estherâs heart throbbed in pain. âChoose the best.â
âIâll also ask my secretary to buy a beautiful dress for Tinkerbell, and you wear it for her later, okay?â
âOkay,â answered Esther.
Jasper walked off with his phone to call his secretary while Esther stared at the lit-up sign above the operation ward doors.
Taking her heart out was not a complicated surgery, so the light went off in less than half an hour. The doctor came out and told Esther, âI thank you and Tinkerbell on behalf of the child.â
Esther stood up mechanically, like an emotionless statue, and asked, âCan I take her home now?â
âYes.â
When Esther entered the room, it was empty and silent.
Tinkerbellâs thin body was covered with a piece of white cloth. Esther pulled a corner of it away to reveal the girlâs quiet face.
She could no longer hold her tears back. Droplets of tears fell on Tinkerbellâs face.
Jasper came to her with a paper bag. âEsther, a princess dress, crystal shoes, and a tiara are in the bag. Put them on Tinkerbell.â
Esther accepted the bag with shaky hands and sobbed. âOkay.â 2 Jasper was a man and was not related to Tinkerbell, so he left the room without Estherâs reminder.
Esther carefully put away the cloth on Tinkerbell. She could see the wound left by the surgery on her easily. After the doctor had taken her heart, he had patiently stitched the wound up and dressed it in gauze to prevent blood from seeping.
Esther could not help tearing up in heartache again.
She opened the paper bag and retrieved an Elsa dress that all little girls loved to wear for Tinkerbell clumsily. It was her first time dressing a child, and she was not familiar with it. Just one dress and she was already soaked in sweat.
She gently put Tinkerbell back on the operation table and put the crystal shoes on her. They fit just nicely. Finally, she pulled a comb from the paper bag and combed the girlâs hair.
âTinkerbell, Iâm mommy.
âIâm sorry. I shouldâve told you last night that Iâm your mother.
âIâm not a mommy whoâs adopting you. Iâm your real mommy.
âIâm too stupid and naive. I didnât know you two are still alive. If I knew, I wouldnât let you two suffer so much.
âTinkerbell, donât be scared of the cold. Mommy will be with you very soon.
âMommy will stay with you forever. No one will separate us again.â
Esther kept talking to Tinkerbell as she combed her a pretty princess hairstyle.
