I quietly opened the door at the back of the classroom, sneaked inside so as not to get caught up in the struggle, and quickly sat down at the very back of the room, closest to the open door, to listen in.
âHello, Claire. Itâs been a long time.â
âOh. Itâs a shame there wonât be more opportunities to say itâs been a while.â
In response to Mistâs casual greeting, Claire said sarcastically.
âWell, well, well. We may never see each other again, so letâs at least see each other for a short while.â
The two of them were having a stinging conversation with cold smiles plastered on their faces, and the students around them were looking away and trembling in fear, trying not to get into trouble.
The only one of them I see, a beautiful blonde girl, looks paler than any of them, and is muttering to herself, resisting the pull of her waist.
âIâm the only one who can stop these two, because of my familyâs status. Iâm the only one who can stop them. Iâm scared, but Iâm going to do it, Iâm the only one, Iâm the only oneâ¦â¦.â
Alice, youâre in so much trouble. She looks so pale, and her back is so low. Itâs just like before a ski jump. The two of them continued their conversation, as if they didnât see Alice and their trembling classmates.
âI heard that the results of the exam will be announced before the entrance ceremony today. Of course you did well, didnât you?â
âWell, yes. The answer sheets will be returned, so why donât we go over the answers together? If there are any grading errors, weâll be in trouble.â
Wow, Mist has gone to smooth over the unfair scoring privileges of the great nobility.
âDo you think Iâm stupid? Iâm sure Iâm the best.â
Claire exhaled, as if mocking her, and then puffed out her chest at Mist.
âHuh? You say that. Well then, what would you do for me if I was first?â
The people in the class buzzed at Mistâs words.
âOh, good. If youâre the best, Iâll keep quiet and not say a word in class from now on. In return, if Iâm the best, youâll have to accept the same conditions.â
âI like that! Iâll accept that conditionâ
Despite the fears and worries of their classmates who had heard about the strange turn the story had taken, the two of them had no doubt at all that they were the best.
Just then, the bell rang, signaling the beginning of class. At the same time the classroom door swung open and a man in his thirties or forties, with the appearance of a teacher, walked into the room. The man opened his mouth, not caring about the complicated atmosphere in the classroom.
âUh, do you mind going to your seats?â
Claire and Mist curtsied gracefully, as if they were in a good mood, and slowly took their seats.
âMy name is Markus Karrall, and Iâll be your homeroom teacher. I look forward to working with you.â
When the teacher finished introducing himself, I heard a lot of applause. The only people who could afford to clap in this situation would be the two people involved.
I mean, what is this situation? Thereâs a princess, a marquis daughter and a count daughter but there is no one who looks happy.
âWell, then, Iâll take attendanceâ¦â
âProfessor Karrall!â
Claire interrupted the teacher who was trying to take attendance.
âYes? Uh, youâre Clare Alcala, right? Is something wrong?â
âDo you know the results of the entrance exam?â
Claire asks the teacher with a smiling face.
âOf course I know. The representative of the new students, together with Princess Amelicia, will give a speech at the entrance ceremony.â
Alice, you look so uncomfortable. She didnât go to stop them earlier eitherâ¦â¦.I guess she must be pretty scared if she canât go there after putting so much self-discipline into it.
âI see. Well then, can I ask you to tell me who the representative is?â
As soon as Claire said that, the air in the classroom tingled.
âI understand. The sooner we do this, the better.â
Mr. Karrall replied in an extremely carefree voice, which was inappropriate for the tense atmosphere, and made the place even tenser. This attitude shows how unpredictable he is.
Mr. Karrall pulled out the attendance book and opened his mouth after looking at it.
âUh, first place in this yearâs entrance exam isâ¦â¦.â
The tension builds, I could hear the thumping of my classmatesâ hearts. Alice, for example, was praying with her hands folded in front of her forehead. Finally, Mr. Karrall turned to the students and said,
âChris Dreschord.â
The tense air seemed to escape with a whoosh, and everyone in the classroom except for Ms. Karrall and me was puzzled.
Yeah. Well, thatâs what I thoughtâ¦â¦.I donât know what to do about this situationâ¦â¦I donât think I can handle my school life from now onâ¦â¦.
