Chapter 3

“Where is she?” I consciously lay on the bed, peeking one eye open slowly taking in my surroundings, I didn’t realise where I was until my brain started functioning and started hearing voices from outside the room.

I had slept in Daniel’s bed, shit scrambling to my feet I made the bed neatly and tip toed out of the room slowly opening the door.

“There you are,” that wasn’t a question I thought inwardly, slowly I turned around to come face to face with Daniel himself curse my bad luck in the mornings

“I uh,” pointed my finger towards him room, he smirked and then pushed me up against the wall I started shivering which seemed to be amusing him even more.

“Do you know what happens when someone disobeys me?” he threaten, I closed my eyes hoping for the worst but was only met with silence, Daniel’s hand moved up and I braced myself for another slap though instead he caressed my cheek while I stood shocked.

“You’re just lucky I’m not in a bad mood today,” he whispered leaning close, my body made no movement whatsoever to react it just stayed still but before I knew it he had jerked me from against the wall making me fall on to him.

“Now, whose going to be a good girl and make breakfast for everyone downstairs,” he ordered, “then you’ll be escorted to school and don’t think about running away darlin’,” with that he left me standing in the middle of the corridor while his image got smaller and smaller as he moved away from me.

“Way to go Sidney,” I snorted sarcastically, jogging through the corridors I finally found the stairs that led downstairs into the kitchen where I was met with seven heavy built men that towered over me.

“You,” one of them said huskily, “were the breakfast already?” he shouted, all of them looked pissed and ready to take me out but I held my ground.

“I’m sorry,” I respond moving towards the fridge I grabbed some eggs, bacon, sausages then moved to find some beans in the cupboard. Once I found everything I glanced up at the clock that displayed 8am, only thirty minutes to make the food. I got started with not a single bit of help from the guys sitting behind me.

Two of them looked familiar to the guys who escorted me back in the church, one was the rude one and the other looked more like Daniel maybe his best friend. It then slowly came to mind that Daniel was much older than me, with me just being seventeen but a few months left till I was eighteen.

The marriage, I couldn’t believe I was stupid enough to get married. Quickly moving to the cooker, turning the gas off I took out eight plates, might as well eat while I’m here. Putting breakfast into all the plates, there was just about enough left for me. Serving everything to everyone I leaned against the cooker which was still hot but was keeping my back warm, picking up my own plate I didn’t realised how hungry I was until Daniel came into the kitchen and purposely brushed past me causing me to lose my balance dropping the plate onto the floor.

That was fine, but he had pushed me back making my reflexes reach out to grab something and just like that I burnt my hand. Tears pricked my eyes, everyone in the room laughed I looked up to see Daniel who stood there looking smug.

My hand hurt, blisters were starting to form but it was twenty minutes to nine and I couldn’t afford to miss school again I already had to catch up with yesterday’s work. While everyone ate, I bent down picking up the broken pieces of the plate throwing it away and scrubbing it by the time I finished that the plates in the sink started too built up. I was alone in the kitchen now, everyone had left so I quickly washed, dried and stacked them running upstairs into my small room.

Stripping off my ragged dirty clothes, I left them on the bed for later this evening grabbing some faded old jeans and a top with a cardigan I picked up my personal bag racing down the stairs.

Making my way out of the house stood my two escorts; I pushed past them getting out of the house expecting a car. I followed them towards the car but as soon as I reached for the car handle a hand grabbed mine,

“No honey,” he grinned, “you’re walking,” my mouth hung open as both men jumped into the car laughing. Turning away ashamed I made my way walking down the long road; it was at least a ten minute journey if walking.

I sped up hoping I wasn’t late, at one point I sprinted not that I loved school or anything I absolutely despised it don’t get me wrong but I had to finish, get good grades and get into university to train to be a forensic scientist then I can reopen my mother’s case to put away the real criminal who had killed my mother in cold blood.

Every time I thought about that it really boosted my strength, “Don’t worry mum,” I whispered to myself, “I’m not going to let your murder go in vain,”

Reaching the school gates, I was right on time. I saw a car pull up behind me, the window rolled down and I saw my escorts grinning at me as I wore a tired expression. You still have work this afternoon Sid, my head told me.

Rushing through the corridors I saw all sorts of normal teenagers that had a really great life, but then there was me the odd one out, the loner and nobody but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Shoving all the stuff from my locker to my bag, I grabbed my first lesson books Advance Chemistry it was one of my favourite and most interesting subjects plus to top it off I was good in it which made it even greater.

Adavance Chemistry was long since it was a double, but then at break I strolled towards the library taking a chance to get some books to read about forensic science. Checking out with these books, I promised the librarian that I’d be back at lunch to collect them if she kept them safe which she gladly did.

Next was maths, it was absolutely and most utterly the subject I dreaded the most. Math either came naturally to you or it didn’t so me it was a struggle but what was worst was that I was sitting next to the school most popular bad boy not that I cared or anything. I was here for one sole purpose, to study and that was it.

But the guy wouldn’t leave things alone, “So nerd girl what’s your name?” I ignored him blocking him with my hair and arm continuing my algebra sums. It was hard enough that I was struggling without the added stress of him bugging me.

“Oh so we doing silent treatment now,” he sniggered, “that’s sexy but I’d like to see everything under too,” I blushed turning a deep shade of red, what the hell was his problem.

“Can you please shut up and do this with other whores,” I retorted, “there are plenty, I’m not interested,” that made his shut up, and I was glad but this only made him more interested. The bell rung signalling it was lunch, even though my stomach was rumbling i chose to head towards the library not affording to waste money on lunch.

“Yo nerd girl,” the guy won’t stop, “where you going, lunch is that way,” he tried again.

“No shit Sherlock,” I answered back, “why don’t you go then?” I asked rhetorically. He followed me quietly into the library where I got my reserved books making my way to the quiet reading area.

I sat on the floor, dropping my bag leaning against the wall sighing deeply. My stomach let out a huge grumble to which I blushed knowing he was lurking over me.

“The stomach tells a different story,” he chuckled, I couldn’t help it so I asked,

“Why are you following me?” he looked taken aback by this question, but something crossed his face.

“Wow,” he faked hurt, mockingly placing a hand over his heart, “can’t a guy and girl just be friends,” I bursted out laughing causing him to raised an eyebrow.

“That’s rich coming from you,” I piped up, turning back to my book. His mouth hung a little open but he recovered quickly.

“That hurts Parker,” he spoke,

“How do you know my name?” I questioned, “I don’t even know yours,” I admitted shyly letting out a small smile.

“You don’t know my name?” he exclaimed,

“Quiet down there!” the librarian hushed us, I slapped his arm lightly.

“Shut it, and yes I don’t know,” I told him he looked confused and shocked in one.

“The infamous Nathan aka Nate the best,” he boasted, I giggled at his mockery he was one weird guy.

“Right Nate,” I hushed him, “shut it and let me study,” he gladly accepted my offer leaning back and closing his eyes. Even though I was tired I couldn’t afford to fall behind in Chemistry plus I had to cover yesterday’s work which totalled four pages. The hour past in silence, once in a while I stole glances at his he looked so much like Daniel that the resemblance would’ve made them like cousins or something but what are the chances to that every person that knows Daniel is either rude, nasty or disgusting.

The bell rung slicing the silence in the air, Nate’s body jerked awake at the sudden sound and he turned towards me,

“I fell asleep,” he smiled apologetically, I rolled my eyes at his fake innocence, “do you want to hang out after school?” he asked, for his it was probably easy to ask and any other girl would’ve said yes, if I was any other girl I would’ve said yes but the thing was I wasn’t any other girl, I was the girl who was broke, the girl who witnessed her mother die and the girl who had no chance of saving her marriage whatsoever in the long run.

“Sorry I can’t,” I replied sadly, “got work,” he nodded his head before exchanging goodbyes we headed our opposite ways I got a few curious glances from everyone but chose to ignore it.

Double English, great I thought internally any other day it would’ve been my favourite subject but now, now I dreaded it the most. So here I was sitting in English reading ‘How to kill a mockingbird’ i loved how confident the father was to prejudice and fought through it all but it’s all talk.

Here I was sitting thinking and thinking about everything and everything, it amazed me how much time you waste when you have the chance but I was ahead in reading anyways so it wouldn’t make a difference but two hours went by swiftly and I was the first one out of the door for a change as usually I would always be the last one out of the door.

Dragging my feet across the pavement kicking lonely stones on the floor I kept my head down walking rapidly to work, I had recently gotten work at the busiest local restaurant for cleaning, sweeping and all the other chores it wasn’t the best job but a job is a job and someone has got to do it.

So I did it, started my shift at three-forty and it lasted till seven, it was a three hour twenty minute job but then again it was the biggest and busiest restaurant in the area so time went by quickly because I didn’t get one second to think and today of all days I had to fill in for a waiter.

“Oi waiter,” a guy shouted, I scurried along to him who looked very impatient, “do you know how long I’ve been waiting you good for nothing pieces of crap,” he slammed his menu on the table turning the attention of the whole restaurant to us cursing with some colourful language he stormed out of the restaurant clutching his business bag.

Fuck him.

Finally seven came and work for today was over, or so I thought it was. Changing out of my work clothes into my ones, the ragged and filthy old ones I retreated out of the restaurant heading towards Daniel’s mansion. I kind of knew where I was going but at the same time I didn’t, no pressure Sid.

It took longer than expected to get home where it would’ve taken me ten minutes if I walked fast took me twenty minutes as I took my time dreading my evening. Slowly I took each step carefully as I walked towards the door, bringing my hand up to knock on the door i didn’t even get a chance to hit it before the door slung wide open.

“Where have you been?” Daniel shouted, his eyes were bloodshot and it almost looked like he was going to burst a vein,

“I uh,” I gulped before resuming, “had work,” waiting for something to happen he roughly moved towards me pushing me into the house.

“You just lucky that the other maid,” his every word made me shiver, “was here to make us dinner otherwise you don’t want to deal with a man with an empty stomach,” he reached for my arm and twisted it so were we closer to each other than normal.

“Yo Dan whose there?” the voice sounded familiar but I couldn’t pinpoint who it was until I was face to face with him.

Turning around I was met with,

“Parker?"
