Diego Navarroâs house is pretty fucking nice. I have to hand it to the cartel bastard. Heâs got good taste.
Itâs a multi-million-dollar townhouse on the opposite side of the harbor, almost right up against the water. It looks a lot like mine, only even bigger, with gaudy columns in the front. The fucker clearly doesnât care about being subtle.
âIâve been watching this place ever since the meeting a few days ago,â Eric says, peering through a pair of small binoculars. âNavarroâs got some pretty set habits. Like, for example, he goes for a run every morning right at six. Then heâs back and inside for a couple of hours, but then he goes out again around eight for coffee at a shop nearby. Heâs there for like a half hour before coming back.â
âYou sure he does this all the time?â
âIâd have to watch him more to make sure, but yeah, I think so. They seem like pretty well-established routines anyway.â
âWhat about work?â
âHeâs on his network the whole time. Most of what heâs doing is via encrypted channels, but itâs not particularly good. William and Daron both think they can break it, given enough time.â
âNo need for that.â I purse my lips, thinking. âI donât care what business heâs conducting. Thatâs not so important. But if we can tap into his communications, thatâs a bonus.â
âIâll see what the guys think.â
âWhat else did you learn?â
Eric seems excited to keep talking. I appreciate his enthusiasm. âHonestly, the place isnât that well-guarded. Heâs got some guys that come by once in a while, but otherwise itâs just him in there. His security system is off the shelf too, nothing special about it. We could take it out with our eyes closed. I doubt heâs got anything important in there, though. Heâs been around long enough to know that you donât keep the real shit at home. Still, we could easily get in there and take whatever heâs got.â
I listen to him describe details of the house and its layout, my mind spinning. Ideas start to form in my brain, and something snags. âDo you remember a story Daron told?â I ask suddenly, interrupting him.
Eric hesitates. âHe tells a lot.â
âHe called it the perfect hack. Remember that one?â
âSure, it was basically a guy that pinned a crime on an ex-girlfriend or some shit like that, right?â
âExactly.â I stare at Navarroâs house for a little bit longer as the idea snaps into place. âLetâs head back to the bar. I want to talk to the group.â
Eric starts the car and drives. I close my eyes and let the details of the plan begin to take shape. Iâm thinking about Riley too, about her moans, about her wanting to get pregnant, about our life together, the future weâre going to have.
If I can pull this off.
Daron and William are waiting at the Pomegranate House. Theyâre sitting at the bar watching an Orioles game and making bets on their phones. I sit down next to Daron and Eric sits on the other side of William, and all three guys turn in my direction.
âI have a job for us,â I say to them. I feel a strange pang of eagerness flit into my stomach. âBut I want you all to understand the full scope before we get started.â
âWe know itâs Los Sombras,â William says with a shrug. âItâs no big deal.â
âNot just Los Sombras. This is going to include Black Mantis as well.â
William and Eric both look surprised. But Daron only sighs and takes a long drink of his beer.
âExplain,â Daron says.
âI donât have the details yet, but itâs going to be a big score. If we pull it off, Mantis is going to pay us good money, and itâs going to deal with Los Sombras and get them off my brother-in-lawâs back. You three will split the full take from Mantis. My payment is keeping my family safe.â
Daron grunts and seems to soften a bit. âThatâs generous. How much we talking?â
âTwice my usual fee. Thatâll be a solid win for you three.â
âAll we have to do is go up against two of the more violent gangs in the region,â Daron says with a sigh. âYeah, sure, why the fuck not?â
âI already said Iâm in.â William raises his glass. âTo our first job as a crew.â
âHereâs to that,â Eric chimes in.
I sit back and study the three men. They laugh together, and Daron starts telling a story about the time he hacked into a heavily guarded bank system as a teenager and nearly got caught. Itâs probably bullshit, but it gets everyone laughing.
I can feel it then. Everything coming together. The light at the end of the tunnel. The only way this is going to work out. I need all my skill and a whole lot of luck, but this is possible.
Probably, at least.
âYouâre fucking insane,â Riley says, pacing back and forth across the basement. Sheâs got paint swatches, lamps, bits of carpet, and thrift store paintings scattered all over the place as she tries to figure out what she wants to do with the area.
âIt makes sense though, doesnât it?â
âTo a crazy person, sure.â
âCome on. Think about it. We need to get Los Sombras off your brotherâs back, and we need to find a way to get rid of the damn watch without Mantis killing us. What better way than to pin it all on Diego Navarro and kill two birds with one stone?â
Riley laughs and gestures in the air. âHow in the hell do you plan on pulling that off?â
âEasy. Iâll break into Navarroâs house, plant the watch in his safe, and create a fake trail of chatter on his home network. Iâll build up just enough proof that Mantis will buy it, all while making sure they wonât believe Navarro when he denies everything.â
âAnd how will that help Brenden?â
âMantis will kill Navarro. Los Sombras will go to war with the Black Mantis, and at that point, they wonât give a shit about your brother anymore. Mantis will dismantle those fuckers.â I spread my arms, grinning like a lunatic. âThe enemy of my enemy and all that.â
She rubs her face with both hands and groans. âItâs crazy. There are so many ways that can go wrong.â
âYeah, youâre probably right, but if I pull this off, itâll be the perfect hack.â
âThe perfect what now?â
âNothing, never mind.â I go to her and pull her into my arms. âTrust me, baby. This can work. Itâs going to work.â
She sags into me. âI just donât like it, thatâs all. Just feels like too much can go wrong. You could get hurt, or Brenden could get targeted, and I just donât know what Iâll do if it blows up in our face.â
âI wonât let that happen.â
She leans back and a little smile slips onto her face. âDoes this mean you need me to pick some locks?â
âAbsolutely fucking not.â
She pouts and pulls back. âWhy? Come on, I did great last time. You said yourself, youâre the one that screwed up.â
âRiley, thereâs no way Iâm letting you get anywhere near this job.â
âWhat, youâre going to pull it off? The computer nerd?â
âI can do a lot more than break into security networks.â
âCan you pick a lock?â
I hesitate, then glare at her. âCanât be that hard.â
âGod, youâre clueless.â She chews a thumbnail like sheâs thinking. âFine, you convinced me. Iâll teach you.â
âWhat now?â
âYou need my help, right? I can teach you.â
âI never said I needed your help.â
âSure you do.â She waves a hand and starts pacing again. âYou donât want me going near that house, right? Well, I can accept that, so long as you let me contribute in other ways.â
âThatâs almost like real growth.â
âI know, right? Iâm really amazed with myself. Iâm not impulsively running off to break a window!â
âItâs incredible. Iâm so proud. But youâre not teaching me anything.â
âDonât be such a big baby.â She pats my cheek, beaming. âItâll be fun. I promise.â
She walks off, already making plans for how sheâs going to torture me, and I am very sure that itâs going to be anything but fun.
Only the planâs taking shape, and maybe itâs not perfect and thereâs a lot that could go wrong, but itâs a genuine path forward.
I just have to hope that Mantis is as bloodthirsty as I think they are.
