JAMES
âJAMES!â The sound of my name being yelled jolts me awake. Jackâs face is red with anger, and Anna and Becca are struggling to hold him back.
âWhatâs happening?â I mumble, sitting up.
âYou got my Anna pregnant!â he bellows.
I roll my eyes. âWell, yeah. The evidence is right there,â I say, pointing at Olivia who is, thankfully, still asleep.
âNo, you did it again! And the timing!â Jack shrieks.
I shake my head, confused. âWhat are you talking about?â
âAnna is pregnant, you idiot!â he yells again.
I turn to Anna, who looks like sheâs on the verge of breaking down.
âYouâre pregnant?â I ask her, completely taken aback.
âI donât know. But I am five days late,â she admits.
Oh, shit. And Jack just found out.
âWell, thereâs only one way to find out for sure,â I tell her, getting out of bed.
âYouâre not mad?â
I shrug. âOf course not. Iâd be happy to be a dad again,â I assure her.
âIâm probably not pregnant. Itâs not the first time Iâve been late,â she says, her voice shaky.
I raise an eyebrow. âYouâre never late, babe,â I remind her. I probably know her body better than anyone else. Well, except for her.
âHowâ¦,â she starts.
âA, we were together for years. Do you really think I donât know when your period is dueâor how regular it is?â I say, rolling my eyes.
âSo, not mad?â she asks again.
âWhy would I be mad? Itâs not like I've been holding back,â I say with a grin, making her blush.
âEnough!â Jack yells. He paces around the room. Becca shakes her head. âI really didnât need to hear this,â he mutters, sounding disappointed.
âAre you mad, Dad?â Anna asks, her lip trembling.
Jackâs face softens, Becca glares at him. Annaâs body sags. She looks like she might faint from the shock.
âFuck.â I jump up and rush over to her, hoping to catch her in time.
But Iâm too late. She crumples to the floor. I kneel down and pull her into my arms.
âItâs going to be okay. Iâm not going anywhere. Youâll see,â I whisper.
She buries her head in the crook of my neck and cries softly. I wrap my arms around her, feeling anything but angry.
Becca is practically yelling at Jackâscolding him like the child heâs acting like. I pick Anna up and carry her out of the room.
âWhere are you taking her?â Jack asks.
âOB-GYN ward. Iâm going to ask the nurse for a test before Anna decides that sheâs all alone, and a failure, once again. Thanks for that, by the way,â I say, glaring at him.
He swallows as Becca smacks him on the back of the head.
âIâm coming with you.â she says. âI need a test as well.â She turns to Jack and says fiercely, â~You~ just stay right here. I donât want you anywhere near me or my daughter.
âStay with Olivia, and donât you dare move or Iâll hit you where it really hurts.â
I walk, with Anna in my arms and Becca beside me, into the OB-GYN department. As we approach the reception, Becca speaks up.
âHeâs just shocked, Anna,â she says, rubbing Annaâs thigh.
âI know, Mom. It just hurts,â she replies, sobbing.
âIâll talk to him. But just know that even though heâs shocked, heâd never leave you. I guess itâs hard for him to see you all grown up like this.
âI struggle with it too, and I got to see you grow up. He didnât have that. Give him a minute. Not being here with me right now to find out whether Iâm really pregnant will be enough of a wake-up call.
âI know your dadâheâs devastated right now,â she assures Anna.
Anna nods, but all I can focus on right now is the bombshell she just dropped. âYouâre pregnant?â I ask, stunned.
âWhat? Iâm not too old to have another child,â she says as if that was what I was implying.
âThatâs not what I meant!â
She punches me on the shoulder. âI know,â she admits.
We reach the reception desk. âHi, we need to see a doctor,â Becca announces.
âWell, you have to have an appointment,â the receptionist tells her.
I sigh. âDo we really?â I ask her.
Her eyes meet mine. âJames Brown?â
âYes,â I confirm. âNow can we please see a doctor? It wonât take much of their time. We just need to confirm two pregnancies.â
The receptionistâs eyes widen as she looks from Anna, to Becca, and back to me.
âOf course,â she says, her cheeks turning pink.
âMom?â Anna says, stirring in my arms.
âYes, baby?â
âIs Dad really mad?â
Becca shakes her head. âIf I really am pregnant, heâll forget all about it,â she says with a laugh.
âAnd then heâll kill me,â I say, a bit worried.
âHe wonât,â Becca assures me.
The receptionist looks up from her computer. âOkay, so the doctor can see the three of you right now,â she says, raising her eyebrow.
The doctor comes out of her officeâand I recognize her immediately. âBrittany,â I sneer.
âJames?â Brittanyâs voice rings out, her surprise evident. I canât believe this high school queen bee turned into a doctor. Back in the day, she was the cheerleader everyone feared.
Her blond hair and blue eyes are the same as they were when we were teenagers. She was popular, but not for her personality. She slept with the entire football team, except for me.
She used to wear a ton of makeup in high school, but thatâs the only thing thatâs changed. I guess the cheerleader queen had a brain after all.
âAnna?â Brittanyâs gaze lands on the girl in my arms.
âYes, and Iâm Rebecca,â Becca interjects, her tone sharp. âCan we get this over with?â She shoots a glare at Brittany.
I shake my head, turning to face her. âIâm not letting either of you go into her office. She made Annaâs life hell in high school, and probably middle school too.â
Brittany swallows hard. âJames, that was a long time ago. Iâve changed,â she pleads, but Iâm not buying it.
Becca steps closer to me.
âYouâre Rebecca Johnson, right?â Brittany asks, her voice filled with awe.
Becca nods. âAnd youâre one of the girls who tormented Anna?â
Brittany stammers, âI...Iâve always admired you,â avoiding Beccaâs question.
Becca rolls her eyes, closing the distance between her and Brittany.
Brittany swallows again. âI never tormented anyone,â she insists, her voice shaky.
âMom, stop,â Anna interrupts, stepping out of my arms. I let her go and she straightens up.
âHi, Brittany,â she greets, extending her hand. âMy mom and I need pregnancy tests. Can you do that?â
Brittanyâs gaze flickers between Anna and Becca. âI didnât see that coming,â she admits.
âNeither did we. But we have other things to do, so can we just pee on a stick or something?â
Brittany shakes her head. âNo, Iâll draw some blood.â
âFine,â I mutter, taking Annaâs hand and leading her into the room.
Brittany draws blood from both of them and sends it to the lab. She also collects urine samples. Itâs just a precautionâweâll have the blood test results by tonight.
She dips a stick into each sample. Both come back pink.
âAnna, youâre definitely pregnant,â she confirms.
Annaâs crying stops instantly. âReally?â
I canât help but smile.
âIâm going to be a mom again?â Anna asks, her voice filled with disbelief.
âAgain?â Brittany questions.
âYes, we already have a daughter,â I explain.
Brittany types something into her computer. âAh, I see. Olivia Johnson-Brown. Sheâs a patient here?â
âYes, sheââ Anna starts, but breaks down crying again.
âSheâs been diagnosed with cancer,â I finish for her.
âOh, Iâm so sorry,â Brittany says, her voice filled with sympathy. âBut thereâs good news. Umbilical cord blood has been very effective in treating cancer.
âI can talk to Jasmineâmaybe we can adjust Oliviaâs treatment plan. It could also help with her chemo.â
âSo, having another baby could help my little girl?â Anna asks.
âYes.â
âWow,â she breathes, looking at me.
I can only smile.
~Iâm going to be a dad again.~
And this time, Iâll be there from the start.
âAs for you, Rebecca,â Brittany begins. âYouâre pregnant too.â
Becca rubs her forehead.
âDad is going to be so happy!â Anna exclaims. âIâm going to be a big sister!â
âYour dad is going to kill me!â I groan.
âNo, he wonât. If Jack Williams does anything but support this, heâll have to deal with me,â Becca declares.
