ANNA
We all spin around to see Dr. Oliver. âDr. Oliver?â I ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
âHello, Anna. We have the biopsy results,â he says, his tone professional.
âWeâd prefer if those who arenât immediate family could step out. This is a sensitive matter,â he adds.
I nod in understanding, and the others start to gather their belongings. This includes Becca and Jack, which makes my heart sink a little.
âCould you guys stay, please?â I ask, my voice shaking slightly.
James and I have each other, but we could use some extra support. And another set of ears.
âOf course, sweetheart,â Becca replies, taking Jackâs hand.
Becca pulls Jack into a hug and whispers something in his ear. I canât make out what sheâs saying from where Iâm sitting, but it sounds like, ~âSheâs not worth it.â~
~
Iâm not sure what that means, so I decide to let it go for now. Iâm just ready to hear whatâs going on with my daughter.
âAlright,â Dr. Oliver sighs.
Liz and Jim exit the room, promising to bring back coffee and some food. Weâll probably need it.
âThanks, guys.â
Once theyâre gone, Dr. Oliver starts to speak.
âYou might want to sit down,â he suggests. I settle Olivia on my lap, and Jack and Becca take their seats.
Becca and Jack sit next to each other, their hands intertwined. I hold onto Jamesâs hand while Jack rubs my back. His touch is comforting, and thatâs exactly what I need right now.
James is watching the doctors, bracing himself for the news.
~News that, deep down, we already know.~
~
âYesterday, I mentioned that I suspected it was cancer. I did say it was just a hunch, but it was a hunch I wanted to investigate.â
We all nod in understanding.
âIt turns out I was right. Iâm so sorry, Anna, JamesâOlivia has lung cancer.â
A tear slips down my cheek, but I canât seem to move.
âOh, God, no,â Becca sobs.
Jack stops rubbing my back and pulls Becca into his arms. I glance to my right. James is leaning back, his face wet with tears and his hands tangled in his hair.
He doesnât bother to wipe the tears away, and they just keep coming.
~Cancer. Itâs real. Itâs cancer.~
~
I hold Olivia close and try to hug Jamesâa hug we both desperately need. âWe knew this was a possibility,â I whisper in his ear.
He nods in response. âBut hearing it out loud...itâs different.â
âI know, honey, but we have to be strong. Strong for Olivia. We need her to get through this.â
~She has to get through this. She has to, and she will.~
~
He takes Olivia from me and holds her tight. She looks so small in his arms. But at the same time, she fits there perfectly.
âDaddy loves you, baby girl,â he says, his voice choked with tears as he buries his face in her neck.
âSsssh, Daddy. Iâll help. I love you too!â she says, as if her words can change everything.
Olivia climbs off Jamesâs lap and walks over to my parents, who are both crying.
âGigi?â she asks in a small voice.
âIâm okay, Olivia. Just a little sad,â she replies, trying to smile. But as soon as she looks at Liv, the tears start flowing again.
Liv reaches up so Becca can pick her up.
âCome here,â Liv says, wrapping her arms around Beccaâs neck.
âI love you, Gigi.â
âI love you too, baby girl.â
âOkay. So, what now?â I ask, trying to pull myself together.
Dr. Oliver steps to the side, revealing another doctor who had been standing quietly in the background.
âThis is Dr. Jasmine Jones. Sheâs an expert in pediatric oncology.â
I nod in acknowledgment.
âHello, Iâm so sorry for what your family is going through,â she begins, her voice gentle.
~Wow, sheâs really kind. She doesnât seem like a typical doctor.~
~
Jasmine is wearing a white doctorâs coat, but she still looks stunning. She has curly strawberry-blond hair and striking blue eyes.
She seems a bit thin to me, but Iâm on the curvy side, so maybe Iâm just biased. Sheâs beautiful.
âI didnât notice you earlier. Sorry,â I tell her.
âItâs okay. This is a big diagnosis,â she says. She gives me a comforting smile and looks around at all of us.
âJack?â she says, sounding surprised.
Jack is still hugging Olivia and Becca.
âHello, Jasmine,â he replies politely. He doesnât meet her gaze. Iâve never seen Jack like this before.
Iâve seen him shocked, crying, relieved, and happy. But this is something different, almost as if itâs hurting him in every possible way.
âWhat are you doing here?â she asks.
âIâm family,â he says, his voice firm but shaky. He doesnât seem to want to explain any further.
Jasmine just frowns. She shakes her head as she turns back to me.
âSo I took a look at the results. Oliviaâs cancer is treatable, but itâs going to be a tough battle,â she says, and I feel a wave of relief wash over me.
~Itâs treatable.~
âSheâll need chemo, and radiation on top of that. Once the cancer has shrunk, we should be able to remove it.â
âYou mean surgery?â I ask for clarification.
âYes. I wonât sugarcoat it, itâs going to be rough. And if we wait any longer, it will be too late.â
âWhen can we start?â
âGet it done as soon as you can,â she states, her tone firm.
âAlright, whatâs the first thing we need to do?â James inquires.
âOlivia will require a series of injections and IV medications. Weâll need to insert a port-a-cath. Itâll provide us with a constant access point and also ensure her mobility isnât restricted throughout the process.â
âSo, a surgery?â Jack questions, trying to regain his composure.
âYouâre familiar with a port-a-cath, Jack. And yes, it involves surgery,â she responds, her voice icy.
I can feel my anger starting to simmer.
~Clearly, thereâs some history between them. But I wonât let this day spiral into another drama. I just canât.~
I rise and position myself between the two of them, who are now locked in a fierce stare-down.
âAre you two going to have issues with each other?â I demand, my gaze shifting between a glaring Jack and a taken-aback Jasmine.
âBecause I wonât hesitate to find another doctor who can maintain professionalism with my family. Weâve been through hell in the past forty-eight hours. If you canât keep it together, Iâll find a doctor back in our hometown.â
âHometown?â
âYes, weâre from Seattle,â I inform her.
âWell, I wonât have any issues if he doesnât.â
Jack rises and attempts to sidestep me.
âWhatâs the matter?â I question.
âNothing, sweetheart. But having those two in the same room is a bit too much for me. I donât want to stir up troubleâlike you said, weâve had enough drama. Iâll return in a bit, okay?â
I give him a puzzled look. I want moreâI need to understand why heâs reacting this way. He vowed to stand by me, and he has, up until nowâ¦
âJasmine is my ex-wife,â he murmurs in my ear, the pain evident in his eyes.
Suddenly, it all clicks.
~Ex-wife? âCanât stand those two in the same room.â Did she cheat on him? With Oliver?~
âAlright. Will you be okay?â I ask him, pulling him into a comforting embrace.
âDo you want Mom to accompany you?â He looks at me, slightly taken aback, and I realize that I just referred to Becca as âMom.â The words slipped out before I could even process them.
He shakes his head. âIâll be alright,â he assures me. âI love you, Anna.â He exits the room.
âI love you too, Daddy,â I call out to him as he departs.
I know he wonât be alright. I can see it in his eyesâheâs on the verge of being consumed by his emotions if heâs left alone. I should knowâIâm exactly the same.
âMom, could you please go with him?â I request aloud. Becca looks up, startled.
âI understand, sweetheart,â she acknowledges with a nod. âIâll catch up with him before he takes off running again. He needs to be here, not out there,â she adds, managing a smile.
âHeâll return soon,â I assure her.
âJust let him wallow for a bit,â James suggests. âBe there for him, and donât let him retreat into his shell. Every time Anna does that, I lose her.â
âI know, Iâll find him. Heâs probably outside somewhere.â
I let out a sigh. âSo much for a drama-free day,â I mutter, causing James and Olivia to chuckle.
