Phillip and I are in Lincoln, enjoying the Nebraska home opener in Dannyâs new skybox.
âIsnât this awesome?â Danny says, looking down at the field.
âIt is.â I rub my belly. âEspecially since itâs so hot. Iâm not sure I could have taken the heat today. It will be so great to have both air-conditioning and our own bathroom. I swear, this babyâs goal in life is to get me to pee my pants. Itâs got to be a boy.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âBecause a girl wouldnât do that to another woman. A boy would think itâs hilarious.â
Danny laughs. âYou might be right about that.â He lowers his voice and leans closer to me. âGet this. Last night, Lori asked me if I might get traded to a different team eventually.â
I canât hide my shock. âWhat? Why did she ask that? I donât want you to get traded. Why would they trade you? Youâre doing great!â
âThat was my initial reaction. I couldnât believe sheâd even suggested it. And then she said she wished I had gotten drafted to somewhere more glamorous, like Chicago, New York, or Miami.â
âShe wants you away from us,â I say with a sad sigh.
âI think you might be right,â he says grimly as his phone vibrates. He reads a text. âHoly shit. Sheâs coming. Sheâs here.â
âLori decided to come to the game?â
âNo, .â
âJennifer Edwards? Why?â
âYesterday, when Lori decided not to come, I invited her. She didnât reply, so I assumed she wasnât coming, but she just texted me and said sheâs here. That she wanted to surprise me.â
âAre you surprised?â
âHoly shit. Yeah, I am. Promise me you wonât treat her like a movie star.â
âHave I ever treated you like a football star?â
âNo.â
âThen â¦â
âOkay, just make her feel at home.â He wipes off his forehead.
âYouâre sweating. Are you nervous?â
âYa think? Iâm a freaking wreck. I didnât think sheâd actually come. Do let me be alone with her.â He shakes his head. âUnless I tell you I want to be alone with her. No, no. Not even then. Even if I say I want to be, donât let me.â
âIs she still seeing Knox?â
âI think so.â
âIs she happy with him?â
âShe says itâs not serious. That sheâs always had a crush on him. But heâs, like, ten years older than she is. Way too old.â
âBut youâre just the right age?â
âShut up.â He shoves his hand through his hair, causing the front of it to stick up. âFuck.â
âDanny, calm down. Your parents just walked in.â
âThatâs about like getting caught with a boner. Shit. What am I supposed to tell them? I didnât think this through.â
âHave you ever thought anything through?â I canât help but laugh. âTell them the truth. That you met at a party in LA and invited her to Nebraska, so she could see what the fuss was all about.â
âYeah, thatâs perfect. I shouldnât be nervous. I mean, weâre just friends.â
âYes, youâre just friends.â
âWeâre just friends,â he repeats.
âDanny, would you like me to go meet her?â
âNo. No, I want to go. Iâll be right back.â
Danny escorts Jennifer into the skybox and introduces her to me, then Phillip, Nick, and our friend Blake, who is so cute. His nickname is Blakeness, as in Blake, His Royal Hotness.
âWell, hello,â Jennifer says, fanning her face and looking from Danny to Phillip to Nick to Blake. âWho knew this state was so full of hotties? I totally should have come here sooner.â
âYou should have,â Danny whispers to her.
Sheâs gracious to his parents, and she is a ball of energy. Sheâs funny, silly, and cute, just as Danny described.
After she gets introduced to everyone, she plops down next to me. âDanny told me all about you. That youâve been friends for a really long time. He also said you introduced him to his .â
I let out a breath. âYou get right to the subject, donât you?â
âI wasnât sure how youâd feel about me being here.â
âWell,â I say slowly, wanting to be tactful but still letting her know how I feel, âDanny says the two of you are friends. I happen to believe that you can never have too many .â
She nods slowly and then breaks out into a beaming grin. âI think Iâm going to like you. Oh, sweet, the gameâs starting. Letâs go get a seat.â
She sits front row between Phillip and Danny and is animatedly cheering.
She and Danny jabber up a storm about everything and nothing.
Phillip leans over and says to me, âI have a surprise for you. Why donât you come to the kitchen?â
That probably means he wants to talk to me about Jennifer.
But he walks straight to the fridge, pulls out a beer, and hands it to me.
âWhatâs this?â I ask.
âItâs a nonalcoholic beer.â
âI didnât know there was such a thing. Who would want that?â
âPeople who want the taste of beer without alcohol. I figured youâd like having a beer during the game.â
âThatâs sweet of you, Phillip,â I say, popping the top and taking a sip. âNot bad.â
âSo, whatâs going on down there?â He waves a finger toward Jennifer and Danny.
âThe game?â I ask, pretending like I donât know what heâs talking about.
He gives me a sigh.
âTheyâre friends.â
Phillip shakes his head. âYeah, thatâs what they keep saying, so why donât I believe them?â
âBecause they have a whole lot of sparks.â
âThatâs what worries me. Is it a coincidence that Lori isnât here, or was it planned?â
âLori chose not to come last night.â
âAnd when did Danny invite Jennifer?â
âWell, he invited her when they were in LA, but he texted her again last night and told her Lori wasnât coming. She didnât reply, and he was genuinely shocked when she showed up.â
âSo, did they hook up when he was in LA?â
âThey talked all night,â I tell him.
Phillip rolls his eyes. â
?â
âThatâs what he said.â
âDo you believe him?â
âYeah, I do.â
âInteresting,â Phillip says but then breaks into a wide smile as Jennifer runs around the box, high-fiving everyone when we score. âIs it bad that I really like her?â
I smack him. âYou like her because she said youâre hot.â
He grabs me around the waist and kisses me. âAre you jealous?â
âDo you want me to be?â
âDo I want you to go all raving bitch like Lori? No. Do I want you to fight for your man by sticking by his side and kissing him all day? Yes.â
âPhillip, I loved you before you got so hot.â
âGood point. Dang. Guess that means there are no movie-star girlfriends in my future.â
âNo way.â
âWhat about you? I know you and Lori havenât been close lately, but does her being here bother you?â
âA little, but what happens in their marriage isnât really our business. I just want him to be with whoever makes him happy.â
âYeah, me, too,â Phillip says, but a few short minutes later, he pulls Danny aside and talks to him privately.
Danny makes a last-minute decision to spend the night instead of driving home and begs us to join him.
Phillip calls Peggy, who has been watching Angel, to see if she would mind if we spent the night.
She told him that the little hellion ate a loaf of bread, bag and all. But she was sleeping, curled up on the couch next to her, and sheâd be happy to.
âSo, whatâs fun to do in this town?â Jennifer asks. âIs there, like, a water tower we can climb or a tractor we can ride? Wait! Can we go cow-tipping? Iâve never been on a real farm.â
âWhat about a hayrack ride?â Danny suggests with a smirk that insinuates the only thing he wants to ride is Jennifer.
Iâve been wondering how I really feel about all this.
Truth is, even though Lori has been a bitch to me lately, I didnât want to like Jennifer, out of some sort of leftover best-friend loyalty.
But I canât help myself. Sheâs fun and down to earth, and seems genuinely nice.
And, from what I can tell, she and Danny havenât crossed any lines. They act like buddies even though their chemistry is palpable.
âWe could call the Warren twins,â I suggest.
Thirty minutes later, weâre on a hayrack ride with a bunch of old friends, drinking beer.
Everyone adores Jennifer, and she likes that no one is treating her any differently than we would each other.
âJennifer is cool,â Phillip says, snuggling up with me in the hay.
âYeah, she is. I really like her. Although I still sort of feel like Iâm cheating. Danny told me that he and Jennifer have emotional intimacy.â
âSounds like us before we dated.â
âYeah, I thought the same thing.â
âItâs interesting,â Phillip says for about the tenth time today.
