âPut the flowers in the vase on the island,â the designer yells at me.
I scurry over and set the big bouquet of tulips where I was told while the designer takes a moment to look around.
âWow. This really looks great. Thank you, everyone, for all your help.â She gives me a hug. âAnd for finding the crew to make this happen. When we had to redo their electrical work, it really put us behind schedule. I didnât think this was possible.â
Mrs. Diamond yells out, âThey are leaving the hospital now!â
âOkay, everyone out!â I say to the crew that has been helping us put the finishing touches on the remodel.
Everyone quickly clears out, and I give Mrs. Diamond and Mrs. Mac hugs. âThank you for doing all this.â
âI canât wait to tell Danny and Lori how you put this all together,â Mrs. D says.
âUm, I, uh, donât really want them to know.â
âWhy not?â
âI just donât. I didnât do it to get a thank-you or any praise. I just wanted them to come home and be able to relax with their baby.â
Mrs. D gives me another hug. âIf thatâs what you want, dear,â she says, âmy lips are sealed.â
âCome on, Mrs. Mac. Letâs get out of here.â
On the walk across the yard to my house, Mrs. Mac questions me, âWhy wouldnât you want them to know what you did for them? I mean, what an amazing gift.â
âLori and I havenât been as close as we once were,â I confide.
âI noticed that when you were up for her shower. Was she mad at you then?â
âI think sheâs just been upset in general. She and Danny have had a rough time. Both with the pregnancy and their marriage.â
âOh, thatâs too bad. Pregnancy can be tough on a relationship. Doug and I were married for a very short time before we had Ashley, and it wasnât easy. Sadly, it gets worse once the baby is born.â
âIt does? Danny thinks things will go back to normal now that the baby is here.â
Mrs. Mac lets out a full-on belly laugh. âOh, wow. Thatâs funny. Danny is in for a rude awakening. Normal is now a relative term. It wonât be anything like when you were dating or first married. Those days are over.â
And this worries me.
