Chapter 17: Our Family

When it all falls apartWords: 2923

Two years had passed since the accident that nearly took everything from them. The road to recovery had been long, painful, and filled with moments of doubt, but Lingling had fought her way back, just as Orm had begged her to. And now, standing on the wooden deck of their home overlooking the endless sea, she knew every battle was worth it.

Orm, now seven months pregnant, was sitting on the cushioned outdoor lounger, sipping on coconut water as the golden retrievers—Mochi, Char Siu, and Tofu—played in the sand. The warmth of the late afternoon sun kissed her skin, and a gentle ocean breeze rustled her loose dress.

Lingling stepped behind her, wrapping her arms around Orm's shoulders and resting her chin on her wife's head.

"You should rest," Lingling murmured.

Orm smiled, placing her hand over Lingling's. "I will, but only if you sit with me."

Lingling complied, sitting beside Orm and pulling her close. She traced slow circles over Orm's belly, feeling the little movements of the life growing inside.

"She's kicking again," Orm chuckled, guiding Lingling's hand to feel the tiny thumps beneath her skin.

Lingling's heart swelled. "She's going to be strong, just like her Mama," she said, pressing a kiss to Orm's temple.

Orm leaned into her touch, sighing contentedly. "I can't believe we made it here."

Lingling nodded. "Me neither."

Their home by the beach was everything they had dreamed of a peaceful sanctuary where they could finally live without fear of losing each other. It had taken time for Lingling to heal, both physically and emotionally, but with Orm by her side, she had learned how to live again.

The days following her awakening had been some of the hardest. Relearning how to walk, regaining her strength, and confronting the guilt of nearly leaving Orm alone. But Orm never let her spiral, never let her feel like a burden. She had been patient, loving, and unwavering in her belief that Lingling would come back to her completely.

And she had.

"You never gave up on me," Lingling whispered, intertwining their fingers.

Orm turned her head, gazing at her with so much love it nearly took Lingling's breath away. "How could I? You're my whole world, Ling."

Tears stung Lingling's eyes, but this time, they weren't from sadness. "I love you."

Orm smiled, leaning in to press a soft kiss against Lingling's lips. "I love you more."

They stayed like that, wrapped in each other, watching the sun begin its descent over the horizon. Their past was filled with pain, but their future is and will be full of love, laughter, and a life they had both fought so hard for.

And in just two more months, they would welcome their daughter into the world, anew chapter in their story, a reminder that fate could be rewritten with love.

As the golden retrievers barked happily in the distance and the waves crashed against the shore, Lingling knew with absolute certainty this was their happy ending.
