Chapter 2: Chapter I

My name is Skyler. Skyler Sawyer to be precise. I'm 22 years old and an architect. I live in San Francisco, California.

I was driving home after a long day of work. I was tired but it would be another while before I was home. Traffic was hell and even on a lucky day it still took me an hour to drive home from my office.

Finally I arrived home. Two hours in traffic was definitely enough. I dropped my keys on the counter and plopped on the couch.

"Took you long enough." Says a voice next to me.

I roll my eyes. My best friend and roomate Cristy. We have been best friends since high school. She's always been there for me. Through good and through bad.

I ignore her comment.

"You didn't think to bring food did you?" She asks.

I sigh.

"No I didn't. I thought my roomate would actually cook for once." I say raising my voice.

"Wow, chill. No need to get mad. I'll see what we have." Cristy says getting up.

She goes to the kitchen and looks in the pantry.

"How about...mac and chees?"

"Whatever." I respond.

To be honest I really couldn't care less. As long as I had something to eat I was happy.

I took the tv remote and zapped through the channels. I stopped on the news channel. Something about a forest fire. At first I wasn't really interested, then something behind the reporter caught my eye. It was a quick flash. In the blink of an eye it was gone.

"Did you see that?" I asked Cristy, even though I knew there was no way she could've ever seen it from the kitchen.

"See what?" She asked.

For some reason I kept staring at the screen. Maybe hoping it would come back.

"N-never mind..." I say confused.

Was it really there or did I just imagine it?

Surely I imagined it. I'm tired. It must be that.

After another 15 minutes Cristy hands me a plate with some mac and cheese and sits next to me with her own plate.

"So how was your day?" Cristy asks.

"Oh, you know the usual." I respond, putting another fork filled with mac and cheese in my mouth.

"The usual?"

She raises a brow.

"What?" I ask.

"How should I know what you do all day?" She says.

I roll my eyes, but a smile comes to my face. Classic Cristy.

"Well first I went to starbucks and picked up my usual coffee order. After that I went to the office, made a small version of the sketch I showed you last week. Then I did some paperwork and that's it."

"Sounds boring." She says stuffing her mouth with mac and chees.

"Except for making the mini version of the house, it was." I confirm.

"What did you do?"

"Work from home."

"Right, probably watch Netflix all day." I laugh.

"Not my fault my boss let's me stay at home." She shrugs.

Normally when she wasn't at home she works as the assistant of some CEO. I don't really know who. Guess I should ask sometime.

"How do you even get your work done?"

"Magic." She whispers.

"Has to be." I shrug.

After watching some tv for another while and just talking to Cristy we decide it's about time to go to bed, since we both have work to do in the morning.

"Night Sky." Cristy says while walking to her room.

"Night." I respond.

I get changed and brush my teeth. When I'm done I lay underneath the warm and comfortable covers of my bed.

For some reason I can't seem to fall asleep. The flash behind the reporter keeps replaying in my head.

'I imagined it. There's no way it could be real.' I say to myself.

Suddenly I hear the sound of cars colliding against one another. Quickly I run out of my room and straight to the window.

Right in front of me I see another car hit the two already in front of him, making a chain reaction.

Again I see a flash. I rub my eyes.

'This is not real. It's some weird dream...right?'

Cristy doesn't seem to be awake. She would've got up if she was.

The lights start flickering. I feel a strong presence nearby but I don't know who it belongs to.

Suddenly I hear a knock on the door. I quickly pass through the kitchen and take a frying pan with me. Along with my new weapon I slowly walk to the door.

Being prepared for anything I take the doorknob and open the door. No one's there. I look around in the corridor. Nothing. Just as I'm starting to let my guard down it happens...

A bright flash and everything goes black.
