Tasmin showed up that night.
She hadnât called. Texted. She showed up, and as soon as I let her in, âWhy wasnât I invited?â
I frowned. âHere?â
She dropped her bag on the couch, and waved her phone in the air. âThis is what thatâs for. To call me. To invite me. Youâre going to a bar? You call a friend.â
Oh.
âToday wasnât about you.â
âFriends, Mara. Friends. Do I need to spell it out to you? Youâre going somewhere for a social activity, you call your other friends and let them know. Wanna know where I was? Taking care of Race because heâs sick. Guess where I wouldâve loved to have gone?â
âTo the bar?â
Her hands went wide and moved in an arch. âYes! Youâre getting it now.â
I shut the door. âYou want me to invite you the next time I go to the bar without your boyfriend?â
âNo, but let me know. Iâm fun. Iâm game for anything. Literally. Or, well maybe not literally anything, but for a lot. And if youâd known Race was sick, then I couldâve told you how heâs been a baby all day long.â She went to my kitchen, and opened the fridge. âHe swears itâs food poisoning, but between you and me and everyone else, heâs hungover. He and his roommate went out with some guys from one of his classes.â
âGood to know.â I watched as she helped herself to my juice, then my rum, and held it up to me.
She asked, âYou want a drink?â
I had to smile, a little. âIâm good.â
âGood.â She brought it over and plopped down on the couch. âOkay. I heard Cruz beat the shit out of Kyle Ruiz, and it was over you. Tell me the truth and Iâll tell you the rumors going around. Some of them are a doozy, but thatâs why you have me now. Iâll weed out the truly insane ones, like the fact that you and Ruiz have a secret child that your mother kidnapped, and Cruz thinks itâs his.â
âI could see why heâd be upset.â
She snorted, sipping her drink. âMe too, but you donât need to hear that one. Sit, Daniels. Spill. Weâre besties and itâs time you start accepting it.â
I sat. I spilled. I did not spill everything, but it felt good. I had to admit that.
Then, when she was leaving, she offered, âI can go downstairs and let Sky and Z know the truth, if you want? Youâre prime gossip channel material, and trust me, youâre going to need a few of us on your side. If we know the deets, we can shut down the absolutely crazy pants ones.â
âIâm okay.â
My phone began ringing after that, and Taz gave a wave before leaving. âOkay. Offerâs always there. Fair warning. Iâm going to text you tomorrow. You will have to respond to it. Also what friends do. They text about just general stuff. Rarely are threats involved. Real threats. Take note.â
I was answering as she shut the door. âHey.â
It was Cruz. âYou got back okay?â
I settled back down on my couch, a blanket over my lap. My computer was still next to me, but since Tazâs arrival, I hadnât reopened it. âI did. Howâs your head?â
âAll fine.â
âThatâs good.â
âYeahâ¦â
I had to laugh. âWe suck at phone calls.â
He laughed. âI was just thinking that. Why are we doing this again?â
âYou know why.â My stomach clenched, and my phone dropped.
âWeâre doing the actual friend route? Like the kind where we talk and share how our day went? Shit like that?â
I was playing with the edge of my blanket. âI guess. Taz was just here and said kinda the same thing, but I donât really do this with anyone. I typically donât trust anyone for this stuff.â
He was quiet. âThatâs kinda messed up.â
I sighed, sinking lower in the couch. âI know. I blame my mom.â That was half of a joke, half not.
âHas she reached out again?â
âNo. I mean, yeah, but sheâs blocked. A weird number started calling this last week. They wonât leave a message. I mean, they do, but itâs just heavy breathing.â
âThatâs creepy. Could be her other friend?â
âCould be anyone.â I went back to playing with the edge of my blanket. âHowâs your sister? Your mom?â
âUh, theyâre good.â A brief pause. âSorry, not used to being asked about them either.â
âIs this new for both of us?â
âI think so. I mean, I never had a girlfriend in high school. If I had sex, it was just that, you know. And my friends, we talk about hockey or stupid shit. Sometimes they ask about you, but not in a nosey way. They arenât like that.â
âI know. I appreciated how they all were quiet about me coming over. That doesnât always happen.â
âA lot of girls like sex. Guys too. No one should be judging.â
âYou saying that is probably part of the reason you and I were doing what we were doing.â
âWere?â
My breath halted in the middle of my chest. âI mean⦠You know what I mean.â
âRight.â He didnât sound like he did.
I sat up. âLook, with my mom how she is, I lived life keeping two worlds separate. My home life and my social life. That shattered in January, and now thereâs a weird mix where people in one world know about the other and I canât change that. Iâd run like hell in the past if that had happened, but Iâm not this time. I canât, but I also donât want to. I think, I I need to do this.â
âMara.â He said my name quietly.
âI just donât want to go back to bad habits, and you know, itâs new to me and I want to be cautious. I know it doesnât make sense, but you know about my mom. Youâve met her. Zeke knows about her. He has my back. Taz, which is new. You. This is a big step for me. I feel weird even trying to explain this.â
âYou donât have to.â
âI know, butââ
âFor real. You donât have to. I get it.â
I was almost shredding my blanket, picking at it. âThe original agreement was that if weâre having sex with each other, neither of us has sex with anyone else. Iâm changing that so if you want to, you know. You can. With someone else.â
He got quiet, again.
I clamped my eyes shut, so tight. Waiting.
âI have no plans for that, but⦠Thank you. I guess?â
Okay. We werenât a couple. That had never been on the table, so I got it. I understood. He was keeping his options open. Thatâs what he was doing. Totally made sense.
âRight.â From me.
âYeah.â From him. Still quiet.
âOkay. Iâm going to go. Study. I wouldnât be surprised if we had a surprise quiz in abnormal psych tomorrow.â
âMe too.â
I stared at my phone, holding it.
I didnât end the call. I stared at my phone.
Twenty seconds later, he ended it from his side.
There was that.
