CHAPTER THREE

The morning sunlight filtered through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow over the bustling room. Joe moved with practiced ease, flipping the last of the pancakes onto a plate as the scent of maple syrup and sizzling bacon hung in the air.

Bloom, sitting in her high chair, gurgled happily as she reached for the spoon he'd left on the table. He grinned and leaned over to place a kiss on her little head before setting the spoon in her hand, which she promptly dropped with a giggle.

"Having fun?" Joe asked, glancing over at Blossom, who was sipping her coffee and watching the scene with a soft smile.

She was dressed in a cozy sweater, her hair falling in waves over her shoulders. The exhaustion from last night had faded, replaced by the glow of early morning contentment. Joe felt a sense of peace settle over him as he observed the two of them. For a fleeting moment, everything felt right in the world.

The doorbell rang, breaking the serenity of the moment. Joe's brow furrowed as he wiped his hands on a towel and walked to the front door. When he opened it, Trinity stood there, her eyes sparkling with excitement and a wide grin plastered across her face.

"Good morning, Joe!" Trinity said, pushing her sunglasses up her nose and stepping into the hallway. "Is my little Godbaby awake and ready for her big adventure today?"

Joe laughed, a deep, rich sound that echoed through the hallway. "Morning, Trinity. Come on in. Bloom's all ready for whatever you've got planned."

Trinity's eyes softened when she spotted Bloom, who had managed to turn her spoon into a toy, banging it against the high chair with uncoordinated enthusiasm. The sight made her laugh, a light and carefree sound that seemed to breathe life into the house.

"Oh, my goodness, she's getting so big," Trinity said as she moved over to Bloom, who reached out with a tiny hand and babbled excitedly. "Are you ready to meet Santa, little miss Bloom?"

Blossom stood up and walked over to Trinity, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "Joe's been the one holding down the fort this morning. He's practically a pro at this parenting thing," she said, casting a teasing glance at him.

Trinity's eyes flicked to Joe, a mix of surprise and approval crossing her features. "Well, it looks like Bloom's in good hands then," she said, turning her gaze back to the baby. "But speaking of Santa, we need Joe to come with us today."

Joe's smile faltered a bit. "Oh? I wasn't planning on going to the mall today. You know how chaotic it gets around Christmas," he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

Trinity tilted her head, a playful smirk on her lips. "That's exactly why you should come. It'll be fun, I promise. Plus, Bloom needs a strong, handsome man there to protect her from the Santa crowds."

Blossom chimed in, taking Trinity's side. "It'll be good for you, Joe. You've been so kind to us, and it's the first time we're really doing something like this. It's Bloom's first Christmas. Don't you want to see her meet Santa for the first time?"

Joe met her eyes, seeing the hope and excitement dancing in them. The past few hours had been a whirlwind, filled with new routines and unexpected challenges, but also with moments that had felt just right.

Spending time with Bloom, seeing her giggles and sleepy smiles, had pulled something out of him that he didn't even know was missing. It was the same something he now saw in Blossom's eyes, a sense of belonging and warmth.

"Alright, alright," Joe said, a soft laugh escaping him. "I'll come. But only because I don't want to disappoint the baby."

Trinity threw her hands up in mock victory. "Perfect! Then it's settled." She reached into her bag and pulled out a small red bow, placing it gently on Bloom's head. "There, now you're ready for the big guy. And, Joe, you're going to need this." She handed him a small Santa hat, grinning as he took it with an exaggerated sigh.

Blossom and Joe shared a knowing look as Trinity bounced with excitement. He knew she was right; a day out with the three of them would be exactly what they all needed. With a few quick adjustments, they were all bundled up and out the door, making their way to Trinity's car.

The drive to the mall was filled with chatter and laughter. Trinity's playlist played softly, a mix of classic Christmas songs and upbeat pop that set the tone for the day. Bloom sat between Blossom and Joe in the back seat, her wide eyes taking in the world around her as the city whizzed by. She cooed and kicked her little legs, a tiny hand reaching out to grasp at Joe's fingers.

"Careful, Joe, or she's going to have you wrapped around her finger in no time," Trinity said, her voice laced with humor as she glanced at Joe through the rearview mirror.

Joe chuckled, a warm, genuine sound. "Hey, I'm not complaining. She's got great taste in people."

The mall was a bustling sea of holiday shoppers, the air thick with the scent of cinnamon and peppermint. The line to see Santa stretched out past the main atrium, and the festive décor brought a touch of magic to the otherwise hectic space. Trinity led the way, weaving through the crowd with the confidence of someone who knew the lay of the land.

Blossom looked around, wide-eyed, as they settled into the line. The glow of Christmas lights reflected in her eyes, making them sparkle like stars. Joe stood beside her, his attention split between the baby and the people around them. Bloom's tiny hands were outstretched, her small fingers curling as if she were reaching for the twinkle lights overhead.

"I think she loves Christmas, doesn't she?" Blossom said, her voice soft as she watched her daughter.

Joe smiled, the warmth spreading through his chest. "I think she's going to be just like her mom—full of wonder and magic."

Blossom's cheeks flushed, and she looked at him, surprised by his comment. "That's a nice thing to say," she whispered, her voice catching in her throat.

Trinity caught the exchange and raised her eyebrows. "Oh, come on, you two. Don't go getting all sentimental on me. We've got Santa to visit."

Joe let out a small laugh, the sound making Blossom's heart flutter. It was strange how natural everything felt, like they had known each other for much longer than they had. The tension that had been there at the beginning had dissolved, replaced with something more familiar.

"Alright, ladies, let's do this," Joe said, scooping Bloom into his arms as they reached the front of the line.

The Santa Claus seated on his velvet throne was older, with a twinkle in his eye that seemed to know all the secrets of the holiday season.

Santa's face broke into a smile as he spotted Bloom in Joe's arms. "Well, if it isn't the most beautiful little girl I've seen all season! Come here, sweetheart," he said, reaching for Bloom.

Joe hesitated for a second, glancing at Blossom, who nodded encouragingly. He gently transferred the baby to Santa, watching her big eyes widen with both wonder and apprehension.

The photographer snapped a few pictures, and in that moment, Joe felt the magic of it all. He could feel the weight of the last few days, the changes, and the possibility of new beginnings.

With Trinity and Blossom smiling beside him, he realized he didn't just want to be a part of this moment—he wanted to be there for many more.

When Santa handed Bloom back, she was cooing, a small smile playing on her lips. Joe's heart swelled as he tucked her close again, feeling the warmth of her tiny body against his.

"Ready to go get some hot chocolate?" Trinity said, nudging Joe with her elbow as she led the way toward the food court.

"Absolutely," Joe said, smiling as he followed, with Blossom and Bloom right behind him. The day was far from over, but it was already shaping up to be one they would all remember.

For Joe, it was a reminder that sometimes the best things came in the most unexpected packages. For Blossom, it was a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, she wasn't as alone as she once thought.

And for Bloom, it was the start of a lifetime of memories, love, and laughter.
