Chapter 42: 41.

The Empath And The Narcissist | JJKWords: 18358

In the cozy living room, after lunch, as the daylight begins to fade, you find comfort resting your head against Hyeyeon's belly, her gentle pats and the way she plays with your hair soothing your tired soul. This simple, friendly touch feels like a warm embrace after the long, turbulent journey you've been on. Surrounded by friends and the quiet hum of a movie, you drift off into a peaceful sleep, a much-needed escape from recent chaos.

The movie ends, and the room grows quieter, but you're still sound asleep, lost in dreams on the couch. Miyeon and Taehyung step out for a breath of fresh air and to mend their broken bonds, while Jimin and Hyeyeon prepare to visit a wedding venue. You, however, remain in dreamland, cradled by the comfort of Hyeyeon's presence still.

"Jungkook-ssi," Hyeyeon softly calls out to Jungkook, who's just coming out of his room, dressed casually in a tank top.

"Could you keep an eye on Y/N for me? She tends to move around in her sleep and might accidentally roll off the couch. She's really out of it," she explains, her voice filled with concern as she carefully tries to slide out from under you without disturbing your slumber.

Jungkook pauses, his gaze shifting between Hyeyeon and you, taking in the request. Meanwhile, Jimin and Hyeyeon exchange a quick glance, a silent communication passing between them, perhaps acknowledging the subtle dynamics at play. Hyeyeon knew what she was doing by requesting that to Jungkook.

"Sure" "I had some work to catch up on, but I can stay here on the couch with her until she wakes," Jungkook agrees, his tone accommodating. He then heads to the kitchen to grab a snack, casting occasional glances your way, ensuring you're still sleeping soundly as Jimin and Hyeyeon make their way out.

The evening gradually darkens outside, marking the rising evening. Jungkook finds a spot on the couch, his presence a quiet watch over you. The room is filled with the soft clicks of his fingers against the laptop keyboard as he works, the ambient noise a gentle reminder of his closeness. This quiet moment of proximity, even in silence, offers a subtle connection between you two, a peaceful coexistence that stands in contrast to the complexities of your shared past and the uncertainties of the future.

After an hour, Jungkook heads to his bedroom, to grab some paperwork soon before the quiet of the evening is shattered by the sudden, jarring ring of your phone on the table, a sound that pierces the peaceful atmosphere and jolts you from your sleep.

Disoriented and startled, you wake up and react instinctively, your movements abrupt and panicked, leading to a sudden loss of balance. In a moment that seems to stretch and contract all at once, you find yourself tumbling off the couch, a victim to gravity and surprise.

The fall is swift but your collision with the coffee table is anything but gentle. Your arm strikes the hard surface of the glass table with a force that ignites a sharp, searing pain, a cry of distress involuntarily escaping your lips as the impact reverberates through you. "Ah!!" The chaos is compounded as the phone continues its relentless ringing in the background of your winces.

In his room, Jungkook, momentarily distracted by the task of retrieving some paperwork, is caught off guard by the sounds of distress originating from the living area. The panic in your voice acts as a quick call to action, propelling him with a sense of urgency he hadn't anticipated needing in the quiet of his home.

Rushing to your side, he finds you on the floor, a mix of confusion and pain etched across your features as you cradle your injured arm. "Y/N, are you okay? What's wrong?" he asks, his voice thick with concern as he kneels beside you, his eyes scanning for the extent of your injury, his mind racing to assess how he can alleviate your pain.

In your disoriented state, overwhelmed by the sudden onslaught of pain, you cry out for the most primal source of comfort you know, "Omma," the word a reflexive plea for the maternal soothing you yearn for in this moment of vulnerability.

Your cry, raw and filled with the innocence of a child's call for their mother, strikes a chord in Jungkook, sending a jolt of protectiveness through him. Witnessing you in such distress, especially under his watch, fills him with a heavy sense of guilt and helplessness. He had been tasked with a simple duty—to ensure your safety as you slept—and in this, he feels he has failed badly.

Despite the chaos, Jungkook's focus narrows to you, his immediate concern to provide whatever aid and comfort he can. The paperwork he had gone to retrieve is forgotten, his entire being centered on addressing your pain, on rectifying this moment of failure. As he gently tries to assess your injury, offering words of comfort, the incident becomes an unintended bridge, drawing you closer through a shared moment of vulnerability and care. This unexpected accident, while painful and startling, serves to peel back layers of complexity in your relationship, revealing the depth of concern and care that lies beneath the surface.

Jungkook, acting swiftly, lifts you gently from the floor, ensuring you're settled back onto the couch with a tenderness that belies his usual stoicism. As he kneels beside you, his concern is palpable, each movement calculated to offer comfort without causing further distress.

"Okay, let me see it," he softly insists, aiming to assess the injury with the care of someone who's found themselves unexpectedly cast in the role of a caretaker.

However, his attempt to take your hand inadvertently leads him to grasp precisely where the pain is most acute, causing an immediate and sharp reaction from you. You instinctively swat his hand away, a reflex born out of the sudden spike of pain. This reaction is accompanied by a sharper wince and tears that start to gather in your eyes, a clear testament to the intensity of your discomfort.

Jungkook, realizing his mistake, recoils slightly, his face a mask of regret. He instantly understands that his well-intentioned attempt to help has only served to exaggerate your pain. In this moment, he opts for patience, recognizing that your immediate need is for space to process the pain and calm down on your own terms. The urgency to help is still there, but it's tempered by a newfound caution, a silent promise to be more mindful of your comfort and boundaries.

This incident, though small in the grand scheme of things, reveals a deeper layer of Jungkook's character. His willingness to pause, to not push beyond what you're comfortable with in your moment of vulnerability, speaks volumes. It's a quiet acknowledgment of his role in your pain, however accidental, and a silent vow to do better, to be better, for you.

Determined to find some relief, you push yourself off the couch, ignoring the throbbing pain in your arm as you make your way toward the kitchen for some ice. "Y/N, wait," Jungkook calls out, concern lacing his voice as he quickly gets to his feet to follow you. Your frustration bubbles to the surface, the pain and the day's misfortunes weighing heavily on you. "Why do these things keep happening to me?" you mutter under your breath, a curse escaping your lips as you reach into the freezer for the ice.

Jungkook, hovering anxiously around you, blames himself for the accident. "It's my fault, I was supposed to watch over you," he admits, guilt evident in his tone. He makes several attempts to examine your hand, but you're not having any of it.

"I am not a child, Jungkook," you snap, your patience worn thin by the pain and his overbearing concern. Your sharp gaze, filled with frustration and pain, sends a clear message to Jungkook that you're not in the mood for any further discussion.

Despite your protests, Jungkook's worry only deepens. "We need to go to the hospital," he insists, already moving toward his room to grab a shirt and your coat.

Your immediate reaction is to resist his insistence on accompanying you. "I need to go to the hospital, not us. You are not coming with me," you stress, emphasizing the distinction to assert your independence.

However, Jungkook halts in his tracks, turning to face you with a look that brooks no argument. "I am getting your coat, and we are going to the hospital, together," he declares, his voice leaving no room for debate.

Caught off guard by his authoritative stance, you pause, locking eyes with him for a moment. Despite your irritation and desire to handle this on your own, Jungkook's unwavering determination is clear. You reluctantly continue to apply ice to your hand, recognizing, perhaps grudgingly, that his concern comes from a place of genuine care. In this moment, the dynamic between you shifts, a silent acknowledgment of the complex bond that continues to draw you together despite the challenges you face.

Wrapped awkwardly in your coat, unable to properly don it due to your injured arm, you step out into the cool air, the tension between you and Jungkook palpable. You stride ahead, deliberately distancing yourself from him, a silent protest against his presence. Your pace is swift, a clear indication of your desire to put physical space between you and Jungkook, to the point where you bypass the car entirely, your determination not to be in close quarters with him overriding practicality.

Jungkook, trailing behind, oscillates between frustration and concern, his sighs marking his growing agitation. Yet, he persists, following at a respectful distance, acknowledging your need for space even as he worries about your safety. "Slow down, Y/N, you're going to trip," he cautions, his voice laced with concern that goes unheeded. Your frustration with him bubbles over as you ignore his words, erupting in a heated exchange that breaks the strained silence between you.

"Why are you so mad at me?" he finally asks, unable to mask his frustration any longer.

Your response is swift and charged with emotion, a raw expression of the pain you feel. "Because you are pretending to care for me after putting me through all that misery and finally abandoning me," you shout back, the words slicing through the air between you. It's a moment before the physical distance closes abruptly, Jungkook's grip on your arm spinning you around to face him, his hands firmly grasping your arms as he draws you closer. The intensity in his eyes mirrors the tumult of emotions swirling within you both.

"I am not the one who abandoned you this time, but you are the one who chose to go away," he counters sharply, his words a mixture of accusation and pain.

"And you let me go, very easily," you retort, your voice steady despite the surprise at his sudden closeness. His reaction is immediate, his glare intensifying as the words hang heavily in the air between you.

Jungkook's grip remains firm, though his voice softens as he attempts to explain his actions, a mix of frustration and regret evident in his tone. "I only let you go because I was angry about all those things you said to me, Y/N," he admits, the agitation still present but controlled. His words, meant to bridge the gap between you, only serve to fuel your anger further, bringing forth a torrent of pent-up emotions and grievances.

"I talked back once, and you just let me go. What about the times you yelled at me, ordered me, controlled me, and put me through physical and mental trauma?" you retort, your voice rising with each word, the pain and betrayal you felt pouring out unrestrained. "It wasn't once but several times!" you emphasize, the volume of your voice drawing attention from the street, highlighting the depth of your anguish and the breakdown of trust that had once bound you together.

"I trusted you with all my life for months, for years!!" Your shout pierces the air, a testament to the betrayal you feel, severing what little connection remained. "I don't trust you anymore, I don't even need you to worry about me anymore," you declare, your words cutting deep. "If I die, don't even care to show up at my funeral," you add, pushing him away with all the force you can muster, not caring about the excruciating pain shooting through your wrist as a result.

Jungkook, taken aback by the intensity of your emotions, takes a step toward you, a gesture of concern that you immediately rebuff with a gesture of your own. Turning away, you take a step forward, only to pause and turn back, driven by a need to make your feelings unequivocally clear.

"You think I am in trouble because of you, because I am related to you. Well, you know what, I chose to be with you all that time, so it's totally on me. Don't worry about me, Jungkook. Worry about me hating you even more. You fucking ruined me. Not just by putting me in trouble but also fucking with my heart and mind," you say, each word laden with pain and accusation.

With that, you turn and walk away, leaving Jungkook behind, a mix of emotions swirling within him as he watches you go. The distance between you grows with each step, a physical manifestation of the emotional chasm that now lies between you. Your departure marks not just a physical separation but a pivotal moment in your relationship with Jungkook, one where the hurt and misunderstandings have reached a point where reconciliation seems distant, if not impossible.

It took a moment for Jungkook to absorb the weight of your words, the raw anger and frustration behind them. He was taken aback by the intensity of your hatred, evident even as he clenched his jaw and swallowed hard. Despite this, he continued to follow you, this time positioning himself to lead, though his eyes never left you.

Upon reaching the hospital's emergency room, a nurse immediately greeted you and summoned a doctor.

"How did this happen?" the doctor inquired, examining your injury with a practiced eye.

Before you could respond, Jungkook interjected, "She fell off the couch while asleep." His concern was palpable, but so was your irritation as you shot him a glare for answering on your behalf.

"And you are her...?" the doctor probed, noting Jungkook's prompt responses and evident worry.

"No one," you snapped before Jungkook could reply, your voice icy.

"I want him out of here," you declared, locking eyes with the doctor.

"I'm not going anywhere," Jungkook countered firmly, his stance unyielding.

"Fine, I'll leave then" Exasperated, you threatened to leave instead as you stand up, frustration boiling over.

"Why are you being so stubborn since you woke up?" he questioned, his frustration mirroring your own.  "Doctor, please check for any concussions. She might have hit her head when she fell," Jungkook insisted, his tone serious, leaving no room for humor.

His earnestness clashed with your growing anger.  "How dare you," you hissed, pushing against him, though he barely moved.

"You two," the doctor interjected, his voice cutting through the tension. "Nurse, please take him to fill out the forms. And you," he turned to you with a firm directive, "sit down."

Complying reluctantly, Jungkook followed the nurse, casting a final worried glance your way before disappearing from sight. You, meanwhile, forced yourself back onto the examination bed, the cold, hard surface a stark reminder of the reality of your situation. The doctor's efficient movements as he prepared for further examination were a blur, your mind elsewhere, tangled in the web of emotions that the day had spun around you.

The wait for Jungkook to return felt interminable, the chitter chatter in the background of the room amplifying the turmoil within you. When he finally re-entered, the look of concern was still etched deeply into his features, his eyes searching yours for any sign of forgiveness or understanding. But you couldn't meet his gaze, couldn't give him the comfort of knowing you might still care.

The return of the doctor with your X-ray results momentarily shifted the atmosphere in the room. As he began to examine your wrist more closely, his fingers inadvertently pressed a bit too firmly against the tender spot, eliciting a sharp wince from you. "Could you be more gentle, please?" you implored, the discomfort evident in your voice.

Jungkook's protective instincts kicked in instantly. He stepped closer to the doctor, his presence imposing. "Could you be more careful?" His tone was firm, yet laced with concern for your well-being.

"Jungkook," you intervened, tugging gently at his arm with your uninjured hand, trying to diffuse the building tension.

The doctor, sensing the heightened emotions, adjusted his approach. "Mr. Jeon, I understand you're worried, but please allow me to do my job," he stated more diplomatically, a marked shift from the earlier tension. His words were polite yet firm, surprisingly changed tone, maybe aiming to establish a space for professional care amidst the personal concern.

Jungkook, though visibly reluctant, stepped back slightly but remained close. "Just... please be careful with her," he reiterated, his gaze fixed on the doctor, ensuring his request was taken seriously. The doctor nodded in acknowledgment, his demeanor now reflecting a balance of professional care and empathy towards Jungkook's concerns.

Turning his attention back to you, the doctor highlighted a specific area on the X-ray. "You see this fine line? That's a hairline fracture," he explained, pointing to the minor but significant finding. "It's nothing serious," he quickly reassured, aiming to alleviate any worry from both you and Jungkook.

He proceeded to tightly wrap your wrist in an elastic bandage, leaving no room for movement of your wrist, carefully explaining its maintenance. "This needs to stay on. Change it after showers or if it becomes dirty," he instructed, focusing on Jungkook as though deputizing him with your care, thinking he is your guardian.

"I'll take care of that," Jungkook immediately responded, accepting the role with a nod, signaling his commitment to your recovery.

"I'LL take care of that," you chimed in, mustering a planted smile despite the pain. Your attempt to assert some independence was met with an eye roll and a head shake from Jungkook, but the slight upturn of his lips portraying his amusement at your spirited response.
