Chapter 41: 40.

The Empath And The Narcissist | JJKWords: 15953

Driving into the building complex, the sight of heightened security catches your attention, a testament to the significance of the event being prepared for within. "It's probably because of the wedding," Miyeon muses, taking in the same scene. The guards, recognizing Miyeon, wave you through without hesitation, allowing a momentary distraction from the whirlwind of emotions swirling within you. As you find a parking spot, the weight of the upcoming reunion pushes other thoughts aside, replacing them with a singular focus on seeing your best friend. The anticipation lends a lightness to your steps as you make your way upstairs.

Standing before the main door, a smile unwittingly spreads across your face, mirroring the joy and excitement bubbling up inside. "Ready?" Miyeon asks, her voice a mix of excitement and support. Before you can respond, she rings the doorbell and quickly shoves you behind a wall adjacent to the door, adding an element of surprise to the already charged moment.

The door swings open to reveal Hyeyeon, her expression one of casual curiosity that shifts dramatically at the sight of you. "Y/N!" she exclaims, her voice a mixture of shock and overwhelming happiness.

"Hi" you speak softly.

The moment she recognizes you, her emotions spill over, a tangible connection reigniting instantly. Miyeon nudges you forward, and you and Hyeyeon collapse into a tight embrace, a physical manifestation of the months of separation and missed moments.

"I missed you so much, Y/N. I was so alone here without you" Hyeyeon's tears are infectious, and soon you're both crying, the emotions raw and real. "I missed you more than you'll ever know. I am so sorry to abandon you like that, Hyeyeon-ah," you whisper, guilt and relief mingling in your voice. "Oh, fuck you for that," she retorts amidst sobs, her words carrying no real heat, only affection and missed connection. "Thanks for coming back. I missed you so-so much," she couldn't mention that enough times, her voice thick with emotion.

Standing to the side, Miyeon watches the reunion with a fond smile, momentarily feeling like an outsider to this deep bond. Her playful complaint, "Hey, by the way, I could use a hug too, you know," breaks the intensity of the moment, and you both laugh through your tears, pulling her into the group hug.

Settling down on the couch, the conversation turns to recent events, with Hyeyeon expressing concern for Miyeon, well aware of the turmoil she's faced. "Are you okay, Miyeon?" she asks, her voice laden with worry. Miyeon's response, though tinged with emotion, carries a thread of determination. "I'm all fine, but I will be better when I talk to Taehyung," she states, her mind set on confronting and resolving the issues with Taehyung.

Hyeyeon shares that Taehyung and Jungkook had just returned the previous night, hesitating as she mentions Miyeon's husband, a topic still fraught with tension. The mention of their morning departure does little to deter Miyeon's resolve. "That's fine. Now that I'm here, I am not going anywhere without talking to Tae," she declares, her voice firm, marking a turning point in her journey toward facing her challenges head-on, with the support of friends who've become family.

"What about you, Y/N?" Hyeyeon's question, accompanied by a comforting hand on your thigh, draws your attention back to the present, grounding you amidst the swirl of emotions. "I'm fine... as usual," you respond, making eye contact with her, a silent exchange of understanding passing between you.

"I can't imagine how you handled yourself all alone. I'm proud of you," she confesses, her admiration and concern evident in her tone. Her words act as a balm, soothing the raw edges of your experiences.

"You're right, Hyeyeon, she is the strongest one amongst us," Miyeon chimes in, reinforcing the sentiment. You offer a small, appreciative smile in response, touched by their support even as you grapple with your inner turmoil.

As the conversation shifts to Seongjae, his name alone conjures up a flood of unsettling memories, his presence in your life a shadow that still looms large. The mention of his name sends a shiver down your spine, the reality of his obsession and the danger it posed still too fresh in your mind.

Breaking the heavy atmosphere, Hyeyeon suggests, "I bet you both are hungry. I was just about to make dinner for me and the guys. Jimin texted me that they were on their way home from a long day" Her casual mention of preparing lunch for everyone, including the possibility of Jungkook's presence, ignites a flurry of emotions within you. The thought of seeing him again after everything that has transpired sends your heart racing, a mix of anticipation and anxiety knotting in your stomach.

Following Hyeyeon into the kitchen, you and Miyeon offer to help, diving into the task of preparing a meal for six. The distraction of cooking, the chopping and stirring, provides a temporary reprieve from the churn of your thoughts. Yet, beneath the surface, the prospect of Jungkook walking through that door at any moment keeps you on edge, a testament to the unresolved feelings and the complicated history you share with him. The warmth of the kitchen and the camaraderie with Hyeyeon and Miyeon stand in stark contrast to the cold uncertainty that fills you at the thought of facing Jungkook once more.

About half an hour into cooking, the sound of the door unlocking and the low hum of conversation drifts into the kitchen. "I had warned them before, but we somehow let it all slip," you overhear Jimin's voice, tinged with a mix of annoyance and relief, as he strides into the living area that's just a stone's throw away from where you're all bustling about in the kitchen.

"Hyeyeon-ah, I'm back!" Jimin calls out, a routine greeting that halts mid-air as he picks up on the unexpected hustle and bustle from the kitchen. "Jimin, look who's here," Hyeyeon says with a bright smile, pulling you into a tight side hug that leaves little room for movement. Trapped in her embrace, you offer Jimin a timid wave and a gentle smile, momentarily caught off guard by his arrival.

Jimin pauses, his eyes darting between you, Miyeon, and Hyeyeon engaged in cooking. A playful grin spreads across his face. "Is this a dream, or have I stepped into some kind of perfect version of this world?" he jokes, his surprise morphing into delight at the sight of friends united in the kitchen.

Jimin's arrival, marked by his casual announcement of return, momentarily fades into the background as another presence commands your attention. Jungkook, following closely behind, steps into the periphery of your vision, igniting an almost electric charge in the space between you two.

Your heart instinctively responds, quickening its pace, as if attuned to the mere possibility of his proximity. Yet, it's not his expression that betrays his feelings; his face remains a carefully maintained mask of neutrality, the kind you've come to associate with him in moments of unexpected encounters. Instead, it's his eyes that speak volumes, offering a glimpse into the whirlwind of emotions hidden beneath the surface.

As your gazes lock, there's an immediate sense of everything else melting away. The bustling kitchen, the chatter of your friends, even the sound of your own breathing seems to fade into a distant murmur. In his eyes, you catch a flicker of surprise—not the sharp, jolting kind, but a soft, unfolding realization, like the first rays of sunlight piercing through a morning haze. It's subtle, yet unmistakably there, a gentle widening of his eyes that speaks of unguarded moments and the quiet joy of these unexpected meetings.

This exchange, fleeting and charged with unspoken words, is a witness of the connection that still exists between you, felt in the quietest beats of your heart and seen in the unguarded moments of his gaze. It's a reminder that, despite the distance and the silence that may have grown between you, there remains a thread, thin and resilient, that continues to connect you both, visible only in the moments when your eyes meet and the world around you fades away.

It was as if you two never met last night, as if you two never had an argument last night and as if this is the first time you two are seeing each other after your confrontation. Maybe the heated moment between you last night was a need of closure to that argument that separated you two and also nothing but spilling of unexpressed emotions.

"Taehyung," Miyeon's voice, tinged with a blend of nervousness and urgency, cuts through the thick air of unspoken emotions, redirecting everyone's attention to her. Her call serves as a gentle nudge back to reality, breaking the spell that seemed to have enveloped you and Jungkook, reminding everyone of the complex web of relationships and unresolved tensions that coexist within this shared space.

As Taehyung's eyes land on Miyeon, a flicker of relief passes through him, a brief moment where his features soften at the sight of her safe and sound. However, almost as quickly as it appears, his expression hardens, the relief replaced by a surge of anger that seems to consume him.

Without a word, he turns on his heel, his movements sharp and decisive, and heads straight for the bedroom, clearly not ready to confront Miyeon or the tangled emotions her presence stirs within him. Miyeon, understanding the gravity of the situation yet unwilling to let the moment pass, follows him without hesitation, her steps quick and determined. The sound of the bedroom door closing behind them marks the beginning of a long-overdue conversation, leaving the rest of you in a suspended state of awkwardness.

"Well..." Jimin trails off, exchanging a glance with Jungkook that's loaded with unspoken words and shared apprehensions. The tension in the room is palpable, a stark contrast to the warmth of the kitchen just moments before. Everyone's attention momentarily shifts towards the closed bedroom door, pondering the outcome of the confrontation unfolding behind it.

Turning away from the door, Jimin redirects his focus back to you, a gesture to break the uneasy silence that has settled over the group. "Good to see you back, Y/N-ssi, never thought I'd see you again" he says, his voice carrying a genuine warmth as he makes his way over to where you're standing in the kitchen. The simple greeting feels like a lifeline, a return to normalcy amidst the emotional turmoil.

"Congratulations on the wedding," you respond, offering him a smile. Despite the undercurrents of tension and unresolved issues filling the room, this moment of personal connection with Jimin reminds you of the bonds that have always held your group together, a testament to the enduring nature of friendship and the capacity for celebration even in times of strife.

Engaged in conversation with Jimin, you can't help but remain acutely aware of Jungkook's movements in the periphery of your vision. The simple act of talking doesn't dull the heightened senses that come alive at the prospect of his closeness. As he approaches, navigating the space of the kitchen with an ease that speaks of familiarity, you find yourself stationed near the entrance, idly by the island that serves as a central hub in the cozy kitchen.

The moment he glides past you is charged with an unspoken tension, the air seemingly thickening around you. There's an almost imperceptible distance between the fabric of your clothes and his, yet it's enough to send a shiver down your spine, a visceral reaction to his proximity. The sensation is so startling, so reminiscent of moments past, that your grip tightens reflexively around the items you're holding, a knife suddenly feeling heavier in your hand. A sharp intake of breath escapes you, a silent acknowledgment of the effect his mere presence has on you.

Jungkook, for his part, seems equally affected by the momentary closeness. As he moves by you, there's a brief instance where his hand drifts closer to your body, an involuntary movement that suggests a desire for contact. His eyes close for a fraction of a second, as if savoring the moment, inhaling the scent of you that lingers in the air, a gesture that speaks volumes of the turmoil beneath his composed exterior.

Watching him walk away, a tumult of emotions churns within you, leaving you momentarily lost in thought. Your gaze follows him to the fridge, where he retrieves a bottle of water, the simplicity of the action doing nothing to ease the complexity of the feelings swirling inside you.

Biting your bottom lip, you're left to ponder the significance of these fleeting interactions, the subtle signs of connection that persist despite the distance you've tried to put between you. It's a familiar stirring in your stomach, a reminder of the depth of what once was, and perhaps, what still lingers unspoken between you and Jungkook.

As Jimin and Hyeyeon subtly recognize the charged atmosphere between you and Jungkook, they opt for a timely exit.

"Y/N, finish chopping up these veggies. I'll be back. I need to show Jimin this new delivery of wedding material that arrived this afternoon," Hyeyeon quickly orchestrates their departure, whisking Jimin away before you have a chance to process their leaving. Suddenly, the room feels larger, the space between you and Jungkook filled with an unspoken tension.

Now alone, the silence that envelops the kitchen is profound, punctuated only by the rhythmic sound of your chopping. The air between you two feels charged, a tangible current of unaddressed emotions and unanswered questions.

"Did you drive all the way to Busan?" Jungkook's voice cuts through the silence, his tone casual yet laden with an underlying curiosity. He's rummaging through the pantry, his back to you, maintaining a physical distance that does little to ease the emotional proximity.

"I did," you reply, momentarily caught off guard by his attempt at conversation. The simplicity of the exchange does nothing to alleviate the tension, instead adding another layer to the already complex dynamic.

"Hmm," he acknowledges, his response noncommittal yet somehow intimate in the quiet of the kitchen.

Feeling the need to occupy your hands, you begin searching for pots and pans, the clatter of utensils a welcome distraction from the intensity of the moment. "What do you need?" Jungkook's voice, closer now, breaks the brief lull in your task.

"A pot to boil all the veggies," you answer, your focus momentarily diverted from the tangible tension in the air.

Without hesitation, he steps closer, reaching for the cabinet directly above you. His proximity is overwhelming; he's so close that you can feel the heat radiating from his body, his presence enveloping you. As he towers over you, the distance between your chest and his diminishes, his chin lingers right above your head, almost brushing against each other. The sensation sends a shiver down your spine, his scent enveloping you, a familiar mixture that tugs at memories best left undisturbed. You close your eyes for a fleeting second, allowing yourself to be momentarily lost in the sensation, filling yourself in with his scent.

"Here," he says, handing you the pot with a steadiness that belies the electric moment. As he closes the cabinet door and takes a step away from you.

"Pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery" He takes a moment to point out the locations throughout the kitchen, a brief guide that serves as a pretext for a hasty retreat.

With that, Jungkook exits the kitchen, leaving behind a silence that feels even more pronounced after his departure. Both your hearts are given a momentary break, though the brief interaction leaves a lasting imprint, a reminder of the complex web of feelings that still connects you two, despite the time and distance that has tried to sever it.
