Colby should have broken up with her. He should have confessed. To anyone at all. Told her the truth. But no. He decided he loved her more. More than he loved Sam. He had been obsessed with her for months, why couldn't he be obsessed with her again?
So he continued to love her.
Gabi ð«¶â¤ï¸ : 'Sorry, I'm staying in Costa Rica for a little while longer, I don't know when I'll be back, my dad had some health complications. Love you lots.'
Colby sent back a simple reply, stating he hoped her father got better, and that he missed and loved her, but she could stay as long as she needed too. He sent it, looking at her location under her name. It still said LA, California, maybe it was glitching or something, either way, he was exhausted and didn't care enough to look deeper.
He looked over to see the red-headed boy (before he red-dyed it black)Â sprawled out on the couch, snoring lightly.
~ 9 years prior ~
"Sammmmmmm! Wake up! We have schooooool." Colby hollered into his best friends ear.
"Mnmmmmm. I don' wanna." Grumbled a sleepy blonde boy, rubbing his eyes. He was oddly positioned, his head on Colby's lap, but one of his knees on the ground, his other leg propped up on the edge of the couch.
"He's not up yet?" A familiar voice came from the doorway. Colby shook his head at the dark haired woman that he called mom. She was wearing a simple button up white shirt and a short black skirt. A cup of black coffee in her hand.
She smiled at the boys, who had fallen asleep watching movies the night before. She walked over to Sam, grinning before yanking the blanket off of him, waking him abruptly.
"Mommmm." Colby complained, but he giggled at his friends response. Sam squealing for warmth. Colby's mom was like a second mother to Sam, and Sam's mom like another to Colby . Colby's mother laughed lightly, telling them to come eat soon and that their friend Nate and Matt we're outside waiting to be driven to school.
It was their senior year. And Sam and Colby were inseparable, if Sam wasn't at Colby's house, then colby was at Sam's, and vice versa. Sam crawled out of the youngest grip, stretching before looking into his eyes softly, he wasn't wearing a shirt, and his pelvis was showing. Colby flushed red, smiling eagerly back at Sam.
Sam grabbed his backpack and pulled a black t-shirt on. Sam pulled Colby off of the couch, and they both stumbled into the kitchen, grabbing a snack or two. Colby grabbed his backpack, and hoisted his over his shoulder. Sam held it by the handle, holding a granola bar in his other hand.
They exited the kitchen, Colby's mom following them out the front door.
"Sam! Colby! Finally, we're gonna be late! And we all know how Mrs. Lee gets." Matt grumbled, pulling his backpack behind him and reaching for the car door. Nate laughed at Matt, hopping into the back seat next to him. Sam opened the passenger seat door and climbed in.
"Be carful Colby! I'll be working late tonight. You and Sam be safe." She said, winking, my face flushed red and waved her away.
"Thanks Ms. Brock!" Â Sam called, from his seat, causing Colby's mother to insist Sam calls her by her first name. Colby just laughed a this, said goodbye to his mom and got into the front seat of his car.
"What did she mean by safe?" Matt asked, wiggling his eyebrows, making both Sam and Colby glow red. Laughing off the joke, their friends always "shipped" them so it was a normal occurrence.
The drive wasn't long, as school was only a 15 minute walk. The drive wasn't crazy, filled with random inside jokes, or crude remarks towards Matt's badly bleached hair, sticking out at every angle.
When they finally reached school, Matt and Nate immediately hopped out of the car, even before Colby parked. They bolted inside, even though they were early.
"Gosh Colby, it's freezing." Sam was talking about the cold breeze of November. Though Kansas never really got freezing, but it was definitely cold.
"You want my hoodie?" Colby asked, slipping his hoodie off before getting a response. He passed the hoodie to his shivering friend, smiling and slightly red.
Sam thanked him as Colby got lost in his friends looks. As he pulled the hoodie over his t-shirt, Colby was lost in thought. 'He's so hot.' Funny how comfortable Colby was with his feelings then, and how so much had changed.
"Colby!?"
~
"Colby?" Sam's voice echoed through his head. Shaking Colby from his thoughts. He was pretty sure that day, 9 years ago, would haunt him forever. "Dude, you okay?" Sam asked.
"Do you remember senior year, that day, in late November?" Colby asked. His face blank. Sam froze, his face turning red.
"I- yes..."
"Never mind, will you wake Jake up, I'm hungry." Colby mumbled, getting up. Sam let out a soft exhale, his face become less red. He nodded, shaking their friend awake.
"C'mon Nat- JAKE!" Sam quickly corrected himself, waking Jake up with the startling change in sound. Jake rubbed his eyes, getting up from his spot of the couch. This made Colby close his eyes, remembering his day-dream.
Colby abruptly got up and grabbed his keys and a jacket, walking out to his car. Ignoring the two boy's protests. He got into the front seat and turned up the music. Trying to forget his 'un-holy' thoughts.
"Jesus Colby, you gave me like five seconds!" Jake said opening the back door, wheezing.
"Get in the front seat." Colby spoke sternly, making Jake immediately comply. Colby never really spoke seriously so he knew something was wrong. Amd Sam always sat shotgun next to Colby. So something was VERY wrong.
Jake tried to ignore it as Sam climbed into the back seat, feeling left out.
They drove around a bit. Before Colby's random thoughts were interrupted. "Psst, Colby?"
~
"Psst, Colby." Matt whispered, as Colby listened to their teachers droning lecture. Colby looked over to see Matt holding out a note. Colby looked skeptically at it, before taking the not and unfolding it.
'So you and Sam. Colby and Sam sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G.' Colby looked up the see Matt wiggling his eyebrows and eyeing the blonde boy sitting in front of him. Colby rolled his eyes blushing profusely, he looked back at the rest of the note.
'You are so in love with him, and he is so oblivious. You know I support gay people, my brother is gay. So just kiss him or something.'
Colby crumpled up the note and threw it directed at Matt. It missed. Instead it landed on Sam's desk.
"Colby?"
~
"Colby! THE LIGHTS GREEN!" yelled Jake, gripping Colby's shoulder. Colby immediately hit the gas pedal. Ignoring Jake's concern.
He pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant and told the two boys to get out, very sternly.
"Colby are you okay?"
~
"Colby are you okay?" Sam asked, as Colby tried to grab the note.
"Not for you!" He tried to get the note, as Matt tried to hold his laughter in. "Sam don't look at that."
"Colby?"
~
"Colby?" Sam asked, grabbing Colby's shoulder. Colby shrugged him off and got out of the car. He stumbled towards the entrance of the restaurant, trying to force his way past Jake, who was majorly concerned.
"Colby! Stop!" Jake yelled. "You are clearly out of it. Sam will take you back home, nd I'll uber home once I get food." Colby looked at him, his thoughts finally vanishing.
Sam pulled Colby's arm and dragged him back to the car, pushing him into the passenger seat. He said something to Jake, who nodded, but Colby was still trying to contemplate what was going on and didn't hear. Sam got into the drivers seat and started driving back home, mumbling something to himself. Something along the lines of, "It should have never happened." "We should have never done that."
Colby was too out of it to care. Before he even knew, they reached home. And Sam seemed pissed. He slammed the car door and walked over to the passenger side. He yanked the door open and pulled Colby out.
He grabbed Colby's arm, and led him inside, slamming the door behind him and placing the keys down.
He collapsed on the couch angrily. Looking at Colby with anger in his eyes. His words caught in his throat, when they did come out they burned.
"Colby, I don't know what's with you, frankly I don't know why you brought it up, we promised to never talk about it. I mean we drunkenly told some of our friends, but they promised to ti mention it. God Colby. Too much is going on right now." Sam spoke, bitterness evident in his words. "Just calm down, okay?"
~
"Just calm down, okay" Sam laughed, "I'm not going to look at it. I promise." He picked up the paper and tossed it into the trash next to him. Ignoring Matt's  complaints. He looked back and smiled sympathetically at Colby.
Colby covered his face, as it was becoming a deep rose color. Matt just elbowed him and made a kissy face at him. Causing Colby to smack his arm.
"Boys! If you keep interrupting I'll have to give you both detention! Pay attention! This is your last warning." Their teacher, Mr. Madison, yelled, cause Sam to stifle a laugh and look back at Colby and Matt.
The two looked at each other and rolled their eyes, trying not to break out into laughter. It was their last class of the day, they knew Mr. Madison wouldn't dare give them detention if that meant staying even longer at school. It was a mindless threat, but it still got the two boys to shut up and listen to his lecture on American History.
He finished up the lesson and told the class they could leave early, not really caring about anything other than getting out of school. They three boy's immediately jumped up and scurried out of the room, running towards Nate's last class to greet him.
They waited outside, Matt nudging Colby to do something about Sam. Colby just looked at him with warning in his eyes. "I'll give you a hundred dollars." Matt spoke into Colby's ear. Colby just looked at him with an unreadable expression.
"Guysssss how did you get out of class so early, Ms. Edgeworth nearly bit my head off when I got up before the bell rang." Nate said, as the halls started to flood with people. They got pushed down the hallway, trying not to get trampled by the crowd. Colby grabbed Sam's hand and pulled him through the wave of high schoolers.
They finally made it outside, making their way to Colby's car. "Uhm we actually have a ride!" Matt spoke, pulling Nate away.
"We do?" He asked, clearly oblivious to Matt's idea. Matt nudged him agressively. "Right... I mean- yep, we ha ride." Nate said, still clearly confused.
Colby just rolled his eyes. The two boys walked away, Matt mumbling some strong words at  Nate.
"They have been acting weird. Haven't they." Sam chuckled, looking into Colby's eyes with Rodney cheeks. Colby looked into his eyes and cupped his cheek. Staring into Sam's soul.
"I'm sorry." Colby said, before pulling Sam forward and kissing him.
Sam pulled away after enjoying it for a few seconds. Blushing profusely and looking down. Colby burst out laughing, trying to pass it off as a joke.
"That-... what the fuck was that Colby!" Sam yelled looking into Colby's blue eyes, with aggression and want. Colby just got into the car saying that we wouldn't talk about it.
But Colby that day had stolen Sam's first 'real' kiss.
And invoked feelings in Sam that he wouldn't know until years and years later.
~
"Colby... I'm sorry for lashing out... it's just weird... that... that- I d'know. I just... I don't want things to be weird." Sam said, exhaling, "I feel like since that day, no matter how much we ignore it or forget it, we haven't really been the same... there has always been something between us."
Colby nodded, trying to rub the red off of his face. "And I just... I want to have what we couldn't have in high school." Sam muttered. That confused Colby even more but he just went with it.
"Yeah, I'm sorry... 18 year old Colby was stupid, can we agree... no more weirdness between us. Even with the 'solby jokes' and all. We can just be our real self." Sam nodded, looking solemnly at his friend. "I mean, we're straight so... we can kiss... and it can just be a joke, you know?" Colby spoke trying to laugh off the pain he felt.
Sam choked on his words, nodding. He had no idea how much those words hurt. He got up, wobbling reluctantly towards the stairs, making some excuse about needing to edit something. As he wiped stray tears that rolled down his cheeks the front door opened.
An exasperated Jake looked up at Sam, his face going from happy to concerned. But Sam just walked up the stairs coughing back tears. He reached his room and collapsed onto the ground. Reaching for his phone.
"Hey siri," Sam spoke, his voice shaky with pain. "Call Katrina."
