Chapter 5: 5 Rescued And Kicked Out

Apocalypse Survive (Completed)Words: 6007

"Kael," she whispered urgently.

His head snapped up, eyes wide with disbelief. "Ann?"

"Who else?" she smirked, shattering the lock with a single punch.

Kael stumbled into her arms, his body trembling with relief. "I knew you'd come," he breathed, voice raw.

Ann tightened her grip around him, her voice fierce. "Always."

But their reunion was short-lived. The remaining alphas had regrouped, their leader-a towering brute with scars etched across his face-advancing with a sneer.

"Think you can just waltz in and take what's mine?" he snarled.

Ann's eyes burned with cold fury. "He was never yours."

The fight that followed was brutal, a blur of fists, claws, and blood. Ann moved like a force of nature, every blow fueled by her determination to protect Kael. The leader was strong, but Ann was stronger-faster, more relentless.

With a final, bone-crunching punch, she sent him sprawling to the ground, unconscious.

Breathing heavily, Ann turned back to Kael, who watched her with a mixture of awe and love.

"You okay?" she asked, wiping blood from her knuckles.

Kael managed a weak laugh. "I think I should be asking you that."

Ann huffed. "Told you-I'm the tough one, remember?"

Kael's expression softened. "Yeah, but even tough ones need someone to care for them."

Her chest tightened, but she pushed past the emotion. "Let's get out of here."

They made their way back through the ruins, the adrenaline slowly fading. When they finally reached the safety of their hideout, Kael collapsed onto their bedding with a weary sigh.

Ann sat beside him, her usual stoic mask cracking. "I almost lost you," she admitted quietly.

Kael took her hand, his grip steady despite his exhaustion. "But you didn't. You saved me."

Ann swallowed hard, her voice rough. "I can't... I won't let anything happen to you, Kael."

He smiled faintly. "I know. And I'll always trust you to protect me."

Ann leaned down, pressing her forehead against his. "Damn right you will."

Their bond had been tested by fire, but it only burned brighter now-fierce, unbreakable, and filled with a love that refused to be extinguished.

Together, they would face whatever the apocalypse threw their way. And Ann knew one thing for certain:

She would always fight for Kael. Always.

Ann and Kael barely had time to catch their breath after the daring rescue when trouble came knocking again. Settling down at the supposed "safe" base was supposed to offer some relief - a break from the constant struggle for survival. They hadn't planned on being betrayed.

The base was bustling with survivors trying to rebuild their lives, but Ann's instincts told her something was off. There were too many eyes lingering on Kael, especially from a group of rugged individuals near the central barracks. Their gazes weren't friendly curiosity - they were calculating, possessive.

Ann didn't miss it, but Kael, ever trusting, brushed it off. "They probably just aren't used to new faces," he said softly, trying to ease her tension.

Ann grunted skeptically. "Maybe. But I don't like it."

Kael smiled faintly. "You're always on guard."

"Damn right I am."

That was why she hesitated when the base leader, a grizzled man named Harris, requested her presence to discuss security measures.

"You sure you'll be okay without me for a bit?" Ann asked Kael, eyes sharp with concern.

Kael nodded, his gentle nature shining through despite the dangers they constantly faced. "I'll be fine. Go handle the meeting. I'll stay here."

Reluctantly, Ann left, her gut twisting with unease.

---

It happened fast.

Kael was in their modest living space when the door burst open. Four figures stormed in, their faces masked with determination and greed.

Kael barely had time to react before rough hands grabbed him, yanking him to his feet.

"Let go!" he snarled, struggling fiercely.

The largest of the attackers sneered. "You're coming with us, pretty boy. We've got plans for you."

Kael fought with everything he had, but the odds were stacked against him. His strength, though formidable, couldn't match the coordinated attack of four trained alphas.

One of them hissed, "Make this easy, or we'll hurt you bad."

Kael spat defiantly, "I'd like to see you try."

They didn't get the chance.

The door exploded inward with a deafening crash. Ann stood silhouetted against the fading daylight, her eyes burning with murderous fury.

"Big mistake," she growled.

The attackers barely had time to process the threat before Ann launched herself at them like a whirlwind of destruction. Her enhanced strength and speed turned the cramped space into a battleground.

Bones cracked under her fists; bodies were flung against walls with brutal force. One tried to pull a knife, but Ann disarmed him effortlessly, twisting his wrist until he howled in pain.

Kael, despite his injuries, managed to trip another assailant, giving Ann the opening she needed to knock him out cold.

Within moments, the fight was over. The attackers lay groaning or unconscious on the floor.

Ann turned to Kael, panting heavily. "You okay?"

Kael wiped blood from his split lip, managing a shaky smile. "Better now."

Ann's jaw clenched, her rage simmering just below the surface. "They're lucky I didn't kill them."

Before Kael could respond, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. Harris and several base guards arrived, weapons drawn.

"What the hell happened here?" Harris demanded, taking in the scene of carnage.

"They tried to take Kael," Ann said flatly, her voice cold as ice.

Harris's expression darkened, but not with concern. "This isn't how we handle things here. You brought this chaos into our base."

Ann's eyes narrowed dangerously. "You're blaming us?"

Harris crossed his arms. "We can't afford disruptions like this. You're a liability. Both of you."

Kael's voice was hoarse but steady. "We were attacked. How is that our fault?"

"It doesn't matter," Harris said dismissively. "Pack your things. You're out."

Ann stepped forward, her fists clenched. "You're kicking us out after we defended ourselves?"
