Ann exhaled sharply. "Power over the five elements, healing that's faster than normal, and strength that would make most alphas jealous and an ever changing weapon." She met his gaze head-on, waiting for judgment or fear.

But Kael only smiled softly, his voice tender. "That explains why you're always charging headfirst into danger."

Ann blinked, surprised by the lack of shock. "You're not freaked out?"

Kael's laugh was gentle. "Ann, you've saved my life more times than I can count. I'd trust you with anything-superpowers or not, besides I thought there wher only four elements."

Her chest tightened at his unwavering acceptance. "You're too damn sweet for this world," she muttered, ruffling his already messy hair.

The moment was light, but it didn't last. Kael's expression shifted abruptly, his body tensing as a faint flush crept up his neck.

"Kael?" Ann's voice sharpened with concern.

He took a shaky breath, trembling slightly. "It's... it's starting."

Ann's eyes narrowed as realization dawned. "Your heat?"

Kael nodded, embarrassed and vulnerable. "I-I didn't think it would hit so soon."

Ann didn't hesitate. She knelt beside him, cupping his face gently but firmly. "Look at me, Kael. You're not alone in this."

Tears glimmered in his eyes, his usual composure cracking under the overwhelming sensations coursing through him. "I'm sorry," he whispered, ashamed. "I can't control it."

"Hey," Ann said softly but with authority. "You have nothing to apologize for. I've got you."

Kael's breath hitched as Ann guided him to lie back on the makeshift bed, her presence grounding him. She took charge effortlessly, her movements confident and sure as she whispered reassurances.

"You're safe," she murmured, brushing damp hair from his forehead. "Let me take care of you, just like you do for me."

Kael's body trembled, heat radiating from him as he clung to Ann's steady presence. "I trust you," he breathed, voice raw with vulnerability.

Those three words hit Ann harder than any blow she'd ever taken. In a world where survival demanded selfishness, Kael's trust was a rare and precious gift.

"I won't let you down," she promised, her voice fierce with conviction.

What followed was an emotional blur-Kael yielding completely to Ann's care as she guided him through the storm of his heat. She was gentle yet commanding, her strength a comforting shield against the chaos threatening to overwhelm him.

When it was over, Kael lay curled against Ann's side, his breathing slow and even. The tension that had gripped his body was gone, replaced by a serene exhaustion.

"You okay?" Ann asked quietly, brushing her thumb across his cheek.

Kael nodded, his voice hoarse but steady. "Better now. Thanks to you."

Ann snorted softly. "You're tougher than you look."

A faint smile tugged at Kael's lips. "Only because I have you."

Ann's throat tightened, but she forced herself to speak. "Kael... I'm not good at this emotional stuff. But you-you matter to me. More than I ever thought possible."

Kael's eyes shone with warmth, his shyness melting into pure affection. "I love you, Ann."

The words hung in the air, raw and honest.

Ann took a shaky breath. "Yeah... I love you too, you stubborn idiot."

Kael laughed softly, the sound filling the space between them with something rare and beautiful.

In that moment, Ann knew that no matter what dangers lay ahead, they would face them together. Their love was fierce, unyielding-a beacon of light in a world shrouded in darkness.

And for Ann, who had once believed that attachment was a weakness, Kael had become her greatest strength.

The wasteland didn't care about love stories.

It didn't pause for sweet confessions or tender moments between battered survivors. And so, only days after Kael and Ann's bond deepened into something raw and unbreakable, the world reminded them just how cruel it could be.

It started with a routine supply run through crumbling streets lined with abandoned vehicles and skeletal remnants of buildings. Ann, always the sentinel, scanned their surroundings with sharp eyes while Kael moved quietly beside her. His steps were soft but sure, the soldier in him never fully dormant despite his gentle nature.

"You sure this place isn't tapped out?" Kael asked, voice low.

Ann smirked faintly. "Trust me, there's always something people miss."

They reached an old warehouse, its rusting doors creaking ominously as Ann pushed them open. The scent of decay hung heavy in the air, but there were no immediate signs of danger. Kael followed her inside, his instincts on high alert.

"I'll check the back," he offered.

Ann hesitated for a split second before nodding. "Stay sharp."

But neither of them saw it coming.

A sudden crash echoed through the building, followed by shouts. Ann whipped around, heart pounding as a group of heavily armed alphas descended from the shadows like vultures.

"Kael!" she shouted, but it was too late.

Rough hands grabbed him, dragging him toward the exit despite his fierce struggle. Ann charged forward, fury igniting in her veins, but a thick cloud of smoke filled the air-some kind of suppressant designed to disorient.

Coughing and blinded, Ann fought through the haze, her enhanced strength keeping her on her feet. By the time the smoke cleared, Kael was gone.

The world narrowed to a single focus: Get Kael back.

Ann moved with ruthless efficiency, tracking the alpha group through the wasteland. Her enhanced vision picked up faint boot prints and broken foliage, leading her toward a fortified encampment hidden deep within the ruins.

The sight of it made her blood boil.

A makeshift cage sat in the center, and inside was Kael-his wrists bound, a dark bruise marring his cheek. He sat with his head bowed, but Ann could see the tension in his frame, the stubborn defiance that refused to break.

"Idiots," Ann muttered under her breath, her lips curling into a feral grin.

They had no idea who they were messing with.

---

Nightfall cloaked the camp in shadows, and Ann moved like a ghost through the perimeter, taking down guards with brutal precision. Her enhanced strength made quick work of their weapons, snapping rifles like twigs and leaving unconscious bodies in her wake.

Her heart hammered in her chest-not from exertion, but from the thought of Kael hurt or worse. The mere idea was enough to fuel her rage.

Finally, she reached the cage.
