Chapter 4
"Hello, Nina. Nice to see you're alive."
"What did you do?" I cross my hands over my chest and stare at him.
"Uncle Peter, nice to see you too. I missed you so much." He mutters under his breath. I keep my arms crossed without saying a word. He sighs before turning to Derek. "What did you tell her?"
"That you're a psychopath."
"Isn't that up to her to decide?"
"Then tell her." Derek raises his brows. Uncle Peter says nothing. "You want to know who else made it out of the fire?" Derek turns his hard gaze to me.
"Who?" I ask raising my brows.
"Laura."
"Laura?" I ask perking my head up, with a smile. "She's alive? Where is she."
My big sister is alive? I thought she died along with Derek. She always took care of me and Cora when we were younger. She helped us with our homework and was always a typically big sister to us. Teasing Derek was always her favorite pass time.
Derek turns his hard gaze to Uncle Peter who looks down at the floor.
"She's dead, Nina." Derek says softly. My smile falls. "Peter killed her." My gaze turns deadly as I slowly turn my head to Peter.
"You killed her?" My voice comes out hard.
"I'm sorry." He says after a while. "I had no other choice, okay. I was dying. It's not like I wanted to."
"You should've just died then-" I stalk towards him. "-than murder a member of your own family. Your own niece. Would you kill me if I was an alpha?" His gaze drops back to the floor.
"I only killed her so I could get enough power to kill the people responsible." He says calmly.
"Responsible for what."
"The fire." Derek informs. My gaze turns back to Peter.
"Did you kill them all?" I ask softly.
"Every last one." He looks me in the eyes. I look back at him for a few seconds before turning around and walking to the window.
He killed Laura. He killed my sister. My innocent sister...
But he killed those who killed my family... He got revenge for everyone in that house that died. Everyone that was burned alive by hunters... by them.
"Okay," I turn back around to him. "I understand why you did it. But I don't and I will never forgive you for killing Laura." I take a few steps towards him until I stand next to him.
"Understandable."
"But thank you for killing those murderers." I whisper. He looks surprised for a moment before smiling down at me.
"Anything for my niece."
"I'm not your niece anymore." I glare up into his eyes. "You lost that when you killed Laura."
The doors to the loft open. Cora and Boyd enter but freeze. Cora looks around the room before turning her gaze onto me.
"What's going on?" She asks with wide eyes.
"You're not going to believe what Peter here did."
"Could you stop glaring at me? It's giving me the creeps." I cross my arms but keep my gaze on him. "I said I'm sorry isn't that enough?" I keep glaring until he turns his gaze to Cora next to me.
"You don't hate me, right."
"What do you think?" She crosses her arms over her chest. The doors to the loft burst open and Scott steps inside.
"I know where they are."
"Same building as the Argents." Derek looks up at him. "We know."
"Cora and I followed the twins," Boyd adds.
"Then they want you to know," Scott says, joining us around the table.
"Or, more likely, they don't care," Peter deadpans.
"What is this?" Scott motions to the papers on the table.
"Blueprints," I answer lifting them up.
"Isn't it obvious? The schemers are scheming." Peter looks up at Scott. "Coming up with a coup de main, better known as a pre-emptive strike."
"You're going after them?" Scott asks in disbelief.
"Tomorrow." Derek crosses his arms over his chest. "And you're going to help us."
"If you want to, of course." I add with a shrug.
"I want to."
"Good," Derek looks back down to the blueprints. "They're one floor above them in the penthouse, right above Allison."
"Allison?" I ask, furrowing my brows.
"She's my... friend." Scott hesitates.
"Is she a werewolf too?"
"She's human," Derek says looking at Scott. Peter rolls his eyes about to open his mouth but Derek nudges him in the side. I furrow my brows.
"So kill them first. that's the plan?" Scott asks quickly.
"They won't even see it coming," Boyd tries to reason.
"Why is the default plan always murder?" Scott breathes out. "Just once, can someone try to come up with a plan that doesn't involve killing everyone?"
"I agree," I say while nodding my head slowly. "It should only be a last resort if there are no other options." I share a glance with Cora. She looks into my eyes for a few moments before turning her gaze to her hands.
"You never get tired of being so blandly moral, do you?" Peter looks pointedly at Scott. "Not that I disagree with them." He adds quickly glancing at me and Derek.
"I do," Cora speaks up. "Why do we need this kid?" She gives him a once-over.
"Did you forget what he did for us?" I nudge Cora, raising my brows.
"That kid helped save your life." Derek defends Scott. "And you know we can't just sit back and wait for them to make the first move."
"You can't beat a pack of Alphas." Scott says.
"That's why we're going after Deucalion," Cora says looking over to Scott. "Just him."
"Cut off the head of the snake and the body dies," Boyd adds.
"Only this isn't a snake," Peter speaks up. "it's a hydra."
"Cut off one head and two more will take its place." I breathe out running a hand through my hair.
"Somebody's been doing their summer reading," Peter tries to smile at me. I glare at him causing him to roll his eyes. "And like Scott said, they're all Alphas."
"Deucalion is still the leader," Derek says pointedly.
"Let's hope so."
"Nina?" Scott's eyes widen. "What are you doing here?"
"Derek told me to watch you." I deadpan, walking past him into his house. I look around the room. It looks homely with pictures frames hanging around the walls and general clutter spread out on the furniture.
"Why would Derek want you to watch me?" He closes the door and turns around to face me. I raise my brows.
"What? You don't think I could protect you if I wanted to?" I cross my arms over my chest
"It's not that, It's just I don't know why he thought someone needed to watch me."
"He's a big softy on the inside." Scott raises his brows. "Deep inside."
"And I can protect myself." He smiles to the side lifting up his claws.
"Against 'death destroyer of worlds'?" I scoff. "Good luck with that." I plop down on the couch. His eyes glance at the clock on the wall before looking back at me
"What are you going to do?" I ask slowly.
"Nothing." He answers a little too fast.
"Scott, you can tell me. I won't go running off to Derek if that's what you're worried about." I get up from the couch and approach him. "And besides... I can hear your heartbeat." He looks around the room for a bit before looking back into my eyes.
"I arranged to meet Deucalion at an abandoned mall." He says watching my expression. "Just him. Maybe if we talk to him about everything then maybe he'll understand" I study his face for a few seconds before I nod my head.
"It's a good plan."
"You agree?" He furrows his brows.
"Like I said yesterday, you don't always have to kill someone. Taking a life is never the answer." I fidget with my fingers. "Sometimes it's the only option... but you shouldn't have to." Scott stares at me for a moment without saying anything. "When are you leaving?"
"Uh...now I guess." His eyes glance to the clock.
"I'll come with you." I give him a light smile. "Moral support and... in case anything goes sidewards."
"I just need to get a few things." He says turning to walk up the stairs. I follow him up and enter his room. It's kind of what I'd expect a teenage boy's room to look like with clutter lying around on the floor and sports memorabilia on display. I walk around the room until my eyes stop on a lacrosse stick leaning against the wall.
"You play?" I ask picking it up.
"I'm on the school's team." He glances at me before putting on his jacket.
"You any good? Well, considering you're a werewolf I think the answer is yes."
"That's not how I play." He straightens his jacket, turning to me. "I don't want an advantage against anyone else."
"I'm thinking of trying out for the team too." He raises his brows. "Don't worry, I won't use any wolf power. Derek taught me how to play when we were kids." I position my hands on the stick and give it a light swing. He laughs lightly. "What?"
"That's not how you grip it." He takes the lacrosse stick from me and holds it in his hands. "One hand at the top here and the other at the bottom. Now you try." He gives it back to me and I position my hands how he said.
"That makes more sense." I laugh. "Derek was always better at basketball."
"If you rotate your hand outward there." He takes my left hand and turns it out a bit. "It gives you more control."
"Thanks. I'll remember that." I look up into his eyes with a light smile.
"Am I interrupting something?" Isaac suddenly asks. I jump from Scott and end up dropping the lacrosse stick.
"Uh... I was just showing her how to hold it." He stammers looking from me to Isaac.
"Where are you going?" Isaac motions to the helmet on the bed.
"Oh um..." He picks up the helmet and glances at me. "I was gonna go get some food to eat."
"Me too," I say placing the lacrosse stick back in its place. "I'm starved," I say pointedly at Scott.
"Yeah, we're just going to get some food." He turns his gaze back to Isaac.
"Oh cool. I'll come with you."
"No, dude it's okay we can eat alone," Scott fiddles with the helmet in his hands.
"What are you guys getting?"
"Uhh...Mexican," Scott looks to me.
"Dude, I love Mexican," Isaac turns around to leave.
"Isaac." Scott grabs his arm to stop him. "It's okay we can eat alone." Isaac looks between us with a smirk.
"Is this a date?"
"No!" We both say too loudly. My eyes widen as I glance over at Scott. He meets my gaze with equally wide eyes before we both hurriedly look away.
"Okay, then." Isaac says still smirking, "Let's go."
"Isaac..."
"I don't want you to go alone." He says with a knowing look. "Come on."
"Um..." Scott glances at me and Isaac. "I only have one extra helmet."
"Rock paper scissors?" I offer, holding out my hand.
"You know... I've always wanted to get a motorbike."
"You have a license?" He asks passing me the spare helmet.
"Not yet." I put it on my head but it's too loose.
"I can teach you, if you like?" He glances at my eyes.
"I might just take you up on that." My fingers fumble around trying to adjust the helmet.
"You just tighten it over here." Scott grabs the strap under my chin and pulls it. "There we go." He hops onto the motorbike and puts his own helmet on before starting up the engine. I slowly move to sit behind him. I cross my arms over my chest not really knowing what to do with them.
I know I'm supposed to grab onto Scott but...
"It's okay, you can grab onto me." He grabs my hands from behind him and puts them on his jacket. "Or you will fall off." I sit there awkwardly with my hands gripping onto his jacket.
I'm starting to think that maybe I should've let Isaac win...
"You ready?" he asks, looking back. I nod slightly, my hands still on his jacket. He revs the engine before driving off.
"Whoa," I exclaim wrapping my arms around his waist without a second thought. His body stiffens for a moment before it relaxes.
I smile as the wind blows my hair. There's something about being on a motorbike that takes your breath away. You feel free and exhilarated at the same time. All your worries just seem to fade into the background.
We arrive at the mall to see Isaac leaning against a pillar. I take my helmet off and get off the bike after Scott.
"Definitely getting one of these," I mutter, shaking my hair.
"Enjoy the ride?" Isaac walks up to us with a hint of a smirk on his lips.
"We're just going to talk to him," Scott says, ignoring Isaac's comment. "Try to reason with him, That's it." Isaac doesn't say anything but just stares at Scott.
"What?"
"Nothing, it's just that, uh...I'm actually kinda hungry now."
"So am I," Scott says while patting Isaac's back.
"Now that you mention it." I shrug patting my stomach before following after them. We walk further into the abandoned mall until we spot Deucalion standing on the escalator steps.
Something doesn't feel right about this...
"You didn't come alone," Deucalion says as we approach him.
"Yeah, this is Isaac and that's Nina," Scott motions to us.
"I'm not talking about them," I furrow my brows as I hear footsteps approaching us. I look behind me with a scoff.
"You knew I would do this," Scott says to Derek.
"You told me to watch him in case anything happened to him." I glare at Derek. "But you knew I would agree and go with."
"I knew you wouldn't agree with our plan." Derek glances over to Boyd and Cora walking up behind him.
"Unbelievable." I mutter shaking my head.
"Derek don't," Scott watches as Derek walks closer to Deucalion. "You can't do this so no one gets hurt. If someone else dies..."
"Him," Derek points at Deucalion with hatred burning his eyes. "Just him."
"Just me?" Deucalion asks calmly. "Now, how's a blind man find his way into a place like this all on his own?"
A scratching sound enters my ears. I look to the source to see Kali sliding down the concrete pillar using her claws. She jumps to the ground and stares us down with her red, vicious eyes. I take a step back as she slowly starts growling. My eyes dart around the mall and widen to see Ennis behind us and the Twins above us.
We're surrounded...
It's silent for a while. Like the calm before the storm. No one dares to make the first. I move my eyes around to everyone in the room. There's only one way out of this... and I don't think it's going to end well for us.
Derek suddenly charges forward running at Deucalion. Kali leaps forward and slashes his face. The Twins jump down from their floor and merge into their gigantic mutant wolf form. I take a step back with wide eyes. I look over at Scott and Isaac to see them wearing identical expressions to my own.
This is not what we had planned.
Isaac shifts and charges at the Twins. He tries to punch them but they dodge. I turn my gaze back to Scott to see him staring at Isaac with an annoyed expression.
"New plan," I say before running forward and slashing at them. They grab my wrist and twist it behind my back before throwing me to the side. Isaac throws another punch but misses again. The Twins take their chance and push Isaac to the floor. Scott lets out a huge roar before running forward. The Twins grab him before he can attack, and throw him into the concrete wall behind them. The wall breaks as Scott falls to the ground with a groan. I get up to try and attack the Twins again when I suddenly hear Cora cry out.
My eyes dart in her direction to see Ennis holding her arm and slashing her back. I growl and rush forward pushing Ennis away from my sister. He drops her but turns his vicious gaze to me.
"Rematch?" I growl before rushing forward. He slashes his claws out, but I slide underneath his arms and slash open his legs. I begin to get to my feet but he slashes my back. I fall back to the floor with a groan. He goes to slash me again but Cora runs at his side, diverting his attention. Boyd joins the fight and charges at him as well. Ennis knocks Cora to the floor next to me. He manages to grab Boyd by the throat while Kali slashes him across the chest. I stumble to my feet and lazily run at Ennis, but he is quick to grab me by my throat before slamming me to my ground. My head hits the concrete roughly causing my to vision get blurry. Ennis bends down and keeps his hand on my throat.
"Kill him," Deucalion suddenly speaks up. My eyes glance around and see Scott and Isaac being held down by twins and Kali has her feet claws against Cora's neck. Boyd is laying on the floor glancing between Deucalion and Derek. My eyes widen.
He wants Derek to kill Boyd. He wants Derek to take the first step in killing his pack...
"The others can go," Deucalion adds. Boyd's panicked eyes stop on Derek. "You're beaten," Deucalion begins walking down the escalator. "Do it, Derek. Take the first step."
"Are we serious with this kid?" Kali speaks up in disbelief. "Look at him. He's an alpha? To what? A couple of useless teenagers?"
"Some have more promise than others." Deucalion says, glancing at Scott. His eyes move to mine for a split second before turning back to Kali.
"Let him rise to the occasion then. What will it be Derek? Pack-" Kali pushes her foot deeper against Cora's neck causing her to cry out. "-or family?" I struggle in Ennis' grip as I watch Cora's face scrunching up in pain. Derek's eyes are downcast as they look between us all.
I can't begin to imagine the pain he must be feeling. Having to choose between me and Cora; and Isaac, Boyd, and Scott. It's a weight no Alpha should have to bear... a weight no person should have to bear.
A whizzing sound hits my ears. I glance up to see an arrow hitting the Twins. They fall to the floor and split apart into their separate selves. More arrows start whizzing through the air leaving bright sparks of light in their wake.
This looks familiar...
"Your eyes! Cover your eyes!" Deucalion yells. I close my eyes and roll away from Ennis who is busy covering his eyes with his hands.
The arrows stop flying and I look up to see the source. The same silhouette from the school stands on the top floor with a bow in her hand.
The hunter... why is she helping us?
I scramble to my feet and help Cora back to hers. A loud growl sounds from behind me. I turn around to see Scott glaring at Ennis. Scott begins to charge Ennis who charges back. The two begin running at each other with neither of them showing any signs of slowing down.
This isn't good...
Scott and Ennis collide into each other with a deafening, bone-cracking crash. Scott skids backward across the concrete and stops with his legs crouched. He slowly lifts his head. I gasp and take a step back.
That can't be...
There's no way...
Scott's eyes are red. They're glowing red. Alpha red...
He shakes his head and the color goes back to its original amber.
what the hell happened?
While Ennis is busy looking at Scott, Derek comes up behind him and pushes him back. The two begin fighting in a battle of fists and claws. Ennis lands the first slash against Derek's stomach causing him to fall to the ground and roll backward... closer to the edge.
"Derek wait!" I yell out as I move towards them. Isaac places a hand on my shoulder to stop me. "I need to help him."
The two grab onto each other's arms and wrestle their way... moving dangerously closer to the edge. Scott begins crawling his way closer to them. Ennis headbutts Derek causing him to lose his balance...
"Derek!" I yell, pushing Isaac's arm off my shoulder. I run forward as fast as I can. Ennis and Derek hold onto each other's shirts as they wrestle mere inches from the edge. Scott slashes one of Ennis' legs causing him to stumble. Derek turns Ennis towards the edge. Ennis' foot slips...
"Derek!" I yell skidding on the floor and stopping at the edge. I reach my hand out toward him. His fingers graze mine for a split second before he falls. "No!" His body falls through the air, twisting and turning as he struggles to grab onto something. His eyes stay fixed on mine until...
bang
I gasp
His figure lay on the bottom floor. Still. I keep my teary eyes trained on his figure, waiting, hoping for something, for anything. For Derek to move, to get up, to shake off the dust and laugh it off. Or for me to wake up, to realize this is all a bad dream, a nightmare...
but nothing
he doesn't move...
This is real
My brother's dead...
