Chapter 3

"So... can I?" I question Derek the following morning. The two guys helped me bring Cora and Boyd back to Derek's loft. Cora and I slept in the spare room, while Boyd left earlier.

"Why do you even want to go to school?" He puts the book, he was reading, down on the table before looking up into my eyes. "You used to hate school, remember?"

"I still do." I cross my arms over my chest. "But I went to school back in South America and I don't really want to repeat that again."

"Alright." He breathes standing up from his seat and going to fetch his jacket off the bed. "What about Cora?"

"Definitely not," I laugh. "The last thing she wants to do is more work." I still remember all the times she tried to sneak her way into copying my homework or using any excuse she could to leave school early.

"And you do?" He smirks.

"It beats sitting around and doing nothing the whole day," I answer, with a shrug. He leads me outside to his black car. I sit in silence while he drives. I don't really know what to say to him. It's been over six years. What do you say to someone who you haven't seen in so long?

"Thanks again for last night." I blurt out.

"What?" He furrows his brows, he glances at me.

"For helping me gain control." I turn to look at him. "You always knew how to help me."

"I was just passing on my knowledge." He says after a while. "I struggled with it as well, as you know."

"You mean Uncle Peter's knowledge." I smile out of the window. "What happened to Uncle Peter? Is he still alive?"

"Sadly." He sighs his eyes darkening.

"What do you mean 'sadly'?" I furrow my brows.

"It's a... long story." He glances over at me. It's silent for a while as I drift around in my thoughts.

What could Uncle Peter have done? He's one of the only family members I have left. I don't even know who else survived besides him, Derek, Cora, and I... Back when I was at home, Uncle Peter was someone I could always count on. He helped us multiple times on a full moon... what happened?

"Nina." Derek brings me out of my thoughts.

"Yeah." I turn my head back to him.

"Um... what happened to you?" He hesitates.

"Do I look that bad?" I laugh, smelling a strand of my chocolate hair.

"Your eyes." He keeps his own fixed on the road. "What happened to your eyes." My body stiffens knowing full well what he is talking about. I turn my gaze out the window again.

"Are we there yet?" I ask suddenly, still not meeting his eyes. He glances at me for a few seconds before replying.

"Almost." We drive in silence for a few more minutes until he stops the car outside the school. I go to open the door but he grabs my arm. "Look, if you don't wanna talk about it now I understand. But just know that when you're ready, I'm always here."

"Thank you, Derek."

"Okay, I think all that's left is for you to get your books." The administrator says. "You can officially enroll in a few days, but for now feel free to get familiar with the school and mingle."

"Thank you." I smile lightly before turning around and walking to Derek who stands awkwardly, glancing every so often down the hallway. "I'm officially in school... well not officially." Derek keeps his eyes trained down the hallway. I wave my hand in front of his face. "Derek, earth to Derek." He shakes his head and looks at me with raised brows.

"What?" He shrugs.

"Are you okay?" I quirk an eyebrow.

"Yeah, I just- I have something I need to do." He looks down the hallway again. "I'll see you back at the loft." I furrow my brows as he walks down the hallway and around a corner.

"Weird..." I mutter letting out a deep breath.

Now what?

I begin to walk down the empty hallway, stopping near some classrooms to read the teacher's names. I freeze when a familiar voice hits my ears. I turn around and see the same guy from the vault down the hallway. He stops talking with his friend when he notices me staring.

"Who's that?" His friend asks.

"Nina. Derek's sister." He tries to whisper lowly.

"Derek's sister? You mean there's another sourwolf?" His friend exclaims.

"Twins actually," I speak up as I walk up to them. "Hi, I'm Nina." I extend my hand towards the friend.

"Uh...Stiles." He glances at the other guy hesitantly before grabbing my hand.

"Nice to meet you, Stiles." I give his hand a squeeze while holding a smile. He recoils his hand and holds it to his chest.

"Sourwolf." He mutters.

"I heard that."

"I don't think we've officially met." The guy from the vault says. "I'm Scott." I turn my gaze back to him and stare up into his eyes. "Are you enrolling?"

"Yeah... I just finished."

"And your sister?" Stiles asks, still holding his hand.

"Definitely not."

"I meant is she also a raging sourwolf?"

"Well, let me put it this way." I raise my brows, with a smirk. "I'm the nice twin."

"Great." He mutters, tight-lipped.

"McCall! Stilinski!" A voice roars from down the hallway. I spin around and see a man with a whistle around his neck stalking towards us. "Cross-country waits for no one, get a move on!"

"Yes, coach," Scott says nudging Stiles' arm.

"And who's this?" He asks standing in front of me.

"She's a new student," Scott informs, glancing at me.

"Nina Hale."

"Hale? As in the 'Hale' family?" His eyes widen slightly.

"I think so." I furrow my brows.

"You're on the team." He points at me before turning away.

"But- I didn't..."

"If you're a Hale you're on the team. Hales are always the best athletes." He walks into the changing room muttering to himself. "Must be in the genes."

"Congrats." Stiles smiles tightly. "It's not like I had to work my ass off or anything to be in this team." He rambles on.

"So... I'll see you on the track?" Scott says ignoring Stiles.

"Apparently so." I breathe out, still confused about what the hell just happened.

"So... you just run?" I question staring out at the path ahead of me.

"Pretty much." Scott nods slightly. "Just don't use too much werewolf power." I turn my gaze to see Stiles doing stretches and breathing exercises.

"I take it, he's not a werewolf."

"Definitely not." Isaac, the guy with curly hair from last night, says. I nod my head as we watch Stiles trip over his feet. My body suddenly stiffens as I get a whiff of something. Something I never wanted to smell again.

"You okay?" Scott questions as I dart my eyes around the group of teenagers until I spot them. The twins walk confidently to the front of the group. One of them catches my eye and smirks before joining his brother. The whistle blows and everyone begins running forward. The twins dash forward in front of everyone else.

"I'm fine," I grumble before beginning my jog forward.

"Isaac?" I hear Scott ask behind me.

"It's them," Isaac rushes out. Scott calls out after him but Isaac soon runs past me and after the twins. I increase my pace and rush after him. If anyone is going to get those twins, it's going to be me. A hand is suddenly placed on my shoulder. I glance back to see Scott running up behind me.

"Don't do it." He tries.

"They're part of that pack!" I exclaim running ahead of him. "They locked us in there." Scott runs up next to me and follows my pace. We keep running, my eyes darting around the area looking for any sign of the twins. My ears suddenly perk up at the sound of growls.

"Ethan, I always forget, how many bones are there in the human body?" One of the twins asks while smirking down at Isaac who is struggling in their grip.

"I don't know, let's count." Scott runs ahead and punches Ethan in the jaw.

"That's one." He says. The other twin lets Isaac go who scrambles to his feet. The twins share a smirk before Ethan turns his gaze to me.

"I really hope he's okay, Aiden."

"How's your brother doing?" Aiden with a smirk. "I hope Kali hasn't hurt him too much."

"What did you do?" My heart drops. I take a step towards him, but a hand is placed on my shoulder.

"It's not what we did," Ethan smirks. "It's what they'll do."

"I hope Cora doesn't get in the way," Aiden mutters turning to his brother.

"Go." Scott pulls me back before I can charge forward. "We'll take care of them."

I don't need to be told twice.

"Derek!" I storm into the loft. My heart drops as I see him.

He's on his hands and knees with a metal pipe in his back. A pool of blood has formed underneath him. Cora stands by the side with wide eyes which shift towards mine. There are three Alphas in the room. The first one, a big guy who makes Boyd look like a middle-schooler, stands near Cora with his eyes fixed on me. The next is the woman who has claws on both her hands and feet. She holds onto the pipe with a sick smile as she glances towards me. The last one looks the weakest but just his presence alone makes me realize he isn't. He sits on the couch with a cane in his hand as he looks in Derek's direction.

"There's the other one." He says calmly. "Ennis, if you will," I growl and rush forward toward him. He smirks reaching out a clawed hand towards me. I duck underneath it and run at the woman holding Derek. I freeze as something snaps in front of me. The man has his cane extended in front of me, stopping me from moving forward. "Not so fast."

A clawed hand grabs my throat from behind and hoists me up. I gasp for breath, my hands struggling to release myself. He growls as my claws find their way into his hands. He drops me and I turn around to face him with a snarl.

Derek's yell causes me to whip my head around. The woman smirks as she moves the pole around.

"Now, now Kali." The man says taking his seat again. "Be gentle."

"This is me being gentle." She turns her gaze to me. "Try anything again and..." She smiles twisting the pole again.

"Okay." I put my hands up before standing next to a shaky Cora.

"What do you want?" Derek pants out. "You want to kill me?"

"You really think I'm that boring? He scoffs. "Don't throw me in with sociopaths like your uncle." I exchange a glance with Cora.

Sociopath? What did he do?

"I'm a man with far more vision than simple murder, " He continues. "In fact, I'm here to show you just how much vision a blind man can have," He takes off his glasses slowly. His eyes glow a deep red as he stares at Derek who begins to cough up more blood as Kali moves the pole again.

"You're killing him!" Cora yells, grabbing onto my arm.

"Not yet, little sister." Kali waves a finger at her. "But I could." She smiles sadistically. I feel my fingers begin to ache. "Who knows if it's 5 minutes or 5 hours before it's too late to take this thing out," Kali says casually while moving the pole around. I let out a low growl. Kali smiles at me before turning back to the guy in the chair. "But to be on the safe side Deuc, you might want to get to the point,"

"Now you see the one problem with being in an alpha pack. Everybody wants to make the decisions. Me, I'm about discovering new talents. Like you." His eyes move to Derek before glancing over in mine and Cora's direction.

"Not interested." Derek pants out.

"You haven't even heard my pitch."

"You want me...to kill my own pack?" Derek pants out.

"No. I want you to kill one of them." He says casually as if talking about the weather. "Do that and I won't have to ask you to kill the others. You'll do it on your own. I did it, Ennis did, Kali did. Tell him what it's like Kali, to kill one of your own."

"Mmm...liberating." She says smiling up at the ceiling.

"Listen to her Derek. You really want to stay beholden to a couple of maladjusted teenagers, bound to become a liability. And believe me, they will become a liability."

"In fact, I have a feeling one of them is getting themselves into trouble right now." I roll my eyes. That was a setup. The twins were supposed to get us angry. It's all a part of their scheme.

It's definitely working...

"You see, the reason I've always invested in new talents is simple. We all know a pack is strongest due to its individual parts, the stronger the individual parts the greater the whole." He says while flipping out his cane.

"When I lost my sight, one of my Beta's assumed I wasn't fit for the role anymore. He tried to take it from me. Killing him taught me something about alphas I didn't know they could do. His power was added to mine. I became stronger, faster, more powerful than I've ever been. I tested this new ability, to consume the power of your own, by killing another one." He starts folding his cane up again. "In fact, I...I killed them all." He says while smiling. "I took the individual parts and became a greater individual whole." He flicks his cane out again with a loud crack. He bends down and pulls Derek's head up by his hair. He runs his other hand around Derek's face for a few seconds before dropping his head abruptly.

"You're right Kali, he looks like his mother," He looks over at me and Cora before walking towards the window. "You'll get to know me, Derek. Like she did."

"I know you." Derek gets out. "I know what you are." Blood drips from his mouth into the pool of blood under him. "You're a fanatic."

"Know me?" He scoffs putting his cane on the desk. "You've never seen anything like me. I am the alpha of alphas," Lightning cracks outside. "I am the apex of apex predators. I am death destroyer of worlds! I. AM. THE. DEMON. WOLF!" He screams causing the sunglasses he was wearing to crack. Cora ducks behind me as I shakily turn my gaze away from him. He doesn't look like someone you should fear but even the other Alphas in the room seem to be afraid of him.

Kali pulls the pipe roughly from Derek's back. He instantly falls into the puddle of his own blood. The so-called 'Demon Wolf' removes his sunglasses and stares at them.

"I hate it when that happens." He mutters. Kali drops the pole and it falls with a clank. The 'Demon Wolf' stops next to me and Cora. He turns his gaze to look at us with his demonic eyes before grabbing onto Kali's arm and together with Ennis they walk towards the exit as if nothing happened. Cora acts first and immediately runs to Derek's side. I stay frozen in my spot as I watch them leave.

"Who was he?"

"Deucalion."

"...and then they just left?"

"Yeah. They just...left." I breathe in disbelief. "I get that Derek is an Alpha now and that's great but... is he really that powerful?"

"You do realize you're talking about my Alpha?" Isaacs raises an eyebrow

"You do realize that I'm talking about my brother?" I counter. He quirks his head to the side with a shrug.

"Why are the Twins beings such bullies though?" I ask with a sigh. "All they're doing is messing with you guys."

"They transformed into a mutant werewolf creature and tried to murder us." He deadpans.

"They wouldn't have actually murdered you." I roll my eyes. He stares with blank eyes not saying anything. "But continue."

"That doesn't sound like they're messing around." He finishes.

"But if they're going after Derek, why terrorize teenagers?" I run a hand through my hair.

"I don't care what they're doing." Isaac's eyes harden. "They're dead anyway." I don't say anything after that. We all have our reasons for doing things. I don't blame him for wanting them dead. If I ever got ahold of the people responsible for my family's death...

Isaac suddenly furrows his brows and turns to me.

"What?" I question, raising my own.

"You and Cora can't... you know... transform or anything."

"Oh, yeah we do it all the time." I joke. "Instead we turn into a mutant lizard."

"I hate mutant lizards." He mutters, with a shiver.

I don't even want to know what that's about.

"Don't know... we've never tried." I sigh. "Never even thought it was possible, but I don't really want to. The thought of sharing the same brain as her terrifies me." A knock sounds on the door. I look to see Derek standing with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyebrows raised at Isaac.

"Uh-" Isaac gets up off the bed so fast I'm surprised he doesn't have whiplash.

"What do you want Derek?" I ask with an eye roll.

"Isaac, can I speak with you for a moment?" His expression falters.

"Uh-sure." He looks at me before following Derek out the door. I furrow my brows.

I wonder what that was all about.

"What's happening?"

"You're a werewolf, remember?" Cora points to her ears while plopping down on her bed.

"I don't listen in on private conversations... unlike some people," I say pointedly to her. She just rolls her eyes.

"Derek's kicking Isaac out."

"What?" I perk my head up. "Why?"

"He doesn't want Isaac to be in danger." She shrugs.

"But that's stupid. It doesn't matter where he lives. If the Alphas want him dead, then he's dead." I stand up from my bed and stomp to the top of the stairs.

"I don't get it." Isaac walks forward. "Well, did something happen?"

"It's just not going to work with all of you here." Derek keeps his eyes trained outside. "I've got Cora and Nina now. It's too much." I roll my eyes.

don't bring me into this

"I need you out tonight." Derek finishes.

"Where am I supposed to go?" He scoffs in disbelief.

"Somewhere else."

"Did I do something wrong, Derek?" Isaac's voice hardens. Derek turns around to face him.

"You're doing something wrong now by not leaving." Derek points towards the door.

"Oh come on," Isaac mutters.

"Just get out."

"Derek, please."

"Get out."

"Come on." Isaac pleads again.

"Go!" Derek throws the glass in his hand at the beam behind Isaac. It smashes into pieces near his head causing him to cower and hide his face. He freezes for a moment before turning to Derek with a cold look of betrayal in his eyes. Derek's strong facade falters. Isaac wordlessly grabs his bag and walks out of the loft.

"Was that really necessary?" I exclaim as I stomp down the steps.

"I don't want to risk hurting him," Derek says lowly, leaning against the table. "The further he is away from me the better."

"But kicking him out like that? That's just mean, Derek."

"I don't know what they're capable of." Derek sighs. "I don't want to lose another Beta."

"You could've just told him the reason instead of throwing out onto the streets like that." My eyes glance down to the glass shards now littering the floor. "The least you could've done was not throw a glass at him."

"It's done now." He says softly, raising his head slightly. I let out a huff of air before stomping back up to my room.
