Chapter 29
"It all happened so fast..."
"Can you tell me what happened to your neck?" Parrish asks slowly from his spot in front of me with a notebook.
"-You don't know who it was, you never saw their face, okay? " Argent instructs me. He kneels down to my curled-up figure on the floor. "Nina!" He shakes me. "I know this is hard but you have to do it. We have to." His eyes falter for a minute. "Now, repeat it to me."
"One of them came up behind me. They put something sharp against my neck." I fidget with my fingers. "I don't know what it was... a knife maybe? But when-" I close my eyes tightly. "-'It' happened... he let me go, he got scared I guess. I don't know..."
"Anything as you can remember?" Parrish asks gently. I rake my brain. I don't think I could even tell him what really happened if I was allowed to. My brain is a mess of emotions. For the first time, the headache I have isn't caused by supernatural forces but rather by-
I open my eyes slowly. "I can't remember... it all happened so fast."
He closes his book and lifts his eyes to mine. "Thank you." His voice comes out softly.
"Can I go now?" My voice cracks.
He nods. "Nina." He says as I reach the door. " I'm sorry for your loss." I only manage a tight smile before turning around and walking out the doors.
I don't make eye contact with anyone in the room. I can't... I sit down on the bench, taking deep breaths.
Allison is dead...Allison...
It can't be... there's no way
It's Allison. Allison can't be dead
A warm hand is placed on top of my own. I don't even need to look at the face to know whose it is. I look up to his eyes. He doesn't say anything. He keeps his despondent gaze forward. His warm hand still in mine.
"Stiles and Kira said it was the Nemeton that kept it trapped," Scott says as he, Lydia, and I walk into the animal clinic.
"The problem is this isn't even a person you're fighting," Deaton informs us. "It just looks like one. It's a spirit that has taken the shape of a human."
"The shape of my best friend." Scott sighs.
"Someone caught it once." Lydia inputs. "Someone can do it again, right?"
"I don't know." Deaton shakes his head. "This thing was trapped a long time ago before the Nemeton was cut down. It doesn't have the same power anymore."
"Is there anything that does?" Scott asks.
"Possibly." He shrugs. "When the tree was whole, its wood was sometimes used to contain powerful objects."
"Like my mother's claws," I say softly.
"Exactly. Do you have it?"
"Derek does."
"How do you know if it was made out of wood from the Nemeton tree?" Scott asks.
"Because I made it," Deaton confesses.
"I'll call Derek." I grab my phone out of my pocket and walk out of the main clinic into the waiting area.
"Derek," I say, softly.
"Nina... are you okay? I heard what happened."
"I'm fine."
Am I?
"Do you have the triskele box with mom's claws?" I continue.
"Um, yeah. Why?"
"We can trap the nogitsune in there."
"You sure?"
"It will work." I run my hand through my hair. "Can you bring the box... I don't know where we're going to meet yet but I'll let you know."
"Okay..." He pauses. "Nina, are you sure you're okay? Maybe you should sit this one out?"
"No!" I say louder than I expected. I clear my throat. "No, I'm okay. Thank you." I hang up the phone. My breath begins to pick up as a lump forms in my throat.
It's all too much...Death...Allison...Laura...My mom...My dad...
My head starts spinning as flashes of Allison's face and flames swim around my vision. Intermixing into one. My heart starts pounding.
I can't
I put my hand against the wall to steady myself. A warm hand is placed on my shoulder. I flinch and jump around.
"Scott." His eyes soften before he wraps his arms around me and brings me into his embrace. His warmth wraps around me like a blanket. Keeping me safe.
"Are you okay?" He whispers.
"I should be asking if you're okay." I breathe as I hold him tight. He stiffens but doesn't say anything. The room is filled with tense silence before a gasp is heard from the other room. We pull apart and rush towards the sound.
"What happened?" Scott asks.
"Something's happening," Lydia says with wide eyes. "I had this sudden rushing feeling like we're running out of time."
"Yeah." A voice sounds from behind us. I turn around to see Kira supporting Stiles. "Yeah, I kind of got that feeling too." Stiles continues.
"So what's the plan?" I ask.
We discuss it further in detail but I can't help this sinking feeling in my chest. We get into the jeep and begin our ride to the school. I take out my phone and send a text to Derek to let him know the plan. After a few minutes, my phone beeps.
"Is Derek coming?" Scott asks from the front of the jeep.
"Yes, and the Twins. They're going to meet us there." I answer before returning my gaze out the window. We eventually arrive at the school and pile out of the jeep. Lydia supports Stiles as we walk to the entrance of the school. My chest aches the closer we get to the building. My insides feel like they're twisting together with every step.
I stop walking and stare at the doors. "Nina?" Scott questions, staying behind.
"I can't," I say with wide eyes. "I can't be around him, Scott. He did something to me earlier and it terrified me. He can do it again... and-"
"If you want to go back, you can."
"I don't wanna go back. I wanna help... but I don't wanna hurt you. Any of you." My voice cracks. I take a deep breath before grabbing his hand. "If something happens and he manages to get me again. You need to promise me something."
"What?" He says softly.
"Kill me." I look into his eyes. "Don't let me hurt anyone."
His eyes widen. "Nothing's going to happen, okay." He cups my face. "Nothing."
"Scott, Promise me." I persist. "Please. I don't know what will happen if he manages to finish what he started. But I know it won't be good."
"I'm not going to kill you."
"Promise me." I grab his hand. He looks at me for a while. His eyes shifting between my own.
"I promise." He says softly. I smile tightly before joining the others. "Okay, let's go," Scott mutters, making a move to open the door.
"Scott, hold on." Stiles interjects. "I know what you're all thinking, that if this works it might kill me too. But even if it does, you have to go through with it." Scott's eyes drift to mine for a moment before returning to Stiles.
"Stick with the plan, okay." Stiles finishes.
"The plan is to save you." Scott says firmly. "That's the plan I'm going with." He glances at me for a second before opening the doors.
My eyes furrow as we step into a snowy landscape...
What?
Snow and white trees cover the room. There are rocks layered out on the ground but also a bridge at the back of the room and benches laid out. Like a park in winter...
What?
I take slow steps into the room looking around the landscape. It's beautiful but it feels twisted and evil and the same time. I wrap my arms around myself as the cold surrounds me.
The doors slam shut behind us. "Well, this is definitely not part of the plan," Stiles says voicing all of our thoughts. Light snow falls into Kira's outstretched palm.
"What is going on?" I mutter staring at this strange place. Footsteps sound by the door. I turn around and it feels like my heart stops. "No..." My breathing picks up as I stare at the bandaged man. "I-it can't be." He stumbles towards us. Kira unsheathes her katana.
"Nina." He turns his head towards me slowly. "Good to see you again."
"It's you." My voice comes out weaker than I had hoped. "You're... you're him."
"The Nogitsune," Stiles says taking a step next to me. "How do you know him?"
"He was one in my nightmares... he was the one controlling my shifting. It's always been you."
The same dark spirit possessing Stiles was the same one taunting me all this time. He was the Nogitsune.
The Nogitsune?  Why don't I have a headache? If I'm this close to the Nogistune's true form I would have thought the pain would've been unbearable but...nothing
"Suprise...But this isn't about you right now." His rough, slurring voice sounds. A shiver runs down my spine. "Like I promised, Stiles." "We're going to kill all of them. One by one." Dark smoke suddenly appears. The Oni form and begin to slash their swords. Kira acts fast and deflects a sword coming her way. They surround us as we take a few steps back. There are two in front of us and two behind us. We're trapped.
"What the hell is? Where are we?" Scott asks with furrowed brows
"Between life and death." He answers.
"Bardo." Lydia answers.
"But there are no peaceful deities here, Lydia." He raises a finger. "You're dying, Stiles. " Scott looks to his best friend who stiffens under those words. "And now everyone you care about is dying too."
"What? What do you mean?" Stiles asks.
"I've captured almost all the territories on the board, Stiles." He says. "The hospital, The sheriff's station, and now the animal clinic."
Mrs. McCall... Mr. Stilinksi... Deaton
"Do you know the ritual of the Seppuku, Stiles?" He asks, stalking around us.
"No, and I don't want to." He answers holding Lydia.
"When a Samurai disembowels himself with his own sword to maintain his honor. But that's not the cut that kills him. The killing stroke is made by his Kaishakunin, who beheads the Samurai with his own katana. Scott..." He drawls out. "Scott is your Kaishakunin." Scott stiffens as he turns to his best friend. "I'm going to make your best friend kill you, Stiles. And you're going to let him." He stumbles towards Stiles, closing the gap. "Because just like you, they're all going to die. Everyone touched by an Oni's blade." He walks closer to Stiles and raises a finger to him. "Unless Scott kills you first."
"Why?" Stiles trembles. "Why are you doing this?"
"To win the game." The Oni raise their swords and point them at us. My eyes stare transfixed on the sharp blade...Allison's face suddenly pops into my mind. Her wide eyes as the sword was rammed into her chest...
I growl and approach one of the Oni first, followed by Scott and Kira. I slash at with all my might. I bring up my other hand and slash at its stomach. It doesn't do much but it's distracted. I take this chance to push it down to the floor. I get on top of it and begin slashing at its chest.
"Nina! Look out!" Lydia cries. I look back up just in time to see a sword fly toward my face. Blood runs down my cheek as I fall next to the other oni. The new one then walks up to me and aims its sword at my chest. I roll away and get back to my feet. I growl and charge at it. I punch its mask as hard as I can.
I hear a crack
But it wasn't the mask.
I cry out and cradle my hand as pain radiates from my thumb and up my hand. It takes its chance and points the sword at my neck. I walk backward until I bump into someone else.
"Stiles no!" Scott screams. I follow his gaze and see Stiles holding a katana to his stomach. "Stiles." Scott breaks free from the oni's hold.
"What if it saves you? What if it saves all of you?"
"That's what he wants." I fret.
"What if it's just another trick?" Lydia panics.
"No more tricks, Lydia." He says.
"Like we're going to believe you." I glare at the Nogitsune.
"No more tricks." He repeats. "End it, Scott. Let your friend fall on his own sword. Do for him what he cannot do for himself."
No one moves.
"Do it, Scott. Be his Kaishakunin." He hisses. Stiles shakily holds the katana to his stomach. "Give up the game." Stiles keeps staring at the katana before his eyes furrow. He stops shaking and just stares at it. He looks to the side before looking straight at the Nogistune. "You have no moves left."
"I do." Stiles gives one last look to the katana in his hands before tossing it back to Kira. "A divine move." He grabs onto Lydia and looks around the room at us.
"Stop fighting them. It's an illusion." He rushes out. "You have to stop fighting them."
An illusion?
Everything feels so real... from the chill of the snow to the pain from my sliced cheek and broken thumb... it can't be an illusion.
"It looks real and it feels real, but Scott you gotta trust me, it's an illusion."
If it's an illusion then that means that not really the true Nogitsune. It's just an illusion.
That explains the headache...
The oni line up in two rows with the Nogitsune in the middle in front of the door.
It's a trial
Scott walks first. He goes through the arch of Oni. The first one attacks and slashes Scott on the chest. Scott cries out but presses forward. I follow after him. The same oni slashes at my arm causing me to gasp at the pain.
Is this really an illusion?
Scott presses on and so I do. Their swords slash and slice at my skin. Blood stains the once pristine white snow. Kira cries out behind me as we keep walking.
I press forward.
Another slice. My back stings.
I press forward.
My stomach. My leg. My arm.
My clothes feel soaked with blood as my entire body stings. Scott reaches the Nogitsune and grabs him. He pushes it through the door with a roar. The doors swing open revealing the inside of the school...
It was an illusion.
I look at my body. No blood. No ripped clothes. I touch my cheek but there's no blood. I inspect my thumb but it looks normal. No swelling, no bruising. My head does begin to ache though...
"We're okay." Scott breathes. "We'r-" Scott is thrown across the hallway and into the lockers. He falls to the floor unconscious. Stiles, the Nogitsune, smiles at Kira before knocking her unconscious.
He turns his gaze to me. "Hello again, Nina." He stalks towards me. I motion for Lydia and Stiles to run away. "We never did get to finish what we started."
"Just leave me alone!" I yell at him. "Why do you need me?"
"I don't need you." He scoffs as my back hits the locker's behind me. "You think I need anyone? I want you on my team. There's a difference." He grabs a strand of my hair. "You may be the queen but I'm still the king." He smiles. "I don't need you to win the game but... it adds a nice touch." He grabs my arm roughly before turning to face Lydia and Stiles who have managed to move a bit away now.
My breathing starts to pick up as I feel the same thing happen again. It's like all my insides are being sucked away. But there's no pain. Actually, it doesn't hurt at all. Everything goes away. You feel like an empty shell...
"This was my game." He hisses. He drags me along as he stalks towards them. "You think you can beat me at my own game?" He smirks. He glances at me before tossing me to the ground. "She's ready."
I stand up from the floor. Lift my head up and stare at Lydia and Stiles in front of me. I begin to shift. My teeth grow into fangs with the canines protruding further than the rest. My eyes become cool. My claws grow sharper, longer, and darker.
I feel euphoric. No pain. No emotions. I just feel the power.
"The queen everyone." He walks over to the side of me and whispers in my ear. "I helped you...now you help me."
I growl as I stalk towards them.
Stiles puts Lydia behind him as they scurry away. "Nina! This isn't you!" Lydia shouts. I don't stop. I keep charging at them until I'm able to grab Stiles by the shirt.
"Lydia! Go!" Stiles yells out, but she doesn't move. I raise the claws of my other hand up.
"Think about Allison!" Lydia yells. I falter. "He killed Allison and you're just going to follow him?"
Allison...
My hand begins to lower. My grip loosens. A hand grabs onto my arm and pulls me back. Scott growls at me. I growl back and slash at his chest.
He dodges.
I kick him in his chest.
He stumbles.
I try to slash him again.
He jumps back.
"Fight me!" I growl out. I try to punch him but he grabs my fist and pushes me against the locker.
"I'm not going to fight you," He stares at me. I growl back at him as he grabs my arms and traps me against the lockers. I struggle against him and manage to loosen one of my hands enough to grab onto his arm. My claws dig into his arm as I feel the blood dripping down my hands. He cries out with pained eyes. I try to get out of his grip but he's stronger. I try to bite him with my fangs but I can't. I try to kick him but he's holding me in place.
"Come on, Alpha!" I yell. "Is that all you got? No wonder you can't save everyone."
He falters. I see my chance and loosen my other hand enough to claw into his arm. Blood drips down from his arms as his red eyes gleam into my own.
"She's a monster isn't she?" The Nogitsune stalks towards him. "She won't stop until she gets what she wants...well what I want." He smirks before it drops. "Now kill her." Scott's eyes soften.
"What?" He manages to get out.
"She's a monster now...nothing more than a rabid animal. Kill her. You have no other choice." He stares at me as I struggle. My claws dig deeper into his arms but he never moves his eyes from mine.
"Nina," Scott whispers. "I know you're in there," I growl in response. "Don't listen to him. Listen to me, Nina it's me."
"She's not going to listen." He smirks. "You know what you have to do. Put her down, Scott"
Scott stares straight into my eyes. "Nina..." He trails off. "I'm sorry." His eyes harden. He roars as he rips his arms away from my claws before grabbing my neck and slamming me against the floor. My head hits the ground hard and my vision begins to swirl. I manage to scramble to my feet and run feebly at him. He grabs me and pushes me against the locker. "I'm sorry." He whispers as he digs his claws into my side. I gasp as the pain hits me immediately. He pulls his claws away as I fall to the ground.
"Didn't think you had it in you."
Everything comes back. It's like a switch was turned when he stabbed me. It feels like a faucet was turned on and everything is being put back inside me. I feel whole again. Human.
"Scott..." I whisper. His eyes widen as he stares at my figure on the floor. The Nogitsune suddenly grabs Scott from behind and knocks him unconscious again.
"Have to do everything myself." He grumbles before turning to a very stunned Lydia and Stiles.
"Go." I try to yell, but it's nothing more than a whisper.
My eyes roll back as everything goes dark.
"Nina?"
I open my eyes slowly to see a familiar face.
"Derek?"Â My voice cracks.
"It's me." He smiles, but it seems off.
"What happened?" I ask, sitting up straighter. "Where is everybody? Where is-ow!" I put my hand over my side.
"Careful, you're still hurt." He gently lifts me up.
"What happened, Derek?" I ask again more forcefully. He looks away from my eyes for a moment before meeting them again.
"We won." He doesn't smile.
My stomach turns into knots. "Why don't I believe you."
"Aiden's dead." He says after a while.
Aiden's dead? Aiden can't be dead... He was a difficult person that's for sure but... it's Aiden. It's the Twins.
Ethan...
"Wha-what happened?" I breathe out.
"He killed the last oni." Derek says. "And the last oni killed him."
Killed by the Oni... by the Nogitsune.
I punch the locker next to me.
"Nina..."
"Why does everyone have to die, Derek?" My voice quivers, but not because I'm sad. I'm angry. Angry that we tried so hard to save lives but we ended up losing people close to us.
Is it really worth it?
"You can't save everyone."
I look up at him with hard eyes. "We need to."
"I don't know what to say." I don't meet their eyes.
"You don't have to say anything." Argent looks at me with hard eyes, but it falters every now and then.
"Allison was an amazing person, you know that more than anyone." He doesn't respond. Neither does Isaac. "She respected you a lot, you know," I say to Argent. "She wanted to be like you...she was proud." Argent looks away and walks into his office. Isaac looks down at his feet. "Isaac." His eyes move to mine. "I'm sure you already knew but... she really cared about you. Her eyes always lit up whenever she spoke about you." He smiles softly, his eyes gazing into the distance.
"Thank you, Nina." He says softly. My eyes glance around the room and stop on bags packed in the hallway.
"You're leaving?"
"We both are," Argent says walking back into the room with pieces of paper in his hand. I nod in understanding. I don't blame them for wanting to leave. Argent lost his whole family in Beacon hills and Isaac... he doesn't really have a family anymore.
"I found this earlier today." He hands me the stack of paper. "I think Allison would want you to have it." I take the papers and page through them briefly
History...Emotions...Control...Dark Energy...Åkami...
I feel tears begin to prick my eyes. "She was doing research about Okamis," Argent says softly. I hold the pages tightly in my shaky hands as if they were the most precious thing in the world.
Allison was doing research for me? She did this all to help me...
I pull Argent into a hug. "Thank you," I whisper.
"Don't thank me. It was Allison." I don't respond instead my eyes glance over to the bags in the corner of the room. "Are you really leaving?" I pull away from him. He glances over to Allison's room before nodding.
"I don't blame you. I just... I'll miss you. Both of you."
"You're a good kid." He smiles, patting my shoulder.
"Goodbye Argent." I walk over to Isaac and give him a hug. "Goodbye, Isaac. Stay safe." I begin to walk away but pause in front of the door. I turn back around to them. "I'll see you again," I say determinedly.
Argent smiles. "Goodbye, Nina."
Time seems to drag on after that. I feel like I'm on autopilot. Not really present but still walking, still breathing. I haven't seen Scott since it happened. Partly because I don't know what to say to him but also because I want to give him space. He's been through a lot. We all have.
IÂ grab a few remaining books from my locker before turning away and walking down the hall. My heart drops as I see Ethan walking down the hall away from Danny. He catches my eyes briefly before walking past me.
"Hey, Ethan," I say grabbing onto his arm. I look into his eyes and I suddenly don't know what to say. "I'm sorry." I blurt out.
"Thank you, Nina." He says with soft eyes.
"I know Aiden and I never saw eye-to-eye but... I respect him. What he did..." I trail off, not knowing how to finish my sentence.
"He would've liked to hear that." He smiles lightly.
"I know how hard it must be." I look into his eyes. "I have a twin too, you know. I couldn't imagine losing her." The thought alone is enough to send shivers down my spine. I couldn't imagine living without Cora. I haven't seen her in a while but I know she's okay.
He keeps his gaze on me before I bring him into a hug.
I'm hugging a lot of people today
We don't say anything. I already know what is going through his mind. Losing a twin is worse than losing a limb. You lose a part of yourself. A part you can never get back. No matter how hard you try. You have to learn to live without it. But life will never feel the same. You always feel this hole in your heart... I hope I will never have to go through that nor Cora.
My palms feel sweaty as I wipe them on my jeans. It's now or never. I need to talk to him. I take a deep breath before bringing my hand to the door. It takes a few moments before Scott's face is in front of me.
"Nina." He smiles as he opens the door.
"Is your mom home?" I ask as I walk inside the house after him.
"No, double shift." No one says anything for a while as I look at the floor. "I haven't seen you in a while." He speaks up.
"I wanted to give you space after... everything." I breathe out looking at him. "How are you?" He nods in response, looking away from my eyes.
"I'll be okay." He simply says. "Are you?"
"I'm okay... all healed now." He glances down at my side with an unknown expression before meeting my eyes.
"I was just about to have some food, do you want any?" He asks walking to the fridge.
"How can you do it?" I ask suddenly, surprising myself.
"Uhh, It's...leftovers."
"No, I mean with us. How can you act like everything's okay." I can't meet his eyes. "After what I did." I glance down at his arms. The faint claw marks are still present.
Shouldn't they have healed by now? It's been days...
His eyes follow my own as he swiftly pulls the sleeves of his shirt down. "It's okay." He smiles, walking over to me. "I know it wasn't you."
I lift the one sleeve of his shirt up and run my fingers over the faint marks. "I'm sorry," I whisper, my voice sounding weaker than I had anticipated.
"I should be sorry too." He puts his hand on my side, rubbing circles over the skin. "For what I did."
"You had no other choice." I finally look up into his eyes.
"I thought I almost killed you."
"You were supposed to kill me." He tries to look away from me but I bring his eyes back to mine. "You promised."
"There's always another way. Pain makes you human, remember?" He lets out a breath when I don't respond. "You said I mustn't let you hurt anyone, and you didn't."
"I hurt you!" I say surprising myself with how loud my voice became. "I hurt you, Scott. And I almost hurt Stiles and Lydia." He cups my cheek with his hand.
"That wasn't you, okay. We'll figure it out." He smiles lightly. "I won't let that happen to you again."
"Everyone always says that," I say rolling my eyes. "But every time it ends up happening."
"We know what you are now so we can do our research." He offers. "I'll be here with you all the way."
"I don't want you to be there. I-I can't take that risk."
"What do you mean?" He furrows his brows.
"I don't trust myself. I'm too weak. I couldn't resist him." I ramble. "Hell, Allison died because I was too weak." I feel anger swell inside me. "I couldn't protect myself so she saved me. She saved me and now she's dead!" I turn away from him and run a hand through my hair.
"It wasn't your fault." His voice stiffens. "Allison was killed by the Nogitsune."
My heart drops, "I'm sorry," I mutter, turning back to his puppy eyes. "I shouldn't have brought that up."
"It's okay." He whispers.
"No, it's not...nothing's okay." I ran my hand over my face. My head swirls with so many emotions, so many thoughts it feels like it could explode.
It's all too much...It's too unfair
I look up into his eyes. Those beautiful innocent eyes. "I don't know if can do this anymore," I mutter.
"Do what?"
"Us" My voice comes out weak.
"Why?" His eyes widen. "Is this because of what happened to you at the school?"
"I won't lie and say it had nothing to do with it, but that's not the only reason. You just lost Allison, and I... I need to figure myself out. The Nogitsune was able to do that to me and that terrifies me. What stops the next dark entity from doing the same thing? I need to learn how to control it. And how to protect myself, so that no one gets hurt. How can I love you when I'm like this? How I can keep you safe."
"I can help you. That's what love is all about.'
"That's not fair on you. You're dealing with your own problems. I can't put that weight on you... I can't."
"Then I can give you some space." He grabs my hand and brings me closer to him. "If that's what need."
"I think we need more than some space, Scott." My throat gets tight. "I don't wanna give you the whole 'it's not you, it's me' speech but... it's not you, it's me." He doesn't say anything but continues to stare at me with his puppy eyes. "After everything that happened, I need to learn to control it. I need to figure out what it is exactly. And you... you just lost someone you loved...It's not the right time." He brings me into an embrace still not saying anything. "Say something, Scott," I whisper.
He pulls away from me and looks into my eyes. "I don't wanna lose you." He gently tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. "But if that's what you want."
"I don't want to, Scott. But I can't be unfair to you. It's not the right time." I put my hand on his cheek. "You're a good person. You're too good for me." I whisper. I run my thumb over his lips. "Goodbye, Scott."
I step away from him slowly. I begin to walk away but my steps are slow. It feels like a magnet is pulling me back to him. Telling me to turn around and kiss him. To tell him I was just kidding and go back to what we were.
What we were...
I know that I'm making the right decision to break up with him. It doesn't feel like the right choice right now as I walk away from his adorable brown eyes but I know I need to do this. I can't love him when I don't even trust myself around him or anyone for that matter. I need to work on myself first before I can treat him the way he deserves and besides he's still mourning.
I turn back one last time before I reach the door. Feeling a lump in my throat when I see his expression. His eyes are downturned and his bottom lip juts out. He looks just like a kicked puppy. I turn away as I feel a tear trickle down my cheek. I hastily wipe it before leaving the house and leaving Scott behind.
I get back to the loft with a heavy feeling on my chest. Every step feels like I have an anchor strapped to my ankles. I enter the loft doors and look around the empty room.
"Derek." I try to yell but it comes out more like a cry. Derek's head pops out from the balcony.
"Nina?" He walks over to me with a concerned look etched onto his face. "What happened?"
"Nothing. I'm fine." I try my best to smile but I'm sure it wasn't anything close to that.
"No, you're not." He quirks an eyebrow. "Did you forget that I'm a werewolf?"
"I broke up with Scott." My voice cracks as I say the words.
I broke up with Scott. It's over...
The lump in my throat grows as tears begin to prick my eyes. "It's over."
The tears begin to flow. I don't even try to stop it. I don't even know what I'm truly crying about. I know part of it's for Scott, that's for sure. But the other part... Allison, Aiden. So much has happened in these last few days that I'm surprised that it has taken me this long to break down.
I've dealt with loss before. I've lost my entire family in a fire, but this time feels different. This time it feels like there's a knife in my heart. I feel responsible. I feel like it's all my fault. If I was stronger, faster...
Derek immediately wraps me in a hug.
"It'll all be okay. I promise." He runs a hand through my hair. "I'll always be here for you"
"So... let me get this straight: You're asking me, your so-called 'psychotic uncle', to help you."
"Yep. I've run out of options, you see." I fidget with my fingers.
"Ah, so I'm the last one you turn to then." He scoffs.
"Well, you said it yourself: You're my 'psychotic uncle'." I smile slightly.
"Okay." He crosses his arms. "So let's say I agree to help you. What exactly do you need my help with?"
"I need help controlling my emotions."
"And you think I know how to do that?"
"No, of course not." I scoff. "That's where Derek comes into play. You, however... I need you to teach me how to be a better Werewolf."
"Interesting." He raises his eyebrows.
"So, will you help me?" He rubs his chin before turning back to me with a smile that makes me regret even asking him in the first place.
"Anything for my dear niece."
