Chapter 21
"His eyes were glowing," Scott says as we sit in Argent's office. Allison cleans the blood from her father's face from when she found him unconscious on the floor.
"They looked like fireflies," I add remembering those piercing yellow eyes I saw only a few hours ago.
"There was something almost ritualistic about it. Like it was looking right into his soul." Argent says as he begins to tell the story of when he first encountered the dark figures.
"That's the same thing it did to me," Isaac says sitting on the table.
"That's what it did to everyone," Allison adds.
"Well, not everyone," I say from my spot against the wall. I share a glance with Scott. "Not yet anyway," I add under my breath.
"They only came after the werewolves," Scott looks back to Argent.
"And Lydia."
"Anyone with a connection to the supernatural," Argent says.
"Then who's the guy they went after in Japan?" Isaac questions referring back to the story Argent was telling.
"A Kumicho. A Yakuza boss. It was my first gun deal. I was only 18 and it was supposed to be a simple exchange. Except Gerard left out the minor detail of the buyers being Yakuza. He wanted to see if I could adapt in the moment. Testing my ability to improvise."
"Or your ability to survive," Allison adds. I don't understand how someone could put their own son in a position like that. I've never met the guy and I'd like to keep it that way.
"The moment the sun went down it was like they just materialized out of the shadows. They had swords, not curved like katanas but straight, black steel. Like ninjas."
"What did they want?" Scott asks.
"To get to the Kumicho. They cut down every living thing in their way."
"Did they mark them as they did us?" Isaac asks rubbing the mark behind his ear.
"Not Exactly." Argent looks down at the table in deep thought. "Let's just say, he wasn't walking away after that."
"What was he?" Scott asks.
"I don't know. But there might be someone who does. There were a few others who survived that night. One of them was a man named Katashi. They called him Silverfinger because of an unusual prosthetic. And it looked like he was getting ready to take them all on himself. So I fought back." He clears his throat. "I've known for a while Katashi was in the country. I spent yesterday tracking him down."
"Didn't look like he wanted to be found," Isaac says referring to the stitches Argent now has on his temple.
"Not particularly, no."
"So you think he knows what they are? Or what they want?" Scott leans forward.
"Maybe"
"What if he doesn't want to talk?" Allison questions leaning on the table.
"What if he doesn't even remember you?" Isaac adds. Argent gets out of his chair and walks towards the wooden box sitting on his desk. He turns it around and opens it.
"He'll remember this." I lean forward over the desk and peek inside the box. There is a black shattered mask inside. The mask of those dark figures.
"How did you get this?" I ask in disbelief.
"I shot one of them that night in the face. The mask shattered." Scott picks up one of the pieces and examines it. "I know I didn't kill it. I don't think you can." Argent continues. "But I slowed it down long enough for us to get out of there."
"What was behind the mask?" Scott questions, squinting his eyes at the piece in his hand.
"Darkness. Absolute darkness."
That was enough to send a shiver down my spine.
After a few more discussions, Scott leaves to get ready for school while I go to get a change of clothes. I begin putting some clothes and extra stuff in my bag. I have to start packing at some point. I grab my jacket off the chair and head out to the elevator. I'm about to leave the apartment when I hear Allison, Isaac, and Argent talking in the office.
I peek my head around the corner. "I'm going to be off now, don't want to be late." My eyes fall onto an antique gun sitting in a glass container on the side table. I take a step into the office."What are you guys planning?"
"We're going to talk to Katashi, find out what he knows," Argent says folding his arms over his chest.
"Do you think he'll talk?"
"We're going to make a plan. He'll talk." Isaac says slightly smirking while glancing at Allison. Allison catches his eyes and they stare at each other for a few seconds before she looks down. I furrow my brows.
What happened between those two?
"Do you need any help, cause I can ditch school if-"
"It'll be fine. It's dangerous enough bringing these two along." Argent says motioning towards them on either side of the desk.
"If you need any help, just call." I smile and walk to the elevator making sure to grab my helmet off the table before I go.
I reach my motorbike as a smile overtakes my face. I love how free it makes you feel. It makes all your problems feel so small and insignificant. I put my helmet on and take off. As I get halfway towards the school I spot the familiar green motorbike.
I let out a laugh before driving up next to him. I rev my engine and he turns in my direction. I rev my motorbike again as I start overtaking him. I hear him rev his engine again and I soon see him come up beside me and go in front of me.
I smirk behind my helmet and overtake him again. This continues for another few minutes before I hear the sound of two other motorbikes coming up beside us. I stare at them in confusion before I realize who they are. I roll my eyes as I speed down next to Scott away from the Twins. But they keep on our tail until we reach the school. I park my motorbike next to Scott and take my helmet off.
"Seriously guys?" I roll my eyes.
"You gonna be doing this all day?" Scott asks glancing at both twins.
"All day" Ethan states with a smirk.
"All night" Aiden finishes.
"Is this about being in my pack?"
"This is about you being the target of demonic ninjas,"
"You mean the demonic ninjas that pulled swords out of their chest and completely kicked our asses?" Ethan says looking over at his brother.
"Yeah, those demonic ninjas,"
"I don't need anyone to protect me,"
"And what about Nina?"
"Nina can protect herself, thank you very much," I say as I roll my eyes.
"They were looking right at you when the sun came up," Ethan states looking at Scott.
"And they also disappeared. Argent thinks that they could just come out at night."
"Since this is our first experience with demonic ninjas, we're thinking we should play it safe," Ethan says.
"All day," Aiden adds.
"And all night." Scot grudging finishes.
"Wait a minute," I say as they all begin to get up. "Then why are you guys following me? I'm not an Alpha or anything so protecting me won't do anything for you."
"We're looking out for the Alpha," Aiden says first looking at Scott then at me. "But since you're the Alpha's girl..." He smirks.
"We thought it would be smart to include you in the deal too." Ethan finishes. I roll my eyes at the two but I can't stop the smile from taking over my lips. I get off the motorbike, holding my helmet in my left arm. I begin walking to the school alone but Scott slips his hand into mine. I stop and turn my head to look at him
He leans down and whispers into my ear. "I guess you're the Alpha's girl." I nudge my shoulder into him, but I can't stop the smiles overtaking my lips as we walk into the school together.
Once inside, I grudgingly let go of his hand, already missing the warmness of his touch, and go to my locker across from his. I open it to get the books I need out, making sure to listen to what's happening with Scott and the twins.
"Okay, one thing first. I need to talk to Stiles and let him know everything that happened last night. Without you."
"No," Aiden says sharply.
"Yes," Scott says equally as sharp. "And I don't want you listening in. No wolf hearing."
"How would you even know?" Aiden questions.
"I'm a true Alpha." I can hear the smirk in his voice. "You have no idea what I can do."
I send the twins a smirk as I follow Scott to go talk to Stiles. We find him further in the hallway and he immediately starts rambling on about what happened to him last night as he takes us to the science lab.
"-so then she starts talking about phosphors and the key having chemicals on it, right?" He begins walking towards the blackboard in the room. Scott and I stay at the back of the class. I furrow my brows as I try to figure out where he's going with this. "And so that made me think of the chemistry closet and the fact that someone had to let Barrow in..." Stiles freezes as he stares at the blackboard.
"Stiles?" I question as I put a hand to my newly aching head.
"It's gone. Okay, it doesn't matter though. It doesn't matter. I've still got the key." Stiles walks quickly over to the chemistry closet door. He fiddles with the keys on the chain, but freezes. "What the hell? I had it, I had it here. I had it here this morning, I swear to God, I had it this morning."
"The key you were talking about last night?"
"Yeah, I showed it to you, right?" He asks, looking up at Scott. "Didn't I show it to you?"
"Wait is this about the key I saw you with last night?" I ask.
"Yes, yes you saw it? You know I had it." Stiles asks frantically.
"Yes I saw it," I tell Stiles. "It looked like a normal key to me."
"It wasn't a normal key. Normal keys don't just appear and vanish."
"Are you sure it wasn't just one of your other keys?" Scott reasons.
"No it's not one of these keys," Stiles says holding up the chain, his frantic eyes dart to me. "Nina, you saw the key, It wasn't one of these?" He hands me the key chain.
I skim through them. "I don't know, Stiles." I spot one that looks vaguely familiar. "It could've been this one. I don't know."
Stiles takes the key from me. "No this is my house key. It was a different key, I know it." He turns back to the blackboard. "I was here a couple of hours ago." He begins walking to the blackboard. "And the message left to Barrow, spelling Kira's name, was right there on the board in my handwriting and I had the key to the chemistry closet."
"So you unlocked the chemistry closet so Barrow could hide away from the cops," Scott says slowly, furrowing his brows. "And then you wrote him a message to kill Kira?"
"That's the craziest thing I've heard." I shake my head. "You wouldn't do that, Stiles."
"I know how it sounds... but look at this." Stiles pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket. "This is a news report that came out about Barrow when they caught him, okay? About the shrapnel bomb that he used. See this? See what he did?" Stiles asks becoming more frantic. "He put nuts, bolts, and screws." He says slowly. "And then he hid the bomb and the detonator in a box that he wrapped as a birthday present. What does that sound like to you?"
"Coach. The joke we played on the Coach."
"That was my idea. You remember? That was my idea."
"That doesn't mean anything." I put a hand on his shoulder. "It's just a coincidence. A big coincidence. But still a coincidence." The pain in my head begins to fade.
"That's no coincidence. It can't be."
"I don't want to sound like I'm trying to tell you that you're wrong. But I don't think you're trying to kill people either." Scott looks at him with soft eyes.
"I agree with Scott on that one." Stiles doesn't say anything. He turns back to the blackboard as he crushes the paper in his hand.
"It was here. It was all here." He whispers to himself.
"Dude, are you feeling okay? You're looking really tired."
"And crazy," I mutter under my breath. Scott darts his eyes to me.
Stupid werewolf hearing
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just haven't been sleeping really..."
"Why don't you go home? Take a sick day or something." Scott suggests looking at Stiles with worry.
"But the key-"
"Was probably your house key, okay? It was late, just leave it." I say pinching the bridge of my nose.
Stiles nods grudgingly. "Okay." He whispers. He gives us one last glance before walking out the door.
I go to leave after him but Scott grabs my arm, "Nina, I need to talk to you." I turn back around to him.
"What?"
"Are you okay? You seem a little different than usual."
"I'm fine, Scott."
He quirks an eyebrow, "Then what was that back there?"
"What was what?" I ask shrugging my shoulders.
"You know what." He asks, looking into my eyes.
"I didn't mean to call him crazy. I just... I snapped. I'm sorry."
"You don't usually get annoyed at Stiles like that."
"I know I just... I don't know. Maybe it's the lake of sleep."
He puts a hand on my shoulder, "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yes, Scott. I am perfectly fine." I wrap my hands around his neck and bring his lips to mine. "Don't worry about it."
The door suddenly opens. "What happen- Get a room!" Aiden rolls his eyes.
"We did," I say stepping away from Scott.
"What happened with Stiles?" Ethan asks from beside Aiden.
"That's none of your business," Scott says walking past them as I follow behind.
"Well, did you tell him?" Ethan asks him as we walk down the corridor.
"No. He's got enough on his mind right now."
"If they're coming for you in a few hours then so do you," Aiden says looking at him.
"What if it's not me? Okay? What if I'm not the one they want?" Scott pauses before he turns to me, followed by the Twins.
"Don't look at me. I'm just a Beta." I put my hands up.
"Okay, then who else?" Ethan asks. Scott turns around towards the stairs. His gaze tunes in on something as he tenses. I follow his gaze and see Kira.
They want Kira.
"Ready?"
"Ready," I reply getting onto my motorbike. I put my helmet on, just as the twins get onto theirs.
"Guys, I appreciate you wanting to protect us. But we have to be alone for a bit."
"Oh really?" Aiden says with a smirk. I roll my eyes.
"So sorry about this." Scott finishes.
"I'm not," I smirk. Scott starts his bike and drives off. The twins try to start their bikes, but they won't go.
"Yeah... you might want these." I lift my hand up showing the missing pieces to their bikes. Aiden tries to grab it from me, but I quickly stuff them in my pocket. "Smell you later." I put the visor of my helmet down and drive off with a smile on my lips. I drop the pieces of their bikes onto the ground as I drive out of the parking lot. I feel a coolness overtake my eyes, but it's soon gone.
My smile drops when I see Kira on Scott's motorbike. I was fine with the idea of Scott taking Kira to his house, but seeing it in person is a different thing. I'm not usually the jealous type, but I can't stop the pang in my chest from seeing them together. Her arms around his waist. My hands tighten around the handles. I rev my bike and speed up ahead of them.
I check my rear-view mirror, but instead of seeing Scott and Kira, I see a familiar car. "You've got to be kidding me," I mutter to myself. I turn around and see that I was right. I slow down my bike and let Scott overtake me. I check again and see the car starting to slow down too.
I pick up the pace and sure enough, the car does too. "What are playing at?" I mutter. I turn a random corner and the car does as well. I turn right into the alleyway and stop my bike behind the dumpster. I take my helmet off just as the man gets out of the car parked in the alleyway.
"You know, for a werewolf, you're not very stealthy," I say getting off my bike and walking towards the parked Cruiser.
"And for a werewolf, you're not very vigilant," Derek says walking towards me.
"I saw you didn't I." I defend.
"Only now."
I glare at him, "Wait, how long have you been following me?"
"Long enough." He crosses his arms over his chest.
"Why?" I take a step closer. "I don't need a protector."
"Against demonic ninjas? I think you do."
"They're not even after me. They're after Kira." I defend.
"Are you sure about that?"
"Pretty sure..." I trail off. We don't know for sure if they are after Kira. We just kinda assumed they were.
"How do we know they're not after you?"
"I'm just a beta, why would-"
"Maybe they're after the demon that's supposedly possessing you." He says raising his eyebrows. "Maybe they know."
"Deaton could've been wrong. Maybe it's not a demon possessing me?"
"We can't argue that there's nothing wrong with you." He counters causing me to roll my eyes.
"Gee thanks, Derek."
"You know what I mean."
"Yeah... thanks for looking out for me." I wrap my arms around him and give him a hug.
"That's what big brothers are for." He returns the hug. "And besides..." he starts, I can hear the smirk in his voice. "I have to look out for the Alpha's girl."
I freeze and slowly pull back from him. "So you heard that, right?" I awkwardly look down at the floor. I hadn't mentioned to Derek that I was with Scott. And that was not the way I wanted him to find out.
"Yeah, I heard that." He nods regretfully.
"So you aren't mad that Scott and I are together?" I ask slowly meeting his eyes.
"I'm not thrilled that he's with my baby sister." I roll my eyes. "But he's a good kid." His gaze hardens. "But if he ever hurts you, he's a dead man."
"Scott wouldn't hurt me. He's not like that."
"He better not be." His eyes furrow for a second. "He hasn't... you guys haven't-"
"No!" My eyes widen. I open my mouth like a goldfish as I stare into his eyes. "Um... no." Relief floods his face.
Actually, I could have some fun with this...
"Cause if he so much as-"
"Well, that depends..." His eyes snap to mine. "What were you referring to?" He stares at me emotionless for a few moments. "Cause maybe-"
A glare takes over his features. "I'm gonna rip his throat out." His voice comes out hard as he hastily turns around.
"I'm kidding, Derek." A laugh escapes my lips as I grab ahold of his arm. "We've just kissed, that's all." He lets out a huff of air before redirecting his glare to me.
"I still don't like it." He grumbles as my phone beeps in my pocket. I roll my eyes before checking the message.
We lost you back there. Where are you? We're at my house.
I send a reply back before turning to Derek. "As much as I love talking about my relationship with you, I have to go to Scott's-" Derek raises an eyebrow. "-to protect Kira from the ninjas." I finish, glaring at him. I turn around and get back onto my bike. "Are you coming with or are you just going to continue creeping around like a stalker?"
"Bye Nina." Derek simply says as he gets into his car and drives off.
"Stalker it is." I mutter.
I arrive at Scott's house a few minutes later. I open the front door but don't see anyone there. Odd... I thought they were here. I go upstairs and hear talking from Scott's room. I slowly turn the corner and walk into this room. Kira is sitting on the bed with a box in her lap as Scott stands near the window. He looks at her with wide eyes.
"Just kidding," Kira says as Scott lets out a laugh. I feel my eyes cool and my nails start growing. Kira's eyes suddenly meet mine before she lets out a gasp. I hastily turn around the corner as I try to regain my breathing.
What's up with me?
"Nina?" Scott walks up behind me, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Are you okay?" He looks me in my eyes with his soft ones.
"Yeah..." I blink my eyes a few times as the coolness fades. "I'm okay." I walk around him and enter the room. "Sorry about that, Demon possession." I joke setting my bag down on the floor.
"Where were you?" Scott asks as I take a seat next to Kira.
"I... got caught up somewhere," I say deciding to keep Derek's stalking a secret. "So what are you guys up to?"
"I think I know what I am." Kira motions towards the book. "A Kitsune." She shows me the picture of a white fox with 9 tails. "When a Kitsune rubs its tails together it can create fire or lightning. It's called foxfire."
I nod my head, "That makes sense. The aura around you looks like a fox."
"The sun's setting," Scott says as he walks to the window.
"I'm supposed to be back before dinner." Kira closes the book.
"Tell them you can't make it," Scott says.
"What should I say?" She asks looking at me and Scott.
"You can tell them we're having a sleepover at my place," I suggest. "Your parents know me."
"But you live with Allison and her dad."
"A sleepover with me and Allison." I counter. Just then I hear a car approaching the house. "Who's that?"
"My mom." Scott answers. He gets up and we follow after him downstairs. But instead of seeing her, I'm met with Agent McCall. "What are you doing here?" Scott asks in confusion. "And why do you still have a key?"
"Funny you mention keys. Because while I have a key to this house, I'm not exactly sure how you got a key to my office." He turns around the laptop on the table so we can see the screen. It's a picture of Scott and Kira when they broke into the office. Scott doesn't say anything. "Let me help you out here. This kind of thing usually begins with something along the lines of, 'it's not what you think' or 'I can explain'." Scott glances out the window. I follow his gaze and see that the sun has almost set.
We're running out of time
"Dad, let me help you out. You need to leave."
"I will. With a satisfactory explanation."He says stubbornly. I roll my eyes in annoyance.
"Listen to me, you need to leave, right now," I say sternly, stepping forward.
"Nina Hale, of course, I'd find you at the center of all this."
"Me?" I breathe. "I wasn't even in the photo."
"But you've been around my son, no doubt you've been a bad influence."
"Why? Cause I am a Hale?" I glare at him. Scott grabs my wrist stopping me from making any sudden movements.
"Dad if you wanna give us the third degree, then get a warrant."
"I don't need a warrant. I'm your father."
"Could've fooled me." I scoff crossing my arms over my chest.
"No, you're a gene donor. I got my hair color from you. And that's all I got." Mrs. McCall suddenly appears with confusion on her face. "So you're not allowed to play tough dad with me."
"Hey, what's going on?" She asks stepping into the room.
"Maybe one of you should explain." Agent McCall speaks up. I roll my eyes looking away from him and out the dark window.
That's not a good sign.
"Guys," Kira says nudging my arm. Suddenly an eerie feeling enters the room. I unfold my arms and look around. I take a step in front of Kira as my eyes fall on one of the figures standing in the living room.
"Who the hell is this?" Agent McCall begins walking towards it.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," I say looking over at him.
"Dad, no!" Scott warns him. But it's too late. A figure comes out from behind him and stabs him in the shoulder. Kira screams as he falls to the ground. "Dad!"
And so it begins...
