Chapter 14
"Derek you son of a-" I smile as I lift up the note again.
I thought you needed a better way of getting around
I put the note down as I gaze at the beautiful black motorbike in front of me. I take a step closer and run my hand over the cool steel. I laugh as I regrettably turn away.
I think I forgot to mention to Derek that I don't have my license yet.
My phone beeps in my pocket.
"Hello, Allison."
"Nina, um... my dad said you're staying here for a while. I just- I wasn't sure if you needed a lift here or anything?" I smile as I look at the pristine black motorbike.
"That will be great, thanks."
Within a few minutes, Allison arrives at the loft and picks me up. It's quiet in the car for a while as the radio plays random background music.
"Are you okay with staying over?" She asks hesitantly.
"Yeah...um at first I didn't know what to think, but it's okay."
"I just don't want there to be any hard feelings between us. My family's mistakes shouldn't stop us from being allies."
"I agree." I turn my gaze out the window. Even though a part of me still resents Allison and her father for being hunters, I know they are good people. I know they are different from the others we have encountered, but you can't erase the fact of what they are.
After sitting in a somewhat comfortable, somewhat tense silence we arrive. We go up to her floor and enter the apartment. Argent walks out of his office and grabs my bags out of my hand.
"Nina, welcome. Your room is this way." I follow after him and enter. The room is bigger than my one in the loft. It has a double bed in the middle with a closet on the side. The duvet is light blue and grey. Other than that it's a beautiful, simple room. "The room itself is a mirror of Allison's, but the furniture and colors are different." He points to the door on the left of mine.
"It's beautiful, thank you." I open the curtains by the bed and look outside before turning back around to him. "I know it must've been an inconvenience to have me here on such short notice."
"Not at all." He crosses his arms over his chest. "Derek and I have a difficult relationship but he explained why and I wanted to help."
"What did he say to you exactly?"
"He said you shifted during the lunar eclipse and he didn't recognize you." Argent gives me one last glance before leaving the room and closing the door. I furrow my brows.
He didn't recognize me?
The cold air blows against my skin, causing my eyes to snap open. I furrow my brows as I stare at my surroundings. Trees blow gently in the wind and the ground is layered in dirt and leaves.
what in the world...
I slowly begin to stand up and look around. The moon provides little to no light to the area. I squint my eyes as I take a few steps forward towards a random tree. I place my hand against the rough bark.
I'm not dreaming...
In all my years, I have never sleep-walked... why now?
My eyes catch sight of a huge tree stump. The Nemeton. I cautiously walk towards it. The leaves crunch beneath my feet with every step I take until I reach it. I slowly put my hand out towards it.
"Don't touch it!"
I recoil my hand and look around... no one there. Who said that? I stare at the stump again before deciding to bring my hand to it again.
"Don't!"
This time I don't listen and I follow the temptation growing in me and put my hand against the cold wood.
Silence.
The wind stops blowing and all that's left is deafening silence. Suddenly the sound of leaves crunching behind me hits my ears. My breathing picks up as I whip my head around. A man with a bandaged face stands by one of the trees. He has no eyes, well if he does they're covered by a bandage. His mouth has sharp jagged teeth with black blood staining the area. He tilts his head to the side slowly before suddenly hobbling forward. I gasp and fall backward onto the stump as he keeps approaching faster and faster.
He stops right in front of me and peers down at my shaken figure. He slowly bends down until his face is right in front of mine. His breath reeks as he stares at me with no eyes. He suddenly begins laughing. The sound alone sends a shiver up my spine.
"Okami" It whispers in a chilling, slurring voice.
I scream.
Arms hold onto me and trap me in place. I struggle against them, trying desperately to escape their grip.
"Nina!" A voice yells. I snap my eyes open. Allison's panicked ones appear before mine as she tries to hold my arms down.
"Allison?" I stop struggling. My eyes dart around the room to see Argent standing at the foot of my bed holding my legs down. He slowly releases his grip but keeps his eyes trained on me.
"Are you okay?" She breathes out with wide eyes.
"Wha-what happened?"
"You just started screaming. I came in here and saw you fully shifted." I glance down at my hands to see the bedsheets in shreds.
"I'm sorry... I don't know what..." I trail off as I cover my face with my hands. Allison places a hand on the shoulder as she sits down next to me.
What's wrong with me?
"Well, well. Look whose's no longer the crazy one." Lydia gloats while we all walk into the school.
"We're not crazy." Allison defends. Lydia stops walking and turns around to face her.
"Hallucinating, sleep paralysis... yeah you guys are fine." Lydia drawls. I exchange a look with Allison before looking down at my feet.
"We did die and come back to life. It's got to have some side effects right?" Scott says. The sharp ringing of the bell interrupts him.
"We keep an eye on each other, okay?" Stiles says looking at Scott and Allison. "And Lydia stop enjoying this so much." He says as he walks past her.
"What?" She says innocently with a smirk threatening to overtake her lips. I walk quickly over to my locker and begin getting my books. I suddenly feel a pair of eyes on my back. My head whips around to see Scott's eye widen before quickly turning back to Stiles. I light smile overtakes my lips as I go back to my locker before slamming it shut.
"I'm the hot girl?" I turn my head slowly in Scott's direction.
"You are the hottest girl." Stiles gives him two thumbs up before walking away. I shake my head before continuing to walk to class.
I don't even wanna know at this point...
"Nina!" Scott calls after me. My heart begins beating faster as he walks next to me.
"Hi, Scott."
We haven't really spoken since the kiss and I don't really know if it meant anything to him at all...
"Um...I just wanted to know if you're doing anything after school?" He asks slowly as he scratches his neck.
"I was planning to study for my motorbike license."
"You got a motorbike?" His eyes widen.
"Derek got me one, probably as a 'sorry for leaving you' gift."
"I can help you- if you want?"
"Yeah, if you don't mind-"
'No, no not at all." His eyes glance at the floor. "So... my place after school then?"
"Y-yeah sure." I smile at him before walking into the classroom and taking the seat behind his. My stomach begins twisting.
Does this mean anything? Before I would've been fine going over to Scott's house but now... It just feels different.
"Good morning everyone." I shake my head and look up at the teacher. "My name is Mr. Yukimura and I'll be taking over from your previous history teacher. My family and I moved here 3 weeks ago. I'm sure by now you all know my daughter, Kira. Or you might not, since she's never actually mentioned anyone from school. Or brought over a friend for that matter." A bang sounds from the back of the class. I furrow my brows and turn around to see a girl with black hair lying with her head on the table. "Either way, there she is." Kira slowly lifts her head up from the desk. Embarrassment written all over her face. She looks my way and I give her a sympathetic smile.
that must be rough...
After a long and tiring lesson of trying to keep my eyes open, the bell rings. I stand up and pack up my things. As I make my way out of the classroom, I spot Kira still packing her bags.
Maybe I should say hi? It must be scary being the new girl for three weeks and still not having any new friends.
"Kira." I stop her as she passes me through the door. She turns around with wide eyes. "Hi... I'm Nina. I sit near you in class."
"Hi, I'm Kira- you already knew that. Sorry." She rambles.
"I just wanted to introduce myself to you, you know, after that."
"Yeah... he's always like that."
"Let's just hope he doesn't bring out your childhood stories next." I joke.
"Oh god. I hope not." I let out a light laugh until I spot Scott and Stiles and the end of the hallway. Suddenly Stiles slams his locker shut and shoves Scott's head down before scurrying into another room.
"It was nice to meet you, Kira. I'll see you around." I smile at her before rushing off after them. I enter the room to see Scott with his red eyes glowing. "Scott?" His eyes turn to me as his fangs come out.
"Get back!" I freeze. "I don't know what's going to happen. Get back." I take a step in front of Stiles as Scott begins to shift. I begin slowly walking towards him. "Stop... I don't-" He breathes out.
"It's okay, Scott." I put my hands out in front of me as I keep walking. "Just look at me, okay?" His glowing eyes look up into mine as he digs his claws into his palms. He falls to his knees as blood starts dripping down his arms. He keeps his pained eyes on me until they turn back to their regular brown color.
"Pain makes you human." He breathes out as I drop next to him. I put a hand on his arm as he tries to regain his breath. Stiles kneels next to me and looks at him with wide eyes.
"Scott, this isn't just in our heads. This is real. And it's starting to get bad for me too." I look into his eyes. "I'm not just having nightmares. I'm having dreams where I have to literally scream myself awake. And sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm actually ever waking up."
"What do you mean?" Scott breathes.
"Do you know how you can tell if you're dreaming? You can't read in dreams. More and more, the past few days, I've been having trouble reading. It's like I can't see the words. I can't put the letters in order."
"What about now?" He stands up and looks around the room.
"I can't read a thing."
"To increase or decrease speed." I lie back down onto the bed as I try to remember all the information we've been going over for the last hour.
"Correct." Scott nods as he skims the book. "What about the clutch?"
"Um... to disengage the engine."
"Last question." He turns a page and glances over the questions. "What should you do when entering a turn?"
"Slow down?" I say slowly.
"Why?" He peaks his head up from over the book.
"Because...." I rake my brain. I click my fingers. "if you go too fast, you may veer off lane."
"Honestly, I think you're good to go." He closes the book and tosses it on the floor next to his chair.
"Seriously?" I sit up from the bed and face him.
"Did you go over this before?" He stands up and takes a seat next to me.
"I went over it a few times back in South America. But I never actually did the test."
"When is your test?"
"In a few days." I count on my fingers.
"Are you nervous?"
"No, not really." I look over into his eyes. "I've had the best teacher." He lets out a light laugh revealing his dimple.
"You have dimples." I put on my hand on his cheek and bring his face closer to mine. "I never noticed." He smiles slightly as his eyes soften. "Sorry." I mutter, letting go of his cheek quickly and looking down at my hands.
why did I do that?
He puts a hand under my chin and turns my head to look at him.
"Don't be sorry." He whispers as he stares into my eyes before glancing down at my lips. He leans forward slightly as my eyes flutter shut.
"Scott!" I jump away from him as Isaac's voice sounds from downstairs. He rolls his eyes before getting up.
"Coming Isaac!" He shouts back as he makes his way to the door. He pauses halfway before turning around and pecking my check. He gives me one last smile before leaving the room. "Yes, Isaac?" I let out a light laugh as I fall back onto his bed.
maybe it did mean something to him? Maybe he does actually like me?
My phone beeps in my pocket bringing me out of my head. I take my phone out and roll my eyes. I dial her number and after a few rings she picks up.
"What do you want?"
"Hello to you too, Cora." I laugh.
"Sorry, I've been getting a random caller all day. I didn't check the ID."
"You just sent me a message." I deadpan.
"I didn't think you would call so soon. Don't you have class or something?
"Different time zones, Cora. What are you doing by the way?" I ask as stuff moves in the background.
"I'm unpacking. Derek and Peter just dropped me off."
"How is it?"
"Lonely. But on the bright side, the lady in the next apartment. Remember her?"
"Yeah." I laugh. "She always insisted on bringing us cookies."
"That's her. She has not left me alone since I got back and she keeps asking where you are. I think she liked you more."
"What did you tell her?"
"That you went away to boarding school. I don't think she bought it but-" There's a knocking on the door. "That's probably her. I'll talk to you later, okay?" She hangs up the phone as I let out a breath.
At least I know she's okay and that someone is looking out for her.
I relax on the bed again but jump up as I hear a bang from downstairs.
"Oh, you guys, come one." Ms. McCall's voice sounds. "This house does not have the supernatural ability to heal. So... stop it." I roll my eyes as I settle back down on the bed.
