Chapter 12
"Cora!" I wrap my arms tightly around her frame as I let out a breath.
She's okay... she's alive...
"Nina...I'm not completely healed yet." She manages to get out with a gasp. I immediately let her go with wide eyes.
"Sorry." I smile sheepishly. "I'm just so happy to see that you're okay."
"You can't get rid of me that easily." She quirks a lip up. A smile overtakes my lips before my eyes moved around the loft. My smile drops.
"Derek?" My eyes widen at his seated figure against the wall. "Derek!" I run toward him and bend down to his height. "Are you okay?" He slowly opens his eyes and gives me a tiny smile.
"It worked."
"I'm proud of you, Derek." I smile as Cora brings over a water bottle and gently pours some into his mouth. "You saved her life."
"Hopefully not all for nothing." Peter speaks up as he gazes out the window. "The moon is rising, Derek. You drained your battery all the way to the red, And there is a fully charged alpha on her way to rip you limb from limb."
"I'll be fine in a few hours." Derek breathes out.
"I sincerely hope so, because a few hours is all that you have." Peter turns to look at Derek.
"Can't you remain positive for like five seconds." I roll my eyes.
"This is me being positive." He gives me a dry look.
"I'd hate to see you when you're negative." I mumble.
"What happened with Scott?" Derek brings my attention back to him.
"They had to be surrogate sacrifices for their parents." Their heads snap to mine.
"They sacrificed themselves?" He furrows his brows.
"Deaton can bring them back... I hope." I say feeling a knot forming in my stomach.
"What's happening now?" Cora questions.
"Now we wait."
I run as fast as I can glancing down at the message on my phone every now and then. I swing open the door as my eyes dart around the room. A smile overtakes my lips.
"You're okay?" Before I even know what I'm doing I rush over to him and throw my arms around his body. His wet shirt sticks to my own but I don't care.
Scott's alive.
"I'm okay." He breathes out before putting his arms around me. I let out a breath as I relax into him before slowly stepping back.
"We're okay too, just by the way." Stiles' voice pipes up from the side. "Maybe you wanna give us a hug too?"
"No, you're all wet." The corner of my lip quirks up.
"But-" He points to Scott with his spastic movements.
"I'm glad you're all okay." I smile at them as relief floods my body.
For a while there I thought Isaac, Lydia, and I were all about to become murderers.
"I better go back." Scott suddenly says. I whip my head around to him with wide eyes.
"No dude, you're not going back with them." Stiles shakes his head firmly.
"I have to. I made a deal with Deucalion."
"Does anyone else think that sounds a lot like a deal with the devil?" Stiles says, looking at us.
"Why does it matter, anyway?" Isaac speaks up from his spot on the counter.
"Because I don't think I can stop Jennifer without their help."
"But you have all of us now. We're a pack. We can defeat her together." I bring up looking at Scott, but he just shakes his head slightly.
"We're not strong enough. You know how strong she is, we need help."
"He trusts you more than anyone, tell him he's wrong." Allison looks over to Deaton with pleading eyes.
"I'm not so sure he is. Circumstances like this sometimes require that you align yourself with people you'd normally consider enemies."
"We're going trust him? The guy that calls himself death, destroyer of worlds? We're gonna trust that guy? " Isaac adds in disbelief.
"I wouldn't trust him, no, But you could use him to your advantage. Deucalion may be the enemy, but he could also be the bait."
"The enemy of your enemy is your friend." I mutter looking over at Deaton.
"Exactly." The main door suddenly creaks open. I exchange a look with everyone before going to check it out. Standing in the waiting room, staring over at us, is none other than Ethan.
"I'm looking for Lydia." He says simply. She moves forward and stands in front looking up at him expectantly.
"What do you want?"
"I need your help."
"With what?"
"Stopping my brother and Kali," His eyes glance to me. "from killing Derek." My heart drops.
"They're both going after him?" My eyes widen and dart around the room.
Derek won't stand a chance
"I'm coming with." I look up determinedly.
No one is going to hurt my brother.
I don't care if Aiden and Kali are Alphas and I'm just a Beta. I don't even care if I die for him. But one thing is for sure:
I'm not letting Derek die.
"We know about the lunar eclipse, So don't think Kali's gonna sit around waiting for it to level the playing field. She's coming, and my brother's coming with her." Ethan looks over to Derek.
"Good enough for me, Derek?" Peter says turning to face him.
"You want me to run?" He crosses his arms over his chest.
"No. I want you to stay and get slaughtered by an Alpha with a psychotic foot fetish. Of course, I want you to run. Sprint, gallop, leap your way the hell out of this town."
"If you want to fight and die for something, that's fine with me." Cora says sternly. "But do it for something meaningful."
"How do you know that I'm going to lose?"
"How do you know that you're going to win?" I counter, taking a step towards him. "You're a Beta now, remember?"
"I'll bet she has an idea." Peter looks towards Lydia and begins advancing. "Don't you, Lydia?"
"I don't know anything." She defends.
"But you feel something, don't you?" He tilts his head at her in question.
"What do you feel?" Derek asks with apprehension. Her eyes move down to the floor as her brows furrow. She spaces out for a movement before looking up with wide eyes.
"I feel like..." Her voice shakes. "I'm standing in a graveyard." My heart drops as I turn my gaze to Cora.
"Are you waiting for a personal invitation?" Peter speaks up. "Go!" Derek looks around the loft before meeting our eyes. Cora nods her head slightly causing Derek to let out a huff of air before hesitantly walking forward. "You two go with." Peter turns to us. "You never know who she's going to target." Cora shares a look with me before following Derek. I follow after them grudgingly as thoughts fly through my head.
I don't really want to leave everyone. We just found out where the parents are, Scott and the Alpha pack are about to face off to the Darach. I can't just leave them now.
Peter opens the backseat of the car and motions for me to get in, but I stop halfway.
"Nina, come one. We don't have all night." Peter sighs.
"Do I have to go?"
"Not unless you wanna be mauled to death by a psychotic Alpha."
"What about everyone else?"
"This is not about everyone else. This is about you and saving yours and your brother's life." He points inside the car. "Now go, and save your brother."
Do I really want to run? Run and hide like when I was a kid. Like when the hunters found us...
Peter pushes me in and closes the door.
"Peter!" I yell as I go to open the door by it clicks shut. I look over to Derek with wide eyes. "What are you doing?" Derek turns around with a stern look on his face.
"Kali will kill you. She won't even hesitate."
"What about Lydia? What about Scott, Stiles, Allison? Are we just leaving them too?" Derek turns his gaze away from me and looks back to the front. "I understand you have to go but what about me? If I can stay here and help someone why shouldn't I?"
"Come on!" Peter taps on the window.
"Derek please, I need to save my friends. I can't...I can't let them down." He doesn't respond. I let out a huff of air before raising my fist up to the window.
"Don't you dare." He turns around to face me with a glare. I keep my fist raised.
"Then let me out." Peter knocks on the window again.
"You do realize that a psychotic werewolf is coming to tear you guys apart right?"
"We're going now." Derek starts the car up.
"Derek!" I lean forward in my seat. "I won't go up to the loft okay? I'll just go help the others. I just don't want anyone else to die."
"Nina, let's just go." Cora tries to reason. Derek glances at me in the rearview mirror before facing the front again. I sag against the seat in defeat and look out the window. The lock clicks. My wide eyes turn to Derek.
"Don't die." He says simply.
"I don't intend to." I get out of the car and stand next to Peter who rolls his eyes.
"Your funeral." He mutters before leaning over to Derek. "Don't call until you're at least 100 miles away."
"I'll let you know when it's safe to return." I add.
"Stay safe, okay?" Cora leans forward. I smile at her before Peter pushes past me.
"Go!" He yells. They give me one last look before driving off. I let out a breath as his car vanishes around the corner. Peter turns over to look at me with a dry look. "That was such a stupid move. Admirable, but stupid." He gives me one last look before walking off to his own car.
"Hey, aren't you going to offer me a lift?" I cross my arms over my chest.
"Why? We're not going to the same place." He starts his car and drives off.
"Wow." I mutter with my mouth agape. "He seriously has no redeeming qualities." I pull out my phone and dial Scott's number.
nothing...
I furrow my brows and stare down at the phone.
Did something happen?
I scroll through my contacts and dial Stiles' number instead. It rings before his voice sounds.
"Hello?"
"Stiles, what's going on?"
"Oh, Nina it's you, Scott-"
"Wait a minute... did you not save my number?" My brows furrow.
"Well, we've been really busy and..."
"Stiles! I've known you for how many weeks now?" I take a deep breath. "Anyway, you were saying."
"Yeah, well Scott and Isaac went with Allison to get a scent to track our parents. They've probably been held up somewhere."
"And you?"
"I'm meeting them there." I hear thunder crackle in the distance.
"Where is there exactly?"
"The forest, I'll send you the details."
"Okay, and Stiles, while you're there and you know waiting... save my number." I hang up the phone and let out a huff of air. "The nerve of that ki-" A loud ear-piercing scream suddenly hits my ears. I cover them quickly and cower into the ground until it disappears. I look up and freeze.
Lydia...
My eyes widen as I run back to the loft.
Sorry, Derek...
I swing open the door and freeze. Kali lies in a pool of her own blood with multiple glass shards sticking out from her body. The Voltron Wolf lies further down with blood dripping from their mouth. But the most terrifying thing is the smirk Jennifer sends me as she stands next to Lydia.
"Get away from her!" I yell taking a step forward.
"I'm not going to hurt her." She raises her hands and steps away from a shaking Lydia.
"Why don't I believe that?" I question as my eyes glance around the room.
"They were going to kill me. What else was I supposed to do?" She smirks. "You can't deny that they deserved it. Especially after what they did to you."
"No one deserves to die." I take a confident step towards her.
"Says the Werewolf with blue eyes." She scoffs.
"I'm not proud of what I did." My eyes glance up to the metal pipe above me before quickly looking back at her. "But one good thing did come of it." She quirks her head. "Killing you won't do anything to my eyes." I jump up and grab the metal pipe, swinging my legs forward and kicking her in the face. I land on my feet and smirk at her bleeding nose.
"You shouldn't have done that." She says calmly as she wipes the blood off her face.
"What are you going to do? Kill me as well?" I flick my claws out.
"Nina, stop!" Lydia exclaims from the side.
"Listen to the Banshee, she knows what she's talking about." She smirks. "I just took down three Alphas all on my own. What makes you think that taking down one tiny Beta will be a problem?"
"I'm Derek's sister, remember." I look up into her eyes. "You want Derek on your side, right?" A smirk forms on my lips. "You kill me, he'll never join you." Her smirk falters for a second before she scoffs.
"I'll take my chances." With one swing of her arm, she sends me flying backward.
"Nina!" I hear Lydia shout. I land on the ground and feel something hard against my back. I glance around me to see a pile of glass shards. I sit up slightly as something warm drips down from my forehead. My vision begins to blur as black spots start dancing around. I faintly see the outline of Jennifer as she approaches me.
"Don't worry, I'll take good care of your brother." She smirks before slamming her foot into my face.
"Nina! Nina!" Someone shouts. They lift my head and prop it up. "Nina, open your eyes." I slowly begin to open them as Cora's glassy ones appear before mine.
"Thank goodness you're okay." She breathes, putting a strand of hair behind my ear.
"You can't get rid of me that easily." I attempt a smirk but I'm sure it came out as a grimace.
"You said you wouldn't come back here." Derek says sternly, walking over to me.
"I wasn't going to." I manage to get to my feet with Cora's help. "But then I heard Lydia scream and I couldn't just leave."
"But look what happened. She just killed three Alphas and she was going to kill you."
"I wasn't, Derek." Jennifer says as he looks over at her.
"Like hell, you weren't." I stumble towards her with a scoff.
"If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't be breathing."
"That's enough." Derek glares at her. "You know, you're not doing a very good job at trying to convince me to join you."
"Don't you see, I did this for you."
"You did this for me?"
"For us. For anyone whose ever been their victim."
"Stop talking to me like a politician. Stop trying to convince me of your cause!" Derek yells, taking a step towards her.
"Fine, I'll convince you of someone else's. Scott. You can save his mother, Stiles' father." I glare at her.
"That's rich coming from the one who took them in the first place." I cross my arms over my chest.
"You can save them."
"How?" Derek asks.
"I need a guardian." She says walking towards him. "And that's a role that can either be filled by the three parents I was forced to take or by you."
"I can't help you. I'm not even an Alpha anymore."
"All I need is for you to help me get Deucalion in the right place at the right time."
"You just killed three of them on your own. What do you need me for?"
"You haven't seen him at his strongest. I have." She says a hint of fear in her voice. "And if he's got Scott with him, I don't stand a chance unless I have you."
"Derek don't trust her." Cora growls.
"She tried to kill me, Derek. She's killed so many innocent people. How can you even begin to trust her?" I glare at the back of her head.
"I have the eclipse in my favor, But the moon's only gonna be in the earth's umbral shadow for 15 minutes. That's the extent of my window. There's no decision to struggle with. Help me kill him, and the others live. Just help me." She pleads with him. Derek looks at her for a while.
I can't believe he's actually considering it.
"Derek don't." I growl. He looks over at us for a moment. Everything is silent until he turns his gaze back to her.
"They're right. I can't trust you." He crosses his arms over his chest. Jennifer lets out a breath of air before meeting Derek's eyes.
"I'm sorry it has to come to this." She says slowly. I furrow my brows and glance over to Derek. Suddenly I'm gripped by the neck. I gasp for breath as she squeezes my throat.
"Jennifer!" Derek yells. "What are you doing?" I try to fight her but I'm still hurt. I don't think I would've stood a chance even if I was healed.
"I don't want to have to do this, but I have no choice. Help me and you save them...and your sister." Derek looks over at my eyes with his own panicked one. "So what's it going to be Derek?" She turns to face him. I grip onto her hands as she squeezes my throat tighter. My vision starts swimming.
"Fine." Derek growls. "I'll help, just let her go." Jennifer drops me to the ground. I take a deep breath and put my hand to my throat as I begin coughing.
"You maniac." I gasp out.
"Sorry Derek, you left me no choice." Derek looks over at me with soft eyes.
"Are you okay?" I nod slowly.
"Let's go." Jennifer walks towards him.
"Where are they?" He asks slowly.
"The Distillery. Scott sent me a video."
"I'm coming too." They both turn to look at me.
"No offense, but you won't be much help." Jennifer says.
"I'm going." I growl. "And after what you did to me, you should be glad you're not dead yet."
"That's so cute, you actually think your threats mean anything to me." She turns her gaze back to Derek. "Come one, let's go."
"I'm coming with you."
"Nina, no." He says grabbing my shoulders. "Stay here with Cora, where you are safe."
"I'm not a little girl, Derek. I can take care of myself." He looks at me in the eyes.
"Stay here." He follows Jennifer but gives me one last look as he does so. I let out a huff of air and turn around to face Lydia and Cora.
"You aren't going to stay here are you?"
"Nope." I say turning around. "Stay safe Cora and you too Lydia."
"Nina." I turn around to face her. "Be careful."
"Don't worry, Cora. I'm always careful."
My eyes widen as I look around the Distillery. Deucalion is lying on the floor with a pool of blood around his head. Scott is unconscious and Jennifer has Derek against the wall by the neck. "Derek!"
"You again!" She yells. She speeds towards me and grabs me by my neck. "I've waited so long to do this." She slams me into the wall and squeezes my throat tighter. My wide eyes dart over to Derek as he lay on the floor.
She's killed so many people. 12 innocent people are dead. No, 15 people are dead because of her and she feels nothing. No sympathy. No remorse...
She is pure evil...
and evil can only be punished by evil...
She slams me into the wall again but I don't wince. I don't struggle. I just stare into her eyes. They widen as her grip falters. I grab onto her arm before ripping it off my neck. She stumbles backward as I land on my feet. I look up and growl at her with my fangs bared.
"No, no, no, It-c-can't be. Y-you can't be." She stutters as she steps back. I furrow my brows as I look around at the other werewolves... or should I say, people.
It's the lunar eclipse...
I look down at my hands and see claws protruding from where my nails should be.
how is this possible...
I look back up at her and growl. I don't know how this is possible but I'm not going to waste it. I charge at her as she scurries back. I slash at her face and it slices the skin open. She looks back up at me with her eyes still wide.
"I-I don't understand... I thought... you-" She stumbles over her words as she keeps staring at me. I smirk at her as she squirms away from me. Terrified. I raise my fist and punch her in the face. She covers her nose as blood begins to drip. Her eyes meet mine again with a wave of newfound anger. She brings her hand towards my chest. I grab onto her arm and twist it until I hear a satisfying crack. Her mouth opens as she gasps in pain before ripping her arm out of my grip. Suddenly Derek pops up behind her and grips her neck with a clawed hand.
The eclipse is over.
"Your 15 minutes are up." Derek glances at me and his eyes widen. "Nina?" Jennifer takes her chance to push him off. I charge at her, but she throws up a barrier of mountain ash. I get flown back and land on the floor.
"Like I told you, Derek, either you or the parents. Well, I guess I'll just have to take them now. In a few minutes, they'll be dead, and I won't need a lunar eclipse, even to kill a demon wolf." I growl and lunge forward, but Derek grabs me. Scott takes a step forward and puts his hands up. "You tried this before, Scott. I don't remember you having much success."
Scott places his hands on the barrier and begins to push. The barrier glows bright blue around him. His jaw begins to clench as he keeps his eyes focused on her. His eyes glow amber. Her confident smirk drops. He begins growling as he concentrates all his might until... I gasp:
His eyes turn red
Blue light shoots out as the barrier breaks. Jennifer falls to the ground and stares at Scott with wide eyes.
"H-how did you that?"
"I'm an alpha now." He says proudly. A smile forms on my lips as I stare at him.
He did it... he did the impossible.
He broke through the Mountain Ash barrier. He rose to an Alpha all on his own...
He really is incredible.
I turn my gaze back to Jennifer. My smile begins to drop. I'm suddenly filled with this unexplainable rage. It's like a switch is turned on and it's overtaken my body and overridden any common sense in my mind. A low growl escapes my lips as I stare at her. Thoughts swim around my mind.
she tried to kill my sister... she tried to kill my brother...and she tried to kill me
Jennifer's eyes look to mine. Her heart beats faster as she tries to scurry away. It pounds in my ears as I advance.
I don't just want to hurt her...
I want to kill her
I want to rip her to shreds
An arm wraps around my waist and holds me still. I keep growling and focusing my gaze on Jennifer's panicked one.
"Nina. Don't do it." Scott tightens his arm around me. "This isn't you." He spins me around and his eyes widen. "Wha-"
I move out of his grip and turn back to the devil reincarnate. Ready to rip her heart out when he grabs my arms and spins me around to face him. I struggle in his grip as I try to move towards her again. He suddenly places a hand on my cheek.
"Look at me." He holds my face still as I look up into his eyes. "Calm down." His soft brown ones stare back into mine with so much emotion mixed into them. Nothing seems to matter at this moment except him. I feel my body relax as I keep my eyes on his own.
"I wouldn't run. You won't get far." Derek speaks up bringing me back to reality. Scott's eyes leave mine and look over my shoulder. I follow his gaze to see Jennifer further away from the Mountain Ash circle. Scott steps in front of me.
"Whatever you're doing to cause this storm, make it stop, or I'll kill you myself." He growls at her. "I don't care what it does to the color of my eyes."
"It won't change the color of mine, so allow me." Deucalion suddenly comes up behind Scott and rushes at her. Before I can say anything, he slices her throat wide open with his claws. She sits with her mouth open as she gapes at him. I blink my eyes as she transforms into the Darach. She falls to the ground with one last gasp before the storm suddenly stops.
everything's quiet...
It's over...
My head starts spinning as I fall to the ground.
"Nina?" Scott bends down and pulls me back to my feet. He leads me to the crates on the side and sits me down. "Are you okay?" Derek sits hesitantly down next to me as glances between me and Scott. Scott backs away quickly, pulls out his phone, and turns around.
"You want to tell me what that was back there?" Derek asks after a while.
"Scott just wanted to help me-"
"I'm not talking about Scott." His lip quirks up. "I'm talking about how you were fighting Jennifer during a lunar eclipse." My mouth forms an 'o' shape before I look back at him.
"You tell me, then we'll both know."
"Nina, we're supposed to be powerless during a lunar eclipse."
"You think I don't know that? I'm freaking out Derek. What I did should be impossible." He opens his mouth to say something but stops. "What?"
"Nothing." He shakes his head lightly before turning to face the front. It's silent for a while as I watch Scott talking on the phone before he glances over at us.
"Are you okay?" Stiles' voice sounds over the phone. Scott glances at me briefly before looking back to the front.
"Sort of."
